Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 82/53 At 6 am: 53F, wind calm and sky clear. No time this morning to look back through 17 years of records at this location, but I'm pretty sure that the morning low of 53F is the lowest for the date.
10/2/2009 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 84/53 Morning low was 62F. Precipitation was recorded from a very light/brief pre-dawn shower moving in from the SSE.
10/3/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/62 Morning low was 63F. Given the run of 5 straight unseasonably cool mornings with lows ranging from 53-63F, I would have to say that the dry season has "officially" begun at my location approximately 2-3 weeks earlier than the climatological average of October 15th.
10/4/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 89/63 At 7 am observation: light/shallow fog, 67F. Morning low was 66F. It has now been a month since significant 24-hr rainfall (>0.25"). Only 0.69" measured since September 4th.
10/5/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 87/67 Morning low was 69F (the mildest reading in past 8 mornings). Less than 1" of rain has fallen at my recording station in North Brevard County in the past 30 days (less than 20% of normal for Sept 4-Oct 4 period).
10/6/2009 7:00 AM 0.61 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/69 At 7am observation: cloudy, calm. Morning low was 70F, first low temp in the 70's since 74F on Sept 27th. Yesterday afternoon's brief thunderstorm dumped beneficial precip: the first 24-hr total over 1/2" since 0.76" fell on September 4th.
10/7/2009 6:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At 6:30am observation: Clear and calm. Distant (30-40 miles) lightning flashes were observed to the north and east at dusk from isolated t-storms moving east into the Atlantic Ocean. Since the cool 53F reading on the 1st, each morning since has been progressively warmer than the previous, and this morning was a balmy (for early October) 72F.
10/8/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 95/71 At 7am observation: 71F, wind SW 2 mph, shallow dense fog (visibility 400 yards). Yesterday's high temperature of 95F is the warmest that I have recorded in 17 years at this location, besting the previous high temperature for the month of 94F on October 11, 2002.
10/9/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/71 Morning low was 72F. Moderate shallow fog (visibility 300-400 yards) was observed from 7-8:30am. Of note, 5 days with high temperature in the low to mid 90's so far this month (very unusual for October) with the forecast indicating no relief from the heat wave through the weekend. There were only 6 days with 90F or higher temperatures in September (fewer than normal).
10/10/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/71

12/30/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 69/33 At 7 am observation: clear and calm. Morning low was 38F. Please note: Tuesday morning's low of 33F (w/o frost) with a NW wind of 5-10 mph during the coldest pre-dawn hours damaged ("burned") the tender vegetation (tomato plants) in my garden.
12/31/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 73/39 At 7 am observation: Sky mostly clear on the eastern horizon with overcast overhead (deep layer of statocu and cirrocu moving in from the WSW), 54F, calm wind, very humid with heavy dew on vegetation. Morning low was 54F.
1/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.26 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 78/54 At 8 am observation: cloudy with moderate rain ending, wind light/variable. 2 rumbles of thunder and one flash (approx 1 mile to the WSW) observed around 6:40am. Note: December precip total (calendar month) was 5.03" (normal 1.9"). 2009 total was 52.19" (normal 52"). Surf temp at PlayaLinda Beach, Canaveral National Seashore was measured 63F on 12/31/09.
1/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.71 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo (F): 66/34 At 7 am observation: clear, 34F, wind NW 3 mph. No frost observed on vegetation, however, a thin layer of ice was observed on vehicle camper top stored 4' off ground level, and hot peppers left on the surface of the top overnight were frozen to it.
1/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 59/31 At 7 am observation: partly cloudy (20% patchy cirrus), wind WNW 4 mph, 31F with light frost observed on grass in open areas. Season's first freeze, and first freeze since 30F observed on April 8, 2009. Thankfully the wind stirred overnight and the cloud cover that moved in before sunrise was enough to keep temperatures from plummeting into the 20's.
1/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 49/27 At 7 am observation: clear and calm, 27F with moderate frost observed on ground level vegetation, 1/4" thick sheet of ice on bird bath. Morning low of 27F is lowest since 25F on 2/6/09. High of 49F is lowest min/max for date (17-yr record, prev 51F in 2002).
1/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 54/27 At 7 am observation: clear, 31F, wind NW 8 mph. No frost observed. Very thin crust of ice observed on bird bath. Morning low was current temperature of 31F (thankfully the wind stirred enough last night to bust the forecast for lows in the upper 20's- tonight may be a different story with a hard freeze a possibility).
1/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 49/22 At 7 am obsn: clear and calm, 23F with moderate frost observed on 0-6' AGL vegetation. 3/4" thick ice sheet observed on bird bath 4' AGL in open near temperature sensor housing. Below 32F for 14+ hrs, below 28F for 10+ hrs. Low of 22F shatters previous 18-yr low for date of 31F in 1999. This morning's 22F matches last winter's minimum of 22F recorded on consecutive mornings (January 22-23) and also matches this location's 18-yr record low (for any date) of 22F recorded 1/5/01.
1/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 53/21 (NWS supplied Nimbus digital min/max memory thermometer, sensor housing 6' AGL in open area) At 7 am obsn: clear and calm, 22F with moderate frost observed on vegetation 0-6' AGL. Morning low of 21F recorded at 5:30am is an 18-yr all-time record low for any date at this location. A 3/4" thick ice sheet still on bird bath (the previous morning's ice did not melt yesterday and the hole that I punched through to measure thickness yesterday morning was re-frozen). Temperature has been below 32F since 7:10pm, below 28F since 9pm. Tender vegetation (banana trees, bird of paradise) in yard has melted down. Citrus trees (in semi-protected area) are not showing leaf damage at this time. The fruit was picked 2 days ago in anticipation of this hard freeze.
1/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 60/22 At 7 am observation: increasing cloud deck (cirrostratus) moving quickly in from the west, 35F, wind SW 3 mph. Morning low was 30F, recorded shortly after midnight. Temperature was below freezing last night for 6.5 hours, the 6th consecutive night of freezing temperatures. Sheet of ice 1/2" thick are still present in the bird bath, though it melted 1/4" since yesterday morning.
1/9/2010 7:15 AM T M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 60/34 At 7:15am obsn: cloudy, 34F, wind NW 5 mph, spattering of ice pellets/sleet observed (no accumulation in gauge or on surfaces). The trace of measureable precipitation was from light rain shower observed around 6:30 pm on 1/8. This morning's low was first morning in 7 days that the low temperature was above freezing. If the temperature drops below freezing before midnight tonight, it will be the 8th consecutive day (starting on 1/2/10) with freezing temperatures at some time during the day.
1/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 37/24 (Thermometer is a NWS-supplied Nimbus min/max with sensor housing 6'AGL in open area of yard). At 8am observation: mostly clear (5% cirrus), 25F, wind WNW 4 mph. Yesterday morning's frozen precipitation (sleet mixed with rain falling from 8 am-noon) was followed by the coldest daytime max (37F) in 18 years of records at this location (previous 39F on 1/24/03 with light snow flurries). Temperature was below freezing last night for over 13 hours (and counting), below 28F over 10 hours (and counting), and below 26F nearly 5 hours. Ice sheet on bird bath measured at 1/2" thick. No frost observed, however grass is crunchy with pockets of light ice accumulation in shaded locations from yesterday's sleet event. The following is the daily min/max temps (F) for the first 10 days of January: 1st: 66/44, 2nd: 58/34, 3rd: 49/31; 4th: 54/27, 5th: 49/31, 6th: 53/22, 7th: 60/21, 8th: 60/30, 9th: 37/27, 10th: ?/24.
1/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 47/24 At 7 am observation: clear and calm with moderate frost, 27F (morning low was 26F). Temperature was below freezing last night 12 hours, below 30F for 11 hours, and below 28F for 7.5 hours. 4" deep bird bath (in open area of yard 4' AGL and 15' from temperature sensor housing) had a 1" thick sheet of ice on it. The ice has not completely melted in this bird bath since the hard freeze January 5-6th. At 11am yesterday I observed a solid sheet of ice covering a 200x1000' wetland in a conservation area just south of my location in Scottsmoor. I photo-documented the thin ice sheet (1/8-1/16th inch). The mud near the wetland was also frozen. It has been 21 years since I have witnessed frozen water and earth in central Florida, with the Christmas freeze of 1989 being the last time.
1/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 60/21 At 7 am observation: heavy frost, 22F. Temperature was below 32 for a little over 13 hours; below 30 for over 12 hours, below 28 for a little over 10 hours; below 26 for 9.5 hours, at or below 22 degrees for 1.5 hours.
1/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 60/22 At 7 am obsn: clear and calm, 28F with moderate frost. Morning low was 27F. 1/4" thick ice sheet observed on the bird bath. The ice in the bird bath has not completely melted since the hard freeze January 5-6th. Temperature was below 32F for over 9 hours, below 30F for 7 hours. High temperature has not exceeded 60F since the pre-dawn hours on January 1st. With this morning's freeze, temperature of 32F or lower has now been observed at some time (early morning or evening) on 11 straight days starting with the morning of January 3rd. This streak is by far an 18-yr record for my station location in North Brevard County, east-central Florida.
1/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 61/28 At 7 am observation: mostly cloudy (75% cirrus/cirrostratus), 38F, wind calm, no frost or ice observed. Morning low was 36F. Yesterday was the first day since the morning of January 5th that ice completely melted in the bird bath, and last night was the first night since the night of January 5-6th that there was not any ice formation overnight in the bird bath.
1/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 69/38 At 7 am observation: clear and calm, 45F (also morning low). Yesterday's high temperature (near climo norm) was the warmest it has been this year! Overnight low of 45F still slightly below normal.

3/5/2010 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 58/30 At 6 am observation: 30F, clear and calm with moderate ground level frost. Temperature dropped 1F since 5 am, and may end up dropping into the upper 20's by sunrise. This morning's low temperature of 30F (and dropping with over an hour until sunrise) shattered the previous minimum for the date of 35F recorded in 2007 and is an 18-yr record low for the date for my reporting station located in the extreme north end of Brevard County in east central Florida. Looking back at my temperature records, quite frequently (for this late in winter) the low temperature on March 5th has been in the mid to upper 30's (7 previous occassions dating back to 1992).
3/6/2010 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 64/30 At 6 am observation: clear and dead calm, light car top frost observed. Morning low was 34F. This morning's low temperature is 2F above the 18-yr record low for the date of 32F recorded in 2007.
3/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 62/31 At 7 am observation: clear and calm, 31F with moderate frost observed on vegetation. This morning's freezing temperature is the 20th time since January 1st that the daily minimum temperature was 32F or lower. Last year 14 freezes were recorded over the same time period, with the 15th and final freeze occurring on April 8th. In the 18 years that I have recorded the min/max temperatures for my east central Florida (northern Brevard County), the average number of freeze events occurring for an entire season (Nov-April) is 5 to 6 freezes per year. The winter of '97-98 (interestingly also an El Nino winter as this winter was classified) is the only winter season over the 18-yr period of record that I observed no freezing temperatures.

6/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.14 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 91/70 At 7 am observation: clear, wind calm, 70F. A wind gust of 35 mph from the SW was observed in a thunderstorm around 5 pm yesterday. Yesterday's high of 91F was the 3rd straight day with this reading, and the morning low has been either 69 or 70F each morning so far in June. Measureable rain has been observed each day. Yes, the Florida summer monsoon is in full swing.
6/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.19 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 94/71 AM low was 74. Yesterday's high temperature of 94F matched the high for the year to date recorded on May 3rd & 4th. The overnight low of 74F is warmest of the year, besting 73F recorded on May 4th.
6/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.33 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/72 Observed measureable precipitation past 9 straight days (8 with thunder) for a grand total of only 2.19", and the heaviest daily total only 0.58" on 6/4. Some areas to the north, south and west have received 5-7" over the same time period.
6/8/2010 6:00 AM 0.45 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 91/71 At 7 am observation: clear, 71F, wind calm. Yesterday's afternoon thunderstorm was the 10th straight day with measureable rainfall. The previous string of rain days to start the summer rainy season at my location (18-yrs of records) in east central Florida was 9 in 2005.
6/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 86/67 Refreshingly cool morning after yesterday's uncharacteristically mild rain-free daytime high of 86F.
6/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 85/63 At 7 am observation: clear and calm, 64F. Morning low of 63F and daytime high of 85F are second lowest for date in 18 yrs of records (2nd to 84/58 in 2000). The morning low, while -7F below climo, is well above the lowest minimum for any day in June (56F on June 7th, 2006).

6/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 94/69 After starting the month with 8 straight days of measureable rain, yesterday marked the 9th straight day without measureable rain, which is very unusual for June. Other noteable June dry spells with consecutive days without rain: 10 in 2008, 11 in 2000 and also 1998.
6/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 93/68 At 7 am observation: Calm with shallow fog, 69F. Around 1/2 dozen very close c/g lightning strikes were observed in the thunderstorm between 5-6 pm yesterday. This may contribute to the ongoing wildfires in the area since the cell that produced the lightning did not produce much rain.

Highs each day for past 5 consecutive days dropped 1F each day (96,95,94,93,92). Would a betting man be willing to put money on a high of 91 today?

6/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 91/68 Morning low was 70F. Heavy rain 1-3" was received to the south and west of my location yesterday, but all my gauge could muster was 0.03". Some areas received more rain yesterday than I have measured all month.
6/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/70 Morning low was 74F. June rainfall to date is 3.13", which is around 75% of normal. Given that some parts of Brevard County have not received signficant rainfall in 2 weeks, I have responded to a half dozen lightning wildfires in the past week, with the largest 25 acres in the Grant-Valkaria area of south Brevard County.
6/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 91/74 Morning low was a balmy 75F. Battled a 25-acre lightning started wildfire in Rockledge yesterday afternoon. Some areas in Brevard County have not had significant rainfall since June 8th. Isn't this supposed to be the start of the rainy season?

6/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/72 Morning low was 73F. Surf temperature at the Hiles Ramp in south New Smyrna Beach was measured at 71F at noon on 6/26.
6/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 95/73 Morning low was 74F. At 7 am observation: Partly cloudy (25% multi-level cirrus, altocumulus), indicating some moistening of the mid-level of the atmosphere following a very dry week/weekend. June rainfall to date is 60% of normal, and each additional day without rain is adding to the current moderate wildfire threat.
6/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 94/73 Smoke and ash observed 4-6 pm yesterday afternoon from a large MINWR controlled burn 15 miles to the southeast.
6/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 95/72 At 7 am: partly cloudy, 72F, wind calm. Today will be the 8th straight day w/o measureable rainfall if the 30% chance pans out. This string of hot dry days follows 0.92" of rain spread out over 5 days (June 17-21), which followed a stretch of 9 straight days w/o rain starting on June 8th. This makes the last 3 weeks in June one of the driest periods during any June in 18 years of recording precipitiation at my location in east central Florida. If no rain is received today, the monthly total of just over 3" (around 50% of normal) for June 2010 will be one of the lowest totals that I have observed. The driest June by far occurred in 1998 when only 0.59" was received during the entire month, leading up to the 38,000-acre Farmton wildfire that destroyed 36 homes in the small community of Scottsmoor 1 mile to the south.
7/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 93/70 With yesterday's precipitation "goose egg", this location just recorded the second driest June in 18 years of records, with only 2.79" of rain measured from midnight to midnight June 1-30th. Driest June by far was 1998 with only 0.59". Other notably dry Junes: 4.02" in 2006, 4.29" in 1993, 4.95" in 1997, and 5" in 1997.
7/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/72 At 7 am obsn: overcast with drizzle, 74F, wind calm. Lightning observed well to the east out over the Atlantic Ocean yesterday evening around 11 pm. The 0.02" received as of the 7 am observation (after 10 straight dry days) is very disappointing considering some locations 10-20 miles inland received 3-4" yesterday afternoon/evening.
7/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 81/74 Maximum temperature was the lowest max since 80F on May 10th.
7/4/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 89/74 A paltry 0.13" has been measured since the 19th of June, and only 1.02" measured since the 7th of June. This dry spell is second only to the 0.59" measured for the same time period in 1998.
7/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 87/71 At 7 am observation: Overcast, 72F, wind calm. Heavy afternoon thunderstorms were observed several miles to the north, but significant precipitation continues to avoid my gauge. The 1/10" was the most since 1/3" received on the 19th of June and gave the brown grass a hint of green, but it barely put a crust on the dusty dry soil.
7/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 85/69 The 16-day stretch from June 20-July 5 measured only 0.23" rain. This is the driest stretch for these days in 18 years of records, undercutting 1998's total of 0.96" for the same time period. Given the forecast of 0-20% chance of rain for the remainder of the week, this mini-drought is likely to intensify. Another notable "wet season" (June, July, August, or September) dry period was July 1-26, 1999 when only 0.34" fell. The driest 2-week plus stretch (by far) during the wet season occurred June 1-20, 1998 when only 0.02" was measured.
7/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 89/70 Given the very low rain chances over the next 5 days, June 1 through mid-July 2010 may turn out to be the driest 45 days ever recorded during a wet season month. As of today, 2.98" measured June 1 - July 7 (2.79" in June and 0.19" July to date). Stay tuned.
7/8/2010 6:30 AM 0.13 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 87/62 The low of 62F this morning shatters both the record for the date (70F, numerous years) and the all-date low for the month of July (65F on July 2, 2008). Any July or August low temperature below 68F during the heart of the warm season is unusual, especially considering that this morning's temperature was compliments of excellent radiational cooling following passage of a "dry slot" mid-July FROPA that moved off the Atlantic from the NE and across east central Florida yesterday afternoon and not a hail-cooled reading. Also of note, the late morning shower yesterday produced 0.13" which is the greatest one-day total since 0.33" fell on the 19th of June. It was very welcome and helped briefly green up the grass and put a crust on the dusty soil, but much more is needed to break the month long drought that started June 8th at this location.
7/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 90/62 AM low was 67F, tying the 18-yr record low for the date set in 2006.
7/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 95/67 AM low was 70. Yesterday's high temperature of 95F tied 1998 for the second highest temperature for the date and was shy of the 18-yr record high of 97F recorded in 2007. Only 1.25" rain from June 8-July 8, making this one month stretch by far the lowest for the calendar dates. Previous low total for same time period (18-yr records) was 2.77" in 1998, followed by 3.80" in 2009. Other notable one month or longer dry stretches during the "wet" season months of June, July, August, September: The grand-daddy one-month or longer dry stretch occuring during the wet season was June 1-July 4, 1998 = 0.59"; July 1-31, 1999 = 1.65"; July 1-August 2, 2005 = 1.68", and the ongoing 2010 dry stretch June 1 - July 9 = 3.11". Notably dry (monthly rain total below 3") "wet" season months include September 1997 with 2.88"; June 2010 with 2.79"; July 1999 (mentioned above) with 1.65"; July 3005 (mentioned above) with 1.62"; and of course the driest wet season month (18 yrs records) was June 1998 (mentioned above) with 0.59".
7/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 97/70 Morning low was 71. Thunderstorm observed 9-10 pm on 7/10. High of 97F topped the previous high for date of 95F in 2003 (18-yrs records) and was highest reading since 100F on June 22, 2009. The 1/4" rain was greatest 1-day rainfall since 1/3" measured on June 19th. Wet season rainfall from June 1 - to date now stands at 3.36" (approx 35% of normal) and is the lowest June 1 to July 11 total in 18 years of records.
7/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 94/71 Morning low was a balmy 76F. Heavy rain with frequent lightning observed several miles south Sunday afternoon, though only 0.13" found its way into my gauge. A friend 4 miles south of my location reported 2.5" in 45 minutes. This year's wet season (June 1 to present) has been a bust at my location, the second driest to date wet season in 18 years of records (1998 was driest to date). Here are some rainfall total comparisons for this year versus (1998): June 1-July 11 = 3.49"(3.29"); June 8-July 11 = 1.63"(3.28"); July to date = 0.070"(2.70").
7/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/74 Looking at 18 years of records verify that June 1-present lack of a daily rain total of 0.60" or greater is the longest to start a wet season. It may also be the longest stretch of low-rain days during any part of the wet season (I will check records this evening and post results tomorrow). May 26th was the last day that 0.60" or greater was observed.

Lowest July total rain total in 18-years of records is 1.65" measured in 1999. Lowest wet season month's (June, July, August, September) total precipitation was 0.59" measured in June 1998.
7/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 91/71 AM low was a muggy 79F, an 18-yr max/min for the date (previous was 76F on multiple years). The overnight low was the warmest since 81F on June 22, 2009. Following yesterday's meager 0.06" rain accumulation, the month's total to date now stands at 0.93" (20% of normal). Only 0.95" measured since June 20, and 3.68" since June 1. Given the low rain chances for next week following today's 40% chance for a widely scattered sea breeze shower, it looks like today will be the best chance to receive enough meaningfull precipitation to avoid July 2010 breaking the 18-yr record low July rain total of 1.65" set in 1999, and also becoming the second lowest wet season (June, July, August, September) month's total (second to 0.59" in June 1998).
7/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 93/76 Yesterday's high temperature was the first high that was not either 91 or 92 since the 13th, a remarkably consistent run with only 1F variability. Rain showers observed 3 miles to the east of my location at sunrise, moving north. Based on water vapor loops, a large area of dry air extending from the northern Bahamas well out into the Atlantic Ocean is moving this way, so I expect unseasonably low rain chances through the first half of next week, increasing the chance that the total rainfall received in July will be the lowest reading in 18 years of records.
7/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 93/72 At 7 am observation: shallow fog, 72F, wind calm. While measureable precipitation has been observed on 9 days this month (near the normal of around 30% of days with rain), the total to date is only 0.93", with the average precipitation event around 1/10th of an inch. The greatest 24-hr total so far this month was 0.25" on July 10th, and the last time it rained more than 1/4" was on June 19th when 0.33" was received. It is very unusual to go more than one month during the rainy season without receiving a good soaker.
7/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 97/72 The morning low was 75. Yesterday's high temperature of 97F is an 18-yr record high for the date, besting the previous reading of 96F recorded in 1998. Smoke was observed from 4 pm until 8 pm yesterday afternoon, apparently from a large ongoing fire on Merritt Island. The local effects of going 5 weeks with highs in the 90's and less than an inch of total precipititaion are very apparent. Large, established trees are shedding canopy (elm leaves and pine needles) in an attempt to conserve moisture. Normally drought tolerant bahai grass is beginning to die out in the sandiest portions of my property.

First week in August continues the trend, with only 0.30" measured so far and a relatively dry forecast for coastal areas north of the Cape through most of the work week. Evidence of the severity of this 8-week drought are evident in the leaf and needle drop from mature trees on my property.

As has been the situation most of this summer, the line split and fell apart before it reached my north Brevard County rain gauge, and I observed a light drizzle for about 15 minutes. If this trend continues, this year's dry "wet" season will by far undercut any that I have observed in 18-yrs at my current residence. The June 1 - August 20, 2010 rain total stands at 6.06" (around 30% of normal). Looking at 18-yrs of records, no other wet season to date comes close to being as dry as this one. For the same period, 1998 had 11.51", 1999 had 15.24", and 2005 had 15.44".

8/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 89/71 Morning low of 71F is coolest since 70F on August 2nd. Precipitation has been measured on 9 straight days, and 18 of 26 days this month (70%), though average of a paltry 0.18"/day is not helping attack the summer drought at this reporting station located at the extreme north end of Brevard County. Month's total of 3.30" is on track to undercut 18-yr low of 3.5" recorded in 2000.

March 20-July 5, 1998 (107 days) is the longest stretch for this occurence (for any time of year) in 18 years at my north Brevard location. August 2010 goes down in my record book as the 2nd driest August in 18 years of recording precipitation and temperature at my location in north Brevard County, second (by only 0.04") to 3.50" measured in 2000. This follows the driest July and the 2nd driest June in 18 years. The June/July/August 2010 total of 7.33" is by far the lowest 3-month wet season total in 18 years. Previous low was 13.61" observed in 1998. Other relatively dry 3-month "wet" season totals: 15.19" in 2000, 15.42" in 1993, 15.73" in 1999. Earl's passage well offshore to the east of Florida (drawing moisture away from the peninsula), followed by warm/dry high pressure building through the holiday weekend, insures that the first week in September will continue the hot and dry trend.

A light sprinkle fell around 6am, just enough to make the morning air heavier (more humid) than usual. Last 2 days of mid-90's and low humidities with desicating SW/W wind have compounded the record summer drought here in north Brevard county. A lot of hope is riding on today's 40% chance of rain hitting my gauge.
9/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.86 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 92/73 "Even a blind squirrel sometimes gets a nut" my grandpa used to say when it would finally rain after a long dry spell. Yesterday afternoon's 5 pm thunderstorm was the first one-day rainfall event of more than 0.58" since May 25th when 1.35" fell. Most of the rain (3/4") fell in 10 minutes. Little nearby lightning or significant wind was observed, however numerous flashes and rumbles were visible on the horizon well to the SE. With a summer rainfall deficit of nearly 15", much more is needed before the start of the "dry" season in October.
9/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 89/69 At 8 am observation: Dark sky in the east with a bank of showers coming ashore PlayaLinda Beach. Very little measureable rain made it into my gauge yesterday afternoon, though numerous showers were in the area most of the afternoon. It has now been 104 days since a rain event of 1" or greater observed. This stretch is closing in on the 109 day stretch (w/o a 1" or greater) that was observed (a little over 2 months in the dry season and nearly 1 month of the wet season) March 20-July 6, 1998, and is a phenomenal occurrence considering that this year's stretch spanned the entire summer when heavy rain events are most common. The 18-year record for days with less than an inch of rain received in a day occurred during the dry season and stretched 140 days from January 15-June 3, 1996. I can't imagine that this record will be challenged given that September and early October often see heavy rain events (both tropical and early season frontal) in east central Florida.
9/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 87/71 Morning low was observation time temperature of 72F. Even though 1" of extremely beneficial rainfall was received at my recording station over the past 3 days, much more is needed to attempt (with only 3-4 weeks remaining in the "wet" season) to whittle away at summer's huge 14" rain deficit. A 7' deep ditch that runs along my property continues to be completely dry. Normally this time of year the ditch has 3-4' of flowing water in it. Some portions of central/south Brevard County received 3" during the past 3 days, as evidenced by retention ponds having standing water in them, some for the first time in months.
9/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 91/71 Very seasonal temperatures given the sea breeze dominated flow. Nearly a third of the month is over and barely 1" of rain received. I will check my records for the driest September in 18 years of observations, but I think it was 2.88" a few years back. The 2010 "wet" season will truly go down in the record books as unstopably dry if no heavy rain events are observed before the cold fronts start arriving in October.
9/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 87/71 18-year low precipitation total for September was 2.67" recorded in 2008. With 3 weeks remaining and only 1.01" measured so far this month, this record is within reach.

9/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.21 M M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 95/71 Yesterday's high temperature was an 18-year record high for the date, shattering the previous record high of 91F recorded in 2007. A thunderstorm with moderate rain was observed late evening between 9:40-10:15 pm. Much greater rainfall totals were documented by doppler estimates only 5 miles to the north and northeast of my observation location. Even though every drop of rain is appreciated, given the persistent dearth of significant precipitation events (no one-day rain events greater than 1" since May 25th) and the wet season historically ending in early to mid October, I'm convinced that June 1st to date's rain deficit of 15" will only be added to by the time fall's first cold fronts sweep through.
9/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 90/71 Morning low was 72F. With nearly 1/2 of the month gone and only 1.41" total precipitation to date, September 2010 is on track to rival 2008 (the driest September in 18-years of records) when only 2.67" was recorded during the entire month.
9/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24-hr hi/lo(F): 86/60 Morning low of 60F is an 18-year record low for the date, and is the earliest 60F reading observed in September since observations began in May 1992 at this location.

With the deep-layered dry air mass firmly in place this week, no precipitation is anticipated. As Major Hurricane Igor passes by nearly 1000 miles to the east early in the weekend, even more drying is expected. Unless a tropical system forms near the Yucatan or western tip of Cuba and comes up from the south, I believe the dry season will arrive several weeks early, adding insult to injury given the 15"+ rain deficit since June 1 at my east-central Florida location North Brevard County.

Month's precipitation totals still stands at 1.41", on track to shatter the 18-year record low September total of 2.66" observed in 2008. The Florida Division of Forestry issued a statement this week saying that the 2011 spring wildfire season could be above normal next year due to the dry conditions expected to continue as the La Nina intensifies. Given the dearth of summer rainfall, the wildfire "season" may not wait until next spring.

With one week to go in September, the only thing that will salvage the month's pitifull rain total (1.41" to date/80% below normal) will be a slow-moving tropical system coming up from the S/SW dumping 5" or more. Some models indicate that a tropical system may form in the western Caribbean Sea next week, then be drawn northward toward the Florida peninsula by a cold front. We'll see...

Some stations inland of my location received well over an inch of rain. It has now been 122 days since a 24-hr rain event of an inch or more at my location. What makes this so notable is that it is occuring during the climatologically wet season. This year's stretch eclipsed the 2nd longest run (wet or dry season) of 121 days observed January 4 - May 11, 1999. The #1 longest (18 years of records) is 206 days stretching from October 25, 2008 - May 18, 2009. If significant rain is not received in the next week or two (before the climatological dry season historically starts in mid-October), it is quite possible that this record will be eclipsed.

I would like to think that the 40-50 percent chance of meaningfull precipitation forecasted for the next several days will produce enough rainfall to prevent this September from eclipsing the previous 18-year record low of 2.67" measured in 2008, however, I am not going to place any bets given the paucity of significant (1/2" or more) rain events since the start of the summer.
