4/14/2010 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Rain gauge was put up for the first collection of the spring at 9:30 pm on Tuesday night 4-13-10 - during a light rain shower. Wednesday morning the gauge was empty. The rain that had fallen softly most of Tuesday must have ended on Tuesday evening about 10 or 11pm. the gauge is up so the next 'one' will be caught!
4/15/2010 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dry as a bone! Lovely spring day - air soft and still. Blue sky with some haze over the Bay.
4/16/2010 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not a drop BUT the first purple iris are up just below the gauge! Beautiful - one open flower and 3 buds on the stem .
4/17/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M A beautiful day yesterday (4-16-10). In the afternoon, dark clouds rolled by and a light shower - or rather - a dribble fell about 5:30 to 6 pm. today is a beautiful, crisp day, cool and lovely at 8 am.
4/22/2010 8:45 AM 0.08 M M M M Yesterday 4-21-10 the sky dripped gently throughout most of the day. Never a real rain that got one wet, rather just enough to wet the grass & driveway, etc. This morning offered heavy fog that cut off much of the sun. Now at almost 9 am, the fog is beginning to burn off. the sky remains grayand even the Bay looks gray. Quiet with no wind.
4/27/2010 9:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Wonderful cool spring days with temperatures in the high 50s and 60s. Puffy black and white and grey clouds floating by, some with the promice of storms and possibility lightening. Thsi morning at 7:30, the eastern shore of Maryland, across the Chesapeake Bay was shroaded in black grey low clouds - dark and mysterious - while the Bay and the western shore was luminous with sunlight. No heavy downpours, but on going sporatic showeres - soft.
5/17/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Light rain over night continuing this morning. Only 0.02 so far - hope there will be more. The perennial flowers (iris, tulips, dafodils, peony, and more) have passed thru their glory in a much shorter time than usual. Dryness is one issue, and a blaze of high heat is another. Rain is a remedy we need.
5/21/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Beautiful spring days - cool and lovely. Merely mist in the bottom of the gauge. Enough to pour out a few drops but not even 0.01. High clouds cover most of the sky this morning. White/lightgrey. My Nantucket weather glass (with water) shows that something is coming.
5/24/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M A full day of soft and then hard, then soft rain. Yet all that fell was only 0.03 (plus a bit more) inches. The soil is wet on top but very dry an inch down. This morning (5-24-10) has high cloud cover and it looks like it wants to rain. The Bay is grey and the wind is russeling the waves and in the trees.
6/15/2010 10:00 AM 0.07 M M M M I was gone from the country for 2 weeks, May 25th through June 6th. when I returned, there was 0.70 inches of water in the gauge. Last week, 6/9 - 6/13, there was a small amount of rain: 0.02 in the gauge. Last night (6/14/10) AT LAST we had a bit more: 0.70 in a brief burst of showers that started about 6 pm. It rained for perhaps 10 minutes, then stopped, and then resummed for a bit more. Today the oppressive humidity of the last 4 days is finally down and the temperature is no longer in the 90s. At 11 am, it is 80 with low humidity.
6/29/2010 10:30 AM 0.16 M M M M At long last, we had a strong rainfall for a few minutes yesterday afternoon at about 4 pm. It only measured 0.16 inches but we have had weeks of little or no rain. the grasses are burned out and the plants are struggling. today we finally are at about 83 degrees after 5 or 6 days of oppressive heat - in the high 90s to 100. the sky is cloudy today - gray. Yesterday was a blue sky day until dark black clouds rolled in and the thunder began. We had thunder but no lightening yesterday. there was some overnight rain but we could not hear it because we have all the air-conditoners ramped up and a crowd of 8 kids in the house.
7/11/2010 11:00 AM 0.91 M M M M 5:15 yesterday morning the rain began to fall. It fell softly at first and then built up speed and rained hard for about 35 minutes. All day and into the evening, soft steady rain ebbed and flowed. In the afternoon, enough rain had softened up the soil that from 3 pm to 5:30 pm, I was able to pull weeds and dead vines and get the whole root out! The rain had truly sunk in and softened the soil. This morning was warm, in the 80s, but not too humid. A fresh breeze comes off the Bay and I don't need A-C to be comfortable. This is the first real rain in weeks, the most I have gotten on my land in over a month. The grass has even greened up.
7/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M The heat is still oppressive - near 100 daily - and the humidity is less firece. A quiet brief rain must have fallen yesterday. I did not witness it.
8/6/2010 8:30 AM 0.68 M M M M The sunny afternoon began to be taken over by heavy clouds coming in from the NW at about 3 pm. by 4:15 It was dark like dust in the winter. The wind and lightening and thunder rolled slowly in and the rain began about 4:25. the wind was mild compared to last week when the power went off, and the thunder/lightening were rolling all around me as tho the storm was NOT moving thru. Rather it was rolling overhead above my community. I turned off the computer and lights and waited for the power to go off. Luckilly it did not.
8/13/2010 7:00 AM 1.70 M M M M Yesterday morning, black clouds rolled in about 7:45 am to make it feel like night was falling. By 8:15, a violent lightening storm began and I lost power again, second time in 2 weeks. Thunder and lightening seemed stuck around my neighborhood. Lots of close by lightening. I heard the BGE transformer blow at 8:15 am. Al lights out and no well for water again. (By 6:15 pm the light was restored). the violent storm blow out over the Bay by 9 am. and slowly the clouds disappeared and a beautiful day resumed by 9:30. Throught theday, clouds blew in several times with small amounts of rain drops, no accumulation although it looked like another hard rain might come at about 4 pm. A few drops only. This morning the surf in the Bay is as good as Malibu! The temperature is down and the humidity is up.
8/15/2010 9:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Soft rain overnight - no thunder or lightening. Sky was bright with some clouds in the morning and now - at noon on August 15 - it is raining softly again.
8/18/2010 10:30 AM 0.56 M M M M Soft rain began early this morning (ca. 7 am ??). the wind was strong off the Bay from the N and the white caps on the Bay were rolling in on an angle: beautiful. It was cool and breezer until about 10 am when the breeze became less strong and the humidity climbed. Now it is 70 degrees and the humidity feels like 95 %! Rain is continuing to fall softly.

4/18/2010 4/19/2010 7:30 AM 2 0.00 M M Two beautiful spring days! Blue skies, birds singing, comfortable temperatures - low to high 60s. Yesterday 4-18-10, the afternoon got cloudy -with high dark grey clouds and NO rain fell.
4/20/2010 4/21/2010 8:00 AM 2 0.00 M M Yesterday 4-20-10 was a lovely brisk day again. NO rain, only one bug in the gauge. Temperatures in the 60s again. The gauge today is empty except for another bug. And today rain is coming. Dribbles started about 7:50 am and the sky and the feel of the air says rain. The earth is very dry and needs rain.
4/25/2010 4/26/2010 9:00 AM 2 0.11 M M Two cool days (50 -65) with overcast and changing skies. Rain began lightly as sprinkles on Saturday 4-24-10 at noon and cycled in and out much of the day. Accumulation was 0.08. Sunday was cool again with on & off sprinkles. Accumulation was 0.03.
4/29/2010 4/30/2010 7:15 AM 2 0.00 M M three days with no rain: 4-28-10 gauge had a trace, almost 0.01. 4-29-10 had none. 4-30-10 had none. Three beautiful spring days. Bright, cool (50s -60s). Wednesday and Thursday were very windy and it felt cold. The full moon is waning. The lush green of a new spring is a joy to behold.
5/2/2010 5/11/2010 8:00 AM 10 0.09 M M A long period of drought, May 2 thru today, May11, with only small rain events on May 4: 0.08 and May 6: 0.01. Gardens have been calling for rain and finally it began today at 11 am. An on and off rain, never (so far) heavy, but at least wet. The local roads have some accumullation at low spots. The wind has been the noticable thing for the last week: very strong and gusty with some branches in South AA County blown down. Gusts up to 50 mph. Now it is still windy - tree branches are dancing and even low lying flowers are waving in the wind. Our morning low temperatures are surprising - low 40s in May for day after day. Today has not risen above 58 degrees here on the windy shore.
5/12/2010 5/14/2010 10:00 AM 3 0.04 M M Brief rain each day but not much accumulation. Yesterday the gauge read 0.04. Today was a lovely day that grew hotter and more humid as the day went on. Rain began about 4:30 pm and tonight about 7:30 pm the lightening began. Thunder and lightening are rolling as I type. The first time in 2010 that the lightening has rolled. I drove home from Annapolis at 6:00 pm and a rainbow was at my side in the eastern sky most of the way home. Lovely. Lost in the midst of dark grey clouds - a shinning presence. Tomorrow's gauge will show the amounts - not much but lots of drama!
5/14/2010 5/16/2010 12:00 AM 3 0.28 M M Friday evening -5/14/10 - thunderstorms began about 6:30 pm. As I drove the 25 miles south from Annapolis to Tracys Landing, I followed a rainbow, ... or it followed me. It was to the east imbedded in a hug wall of black storm clouds. Saturday am (10:00), the gauge had only 0.28 inches, but we had had LOTS of lightening and thunder - wish we had had more rain. This morning the gauge is totally dry.
7/13/2010 7/14/2010 8:30 AM 2 2.12 M M Three days with soft and hard rains. Last night a strong thunder storm with powerful lightening began at dusk and continued into the night (ca. 8 pm until 11 pm (when i fell asleep. May have lasted longer). Tremendous lightening out over the Bay. I lost power a number of times, only for a few seconds at a time. (I guess our power lines are in pretty good shape!) This morning the rain guage was at 1.22 inches of rain. The grass and flowers are beginning to perk up. Yesterday it was humid and only in the low 80s. The day before, July 13, 2010, it was a hazy day, humid and similar temperatures. Some soft rain fell and I did not even notice it until I saw the wet (damp) sidewalks. The evening storm the day before (july12, 2010) began with slow drizzle) and by 5:45 pm was substantial. The rain gauge held 0.92 inches of water. Today is less hot (75 degrees with a breeze and low humidity) and a few sprinkles during the day. Now at 6 pm, the sky has high puffy white and grey clouds with small amounts of blue sky showing thru. The Bay is grey; more rain may be on the way.
7/26/2010 8/02/2010 7:45 AM 8 0.42 M M I woke up today to a light rain. It is cloudy and patches of bright sun and cream colored and grey blue clouds fill the sky. The gauge had 0.04 inch this morning (Monday the first of August). Starting last Monday, July 26, the gauge held 0.30 inch; Tuesday, the 27th, there was no water; Wednesday the 28th, there was 0.01 water; Thursday and Friday, the gauge held no rain water. Saturday, July 31, there was 0.01 water and Sunday the 31st, there was 0.02. Today is August 2nd, as I reported above, there was 0.04. The light rain stopped by 7:45am yielding only 0.04 inch of rain. (edit: start date changed from cc start to 7/26/2010. P.G.)
8/18/2010 8/20/2010 10:30 AM 3 0.65 M M Wednesday (8-11-10) afternoon's rain filled the cup for Thursday's reading at 8:30 am with 0.64 inch of rain. Overnight, the gauge had 0.01 inch of mist or humidity. The temperatures have moderated (ca. 80 " at noon) and the humidity remains quite heavy and oppressive. there is a very slight breeze - not enough to cool one down.
8/21/2010 8/26/2010 7:45 AM 6 0.06 M M The last five days have been more like September than august. Lower temperatures (60s -80s) and less humidity. the clouds have been beautiful and dramatic. Cummulus whites puffs with pink and blue patches and black threatening lower edges in some places. what rain has come has been more like a very heavy mist - no downpours. Yet the ground has ben wet. This morning there is heavy dew. 8-21-10 (Saturday): 0 8-22-10 (Sunday): 0 8-23-10 (Monday): 0.02 8-24-10 0.03 8-25-10 0.01
8/27/2010 9/03/2010 9:00 AM 8 0.00 M M Today we are beginning to get the edge of the hurricane, Earl. A few raindrops began about 8:30 am. The morning sky, for the first time in a least a week, is gray. For the last week, there has been only bright sunlight and heat in the high 80s and low 90s. Some late afternoon clouds blew through but no rain. Who knows what we will get todsy. I am hopeful that the drought of the last week plus will be broken.
9/3/2010 9/07/2010 9:00 AM 5 0.04 M M Friday's threat of a hurricane (Earl) bringing lots of rain did not pan out. The darkness and early morning clouds gave us only 0.04 inches of rain. Friday cleared up and was a sunny breezy day. Saturday, Sunday and Monday - the Lobor Day Weekend - was beautiful fall weather with tempatures in the 70s and low hunidity. Breezy, lovely days with no moisture.
9/9/2010 9/12/2010 8:55 AM 4 0.48 M M No moisture for several days. Last night between 11 and 12 pm, a soft rain began. It was preseeded by strong winds that sounded like rain. When I went outside to check at 10 pm, it was only wind. The rain is coming from the NW and is steady.
9/29/2010 10/01/2010 11:00 AM 3 9.27 M M The high winds and driving rain of the hurricanes coming up the Atlantic coast have delivered lots of heavy rain and three days of dramatic waves in the Chesapeake Bay as well as strong gusts of wind - at least 30 mph or more. (I was out of town for 6 days returning on Tuesday eve, the 28th of September.) Wednesday the gauge was at 1.02. Perhaps that had fallen during my absence but much of it may have been Tuesday night. Wednesday night the heavy rains began and by the time I emptied the gauge at 1 pm on thursday, it was filled with 4.95 inches of rain. Most of Wednesday and Thursday were overcast and raining, sometimes heavy and other times, mildly. today, Friday, october 1st, the gauge held 3.30 inches. The winds have blown down lots of dead limbs and wiped bunches of leaves off the trees. Beautiful, dramatic and messy!
