I have been away for some time, and will get back into reporting info. I live on the windy side of a lake-- when there is an appreciable snowfall, it rarely does anything but blow horizontally. Therefore, the snow caught in the gauge is rarely an accurate sample of the actual snowfall. Since our place is very well wooded with conifers, the depth of snow on the ground is highly variable. Our gauge is located in one of the few openings we have that is not close to the shore or a building. I measured a core of the existing snow this morning as an initial reading. so far this year, the snow has been pretty dry. we are supposed to get a wet heavy snowstorm on Christmas. by then i should have everything set up to take all the measurements. The core I measured is the best measurement of the potential for runoff/groundwater recharge from the snowpack. However, over the course of the thirty years we have lived here, it seems that more snow is lost to evaporation now than it was years ago. We are on the northern edge of a very severe drought area, and therefore we hope we have a great deal of snow this year. Our seepage lake is down 16 inches from its normal high water mark of years ago. It has lost so much water that it is now lower than its outlet stream, which has dried up. C'mon snow!! |

the temp at 9AM was 18 degrees F, and it was overcast. a light fine snow began to fall as i was taking measurements. due to the warm temps during the Christmas holiday, the snow has condensed. there is a one-half inch layer of light tan snow next to the ground. this is caused, i think, by snowmelt water percolating through the snow when the temps get into the thirties, and coming in contact with leaves and dead grass, causing the tannins in the dead plant material to lightly color the water. when it is in the thirtie, this layer is a thin heavy slush layer right next to the ground which hardens into granular snow when daytime temps lower. |

Lightly overcast-- blue sky beginning to break through. Temperature is 3 degrees above 0, F. The snow that has fallen in the last 24 hours is light and fluffy. Individual snow crystals are very large and easily discernable, and they have packed together very loosely on the ground.
I take total depth core readings seldom because I have few places from which to take them. If I do it every day, I will run out of places to take them long before winter is over. The melted amount of the core of new snow will not be appreciably different from the gauge catch when there is little new snow. Snow depth, within narrow parameters, is quite variable day to day. this is because of differences in the water density of new snowfall, snow sifting off trees on the shore and blowing onto the collection site, and because of wind drift due to the winds coming across the lake. This inherent variability is the nature of lake-effected areas and is an important factor in itself, I think. |

Overcast with a temperature of 25 degrees.
The bright sun and warm temperatures of the last three days (a thermometer in the sun registered 50 degrees yesterday) has caused a significant change in the snowpack. It is more granular, and the snowpack under the conifers is very granular and icy. The core taken in the open has a distinct yellow-tan zone at groundline, indicating that the snowmelt that percolates through the snowpack has been dyed by the tannins in the dead vegetation on the soil surface.

the snow began about 8 AM, so all the snow in the gauge fell in the last hour and a half. It was heavy at first, and has now settled down to a steady fine snow that slacks off at times. the temperature is 29 degrees F. It was very warm yesterday and the snow on the ground is heavy with water. There wasn't much snow in the gauge, it must have had a high water content. |

We received a large amount of rain yesterday (hooray) due to a plume of moist air (a remnant of Hurricane Karl) which rode up over a warm front. Our lake is still 12 inches down from its historic high water mark due to the years long drought that ended this summer, and I can really see this morning that it is higher from this storm event. the rain was a very tropical event as opposed to a normal continental event (we lived in FL on and off for ten years and went through the 2004 hurrican season, so I know the difference.) the rain began, gradually intensifed, and just kept going with no letup from yesterday morning until the middle of the night. Now, we have gusty breezy winds, and the clouds are breaking up a little. Winds gusts, by the Kestrel, are averaging 5 mph, gusting to 9.3. Enjoyed this unusual weather event here, but I guess there is road flooding to our south in Marathon and Lincoln counties, WI. |
