Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A foggy morning. Visibility is very low. The sun is still eking its way up into the horizon. Temperature: 30F Humidity: 87%. Sunny day today, before the rain settles in for tomorrow and the weekend.
10/2/2009 8:15 AM 0.23 M M M M Rain started at 12:30am last night. Still raining at 9:25am.
10/3/2009 9:00 AM 0.25 M M M M An all day rain yesterday, going into the late night hours as well. Overcast sky today, with grey to light black clouds blocking the sun. Temperature: 48F Humidity: 88%. Rain from CoCoraHS gauge (from yesterday and today): 0.48 inches. Rain from electronic weather station gauge (from yesterday and today): 0.56 inches.
10/4/2009 9:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Temperature: 49F Humidity: 85% Wind: 4.4MPH from NW Barometer: 29.90 inHg and the graph shows that it has been rising, a good sign. Stratocumulus clouds this morning. No sun. Maybe we will see some today and fail to see those pesky isolated heavy rain showers.
10/5/2009 8:15 AM T M M M M Long lines of stratocumulus clouds dot the sky this morning. A bit of dew on the ground. Temperature: 47F with 90% humidity. The TRACE report of rain came from the passing showers that came through yesterday during the afternoon. A sunny day is in the forecast but the clouds have to part to make that happen this morning. A thick blanket over the sun. The barometric pressure is 30.10 inHg and slowly rising. A good sign.
10/6/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sprinkling this morning at observation time. Rain came through today starting at 8 AM or so. 0.08 inches in the gauge as of 12:30 PM. Cloudy pre-sunrise morning. Dark blue stratocumulus clouds. Temperature at 12:30: 52F, 78% humidity. Wind is 11.6 MPH from the East. Pressure is 29.75 inHg and dropping quickly.
10/7/2009 8:15 AM 0.64 M M M M Light rain falling sideways this morning due to a strong breeze from the NW. Rain started yesterday around 8 AM and continued throughout the day on and off. A heavy cell with lightning and thunder (sounded like a semi-truck going down the road)came through around 10:01 and brought heavy rain to the area. Quickly passed though. A brilliant full moon last night before the cell came through. Stratocumulus clouds were coming in and covering up the moon, giving way to a wonderful, Halloween-like sky. A breezy and sunny day in the forecast. The pressure is rising quickly: 29.75 InHg. Temperature is 46F with 86% humidity. Wind: 12.2 MPH. Total rain from yesterday and last night with electronic gauge: 1.29 inches. CoCoRaHS gauge: 0.64 inches. A huge difference in rainfall.
10/8/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A light blue sky this morning. Frosty, with orange colored stratus clouds in the south. A bright almost full moon shining in the western sky. Temperature: 40F, Humidity: 94% and the barometer is 30.00 inHg and steady.
10/9/2009 8:15 AM 0.11 M M M M Light rain falling this morning. A big patch of light to moderate rain showers flowing in a south-west to north-east pattern will bring rain for the area throughout the day. Temperature: 47F with 90% humidity. 0.13 inches recorded in the electronic gauge. Barometer is 29.90 inHg and steady. Has not changed in the last 4 or 5 hours.
10/10/2009 9:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Ice on the rim of the rain gauge this morning. Quite a bit of fog covering up the bright rising sun. Temperature: 34F, 92% humidity. Low temperature last night of 31F. Electronic gauge: 0.20 inches. 0.05 inches less than CoCoRaHS gauge.
10/11/2009 8:15 AM 0.03 M M M M Heavy frost this morning. 28F with a thick coating of frost and some ice around the rain gauge. Took in the inner tube and funnel last night because I had a bad feeling that the water, from yesterdays showers early in the evening, inside would freeze. Low temperature last night dropped down to 26F. Stratocumulus clouds this morning, with the sun hiding behind them. With the temperature so cold this morning it is going to take a little while to warm up. High temperature is expected to be somewhere in the mid-40s today. I think it might be a little cooler then that.
10/12/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Grey sky this morning. Brisk outside, but not any trace of wind. Temperature is 34.1F. 83% humidity. Barometer is 30.35 inHg and steady. A very cool day yesterday with once again, well below average temperatures. High temperature yesterday was only 44F, due to the very cold temperatures early in the morning. A warmer day is in the forecast with the temperature mark etching toward 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
10/13/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A clear deep blue sky this morning with a little bit of frost on the ground. The moon is a perfect crescent shape this morning and positioned directly above us. Quite bright too. The sun has yet to get up and shine. A light orange glow is appearing in the horizon, signifying a sunny day.
10/14/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A gray overcast sky this morning. Temperatures in the 30s. A mix of sun and clouds this afternoon. Stratocumulus clouds. 45F as of 3:45pm.
10/15/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Altocumulus clouds fill the sky this morning. Some are shooting up from the horizon in wide plumes, like smoke from a fire. Others are painted in the sky like fish scales. What my weather book calls a Altocumulus: mackerel sky. Temperature: 35F with 73% humidity. Barometer is steady at 30.05 inHg. Temperatures will still be in the 40s today as it has been for several days here. A warm up is coming though this weekend, with temperatures in the 50s by Monday.
10/16/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No sun this morning. Lines of stratocumulus clouds are covering the sky. A similar set up seen many times so far this fall. Temperature is 37.7F with 66% humidity. High temperature yesterday only reached 42F. Well below the average. Barometer is 30.10 inHg and very steady. A mostly cloudy day in store for West Michigan today and over the next couple of days as well. A warm up coming, so they say.
10/17/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast morning once again. Temperature at observation time: 37F. A sunny day during the afternoon but cloudy now. Temperatures in the 40s.

10/19/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Interesting cloud forms this morning. A definite mixed sky. Altostratus, stratus and stratocumulus clouds, covering the entire sky with bits of blue sky breaking through. Temperature: 40F with 76% humidity. The wind is steady at 6 MPH from the south-west. A warmer day today then yesterday with highs reaching the mid-50s. A windy day as well with gusts up to 29 MPH.

10/21/2009 8:40 AM 0.04 M M M M Light drizzle falling at observation time. A gloomy morning with ground fog in the distance. 50 degrees and a ton of humidity, 91%. Wind is 3.3 MPH from the ESE. An interesting note to add to my comments this morning. The barometer is 30.10 inHg, quite high for being so wet this morning, and steady.
10/22/2009 8:15 AM 0.04 M M M M Another 0.04 inches of rain recorded this morning. On and off light rain showers produced the total rainfall observed. 50 degrees, 85% humidity. Fairly windy as well, with a 8 MPH wind from the NW.
10/23/2009 8:15 AM 0.45 M M M M A line of showers came through last night around 9 pm, accompanied with wind up to 25 mph and temperatures in the lower 40s. 0.05 inches of rain before the main line came through last night. A slow moving system, which means up to a half an inch of rain could fall today in moderate to possibly heavy showers. My electronic gauge reads 0.43 inches of rain over the last 24 hours. Still windy at observation time. A 14 MPH wind from the ENE and 40 degrees. The barometer is 29.85 inHg and dropped fast.
10/24/2009 8:15 AM 1.11 M M M M On and off moderate to heavy rain showers early in the day with light rain showers starting at 4pm, gave us our total rainfall of 1.11 inches this morning. Some mist/drizzle last night could be seen in the sky being pushed from east to west by a strong wind (blowing 10 - 20 mph throughout the day yesterday). A light drizzle falling at observation time. The temperature is 41F with 87% humidity. The wind is still blowing with a 10.7 MPH wind from the WNW. A 29.50 InHg barometer reading and has dropped down to 29.30 inHg during the evening hours of last night. It is rising now though, very slowly. Electronic rain gauge total rainfall: 1.48 inches.

10/28/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What looked like a rainy night, turned out to be a dry and cloudy night, with zero inches of rain in the gauge this morning. A mild morning with thin lightly colored altocumulus and stratocumulus clouds. Mild, with a temperature of 46F and 82% humidity.
10/29/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A light pink overcast sky, made pink by the lights coming off of the factories to out east and the downtown area to our south. Light breezes this morning (7.8 MPH from East), making it fairly mild with a temperature of 47F and 88% humidity. The promises of a sunny day with temperatures in the mid-60s seems possible. A beautiful day yesterday. The fall colors and deep blue sky made it perfect. The burning bushes are especially colorful this year.
10/30/2009 8:15 AM 0.70 M M M M What was going to be a partly sunny day yesterday, turned out to be a cloudy, gray overcast day, with temperatures in the lower 50s. Some fog in the morning at 9 am or so, but died off quickly during the afternoon hours. An all night rain last night starting at 11:40 pm, with moderate rain falling at the 8:15 observation time. A huge system coming through extending from the U.P of Michigan all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures this morning are in the lower 50s with light breezes (up to 10 MPH) from the ESE. Humidity levels are high as expected with this rainy weather. The barometer is 29.70 inHg and falling rapidly every hour. Rain is expected to continue for the rest of today and into tonight. Temperatures in the lower 60s today with a slight chance of t-storms. A rare forecast. Electronic gauge rainfall total from 11:40 pm last night to the present: 0.87 inches.
10/31/2009 8:15 AM 1.21 M M M M A gray overcast "October Sky" this morning. A 6.2MPH wind from the WSW. The temperature is a cool 41F. An all day rain yesterday with light to moderate showers until 6pm, then a cloudy sky, followed by more showers starting at 7pm and lasting till the end of the rainfall event at 9pm. A light mist falling at the observation time this morning. I think from one of the trees, drying off their soaked leaves. The mist is brought on by the gusty winds this morning, which come an go quickly. A cooler Halloween then in past years is in the forecast, with a wind advisory in effect.
11/1/2009 9:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Not much rain in the gauge this morning, but enough to count. The light mist yesterday morning lasted until 11 am and was followed by a cloudy day with some stratocumulus, altocumulus, and altostratus cloud features. Stratocumulus clouds this morning and no wind, unlike the last couple of days. The temperature is 40F, a steady temperature. It was 40 degrees when I went to bed last night around 11pm as well. Temperatures will continue to stay in the 40s for highs today and next week.
11/2/2009 8:15 AM 0.02 M M M M A light rain started at 12:50AM, early in the morning hours and is still continuing at the 8:15 observation time. An altocumulus sky off to the East, with gray overcast from the West, South, and North. Temperature is 41F with 68% humidity. 0.00 inches recorded in the electronic gauge. The barometer is 30.10 inHg and steadily dropping. A broken line of showers coming from west to east should make the morning a rather wet one. Cool temperatures will persist once again today, staying below 50 degrees F. Pretty close to normal for early November. The leaves have finally fallen and winter is on its way. It's just a matter of time before it comes. We might see some of that white stuff Wednesday and Thursday. A rain/snow mix is in the forecast so far.
11/3/2009 7:15 AM 0.08 M M M M Light rain showers continued after 8:15 observation time yesterday and ended around 10:30AM. A mixed sky this morning, with altocumulus and altostratus. Mainly altostratus off to the east with quite a few altocumulus clouds filling the sky to the west. A light pink horizon this morning where the sun will rise and greet the new day. Temperature is a cool 36F. The barometer is rather high at 30.20 inHg and steady. A chance of snow showers this morning. Temperatures will continue to hover below the 50 degree mark for highs today. I am leaving in my funnel and inner tube for the rest of the year until next spring, when the snow melts. A mix of rain/snow is still in the forecast later this week.
11/4/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A light gray overcast altostratus sky this morning. Temperature is 33F with 77% humidity. No wind to speak of and the pressure is 30.25 inHg and steady. Yesterday was a beautiful day, with stratocumulus clouds developing for the afternoon. A line of dark (almost pitch black) stratocumulus clouds in the morning, was a very interesting feature for the day. You could see them slowly moving if you watched carefully from a north to south direction. Some dark and gray clouds throughout the day, along with a deep blue sky and a very bright sun, made it picturesque. Long lines of light pink cirrus clouds for sunset was a wonderful end to a partly sunny day.
11/5/2009 7:15 AM 0.01 M M M M Blue gray stratocumulus clouds this morning fill the sky, amid a vanilla colored horizon. Light rain last night after 11pm produced our only precipitation this morning of 0.01 inches. Temperature is 38F with a low temperature of 37F recorded at 5:16am. A light breeze from the WNW at 5.8MPH this morning as well. The barometer is 30.20 inHg and steady. A partly sunny day is in the forecast with temperatures remaining in the lower 40s. Much like yesterday, except more sun. High temperature yesterday: 42F. A strange bit of information this morning. My electronic gauge reads 0.01 inches of rain over the last 24 hours. On the same wavelength as my CoCoRaHS gauge.
11/6/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A heavy frost this morning with a thick layer of ice around the rain gauge. A bright sun out with contours and light cirrus clouds with a light blue sky in the background. Temperature: 30F with 69% humidity. 23F, was the low temperature recorded at 7AM. Stratocumulus, and Altocumulus clouds yesterday with about 60% clouds and 40% sun. Today promises more sun with temperatures lingering in the 40s.
11/7/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bright sunny sky this morning, with not a cloud in the sky, a light blue color. The temperature is mild at 50F and a light breeze from the south. Sunny sky yesterday with altocumulus, fish scale sky, as I call it. Clouds took over as the day progressed. A beautiful moon last night. Light clouds covering the moon, dimming it's brightness. The moon was colored light orange.
11/8/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bright sunny sky this morning. The sun is very bright. A deep blue sky with no clouds to speak of. The temperature is cooler than yesterday morning with 44 degrees F observed. Another sunny day is expected with temperatures in the mid-60s much like yesterday. Very mild!
11/9/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A very mild/warm day yesterday and the mild weather continues with a temperature of 57 degree F. High temperatures yesterday topped 69 degrees, almost 70F. Altostratus clouds and other stratus formations block the dull looking sun this morning. Another mild day is in the forecast with some sun.
11/10/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A cold, frosty, November morning with a temperature of 29 degrees. Altostratus clouds mixed with other stratus formations fill the eastern horizon. The sun has yet to rise but there is a glow coming from the east signaling its arrival. A deep blue sky with a crescent moon promise a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the mid-50s.
11/11/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful morning at the 8:15 observation time. Temperature is 25F with a thick layer of frost around the rim of the rain gauge and a coating of frost on the grown. The sun is bright compared to the deep blue sky. Sunset last night was wonderful. Long lines of deep pink altostratus clouds along with a gold colored horizon. The pressure is very high this morning (30.55 inHg), a trend which has continued over the last couple of days, bringing us this absolutely gorgeous weather. A great day to honor our Veterans who have laid down their lives to keep this country free. Low temperature last night, 22F. A new low temperature for the month. Temperatures are expected to rise into the 50s much like yesterday.
11/12/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A chilly, frosty morning once again today. Birds fill the sky at the observation time, heading south east toward the rising sun. A light orange horizon. Temperature is 21F and not a cloud in the sky. A pinkish horizon off to the north. The barometer has com down and is steady at 30.35 inHg. Another sunny day expected with temperatures still hovering in the 50s.
11/13/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny morning, but the sun is not as bright as in previous mornings. Stratus clouds cover the sun and the horizon. White and very light scattered along the horizon and rising into the eastern sky. Not as cold of a morning with a temperature of 36F. The low temperature last night did drop below freezing though (29F). Yesterday was sunny for the first part of the morning with a fog bank coming in around the 10 am hour. The fog lasted until 11 am, when it finally died off and light puffy stratocumulus clouds with some sun came into the picture. A very interesting event. The pressure dropped about 0.10 inHg during the event and went back to normal after it passed through. Another beautiful day is in the forecast with continued cloud lines in the sky along with some sun. Fog is once again expected this morning.
11/14/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful morning today. Once again abundant sunshine and a deep blue sky. Some light stratus clouds forming. Yesterday evening brought some very interesting cloud features to the area. Altocumulus, fish scale sky, and cirrostratus, colored gold and pink. Temperature is 48F this morning. Much more mild than previous mornings. The barometer is still hanging below the 30.00 inHg mark at 29.90 InHg. A cloudy day is in the forecast but we may get more sun than they are predicting.
11/15/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A mostly cloudy morning with a little sun trying to peek through the mainly cirrus and stratocumulus cloud formations. The stratocumulus is a darkish blue while the cirrus is white and hovering high straight above our heads and in the eastern horizon. A little bit cooler than yesterday with a temperature of 40F. The wind is at 5MPH from the north west. 30.05 inHg is the barometer report this morning and it has been climbing over the last 12 hours, but has been steady over the last 5 hours or so. A cloudy day is in the forecast, but I think we will see some sunshine as in previous days. Still mild with temperatures in the mid-50s. 10 degrees or so above average. Yesterday we reached 62F for the high temperature. A very unusual trend as we approach the official start to winter.
11/16/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Temperatures in the mid-30s at the 8:15 observation time this morning. A cirrus and stratus sky this morning, with some sun breaking through the light orange colored clouds. A cloudy afternoon for the most part with some distant clearing off to the north. Stratus clouds. Lightly colored gray in some spots. Cirrus clouds are still hanging around. High temperature today reached 46F with a low of 26F last night.
11/17/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A rather bright orange colored horizon this morning. Frost covers the ground and the tops of houses. A snow like appearance on the roofs. 31 degrees. Not a cloud in the sky. A deep blue color. The barometer is 30.25 inHg and steady. More sun in the forecast today than yesterday. Stratus and cirrus clouds took over yesterday afternoon, blocking the sun. A little bit of sun did peek through but not enough to cast shadows. Cooler temperatures yesterday in the 40s. That trend is expected to continue into today with temperatures a little warmer than yesterday in the upper 40s, closer to the average mark for November.
11/18/2009 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Some clouds this morning, but the sun is still shining. Pock marked altocumulus fill the north and western sky. Some stratus formations as well. The altocumulus is a clear white while the other clouds seem to be gray and dark. Some wind this morning. A 12.2MPH wind from the east was reported around the observation time with a temperature of 39F. Not as cold a morning as yesterday. Interesting cirrus formations yesterday during the evening hours and late afternoon. Lightly colored wispy clouds with some darker ones mixed in. Sunny weather is expected to continue into today. A chance of some rain over the weekend. We certainly need it. Only 0.14 inches of rain so far this November.
11/19/2009 7:15 AM 0.12 M M M M Just over a tenth of an inch of rain in the outer funnel this morning. Rain started after 11 pm or so. 44F with 92% humidity. There is a light wind from the SSW at 3.9 MPH. Medium sized gray cumulus rain clouds all around us. 0.08 inches of rain in the electronic gauge this morning. Some rain during the morning, but it should calm down as the day goes on.
11/20/2009 8:15 AM 0.16 M M M M On and off drizzle for much of yesterday before the rain ended around 9PM or so. Some moderate showers during the morning hours before 12PM and during the evening hours between 6 and 9PM. Total rainfall from yesterday and today: 0.30 inches. 0.44 inches for the month. 0.19 inches of rain for the 24 hour period in the electronic gauge and 0.27 inches of total rainfall. A mild morning with 44F and high humidity, 88%. A mix of altostratus and stratocumulus clouds. Very gloomy and gray looking. A sad site, considering all the sun we had before these two rainy days. 13 days of sunshine without any rain. The last time we had a dry period was in September when we had 3 straight weeks of dry weather. The rain was needed though so we can't complain too much about that. 30.10 inHg is the barometer reading this morning and is showing signs of going up. We still have a chance of showers today but sunshine is in the forecast with temperatures in the 50s for the weekend. A brief interesting note is the movement of these showers. The past couple of days I have seen some come in to the area, such as the yesterday morning showers, which moved in a SE to NW direction. Later that day the pattern shifted and another line of showers came in moved in from a SW to NE direction. It seems like the weather is a little confused. Very interesting patterns over the last couple of days to say the least.
11/21/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A mild 42F with high humidity, hovering in the mid 90% - 100% range. Dense fog outside this morning, covering up any cloud formations above as well as distant buildings. Isolated visibility. Visibility at the airport is 0.5 miles, but in this location I would say it is about no more than 500 feet. Looks like this trend of foggy weather will continue into the next couple of days. The fog should lift by the afternoon hours and temperatures should warm up into the 50s. Some snow is in the forecast for next week. Should be very interesting to see how much we receive.
11/22/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another foggy morning, but a little foggier than yesterday. Visibility is very limited. Quite a bit cooler outside than yesterday, 31F. The humidity is still high at 93%, and very damp outside. 30.25 inHg is the barometer report. It has climbed quite a bit in the past 12 hours or so. A cloudy day is in the forecast. Yesterday at around noon the fog cleared and so did the clouds. A sunny day, with light blue skies, showed up after a couple of gloomy days.
11/23/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little bit of fog outside. Not as dense as yesterday or the day before. The temperature is not too cold at 40 degrees F. A little bit of wind out there though at 9.3MPH from the east. Humidity is still high, at 89%. The barometer is steady at 30.25 inHg. A very gray overcast sky with undefined clouds. They look like some sort of cumulus though. Altocumulus would be my guess. I did feel some drizzle falling at the 8:15 observation time. There is a chance of some light precipitation but it should not amount to anything. Looks like we will get some more of this foggy weather for tomorrow and then some wet weather going into Tuesday night and Wednesday. Winter weather settles in on Thanksgiving day and the holiday weekend coming up. Sunny weather though for Saturday and Sunday with temperatures back to normal. The average high temperature so far for the month has been 53F. This is the highest average high temperature for November we have had here since installing the weather station and keeping the records in 2005.
11/24/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A very light fog outside off to the west and east. Visibilities are quite high. The temperature is a mild 42 degrees, with a humidity reading of 87%. A light 2.8MPH wind out of the east-north-east. The barometer is still hanging around in the lower 30.00 range at 30.15 inHg. Yesterday was gloomy and overcast after the fog cleared. Temperatures for highs were in the mid-40s, which is closer to the average mark. Another cloudy day is in the forecast. Some rain headed are way, but the snow should come in by Thanksgiving day.
11/25/2009 8:15 AM 0.26 M M M M Dark cumulus and possible nimbostratus clouds moving south to north with light drizzle falling, greet this morning's observation report. 45F, 89% humidity and the barometer is 29.75 inHg and has fallen since 8:15 to 29.70. The graph shows the pressure slowly falling in the past 12 hours. An 8.4 MPH wind from the SSW as well. The rain came in around 11:10PM last night. Some heavy showers mixed with light showers for the rest of the night. A heavy shower around 7:30AM came rolling in, that was especially heavy compared to the others. 0.34 inches of rain is the total for the electronic gauge, compared to 0.26 inches with the CoCoRaHS gauge. Some more showers are expected for the rest of today and tonight with a mix of rain/snow coming in for Thanksgiving day. Cooler temperatures for tomorrow. Only in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Temperatures should reach the 50 degree mark today. This slow moving system is moving south to north and it seems like it originated from the Missouri area.
11/26/2009 9:00 AM 0.12 M M M M A light drizzle falling at 9AM. The temperature was 38F, with 88% humidity. 0.3MPH wind from the south and the barometer was 29.75 InHg and steady (has gone down quite a bit over the last 12 hours though). On and off heavy and light rain showers for yesterday and last night. Rain is moving in a north to south pattern, with a small patch of rain/snow mix just north of us, headed our way. Should be very interesting to see what the weather does this afternoon. 0.17 inches of rain in the electronic gauge. A 0.05 inch difference from the electronic and CoCoRaHS gauge. Happy Thanksgiving!
11/27/2009 9:00 AM 0.22 M M M M Rain in the gauge was frozen solid this morning. I had to bring it inside and pour some warm water in to loosen up the ice. Light rain yesterday mixed with some snow between 2 and 3PM. Some light rain on and off for the rest of the day and last night. Flurries falling around 9:30 this morning as well. 32F. 77% humidity. The wind is 11MPH from the NW. 0.23 inches of rain in the electronic gauge. Only 0.01 in. difference. A cloudy day in the forecast. A mix of stratocumulus and altostratus cloud formations this morning. The wind is really coming off the lake. A definite lake effect pattern. Looks like the sun is trying to break through the thick gray clouds. A overcast day is in the forecast and temperatures in the lower 40s for highs. The threat for snowfall is out the picture and sunny weather is expected for Saturday with temperatures reaching the high point for the rest of the month, at 45F. The last warm spell before a bit of cooler weather comes in for next week.
11/28/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The first sunny morning in west Michigan in a LONG time. A big bright sun just creeping over the horizon. Some cirrus clouds in the sky, but nothing to stop the big orange ball in the sky from shining. The temperature is a cool 28F, with 81% humidity. The pressure is steady at 29.90 inHg. Looks like this sunny weather will not continue for long as a chance of rain and snow showers are in the forecast for next week. Yesterday was quite cold for this time of year with temperatures only in the mid-30s for highs. A warmer day is in the forecast though, with temperatures reaching the mid-40 degree mark.
11/29/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A rather cold morning with temperatures hovering around 34F. 91% humidity and a pressure reading of 29.80 inHg and VERY steady. The pressure has not moved in at least 5 hours or so. Gloomy overcast sky in the picture at 9AM. A brief siting of the sun at 9AM, but the clouds quickly covered up any sign of clearing. Looks like a chance of some snow today, but it should not accumulate to anything. Temperatures in the mid to upper 30s for highs.
11/30/2009 8:15 AM 0.03 M M M M A little bit of precipitation in the outer tube of the rain gauge this morning. The rain was from the light rain showers which came through during the late morning hours yesterday. An altocumulus/altostratus sky yesterday afternoon made is seem like some snow could have fallen, but did not see any of the white stuff. Temperatures this morning are just above the freezing mark at 33F. 80% is the humidity. Cloud formations take the form of stratocumulus and altocumulus. Some are colored pink with some blue sky poking through in the background. A very pretty picture. The clouds over the last couple of days have taken the form of winter clouds it seems. Very wispy and dark in color. Some even have a blueish color which add to the mystery of them. These clouds signal a start to cold and snowy winters in Michigan. Electronic gauge was off only by 0.01 inches this morning at 0.02 inches over the last 24 hours.
12/1/2009 7:15 AM 0.05 M M M M A light orange glow in the horizon at the 7:15 observation time this morning. Some rather black stratus clouds off to the east, but otherwise a clear blue sky. No snow on the ground at all. It rained a little bit last night starting around the 7PM hour or so. Both gauges, including the electronic gauge, read 0.05 inches. 34 degrees outside and 77% humidity. It looks like we're in for a rather sunny day. Yesterday was filled with big, dark cumulus clouds with blue skies shining through. Not too much sun though, but today we should see more. Temperatures will rise into the 40s today and into tomorrow and then some snowy and colder weather, with possible accumulations, will set in late this week. Should be a very interesting week starting on Thursday.
12/2/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A classic altocumulus, fish scale sky this morning. The sun is hovering behind these clouds, along with some stratus and a little bit of cirrus formations. There is a heavy frost this morning. All the houses are covered white with frost. The temperature is 33 degrees, with 80% humidity, much like yesterdays reading. A barometer reading of 29.80 inHg is fairly low this morning. A mostly cloudy day is in the forecast, as was yesterday. Some sun did peek through yesterday amid altostratus and stratocumulus clouds for much of the day. A long line of statocumulus clouds came through around 4pm or so and made the evening even more cloudy than earlier in the day. This line looked like a hurricane coming through. Very impressive. The snow appears to be coming in tonight with a rain/snow mix expected transitioning to all snow by tomorrow and on. Accumulations are looking fairly light for now.
12/3/2009 7:15 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Not even a trace of snow on the ground or in the gauge this morning. Because the ground is so warm it is going to be hard for the snow to stick without melting on impact. Some light flurries falling, with a temperature of 33F and a humidity of 82%. My electronic gauge reads 0.02 inches of rain over the last 24 hours. It is still dark out there but can make our some long lines of stratus clouds. Snow is on the way as we are expected to receive about an inch or so today and tonight. A very cold day with temperatures hanging around the freezing mark, causing the snow.
12/4/2009 8:15 AM 0.03 0.9 0.03 1.0 0.03 Fist measurable snow of the season and for me as a CoCoRaHS reporter! A pleasant start to the day. The snow on the ground from yesterday is a nice white coating on the ground and on top of houses. Long lines of pink to dark black stratus cover up the sun a little bit, but it is peaking through. Enough to give off shadows on the glistening snow. The main reading this morning is off, due to my own stupidity in not recording how much warm water I added to the outer tube to melt the snow in it. So, I took a core sample from the ground near the gauge and am using that as the rain/melted snow reading over the last 24 hours. Hopefully, as I learn to do this, I won't make the same mistake. That was a big one, for sure! 26 degrees outside made my hands freeze off ALMOST, so I will wear gloves next time! Humidity is 68%. The barometer is going up at 30.05 inHg. Light winds at 0.7MPH from the west. A wonderful day to start, but snow is in the forecast. Maybe I will get another chance tomorrow to melt the snow the right way. The total snowfall reading is taken from three locations around my house, and then averaging all those readings. Even though this is quite a bit of work, I think that it is the most accurate way I can measure the snow here.
12/5/2009 8:15 AM 0.01 0.1 M 1.0 0.02 This morning I did the correct procedures for measuring the snow, and turned out with quite accurate measurements, I do believe. A snowy morning. Light snow falling with the sun hiding behind the clouds. Stratus, colored pink and gray. 24 degrees once again this morning. Quite cold and the humidity is 61%. A 30.10 inHg barometer reading shows signs of some clearing today possibly. About an inch of snow on the ground if that. I hope to get an actual snowboard up for measuring the snow. Hopefully I can get that done next week.
12/6/2009 8:15 AM 0.03 0.8 M 1.5 0.05 A beautiful sunrise this morning. During my measurement readings the sun popped up in to the sky. A big reddish orange ball. Very pretty. The clouds are mainly cumulus. Thick and dark. 25F is the temperature. 74% humidity. The barometer is rather high at 30.15 inHg and fairly steady. On and off snow showers yesterday. Light flakes falling even now. Heavy snow between 2 and 3PM yesterday. A chance of snow every day now, for all of next week including today. Winter is official here!
12/7/2009 8:15 AM 0.07 1.1 M 2.0 0.14 Heavy snow falling at the 8:15 observation time. The temperature is fairly close to freezing at 27 degrees, making it a wet snowfall. The ground is now pretty much covered with snow. A big winter storm is on its way. Looks like we might easily get 6 inches from Tuesday night into Wednesday evening.
12/8/2009 7:00 AM 0.01 0.3 M 1.5 M Very interesting stratus formations this morning, colored pink from the factory lights. Other pink clouds off to the north and south. A eerie sky. The signs of the snowy weather to come. 22 degrees F is the temperature reading, with 79% humidity. The barometer is quite high at 30.30 inHg. A winter storm warning is in effect for tonight into tomorrow. Looks like we could easily get a half a foot of snow tonight and more in the coming days. Today is the day to build a snow board!
12/9/2009 8:15 AM 0.31 2.8 M 5.0 M Snow falling at the 8:15 observation time. The winds are relatively light compared to last night. Gusts up to 30MPH here. A very heavy wet snow, hard to shovel. Everything looks very nice. The dirt is all covered up and the trees are pure white with freshly fallen snow hanging off their limbs. 31.7F is the temperature with a high humidity reading of 93%. The barometer is OFF THE CHARTS this morning, and I mean OFF THE CHARTS at 28.90 inHg, VERY LOW!!! We did not get as much snow here as they predicted about 2 inches from last night. Snow can be very localized though, so I think it might be just around my location here, but overall we got quite a bit.
12/10/2009 7:00 AM 0.12 1.4 M 5.0 M A light coating of snow on the ground this dark and cold morning. 20F and 72% humidity. The barometer is higher today at 29.60 inHg and rapidly going up. Some gusty winds last night, made the snow blow around, so I don't know how much NEW snow is on the ground, not snow from the drifts along the roads. A cold day in the forecast with temps in the teens, dropping all day. Wind chills are expected to go down into the sub-freezing range.
12/11/2009 8:15 AM 0.13 1.5 M 5.0 M Light snow falling at 8:15. A different type of snow then a couple of days ago, very light and fluffy, which is why the temperatures have been very cold. Temperature this morning is 11F. Yesterday they stayed in the teens. Wind chills have been another problem. Sub-freezing wind chills have been common. Right now the wind chill is 11F, but it has been as low as -17F last night. Winds yesterday were really whipping the snow up from the ground, forming little snow tornadoes (as I call them). Very impressive. We'll continue to see these cold temperatures and windy conditions today. With this kind of weather, you can't afford to stay outside for long.
12/12/2009 6:00 AM 0.03 0.4 M 5.0 M A very cold, frosty morning. The gauge was totally covered in heavy frost. A little bit of snow in the gauge, just enough to count. 1 degree is the temperature. 57% the humidity. Some light/heavy snow showers yesterday morning, led to some sun during the afternoon, with sun pillars late in the day, and wonderful dark black cumulus. A sunny day is in the forecast, as the skies are crystal clear and a crescent moon is shining. A TRACE of new snow accumulation this morning, because I measured the snow yesterday at 12:55pm before the sun could have gotten at it. This was done as a precaution.
12/13/2009 8:15 AM 0.08 0.3 M 4.5 M A balmy morning, temperatures in the lower 30s. The snow is sticky with a new accumulation of wet snow and freezing rain particles on top of the old snow. A gray day with cumulus clouds hovering around. Some stray lake effect snow showers possible every day next week. A little snow melt yesterday with the sun peeking out throughout the afternoon. Stratus clouds ended the melt late in the day. The melt gave us a loss of a half an inch from past days. 4.5 inches is the new total snow on the ground as of this morning.
12/14/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.0 M More snow melt yesterday and this morning. With the current warming trend we have lost just about an inch of our snow and it is still melting into the ground. Temperatures have been steady around the freezing mark. 32F is the temperature at 8:15 and quite humid, 87%. Some light rain falling at the observation time as well, might have been a mix, but to me it seemed like rain. A few drops in the big outer cylinder, but no new snow accumulation on the ground or in the gauge.
12/15/2009 8:15 AM 0.05 0.2 M 4.0 M Light snow falling and cooler temperatures greet the 8:15 observation time. Only a light coating of new snow on the three spots where I measure new snow. A couple of inches expected today with cooler temperatures in the upper 20s. 26F and 72% humidity.
12/16/2009 8:40 AM 0.04 0.4 M 4.0 M A little bit of light snow falling at observation time. Some new snow accumulation from the numerous moderate to heavy lake effect snow bands yesterday. Very light and fluffy snow due to the cold temperatures yesterday and today, only in the lower 20s and in the teens. 14F and 60% humidity. The barometer is at 30.45 inHg and rising slowly. With this light and fluffy snow and cold temperatures, cross country skiing should be a must considering our up and down winters. This new snow covering is very light though, with thick ice just below it from some melting and freezing.
12/17/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.0 M Cold air out there this morning, 7 degrees. Light snow yesterday made accumulations lite and not enough to record this morning. Only a few flakes in the gauge with a heavy coating of ice all around the tube. We have a thin coating of light fluffy snow on top of an inch thick of ice with more light snow just below that layer (about 2 inches). A very interesting snow depth, caused by the melting and freezing over the last week. The recent cold temperatures (in the teens and twenties), have led to the freezing of that once sticky snow, causing the thin layer of ice just below the 0.6 inches of snow on the top surface.
12/18/2009 8:40 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.0 M 16F, a stratus pink sky and winds are calm and mainly from the east. A rather warm day with temperatures in the lower 30s, just around the freezing mark. An additional note. My friend (Don MI-ME-3), had a remark about insolation this morning. I just looked it up online and here is what it is. Insolation is a measure of solar radiation energy received on a given surface area in a given time. Good job Donnie for making me look this one up. Very interesting!
12/19/2009 8:30 AM 0.02 0.4 M 4.5 M A light dusting of snow on the ground this morning. Light and fluffy. We received about a half an inch of new snow which is quite a bit for one night, considering the forecast for snow was in the 40-50% range. I saw some lake effect coming from the south and heading north last night on the radar around 10pm or so. That must have been the snow we received. The sky is 8 Oktas and filled with long trails of stratus clouds, colored light blue. The temperature, 27 degrees F, is quite mild compared to the new snow accumulation. The dewpoint is 20 degrees F, and the humidity is at 75%. 29.95 inHg is the barometer reading and has not moved in over 5 hours! Lake effect snow is possible every day over the next week. Temperatures appear to be hovering around the freezing mark, which is average for this month. I hope that Washington D.C. and all other towns along the east coast, take it easy with all the snow they are expected to receive. 2 feet is possible in Washington, while a foot is possible in NYC. This is a very rare event indeed. When was the last time NYC or Washington had a big snow event like this? Just a curious thought.
12/20/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Only a few flakes in the ice covered gauge. Light snow showers yesterday resulted in little or no accumulation. A few flakes on the new snow measuring areas, but nothing to record. The sunrise this morning is a deep reddish-pink color and filled with stratus clouds. Light snow flakes are falling as well adding to the quite and peaceful scene. 19 degrees is the temperature outside. New snow accumulations of up to a half an inch are possible today with more snow into tonight and tomorrow. Accumulations should be light, but who knows this time of year. Note: the current snow depth rose from 4.5 inches to 5 inches, because I changed some of the locations I measure current snow depth and they seem to receive more snow. I don't know how accurate this number is either because the spots I now use for measuring total snow depth are surrounded by dear tracks, squirrel tracks and other animals tracks. It is very hard around here to find a spot that is not in the way of animals or people, so we will have to do our best with what we have!
12/21/2009 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M A few flakes or ice particles in the big outer funnel, but nothing to report. Big dark cumulus clouds fill the horizon while there is some signs of clearing up higher in the sky. Still 8 Oktas, as was yesterday. 23 degrees. 74% humidity. The barometer is steady at 30.05 inHg. Looks like we will not get as much snow as they were calling for. A chance of snow though for today. A messy Christmas week is coming up though, with the chance of a rain/snow mix and possible, dare I say it, freezing rain.
12/22/2009 8:15 AM 0.03 0.3 M 5.0 M What started out to be a gloomy and cold winter's day, ended up being a bright and sunny winter's day. A little bit of new snow on the ground from yesterday's brief heavy lake effect snow showers. This morning the temperature was at 6 degrees and rose rapidly up to 25 degrees as of 12:30 in the afternoon. Not a cloud in the sky and it is looking like a wonderful day. Long lines of dark stratocumulus formation were the dominant cloud features this morning. Even then the sun was trying to peak through the clouds, and in the process gave the clouds a bright gold tint color.
12/23/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M A gloomy overcast morning. 8 Oktas. Some blue sky behind the big cumulus, but signs of clearing appear to be almost impossible. A sunny day is in the forecast though, so maybe the clouds will clear sometime this morning or afternoon. The first thing I noticed when I walked outside this morning was the wind. At 11MPH from the ENE. A sign of the breezy weather along with the possibility of freezing rain/sleet/rain/snow all mixed in over the next couple of days. This is our Christmas present for West Michigan!
12/24/2009 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M A rather windy morning. My hand-held anemometer read a top wind speed of 12 MPH coming from the south east. The weather station anemometer reads the wind coming from the ENE, so it is swirling around out there. I measured the temperature of the snow and it read between the -8 to -12 degree mark around the places I measure total snow depth. Very interesting. No new snow to report this morning and a temperature of 23F. That rather warm temperature means that we could easily hit the freezing mark today. The chance of rain/sleet/snow/freezing rain still remains tonight and tomorrow. A treacherous forecast!
12/25/2009 9:00 AM 0.15 0.0 M 5.0 M 32F at 9:00. Gusty winds up to 20MPH, make it a gloomy and somewhat foggy Christmas day. A solid sheet of ice on the roads as well as on some of my snow observation platforms. I accidentally dumped out some of the freezing rain, rain and ice in the gauge, so the precip. reading this morning is not totally accurate. Freezing rain/sleet/rain are the factors this morning. We still have 5 inches of snow on the ground, with a thin coating of ice layered on top. Rain falling at observation time as well. I hope everyone out there has a wonderful Christmas and travels safe out there. Mother nature is giving us just a different kind of weather event, which we should face with caution. Merry Christmas!
12/26/2009 10:00 AM 0.42 0.8 M 5.5 M Sorry about the late report this morning. I stayed up way past my bed time. This will be the first time I will not be seen on the maps. Temperature is 24 degrees at 10 AM. Some light breezes (7.9 MPH from SW) at the VERY LATE observation time. A lite coating of snow on top of the ice covered ground. The gauge had a thin coating of the white stuff on top of about a quarter of an inch or so of solid ice. I am still melting that ice as I write these comments. Looks like we will be getting back to NORMAL weather for this time of year. What a Christmas yesterday, the walkways were like skating rinks and at times the rain/freezing rain came down and hit your face like tiny pin balls. Not very pleasant. Quite a bit of the moisture that came through ended up being rain, which surprised me. I was not thinking that we were going to get much rain, just freezing rain. Temps as expected were in the mid-30s causing about an inch or so of our 5 inches of snow on the ground to shrink down to 4 inches or so. This light coating of fresh, white, and NOT STICKY snow this morning should take the place of that lost snow as NEW SNOW! Today seems more like Christmas to me. It makes up for all the yucky weather we have had over the last couple of days.
12/27/2009 7:00 AM 0.08 1.7 M 7.0 M A chilly 20 degrees on the weather decks this morning. Quite a bit of snow yesterday and last night. Very light and fluffy. Perfect cross-country skiing weather. As I looked out my window this morning before the 7:00AM observation time (we have church early this morning due to the cancellation of services on Christmas Eve, due to weather), I noticed big and gray cumulus clouds hovering above. A very interesting feature. I cross country skied last night on the big field right next to our property. The snow at times blew right into my face from the east and then switched over to the south-east. It seemed to me like the big patch of lake enhanced snow was moving in a counter clockwise motion and yet somehow moving from the south-west to the north-east. I did look at the radar when I came in from skiing and it did appear to be moving in that direction and yet rotating counter clockwise at the same time. I guess that is why we got the bands off to the east of us. The skiing was very hard out there because I could not keep the tracks clean, so I called it quits after an hour an half of exercise. A light dusting of snow is possible today. The radar shows a big band off to the west along the lake shore which might mean some accumulation for us in west central Michigan.
12/28/2009 9:00 AM 0.06 1.4 M 7.5 M Light snow falling at 9AM. A rather mild 28 degrees, and we have light breezes from the west. Heavy snow falling after 9:30 and still falling at 10:30. This morning we topped the 7.5 inches of total snow mark. Very impressive. Who says this is global warming? 31 degrees is the average high temperature for December so far, even though 2010 is rolling around the corner here. The overall average is 33 degrees. So we are down a couple degree marks from that. We have had just over a foot of snow. 14 inches, to be exact. Down from the amazing snow total last December of around 50 inches.
12/29/2009 8:15 AM 0.09 0.9 M 7.0 M Light snow falling at the regular 8:15 observation time, becoming much harder as I measured the new snow depth. We have had considerable drifting and blowing snow. Some new snow has fallen though. 0.6 inches from 9AM to 11:45AM yesterday and another 0.3 inches since then, giving us a grand total of 0.9 inches of snow. After many gloomy and snowy days, the sun came out yesterday. During sunset, big black cumulus clouds moving quickly from north to south, revealed the undulating landscape of snow dunes. A very pretty postcard picture. Winds did get up to 24MPH last night and yesterday after noon. The temperature really took a dive as well after noon, from 30 degrees at noon, to 23 degrees by 5PM. A cooler day today is in the forecast with temps hovering in the lower 20s. Temperature right now is 18 degrees. As Donnie (MI-ME-3) noted, we had near white-out conditions around the area, in the city we only had a few instances of a true white-out. The worst white out occurred during the early to mid-afternoon when heavy snow was falling reducing visibilities. Localized white-out conditions occurred later on in the day when the snow on top of the houses and buildings whipped around along the ground and in the air, making it hard to walk without being blasted with the light and fluffy, yet powerful snow.
12/30/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M No new snow to report this morning, 17 degrees and a blue colored overcast sky. Signs of the rising sun are coloring the eastern horizon a dull orange color. After many days of snow and cloudy weather, we finally received a well deserved sunny day yesterday. Temperatures were cold but the sun was very bright on the white and icy snow. Stratus clouds with altocumulus (fish scale clouds), were the primary cloud features for yesterday and into last night. A wonderfully bright full moon last night. You hardly needed a flashlight to see where you were going. The moon was bright enough to cast shadows of trees. A sight I have seen before, that reminded me of an old kids book I used to read called "Owl Moon."
12/31/2009 8:15 AM 0.09 0.8 M 7.5 M A very gloomy morning compared to the last few days. No wind to speak of and a little bit of mist/fog also. The temperature is edging closer to freezing. 29 degrees at 8:15 and now 30 degrees already. A wet/fluffy mix of new snow this morning. An interesting type of snow, not fluffy, but not sticky. The snow showers last night really became intense at times. One of the snow showers which came through, made snow that fell like very tiny ice crystals and kind of reminded me of a mix of precipitation. If you looked closely though on each flake, you could see the traditional snowflake shape to them. More snow is on the way today and into tomorrow. This has been quite a wet winter. We gained a half an inch of snow (7 inches to 7.5 inches) and something really strange also has happened. We had the same precipitation in the gauge as yesterday. A rare treat! I wish everyone in the CoCoRaHS family a happy and prosperous New Year for 2010. I also hope that the weather for 2010 is sunny every day and rainfall is not to much and not too little, but just right. Happy New year everybody! Welcome 2010.
1/1/2010 8:15 AM 0.02 0.1 M 7.5 M A beautiful sunrise to begin 2010. A mix of yellow, blue, and pink stratus. A group of black altocumulus clouds just above the still dormant sun. Not only is the sunrise special this morning, but the setting moon, a brilliant white glow and huge in the north-west horizon. The small group of pine trees off to the north-west, make a really neat background for the moon. It is full and hard to miss. I stepped right out the door and there it was. A warm welcome to 2010. Cold weather has hit. 18 degrees was the temperature at 8:15. The temperature since then has not gone up, but down to 17 degrees. Humidity has dropped as well from 60% at 8:15 to 56% now. There are light winds (6.2MPH at 8:15 from NW) out there which add to the cold weather, giving us wind chill readings in the singe digits. We have had our first little bit of precipitation for 2010. 0.02 inches. Not much, but it's a start. 0.10 inches of new snow, and the total snow depth has gone slightly down, but my rounding up to a half an inch still gives us 7.5 inches of total snow on the ground. A sunny day seems to be in the books judging by the sunrise, but the forecast is showing for more snow showers today and in the next 10 days. Cooler weather as well. Looks like we may have highs in the upper teens to lower 20s. January has come!
1/2/2010 8:00 AM T T M 7.0 M Hardly enough new snow to report this morning, but some of my observation areas have a dusting of snow on them, nothing to write home about though. It is very cold outside. 5 degrees at 8:00AM and now 4 degrees. The temperature seems to be dropping from 8 degrees at 7AM down to 4 degrees now. A full moon once again, clear skies, and a sunny start to the day appears to be happening. The chance of snow lingers though, with highs today only in the teens. Only a few flakes in the gauge. A trace of new precip.
1/3/2010 8:15 AM T T M 7.0 M A warm 9 degrees, compared to the low temperature of 0 degrees at 9:30 pm last night. The temperature went up last night and never left the 5 to 11 degree marks. There are light flurries falling, but there is not a cloud in the sky. A strange phenomenon, which I have not seen many times. The horizon is orange, so another sunny morning is in order. Yesterday morning was actually warm with the sun baking the cold snow. The winter cumulus clouds slowly took over and by sunset the sun was immersed by the clouds, leaving only a solid reddish-orange glow to the western horizon. The moon has been wonderful to view these days. With just binoculars it is amazing how much appears through the two lenses. The "trace" report of new snow is fairly accurate. We do have just a hair of new snow above the 0.00 inch mark. Not much, but enough to count. The snow is compacting more and more every day. We now have 7.08 inches of snow on the ground, and have lost about a half an inch over the last couple of days due to compacting.
1/4/2010 8:15 AM T 0.1 M 7.5 M A light dusting of snow on the observation spots with light, but fairly breezy winds from the NNW, is the weather story this morning. The temperature is fairly mild at 20 degrees and steady. These winds have caused the snow to move around quite a bit, especially in the areas where I measure total snow depth. We have gained about 0.30 inches of new snow, and about a tenth of new snow, so that tells me that some of the new accumulation has been the result of drifting. The chance of snow showers today and for the rest of the week continue with temperatures hovering in the lower 20s. We can be thankful that the highs will not be in the teens, because with this wind, it would be brutally cold outside.
1/5/2010 8:15 AM T 0.0 M 7.0 M About 5 to 10 flakes in the gauge this morning, enough to call it a "Trace" of new precipitation. No new snow accumulation though. We had a very overcast day yesterday, with some light snow showers in the morning. Long lines of stratus around the noon hour, with more cumulus coming into view for the rest of the afternoon. Another mild morning at 23 degrees. We still have light winds coming from the NW, NNW, and North. Our snow depth continues to change as compacting and drifting are playing a big roll in that department so far this January.
1/6/2010 8:15 AM 0.03 0.2 M 7.0 M A light dusting of new snow. Some ice accumulation from last night as well mixed in with the new snow. The thick cumulus clouds are starting to part, but I don't think we will see clear skies today. Temperatures have still been fairly mild. 24 degrees at 8:15 and still 24 degrees as of 8:35. NW winds have still prevailed with light winds continuing under 10 MPH. The precipitation forecast for January was calling for below average precip. It seems that so far this has been true for January, but we still have a long way to go in the month.
1/7/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 1.45 A gray overcast sky this morning. The cumulus is very thick, and the temperature is a little cooler then yesterday, hovering at 22 degrees. We have a shift in the winds, now coming from the ENE, but very light at 5MPH. I did a total snow depth core sample this morning and found some very interesting things regarding the current snow we have on the ground. There is a thin layer of ice on top of a fairly small chunk of light fluffy snow. Under this light fluffy snow is another layer of ice, but much thicker, with a dusting of light snow under this level. What fascinates me is the how thick the layer of ice is at the bottom. This is from the freezing rain/rain/snow event over Christmas.
1/8/2010 8:15 AM 0.20 2.2 M 9.0 M A blanket of fresh, light and fluffy snow covers the area. Not as much snow here as they were calling for, but we did get a nice coating. Winds have continued to come from the NNE and now from the North. They are gradually returning back to the usual pattern so far this month which is from the NW. Temperatures are the coldest in a little while. 16 degrees at 8:15, and now 17 degrees. The barometer is rising from the low barometer reading of 29.85. It is currently at 30.10 inHg. The sky is 8 oktas and the clouds are a rare light blue color, but not as gloomy as in past days. A large chunk of snow in the gauge, weighing 513 grams and 9 inches of snow on the ground.
1/9/2010 8:15 AM T 0.0 M 9.0 M A few flakes in the gauge, but no new snow on the ground. The temperature is a cool 12 degrees with 11.9 degrees at 8:35. The sun is just peeking above the horizon and it looks like a clear day. A perfect blue sky, with the white snow so fluffy and sparkling bright.
1/10/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Clear skies again this morning. Some light stratus in the north west sky, and some other stratus clouds off to toward the south. We lost about a half an inch of snow due to compacting once again. Yesterday was clear and sunny for once and it looks like another sunny day. We have very lights winds coming from the south, with a temperature of 11 degrees.
1/11/2010 8:15 AM 0.05 1.2 M 9.5 M A nice coating of fresh and fluffy white snow fill the landscape at 8:15 this morning. The pine trees are covered with fresh snow now and don't look as gloomy as they did before, but happy to receive the nice coating. 18 degrees is the temperature and we have very light winds from the SSW. They have been mainly from the west to south. Yesterday the winds were really whipping. We had a top wind speed of 24 MPH from the WSW around 3:30 pm. These winds resulted in some blowing snow, but nothing major. The barometer has fallen over the last 12 hours but is now steady at 30.05 inHg (for the past five hours or so). A warming trend is on the way with temperatures possibly hitting the 40 degree mark later in the week. This will bring a slushy and sticky snow on the ground as well as some melting. This is certainly an interesting January. Usually we have really cold snaps, but a warm up is certainly a rare treat!
1/12/2010 8:15 AM 0.03 0.6 M 10.0 M A gloomy morning with the temperature steady at 19 degrees. I recorded the new snowfall and precipitation from the gauge at 1pm yesterday (0.6 inches of new snow and 0.03 inches of new precip. at that time). We just have a "trace" of new precip. and new snow this morning.
1/13/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.5 M A interesting partly cloudy sky this morning. The wispy cumulus clouds are pink in color and all pointed in the same direction, which is the same direction as the wind is blowing, south to north. It is very mild outside for January. 26 degrees and steady. We have SSW winds between 5 and 15 MPH. These winds from the south will bring us some unusually mild temperatures hovering around the freezing mark for the rest of this week and into the weekend.
1/14/2010 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.5 M 27 degrees and a warm south wind blowing in, propping our temperatures up this morning. The snow continues to get sticky and wet as these warm temperature continue. Some fog outside for the first time in quite a while. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 30s each day this week with some rain/snow possible into next week.
1/15/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 M No fog this morning, or mist. The temperature is really mild, and I mean mild, at 31 degrees. With 31 degrees at 8:15AM, temperatures could easily climb into the upper 30s today. The snow is now crusty and frozen and VERY STICKY. I stress the sticky part. Winds have transitioned from the South to North now and are very light this morning. Another mild day today and the forecast shows more mild weather. This is definitely the January Thaw that so many folks around here talk about. Total snow depth is falling every day. We lost 2 inches of snow from yesterday's total snow depth of 9.5 inches.
1/16/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 1.97 28 degrees, foggy, gloomy and a boring weather situation. The thaw is here!
1/17/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 M Another foggy morning with slightly lower temperatures hovering around the 25 degree mark. The sun finally came today during the afternoon hours. A low and very bright sun in the south west horizon. A hazy sun as well.
1/18/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 M Clouds skies with more fog. These foggy days are getting pretty common around here. 30 degrees is the mild temp. this morning. We have high humidity as well, 83%. The humidity has been high for January though with these warm temperatures we have been getting. 37 degrees was the high yesterday.
1/19/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 M There are light winds blowing from the NW at 4.3MPH and a cool temperature of 25 at 8:30 this morning. The sky is a dull gray with some light blue colored clouds off to the north. These warm temperatures have not really melted much of our snow over the last couple of days. We still have 7.0 inches (6.9 inches to be exact) on the ground. The below freezing temps. at night will not help the melting process.
1/20/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 M A brisk 16 degrees outside at 8:30 this morning. Clear skies this morning for the first time in a while. The sun is just peeking over the horizon in the west. We have light winds from the ENE at 1.9 MPH and 64% humidity. The barometer is high at 30.10 inHg and now steady after climbing all night. I wondered why the barometer was rising all night! It was because we were going to have a sunny day today. Temperatures are not going to get above the freezing mark and will stay in the lower 20s. Despite the rather warm spell we have been having the average high temperature has only been 28 degrees. It seems though that 28 degrees will not be the average high by the time January is over. More warm temperatures are on the way with some rain in the forecast as well. If we do get the rain (expected on Sunday) then this current snow we have on the ground should just melt away. The chance of flooding comes into the picture though if we get a substantial amount. Another interesting thing to add is the precipitation we have had, just 0.77 inches (melted precip. + 10 % snow). 4.4 inches of snow. We are below average in both those areas this January.
1/21/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 M A windy morning with light pink colored cumulus clouds. It is an overcast morning with temperatures in the lower 20s. We have had winds between the 10 - 15 MPH range and coming from the E/ENE. This is the ninth day in a row without any precipitation to report. Yesterday was cooler than what we have experienced over the last week. The high was 26 degrees. The sun gradually began to hide behind long lines of white and wispy stratus clouds. But there was more clearing in the evening after sunset, which really made the temperatures and wind chills drop.
1/22/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 M 26 degrees and brisk ENE winds at 14 MPH this morning. We have lost some of the snow from yesterday's total snow depth reading. 29 degrees was the high as well with some sun peeking through a mainly cloudy sky. This morning is overcast once again. The promise of new precipitation continues for the coming weekend.
1/23/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 M
1/24/2010 8:30 AM 0.13 0.0 0.00 6.0 M The first rain of the year! We have light rain falling and a very mild temperature of 37 degrees. There are fairly breezy winds from the East at 12 MPH. The barometer is very low hovering around the 29.55 inHg area. We have lost about 0.70 inches of total snow on the ground and counting. The electronic gauge reads 0.10 inches of new rain.
1/25/2010 8:15 AM 0.13 0.0 0.00 4.0 M A overcast morning with a small amount of snow on the ground. There are quite a few patches of grass around the property sticking through. 31 degrees is the temperature with light winds (for a change) from the SW at 2.3 MPH. My electronic gauge really received a TON of new rainfall, 1.26 inches to be exact, which is way over the actual level of 0.13 inches from the CoCoRaHS gauge. Some of the rain in the gauge did freeze and ice was around the outer portion of the gauge as well. The big puddles of water that were here yesterday are gone as well do to freezing. The January Thaw is over I do believe. Colder temperatures with more new snow are in the forecast over the next couple of days. A chance of new snow every day with temperatures in the lower 20s mainly. It is important to be optimistic during these changes because Spring (sometimes we have no Spring in Michigan so I don't know what I am talking about) is just around the corner!
1/26/2010 8:15 AM 0.05 0.7 M 5.0 M 28 degrees and a fresh coating of new snow on the ice covered ground bright and early this morning. My total snow depth reading I believe could be a hair off at 5 inches. The ground is so frozen beneath the scant coating of fresh snow that it makes it very hard to punch the ruler down into it to get a reading. Winds have shifted to coming from the south now and are light this morning. This January has been an unusually windy month with an average high wind of around 15 MPH. This light coating of new snow is not much but enough to cover up the icy mess underneath. The light snow falling yesterday late in the afternoon hours was a nice change of pace compared to the wet and soggy mess we had a couple of days ago.
1/27/2010 8:15 AM 0.03 0.7 M 5.5 M Some more fresh light snow this morning. The clouds are pink in color with the rising sun just peeking over the horizon. There was some heavy snow swirling around in the sky at 8:15. A very picturesque scene with blue skies high above. Wind chills must be really low even though the winds are light at 4.9 MPH from the WSW. 14 degrees is the temperature. We have not felt this kind of temperature in quite a while. Winter is slowly returning. Highs for the rest of the week will be in the lower 20s and even upper teens. The snow today was a little more fluffy and light than yesterday's snow. I can tell by the weight of the snow yesterday (482 grams, 0.05 inches of precip.) and the weight of the snow this morning (478 grams, 0.03 inches of precip.). A very interesting switch. Same amount of NEW snow today as yesterday though, 0.7 inches. With these winds and the light coating of snow on the ground, blowing snow can not be ruled out.
1/28/2010 8:15 AM 0.08 0.7 M 5.5 M Considerable blowing and drifting snow last night and this morning. My snow observation platforms ranged from a new snow accumulation reading of 1.5 inches down to 0.3 inches. Snow has been falling for most of the morning. We did have a break in the action when the sun came up from it's sleep around 8:30 or so. Faint clouds all around us with the same type of pink cumulus off toward the rising sun in the SE sky. Winds have been whipping. A 12 MPH wind right now and 7 degrees. This means the wind chill readings are well below the 0 degree mark and in the negative digits. -12 below wind chill as of 8:51 AM just a couple of seconds ago. Drifts in the area range from a trace up to 5 inches or so. This is not entirely accurate. I am just judging by areas around the car and shed. A cold day in the forecast with temperatures in the teens. Wind chills will be consistently in the sub-freezing zone to the single digits with these brisk winds from the WSW (right on WSW too, my weather station shows no other signs of wind coming from ANY OTHER DIRECTION).
1/29/2010 8:15 AM 0.02 0.2 M 4.5 M 10 degrees, no wind, and a loss in total snow depth this morning. We did have some blowing snow and winds yesterday for quite some time, which resulted in a loss of new snow depth due to drifting. I realized yesterday afternoon that my weather vain on the wind sensor was frozen, which is the reason why the wind consistently blew from the WSW. That has happened almost every January because of melting/freezing periods and other periods of really cold temperatures. It is not frozen now though and the wind is coming from the west (very light 0.3 MPH). A high of 16 degrees today is expected with scattered snow. Not as high of winds though and at least the blowing and white out conditions are over with for now.
1/30/2010 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.0 M A bright full moon in the western sky. The brightest of the year. There are shadows everywhere and you don't even need binoculars to see detail on the moon's surface. It is very cold, due to a mainly clear sky with some stratus that can be made out due to how bright the moon is. -5 degrees is the temperature.
1/31/2010 8:15 AM T 0.3 M 5.0 M A trace of actual precipitation this morning, but 0.3 inches of new snow. It is very light and fluffy. Clouds this morning are pretty. There are numerous altocumulus off toward the rising sun. Clear skies hovering above us with clouds in each horizon. Some stratus as well in the mix. A much warmer morning, 17 degrees on the weather deck and a new wind of 4 MPH coming from the west.
2/1/2010 8:15 AM T T M 4.5 M A trace of both new precipitation and snow this morning. There are only a few flakes in the gauge as well as on my observation platforms. A very cool 6 degrees outside, with the sun just peeking over the horizon. It keeps getting up later and later each day. We have some very pretty and UFO shaped stratus clouds off toward the east with some other pink colored stratus hovering around. These last few days have been a mix of sun and clouds, which is very interesting, considering that we usually have many cloudy, gloomy days during the winter. I think we will have another mixed cloud day with the sun trying to win over the other odd shapes and formations in the sky throughout the day. Hopefully the sun wins out! Happy February! We are getting closer and closer to warmer weather. Lets hope February is not tooooo exiting!
2/2/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 0.3 M 5.0 M Just a little bit of new precipitation in the gauge, but some actual snow accumulation on this Groundhog Day. 17 degrees is the temperature and we have light breezes (4.2 MPH from the NE). A cloudy overcast morning with no sign of the sun. My predictions for yesterday's sun forecast, were well off the mark. We had overcast skies throughout the whole day. Typical Michigan weather.
2/3/2010 8:15 AM 0.05 0.9 M 6.0 M Big flakes falling at the observation time this morning. It is 19.8 degrees with a very calm wind (as calm as you can get at 0.0 mph). We have received just about an inch of new snow and it continues to fall. 1.2 inches so far for February. It is a very light snow, which is great for cross country skiing and other outdoor activities. The only problem is that we only have about 2-3 inches of light snow on top of the frozen ice hovering close to the surface just under the light top layer. I think we will get some more of this nice snow this morning. The way it is coming down right now (fairly heavy) is a sign of some new accumulation. A warming trend appears to be on its way though and with it some possible melting. Highs in the lower 30s and around or just above the freezing mark into the weekend.
2/4/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 0.3 M 6.0 M 4 degrees outside this morning. Nothing compared to the -6 below reading in January. A heavy frost covers all bare surfaces this morning including the rain gauge. The new precipitation (0.01 in.) and new snow accumulation were both recorded yesterday around 12:10 PM in the afternoon. I am glad that I did record this info because the sun came out gradual throughout the afternoon, which gave way to some melting. By sunset it was clear outside. These clear skies gave way to such cold temperature we have this morning. A low last night of 2 degrees. Pink clouds again this morning with wispy stratus hanging around. Not as clear as last night but it looks like the sun will attempt an appearance this morning. A mix of clouds and sun is in the forecast with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark. Please look at FL-HB-67 reports every morning at 8:15. This is MI-ME-3's station in Tampa, Florida.
2/5/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M No new precipitation to report this morning. It is overcast with altocumulus clouds hovering high above. A line of darker clouds moving in from the north. 21 degrees is the mild temperature.
2/6/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.5 M The snow is melting slightly every day. With temperatures close to freezing this is not unusual. 14 degrees this morning, and clear skies. A bright sun. It looks like it is going to be a sunny day!
2/7/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.5 M A beautiful sunny morning. 1 degree at the observation time. Very cold. We have light vanilla colored stratus clouds with some DNA Shaped clouds as well. Very interesting formations. Yesterday was clear and not many clouds in the sky. Wispy lines of stratus that appeared to be contrails at first were not. I like to call them spaghetti stratus, because they kind of looked like spaghetti in the sky.
2/8/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 1.68 7 degrees and the sun is trying to peek through the thick layer of clouds this morning. We have gray cumulus hovering about with no sign of any wind. The barometer has not fallen yet (30.25 inHg) in anticipation of the winter storm, but it will later on in the day. 6 to 12 inches of snow is possible Tuesday into Wednesday. Along with this heavy snow we will have some gusty winds. This means that the snow will be blowing around. At least the temperatures will not be too cold. Looks like they will be in the mid-20s. This is a kind of storm to get exited about. I am looking forward to seeing how much of the white stuff we receive and others around Michigan receive.
2/9/2010 8:15 AM T 0.1 M 6.0 M The winter storm is officially here. We have only a tenth of an inch of new snow as of 8:15. The snow started around 7:30 this morning, so that would explain why we have light accumulations. The snow is coming down quite hard and steady. A light snow is occurring due to the cool temperatures (20 degrees). We have light winds coming from the NE at 0.2 MPH. It looks like we will not get as much snow as they were originally forecasting, but we should get a good 5 inches at least. The winds should pick up later in the day. We are expecting some blowing snow and gusty winds. Typical February weather in Michigan!
2/10/2010 8:15 AM 0.21 2.9 0.47 9.0 1.64 19 degrees and a light breeze from the north on this snowy winters morning. We have lots of fresh new light and fluffy snow to report this morning. Considerable drifting and blowing snow last night, but so far this morning the blowing and drifting has subsided. Even the sun is popping out as I write these observation notes this morning. We have light blue clouds, which is a sign of clearing today. It is certainly nice to see the faint glow of the sun. The snow is so smooth. It paints a wonderful picture on the whole landscape, especially this morning. I was really busy this morning. I collected the New snowfall core and Total snow core along with everything else we report. Not as much snow as I thought we were going to receive, but it looks from a distance like quite a bit. We now have 27.9 inches of snow so far this winter (from Oct. 1, 2009 to present), still below average, but nature is trying to make up the deficit.
2/11/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 0.2 M 9.0 2.30 22 degrees this morning with an overcast sky. There is a orange glow off toward the rising sun, with blue colored cumulus clouds all around. The winds have subsided. Yesterday we had widespread blowing snow and some gusty winds. The winds picked up later in the afternoon and night. Some scattered snow showers yesterday afternoon. Accumulations are light this morning. I am thinking that these light accumulations came from last night, because my snow platforms did not have that much snow on them yesterday evening. The barometer has risen to 30.05 inHg and is now steady after climbing slowly all night. A sign of some drier weather ahead.
2/12/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M 24 degrees with an overcast sky this morning. A slight change in total snow depth, 8.80 inches to 8.6 inches. Temperatures last night did not get as cold as they were expecting. Are low is actually the current temperature, 24 degrees. With the temperature so mild right now, we should have a fairly mild February day. Hopefully it will not get too warm today.
2/13/2010 9:00 AM 0.01 1.2 M 9.5 1.45 We have fresh new snow this morning! Light and fluffy. Perfect for cross-country skiing. Just what we needed. The temperature is 23 degrees and there is no wind outside to blow this fresh snow around. This was obviously lake effect snow. I was looking at the radar last night and could see a big band of snow heading directly in a north to south direction. We now have 9.5 inches of snow on the ground. One of my measurements for total snow depth read 270 millimeters. Which is just about 10.5 inches. Temperatures yesterday really rose into the lower thirties, hitting the 32 degree mark. It was sunny as well for most of the day with fall like gray stratocumulus clouds and other stratus hovering around. Clear skies for most of the night until the snow came in early in the morning hours. Snow this morning ended around 8 AM. I have noticed though we had some stray snow showers which were very isolated (I mean like 200 feet away snow was not falling). If it was that isolated though it could have fallen from the snow covered trees. I kind of doubt that because the wind is very calm. A strange weather phenomenon!
2/14/2010 9:00 AM T T M 8.5 M A trace of both new snow and precipitation this morning. Temperatures are quite mild at 25 degrees. We have fairly sticky snow now with high humidity readings. I wonder if the sticky snow is caused by the high humidity we have had. Are total snow depth has also gone down.
2/15/2010 9:00 AM T 0.1 M 8.5 M Another trace of new precipitation but we do have some new snow this morning. Mild temperatures once again. Currently at 26 degrees. A stratocumulus morning with these types of clouds in the sky. The sun is making some appearance, but it is not winning over the clouds approval.
2/16/2010 8:15 AM 0.07 1.3 M 9.5 M We have new snow and new precipitation this snowy morning! Heavy, fairly wet snow falling very steady this morning. 25 degrees is the temperature with no wind and a low barometer reading at 29.70 inHg (very steady too). Some light snow yesterday, but the snow began to pick up last night around 9 and 10PM.
2/17/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 0.5 M 9.5 M 28 degrees this morning with gray cumulus. A very pretty blue sky as well in the background. 0.3 inches of snow and 0.01 inches of precipitation recorded at 1PM on yesterday. Only 0.20 inches of snow with a TRACE of precipitation this morning. The sun is just peeking right now, a very pretty sky.
2/18/2010 8:15 AM T T M 9.0 M 27 degrees and an icy covering of snow outside this morning. The sun is peeking through every once and a while. Gray to black cumulus clouds mainly with some white stratus high above. A warm afternoon so far with temperatures in the mid-30s. Above average by only a few degrees.
2/19/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M A very cold 15 degrees this morning. Clear skies, with a bright sun out. A very mild day yesterday reaching 35 degrees for the second day in a row.
2/20/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Another cold morning. 14 degrees with bright sunshine outside. We have some clouds though. A thick long stratus cloud off toward the NE, with other stratus and cirrus formations in other directions as well. 63 percent humidity is the humidity reading this morning. We have had some high humidity reading. Our average high humidity for February has been a couple percent higher than January's. The melting process has continued over the last couple of days, except this morning we still have 8.5 inches (8.3 inches to be exact) of snow on the ground. The same as yesterday. Looks like this mild weather will not stay here for long as temperatures over the next couple of days will drop down into the upper 20s for highs. The chance of snow every day will be coming into the picture once again. We have been lucky to have so many sunny days this month. A clear day yesterday with not a cloud in the sky, just a deep blue sky with the bright sun shining.
2/21/2010 8:30 AM T T M 8.5 M A gloomy morning. 31 degrees and the signs of a winter storm are visible!
2/22/2010 8:15 AM 0.06 1.0 0.12 8.5 2.27 26 degrees with a breezy wind coming from the NE between 5 and 10MPH. The wind is not that strong, but enough to blow the new snow around. It is not a very wet snow or light snow. Heavy snow falling at the observation time this morning. 3 inches of new snow is in the forecast for the rest of today. 8.80 inches of snow so far this February. That number is up from only 7 inches in January. Only 32 inches of snow this winter. Well below average.
2/23/2010 9:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 9.0 M A bright sunny morning with 27 degrees. The snow is fairly light this morning due to the drop in the temperatures last night. It was very sticky yesterday afternoon mainly because we had a high temperature of 34 degrees. The sixth day in a row we have had a high temperature above the freezing mark. The precipitation reading (0.01 inches) and the new snowfall reading (0.2 inches), were both recorded at 1PM yesterday (Feb. 22). I did this because we lost quite a bit of snow in the afternoon due to the warm temperatures.
2/24/2010 10:00 AM 0.04 0.8 0.08 9.5 2.24 29 degrees with heavy snow falling. Almost an inch of new snow this morning.
2/25/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 T T 9.5 2.92 A very cold 17 degrees with a light frigid cold wind blowing every once and a while. A trace of new snow this morning from the light snow falling. We had snow for much of the morning and afternoon yesterday, but it melted as it touched the ground. This lead to no new snow accumulation to speak of. One unique event which has occurred quite a bit in February has been the constant melting (due to warm daytime temperatures above the freezing mark) and freezing process (due to cold temperatures at night). We have miniature ice rinks outside because of the cold temperatures last night and this morning. Are average high is only 30 degrees though partly because temperatures have not been above the freezing mark until only about a week ago or so. The average low temperature for February is 15 degrees.
2/26/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.0 M A windy morning and afternoon. Blowing snow and light snow falling this afternoon. We have winds up to 20 MPH. Temperatures are in the upper 20s. 9 inches of snow on the ground.
2/27/2010 8:40 AM 0.06 0.7 0.08 10.0 3.12 27 degrees this morning. We have a nice light coating of new snow on the ground from yesterday's numerous snow showers throughout the evening hours. The snow did wrap up around 10 PM or so though. The winds are not as bad this morning and it is warming up quick with 29 degrees as of 9:30. 10 inches of snow now on the ground now.
2/28/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.0 M 34 degrees. Very mild! The snow is definitely sticky. Spring is in the air! Temperatures into the coming week appear to be in the mid-30s and sunny weather as well.
3/1/2010 8:30 AM T T T 8.0 M A trace of both new precipitation and snow this morning. I think it might be just frost on the ground, but there are actual flakes on the back observation platform and in the gauge. Another mild morning. 31 degrees is the temperature. Bright sunshine this morning should really warm things up. Looks like a nice start to March!
3/2/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 8.0 M A very heavy frost on the ground and around the rain gauge this morning. Temperatures are the coldest in quite a while. We had a low temperature last night of 16 degrees. The coldest temperature recorded since February 20th. It is warming up quickly from 21 degrees at 8:15 to 22 degrees as of now. Another bright sunny morning. Not a cloud in the sky. A high temperature yesterday of 39 degrees. March is looking like a fairly mild month. Lets hope we don't get any more snow and we actually have a real Spring this year.
3/3/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.5 M 22 degrees and sunny this morning. Another heavy frost with icy snow covering the ground. Only 7.5 inches of snow on the ground and melting every day. High temperature yesterday of 39 degrees for the second day in a row. Temperatures look to be in the 40s by the weekend!
3/4/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.5 M Another frosty morning. 20 degrees and sunshine. This weather is almost unheard of in Michigan. No precipitation of any kind for the third straight day in a row! This sunshine is getting pretty boring!
3/5/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 3.20 A beautiful morning. Not a cloud in the sky and once again frost covering the ground and the gauge. 23 degrees is the temperature with a low last night of 13 degrees recorded around 7:15 AM. Our average high so far for March is at 40 degrees. Only 2 degrees below the overall average high. We have yet to receive any precipitation, which we are in need of. Only 34 inches of snow this winter. We should be around the 50 inch mark by now or higher. A definite change from last years 90 inch snow mark total for the winter. I took a total core snow sample and found that the snow pack consists of a fairly thin sheet of ice on top with ice granules hovering close below the top layer. We have a constant freezing and thawing going on, resulting in the top layer of snow melting during the daytime and freezing solid at night.
3/6/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 M A very mild afternoon. Temperatures are definitely reaching the 40 degree mark which is right around average for this time of year. The snow continues to melt and is currently at the 6.5 inch mark. Our temperatures at night have been getting into the teens, which is below average for March.
3/7/2010 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 5.0 M The snow is getting very icy when these temperatures drop well below the freezing point. I have a very hard time reaching the surface with my wooden ruler to measure the total snow depth. There is a very thick layer of pure ice on the bottom which is very hard to break through. It is going to take a number of warm days and mild nights to melt the snow that is left. We have lost quite a bit of snow over the last week, so it is melting. A high temperature of 47 degrees yesterday. Looks like we are going to have a Spring this year!
3/8/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 4.5 3.79 A slight trace of haze this morning, maybe fog. Bright sunshine once again with some light clouds hovering. Mainly sunny though. The temperature is quite mild at 34 degrees. Temperatures climbed up to the 50 degree mark here yesterday. They are calling for that to happen once again today and tomorrow. We do have a chance of rain showers tomorrow night and into Wednesday. We need the rain! A sign of warmer weather was the Canadian Geese flying north as I was measuring the total snow depth!
3/9/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.5 1.67 33 degrees with hazy skies greet us this morning. We have some light patchy fog hovering around as well. Another sunny day! Not for long though, as rain is expected tonight and tomorrow. This rain coming will definitely get rid of the small portion of snow we have left on the ground. A big loss in total snow depth and total snow core. Yesterday temperatures reached the upper 50s prompting this big time snow melt! We should hit the 50 degree mark again today, still above average temperatures for early March.
3/10/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 1.5 0.90 A balmy 40 degrees at 8:15. The sun is trying to break through, but we have a mainly clouds sky for the first time in March. The snow depth continues to melt with less than 50 % covering the surface. Looks like only a 50 % chance of rain today. We may get some showers.
3/11/2010 8:15 AM 0.24 0.0 0.00 1.0 0.50 39 degrees with a light mist falling. We have foggy weather as well. Visibilities are down to about a mile or less in this location. The snow cover on the ground is down to about 30% in most locations. My remaining snow measuring pile outside is only about 0.90 inches deep and melting fast. By the end of the day and tonight it should be gone. Most of it should be gone at least. My other two other total snow depth measuring locations either have a TRACE of snow or none at all covering them. The weather over the last 24 hours has been overcast with light drizzle yesterday with some heavier showers later in the day. We had quite the downpour last night around 8:25 PM or so. This cell was moving fast but quite powerful. The heavy showers only lasted about 5 minutes, but enough to give us some substantial rainfall for the area. It really reminded me of one of those showers one might experience down in Florida. This brief shower reminded us that Summer is not that far down the road.
3/12/2010 8:15 AM 1.23 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A very wet morning after moderate and heavy showers yesterday and evening and last night. The rain started around 4:45 Pm and lasted into the morning hours of today. A very heavy shower started off the rain from 4:45 PM to around 4:50. Only 5 minutes but enough to give us a little rainfall for the meantime. We had some more heavy showers and moderate showers throughout the night giving us over an inch of new rain. The rain was needed but we are still below the mark for March. I think we will almost reach the 3 inch mark this month. It's a possibility. 42 degrees at 8:15. The warmest temperature all year and in a LONG time for this time of day. Humidity levels are high (95%) considering all the fog and mist outside. Visibilities are very low as well. Winds are either from the ENE or from the NE at 6 MPH. The electronic gauge reads 1.27 inches of rainfall over the last 24 hours. The snow has officially disappeared, even the big snow piles have melted some. One last note is the average snow depth we had this winter. By adding all the depths of snow we had each day and dividing by the number of days we had snow on the ground, I found out the average which is 5.9 inches. Almost 6 inches on the ground for this winter.
3/13/2010 8:15 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A very windy morning. A 22 MPH wind speed from the ENE at 8:15 with other wind speeds reaching the 15 MPH mark. 44 degrees with 88% humidity. My electronic gauge reads 0.01 inches of new rain. Not that far off from the CoCoRaHS gauge. I put the inner tube and funnel outside, because the temperatures have been so mild. Rain is in the forecast today, but so far only light sprinkles. The foggy/misty weather we had yesterday has dissipated. A light fog outside, but it is hard to tell if it is fog or light rain.
3/14/2010 7:15 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 38 degrees on this damp morning. It is fairly dark outside, but light is coming through. An overcast sky, with big cumulus all around. The winds have subsided compared to last evening's winds up to 30 MPH. I hope everyone out there makes a smooth switch ahead in time. Only a trace of new rain from the light showers we had yesterday. A chance of rain today, but we can look forward to a SUNNY week ahead!
3/15/2010 8:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 42 degrees and no rain to report this morning. An overcast morning with stratocumulus clouds lined up in long rows in the sky. A sunny day is in the forecast, so maybe these clouds will gradually disappear throughout the day. Light showers yesterday, but not enough to accumulate.
3/16/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 What a chilly morning! 25 degrees to be exact and clear skies. A heavy frost on the gauge and covering the ground. The sun has just risen over the horizon, and is steadily climbing up into the sky. We have light cirrus clouds and some contrails, but skies are mainly clear, giving us these super cold temperatures. Highs today are expected to edge into the upper 50s. We have a long way to get there from the mid-20s, but I think it is going to warm up real quick, once the sun rises to the 45 degree level. We are still above average for the average high temperature readings this month. Our overall average high for March is 42 degrees. We are at the 47 degree reading so far. Yesterday we almost hit 60 degrees. A high of 59.
3/17/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 31 degrees and bright sunshine this morning. Some more frost on the ground, because of the cold temperatures. Record highs yesterday reaching 66 degrees here in Big Rapids.
3/18/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A partly sunny morning. We have stratus and cirrus clouds hanging around. The sun is trying to break through the light layer of clouds. 33 degrees. The first morning in two days above the freezing mark. Yesterday was another warm day with another high temperature of 66 degrees. Not a record high, but pretty impressive for this time of year. Looks like the warm and sunny weather will go away by the weekend with rain/snow coming in. We always get snow in March. This year is no exception.
3/19/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 40 degrees at the observation time this morning. A cloudy morning unlike past mornings. Stratus and cumulus clouds mainly. Winds are light and variable compared to the breezy winds we had yesterday (max. wind of 22 MPH from the West). The forecast has changed to rain/snow likely tonight and tomorrow, with just cloudy skies on Sunday. The snow should not accumulate to much and might just melt on impact.
3/20/2010 8:15 AM 0.04 0.4 M 1.0 M The snow has arrived, and in full force! 29 degrees and light snow falling. About an inch on the ground. I have to keep this short, because we are going down to Detroit this weekend. MI-ME-3 will keep the records while I am gone. Hopefully we will not get too much precipitation.
3/22/2010 5:00 PM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Precipitation from Electronic Gauge. All precipitation from manual rain gauge has melted, due to such mild temperatures. Nice and sunny here in Big Rapids compared to down in Detroit. Good to be back!

3/24/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A very cool morning. 26 degrees and sunny. Yesterday we had a high temperature of 58 degrees.
3/25/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A fairly mild morning. 37 degrees. The wind has really picked up this afternoon. Temperatures are in the upper 30s still. The winds (5-15 MPH) have brought pretty chilly wind chill readings. A sunny day though! Average high temperature for March has been 50 degrees. That's 9 degrees above the overall average for March! 6 days of 60 degree weather.
3/26/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A very cold morning for this time of year. 17 degrees, but no frost around the rain gauge. The ground has virtually no frost on it as well. The sun is very bright this morning. My only guess to why the lack of frost this morning, is the sun melting it off. Yesterday was very cool compared to the weather we have had this March. A high of only 39 degrees, which is closer to the average high temperature that we are supposed to be having for March.
3/27/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 29 degrees and overcast. A light 2.6 MPH wind from the south blowing. No precipitation. A chance of rain for tomorrow, but it seems like the dry weather will continue into next week. We are below average for rain this year so far.
3/28/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A hazy sun and 32 degrees. A warm up is in the forecast late next week. Temperatures should reach the 70s, which would well be above the average highs for this time of year. Record highs could be a possibility. No rain in the forecast.
3/29/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 No precipitation to report for the 8th straight day and no rain in sight. Hopefully April will bring us more rain!
3/30/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00
3/31/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 One of the mildest mornings we have had in over a week. 45 degrees is the temperature. A sign that we are headed for a warm day with temperatures in the 70s. The sun is peeking through a dense layer of what could be altostratus/stratus. Yesterday we had our eighth day of 60 degree weather this month. Looks like a chance of rain on Saturday night. We need the rain. No fire danger warning has popped up, but this dry weather we can not forget about. These dry conditions are not helpful.
4/1/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 46 degrees and a hazy sky. Another warm day is in the forecast. 80% humidity make it quite humid out there. A record high yesterday here in Big Rapids, topping 77 degrees, one degree above the old record of 76 degrees set in 1986. More record highs could be coming with temperatures getting into the 80s possibly today and tomorrow. A breezy day yesterday. We had a top wind of 21 MPH.
4/2/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00
4/3/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Rain is on its way! A sunny morning. 47 degrees and quite humid (70%). Another record high yesterday of 82 degrees. The same high temperature as Thursday. Much cooler temperatures this weekend and into next week.
4/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.28 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 37 degrees and bright sunshine on this wonderful Easter morning! He has risen! We finally received some rain, thanks to God! And it looks like more rain is on the way into next week with some summer-like thunderstorms.
4/5/2010 9:00 AM 0.17 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 50 degrees with 88 percent humidity. We have puffy cumulus clouds. 0.21 inches of rain recorded in my electronic gauge. Only 0.04 inches more than in the CoCoRaHS. A huge wind speed recorded last night at 32 MPH around 9:50 PM. That is our fastest wind speed recorded so far this year. Everything is green this morning. Well...almost everything. It absolutely amazes at how good 0.45 inches of rain (total rainfall from today and yesterday) can do to the West Michigan landscape. The drought is over! More rain is on the way too for tonight with the chance of thunderstorms. Good old spring time weather!
4/6/2010 8:30 AM 0.38 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 47 degrees and 89 percent humidity on this damp and wet morning. An overcast sky and very gloomy. This is the kind of weather we have not see in West Michigan in quite a while. Electronic gauge reads 0.42 inches of new rainfall.
4/7/2010 8:15 AM 0.31 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A very wet morning from all the rain we have received. 47 degrees. We did not get much rain last night though and they have really changed the forecast. Looks like we will get a mix of both rain/snow tonight, with all snow tomorrow. About an inch is expected. I thought we might get some snow in April and it seems like we will. A break in the action after the 8:30 observation time yesterday, lasted only until 9:17 AM when another wave came through. Light to moderate rain during that event, which lasted until 11:50 AM. Around 3 PM or so the weather changed. A light mist began to fall and fog began to form along the surface of the ground. This continued into the evening with another break starting around 6:30. A mainly overcast night. I think we might have had some showers come through, but nothing to write home about. Everything on the ground is very green now. West Michigan looks like Ireland!
4/8/2010 8:15 AM 0.34 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 What appeared to be a mix of rain and snow was only just rain. This was the conclusion I came up with after I was outside for a couple of minutes. 40 degrees right now and high humidity (now at 95%). The electronic gauge has 0.39 inches of rain in it. Not that far off from the CoCoRaHS gauge. We have no snow on the ground, which is very good. I took in both the inner tube and funnel last night just in case the snow might accumulate. I am glad I did that, because if I hadn't brought those pieces of equipment in, it probably would have snowed. The rain has not stopped in quite a while. Light to moderate showers yesterday with foggy weather throughout the day. This morning there is not much fog outside. The wind is light (0-5MPH) from the east now, as opposed to coming from the north yesterday. Temperatures appear to be dropping below freezing point tonight and tomorrow. It looks like a warm up is coming though, with temperatures in the 60s this weekend and next week.
4/9/2010 8:15 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A "trace" of snow in the gauge this morning. I emptied the gauge around 4PM yesterday and it had 0.02 inches in it, so we did not receive much more precipitation after 4 o'clock. Some areas outside have some snow flakes covering them. Not enough for me to report a "trace" of snow on the ground though. Most of the ground is bare. I measured the gauge this morning after melting the snow out of it (this is without the funnel and inner tube). What I found surprised me. The weight of the gauge has gone down 2 grams. It weighs 470 grams instead of 472 grams the last time I weighed it. I don't exactly know what is going in. The cold weather could be a factor or else my scale is off, which I kind of doubt. A cooler day today in the forecast with temperatures in the 40s. We had a high of 44 yesterday, which is actually right around average for April. Occasional snow showers in the afternoon yesterday. The wind was really blowing the snow around. Very isolated snow showers too, with bright sunshine emerging after each one. What amazes me this month is the top wind speeds we have been receiving from the anemometer on top of the roof of the house. A top wind speed of 32.8MPH and an average top wind speed of......get this, 22.9MPH. I can't recall an average wind speed reading coming out at 22 MPH for one month. April has just started though, and that number could go down as we get closer to May.
4/10/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A beautiful sky this morning. Red cumulus clouds in the eastern horizon with a break in the cumulus clouds off to the north east. A very pretty scene. 33 degrees is the temperature with no frost this morning. That is a good sign for local farmers. For the first time in 6 days, we have no new precipitation to report.
4/11/2010 8:15 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A "trace" of new rain in the gauge this morning. Only a few drops, but enough to give the report a "T" this morning. We have some sunshine going on, with stratus clouds hovering around. 35 degrees and no frost. Another windy day yesterday with a top wind of 31MPH. We now have an average top wind speed of 23MPH for the month. A high temperature yesterday of 66 degrees yesterday as well, about 15 degrees above average. 60 degree weather is expected to continue today and next week. Some isolated showers yesterday as well, giving us the rain report this morning.
4/12/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 34 degrees and SUNNY!
4/13/2010 8:15 AM 0.14 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A light drizzle falling at 8:15 this morning. 43 degrees with 88 % humidity and the pressure is very high at 30.50 inHg and rising slowly over the last couple of hours. An 8.1 MPH wind from the ESE coming in as well. The winds have been coming in from the east all night and yesterday as well. My electronic gauge has the same amount of rain in it as the CoCoRaHS gauge, 0.14 inches. Some very interesting data from the NOAA office in Grand Rapids revealed that we had the warmest start to April (April 1-12), we have had since they started collecting data in 1892. WOW! Here in Big Rapids are average high so far this April is 63 degrees. Winds are still fairly breezy this month.
4/14/2010 8:15 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A "trace" of rain this morning. Only one drop of rain in the gauge on this clear blue sky morning. Bright sun is shining and the temperature is 45 degrees. Wind are at 4MPH from the ESE (they continue to come from the east). A much milder morning then yesterday morning, which may be a sign of temperatures reaching into the 70s today. Some 70 degree weather for tomorrow as well. Rain stopped yesterday shortly after the observation report. We had a light shower come through around 7:30 PM. Very light and localized rain, which did not last long at all.
4/15/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A balmy April morning! 55 degrees is the temperature and fairly humid, 66 percent. We have some haze hanging around, but a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. Looks like rain tonight but clear weather today. We have another Red Flag Warning due to this warm spell and fairly dry weather. Yesterday we hit 73 degrees here. Not a record high but very warm for April. Temperatures today should edge close to 80 degrees.
4/16/2010 8:15 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A big old beetle in the gauge this morning floating right on top of the 0.04 inches of new rain. 55 degrees and sunny after some late night showers last night. A high of 83 degrees yesterday. This is the highest temperature recorded so far this year.
4/17/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 39 degrees and bright sunshine. Wonderful dark cumulus clouds hovering around. Still breezy, with winds up to 25 MPH. A top wind yesterday of only 23 MPH though.
4/18/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00
4/19/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A very frosty morning. The gauge is coated with heavy frost, but was easy to wipe off, after I pressed my finger on the side of the gauge. The sun is so bright that the frost should melt off real quick this morning on all surfaces. 32 degrees is already the temperature and it is rising quickly (35F at 8:37 now). We had a low of 28 degrees here, the same as yesterday. A high of 52 degrees yesterday, which is slightly below average for this part of April. It appears that the daytime highs will get back into the 60s, which is still above average, but more of what we are used to this spring. Only 1.68 inches of rain for April. Below average for the month. We are supposed to receive right around 2.95 inches for the whole month of April. Chances are we will not hit that mark, but some more rain would be welcomed around West Michigan. The only month this year above average in precipitation was February. We are below average in rainfall for the whole year so far. When you receive total precipitation counts of under two inches for each month, you know that your below the average (in West Michigan).
4/20/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00
4/21/2010 8:22 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Popcorn cumulus clouds this morning. 37 degrees and some dew on the ground and gauge. This dry spell we are currently having should end by Friday, with a rain spell settling into the area.
4/22/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Not as cold a night as they were forecasting. We had a low of only 30 degrees, with some light dew on the ground. The sun really melted off the frost this morning and everything is drying up real quick. 36 degrees at 8:15 with bright sunshine once again. Pure white contrails fill the sky this morning.
4/23/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another bright sunny morning. Not much frost on the ground because the temperature is 36 degrees. A warm day is in the forecast with temperatures in the mid-60s. Rain is still in the forecast for tonight and into the weekend.
4/24/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 49 degrees and light drizzle falling. No rain in the gauge yet. I am told by my Dad that the drizzle started around 8:45 this morning. Amazing storms to the south of us in the Tennessee and Mississippi areas. They still have tornado warnings and watches, just like last night, when I checked the NOAA watches and warnings page. Really something. It is Spring though, and this is not unusual for them, but what a system of severe storms. Heavier showers off toward the lake, so I don't think we will get that much. Quite a bit of the rain on the radar is not reaching the ground. A better chance of rain tonight and tomorrow.
4/25/2010 8:15 AM 0.96 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Heavy rain falling and very breezy this morning. 47 degrees with 93 percent humidity. A 21 MPH wind speed recorded at the observation time. 0.13 inches of rain by noon yesterday, with a break during the afternoon. Only light drizzle during the afternoon every once and a while. The rain from this huge system started around 11:15 last night. 1.04 inches of rain in the electronic gauge. The much needed rain is here!
4/26/2010 8:25 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 48 degrees and very windy this morning. The windy day yesterday has continued into today. A 17 MPH wind gust at the observation time. The scant 0.03 inches of rain fell during the morning hours yesterday, finishing around the noon hour. A beautiful morning. Bright sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. Looks like a warm up is on the way. Temperatures may be in the 70s by late this week. With those temperatures we may see and hear are first thunderstorms of the year.
4/27/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 37 degrees and another sunny morning. Some light breezes out there (8.7 MPH from the NE). A low of 34 degrees last night. Not a cloud in the sky. The moon last night was wonderfully bright. It is almost full.
4/28/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 33 degrees and frost covering some shaded ares this morning. The sun has melted off most of the frost that was on the ground this morning. A low last night of 28 degrees. We have 75% humidity and the barometer is rising at 30.00 inHg. Abundant sunshine yesterday and it looks like today will be much the same. A high yesterday of 58. Highs should be in the upper 50s again today and maybe hit 60.
4/29/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A mild morning. 40 degrees with quite a few clouds hanging around. Some sun is peeking through, but not like past mornings we have had this week. Thunderstorms are coming into the area for the first time this year it appears. A slight chance of them tomorrow, but they are likely Friday night and Saturday. Temperatures tomorrow should get into the upper 70s.
4/30/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 57 degrees at the observation time. Very mild! It is already in the upper 70s now and fairly windy. A high wind yesterday of 26 MPH. The wind has been coming from the east, both yesterday and today. A chance of thunderstorms tonight.
5/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.16 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A muggy morning with 86 % humidity. 65 degrees and Florida-like weather outside. Some light drizzle falling, but it has stopped as of a minute or two ago. 0.20 inches in the electronic gauge. Took readings from three different locations around the property and the CoCoRaHS gauge collected the most (other sites were 0.10 inches and 0.15 inches). I averaged the three sites to come out with 0.14 inches (rounded). Rain started last night real heavy with some thunder and lightning around 11:40 PM. Some heavy showers with brief breaks every once and a while. Lightning came in bursts with flashes of light coming from the NW mainly. Even though we did not receive much rain it is enough to make the trees and other plants a little greener than before the rain. High of 82 degrees yesterday and a low temperature of 65 degrees (at 8:10 AM this morning, the temperature has been dropping).
5/2/2010 8:15 AM 0.39 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another wet and rainy morning. A steady rain falling and 54 degrees. 93 % humidity as well with a 3 MPH wind coming from the east. 0.55 inches of rain over the last two days. A good sign for May! Another pleasant surprise for May, was a rainbow yesterday evening. Pink and red clouds accompanied the rainbow, which was off toward the south. I could even see another rainbow forming, but it did not materialize to anything.
5/3/2010 8:15 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A small amount of rain in the gauge from yesterday morning. The rain let up right around the late morning hours and it stayed quite warm and humid for the rest of the day. Some dew on the ground, but bright sunshine is dominating the seen. A big cumulus cloud off toward the south, but other than that nothing much else to report. A chance of thunderstorms today and tonight. A high temperature of 70 degrees yesterday and another 70 degree day may be in the books.
5/4/2010 8:15 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 49 degrees and 79% humidity on a overcast morning. Some light drizzle was falling earlier this morning, but as of now there is no rain falling. A wonderful sky this morning. A glory shining through the stratocumulus clouds. Some big cumulus off toward the west with other stratus clouds around. A chance of showers today with some rain tonight and tomorrow. More thunderstorms on the way!
5/5/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A wonderful sky this morning at 8:15. Stratus clouds that look almost like lenticular clouds (saucer shaped). 57 degrees with 59 % humidity. Two straight days of 70 degree weather. A high yesterday of 74 and a high on Monday of 73. Today should be a little cooler. A big cool down into this weekend. Temperatures in the 40s and a chance of snow. Let me say that again....SNOW. Unheard of in May! It should not accumulate and most likely will be a mix. The rain has just moved in. A line extending from Benton Harbor up to Traverse City. Rain started around 9:55 AM.
5/6/2010 8:15 AM 0.06 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 47 degrees. 71 % humidity and a calm wind blowing. A low last night of 45 degrees. Not a cold as they were calling for. Light wispy cumulus clouds with a very bright sun this morning. 0.06 inches of rain felling between 9:55 AM May 5th and 10:45 AM May 5th. The electronic gauge was very close to the CoCoRaHS gauge, only 0.01 inches greater. A nice sunny day today with temperatures in the upper 50s. Slightly below average with more rain moving in for tomorrow. A great Spring for mowing lawns with all the rain we have received!
5/7/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I felt a few sprinkles falling and saw some rain drops around the funnel of the gauge. 46 degrees and 63% humidity. A 9.3 MPH wind from the ENE. The rain has yet to reach Grand Rapids, but the line dose extend out into the lake north of Muskegon. Yellow colors coming from the big splotch of rain, which means some heavy showers. Looks like we might get some serious rainfall!
5/8/2010 8:15 AM 0.57 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Over a half an inch of new rain this morning. 36 degrees and 91% humidity. An 11.1 MPH wind from the NW, with a high wind last night of 24 MPH. 0.63 inches in the electronic gauge. Moderate to heavy rain yesterday started around 10:10 AM and continued until 2:30 PM. A break from 2:30 to 4PM with light drizzle starting up. That same light drizzle has continued all the way into this morning. No snow on the ground and no flakes falling.
5/9/2010 8:15 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A frosty morning. Shaded areas are covered with frost, while the sunny spots have quite a bit of dew on them. A low last night of 28 degrees, almost a record low. Light rain/ice pellets lasted only until 1:30 PM yesterday. The clouds gradually went away as the late afternoon hours went on. Sunshine for the evening.
5/10/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 No precipitation to report this morning. Dew on the ground this morning, but the bright sun is melting things off real fast. There is some frost in shaded areas much like yesterday. 35 degrees and 75% humidity. The barometer is sky high at 30.40 inHg and has been going up slowly over the last 24 hrs. Low of 27 degrees last night!
5/11/2010 8:15 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 The rain is coming down in sheets this morning. Mainly pulled along by the brisk winds from the east. A 15 MPH wind and 40 degrees welcome us. 83 % humidity out there and the electronic gauge reads 0.02 inches of total rainfall. The fairly moderate to heavy rain started right around 8 PM, with light rain before then. A good day to stay indoors and read a book!
5/12/2010 8:15 AM 0.54 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A wet morning. At least the ground. Overcast for the most part and 43 degrees with 81% humidity. The winds have died down compared to some >20 MPH winds yesterday. Rained most of the day Tuesday. The major moderate-heavy rain ended around 4:30PM yesterday, with light drizzle/mist setting in around 7PM. This mist was also accompanied by some light fog. 0.62 inches in the electronic gauge. A big difference compared to what the CoCoRaHS gauge collected. Thunderstorms are expected tonight and tomorrow. The real question is how severe will they be?
5/13/2010 8:15 AM 0.09 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A flash of lightning followed by rumbles of thunder greet us on the weather deck this morning. 0.08 inches in the electronic gauge and the temperature is 45 degrees. we have 84 % humidity with a 11 MPH wind from east blowing in. The barometer is quite high for such rainy weather hovering around the 30.10 inHg. This rainy weather started right around 4:30 AM, with light drizzle. The big patch of wet weather came in around 6 AM, and has continued raining ever since. Moderate to heavy rain falling non-stop!
5/14/2010 9:00 AM 0.66 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A beautiful May morning. Wispy cumulus clouds, light breezes, and abundant sunshine this morning. The temperature of 52 degrees makes it quite mild outside. The foggy weather accompanied by mist and light rain has lifted and we are in for a beautiful day it appears. I recorded hourly rainfall totals from the system yesterday. For the first hour (from 8:15 AM to 9:15 AM), we received 0.31 inches of rain. From 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM, we received 0.13 inches, followed by 0.19 inches from 10:15 to 1:15 PM. I was not home to report at 11:15 or 12:15. We received 0.03 inches of rain between 1:15 PM and 5:15. The main bunch of rain ended around 5 PM. To much surprised, the electronic gauge over the last 24HRS has the same total as the CoCoRaHS gauge this morning, 0.66 inches of new liquid.
5/15/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another beautiful morning. 45 degrees and 76% humidity. A dead calm wind outside compared to the fairly windy day yesterday (top wind of 25 MPH yesterday). A light dew is covering the ground due to the temperature dropping down to 37 degrees last night. A mainly clear sky. Some light cirrus clouds hanging around. Looks like temperatures are finally going to get back to normal this weekend and into next week.
5/16/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A mild morning. 45 degrees and another sunny day appears to be in the books. We might hit 70 degrees for the first time in May. Our average high for May has only been 62 degrees, which is quite a bit below average. Next week appears to warm up into the upper 70s. 2.67 inches of rain for the month. We should be at the 3 inch mark by the time the month is over.
5/17/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 An overcast sky and 50 degrees this morning. We have an 8.5 MPH wind from the NE and no rain.
5/18/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 50 degrees. Wonderful stratus and cumulus formations. A mainly cloudy sky, but the sun is trying to break through. High yesterday of 68 degrees. Today we should hit 70 degrees for the first time this May.
5/19/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A summer-like smell is in the air this morning. Bright sunshine and 50 degrees. Looks like we're headed for another day with temperatures in the 70s. 80s are in the forecast for next week. We'll see how that pans out.
5/20/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 These sunny and mild mornings are starting to become pretty common around here. A low last night of 44 degrees around 6:30 AM. 54 degrees right now and 68% humidity. Some dew covering the ground, but everything is dry this morning. Isolated showers yesterday. No rain here. Maybe some sprinkles. Big cumulus clouds as well during the afternoon hours yesterday. Hazy weather as well yesterday, due to the fire danger. Even though there has been no warning or watch issued, things are very dry. I mowed a lawn yesterday and the dust was just awful. High temperature of 83 degrees yesterday. Not a record but 10 degrees above average.
5/21/2010 8:50 AM 0.05 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 After about a week of 0.00 inches of precipitation we have finally received some rainfall. Rain started around 7:45 AM this morning and has continued since. Just light rain falling. 57 degrees and the humidity is up in the 80s. A high yesterday of 84 degrees. The highest temperature so far this year.
5/22/2010 8:15 AM 0.16 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A warm and very humid morning. 63 degrees and 77% humidity. Overcast with some slight haze hanging around. Rain yesterday morning stopped around the noon hour, with more rain after 1PM. A break in the action from 4PM to about 8PM. Some sunshine broke out during that period and the humidity and temperature really went up (especially humidity). At times I was thinking that we were in for some severe weather considering the way the sky looked and the humidity and temperature readings. Another batch of rain came in from the south at 8:03 PM to be exact. This batch contained a severe thunderstorm warning when it was in southern lower Michigan. No thunder in Big Rapids though. The rain fell light to moderate, but no heavy showers. This batch fizzled out and only light drizzle was falling around 8:30 PM or so. Light drizzle lasted until 10PM, when the rain finally stopped. Things are very green out there now after the nice coating of rain! Hot/humid weather with temperatures in the upper 80s for next week. Something we don't see much in late May!
5/23/2010 8:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A very warm morning, due to the high humidity levels. 81% humidity and 62 degrees. The sun is very hot out there already. Much of the fog has lifted that was along the ground before. A hot day in the forecast with temperatures in the mid-80s.
5/24/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 72 degrees with 75% humidity out there this morning. A sign that temperatures might hit 90 degrees out there. Very warm! A high yesterday of 87 degrees and muggy. This morning reveals another muggy day today, as long as the humidity levels stay high.
5/25/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 68 degrees and 71% humidity. A high of 89 degrees yesterday. Another hot one today. Bright sunshine this morning. Wonderful summer cumulus clouds for yesterday. A beautiful picture.
5/26/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 70 degrees with 73% humidity. Chance of T-storms this afternoon.
5/27/2010 8:15 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A fairly wet morning. Pop up thunderstorms produced the 0.04 inches of new rainfall. These thunderstorms came through around 5:50 PM, accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall. Some cloud to ground lightning with big thunder claps too. Clearly the upper 80 to lower 90 degree heat made these thunderstorms a reality. The heavy rain stopped around 6:10 PM. Light rain showers after 6:10, which fizzled out around 7:30 PM. A huge drop in temperature as the storms approached the area. I would say a ten degree drop in temperature from 90 degrees to about 80 degrees as soon as the weather started to rock and roll. The dewpoint last night was really something as well. A high dewpoint recorded yesterday of 64 (9:50 PM). Very uncomfortable. A sunny day again today with no chance of rain in the forecast. Hopefully by tomorrow this muggy/humid weather will come to a close. Record high yesterday here in Big Rapids, topping 91 degrees!
5/28/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M One of the coldest morning in a long time. Not that cold though, only 60 degrees with the humidity up in the 50% range. Bright sunshine!
5/29/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A perfect blue sky this morning. The moon last night was a eerie orange color. A balmy 72 degrees. High temperature yesterday of 89 degrees. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
5/30/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 67 degrees and 67% humidity on another sunny morning. Low of 63 degrees with a high yesterday of 88 degrees, well above what they predicted would be the high. The lawns are very parched. We need more rain.
5/31/2010 8:15 AM 0.50 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Happy Memorial Day everybody, and God Bless America! 67 degrees on this Memorial Day. 87% humidity with bunches of pop-up thunderstorms around the area. I woke this morning to claps of thunder and heavy torrential rain around 5 AM lasting only 20 minutes. We had another cell come into the area before then around 4 AM as the radar shows. With this nice rainfall we should be right about at the average mark. We certainly needed it. Things were getting very brown out there. A chance of these pop-up storms for the rest of the day. Temperature in the 70s. High yesterday of 90 degrees. Another record!
6/1/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain in the gauge this morning. Lots of rain south of us though. All the rain stayed south of Big Rapids pretty much. Things are green though. Another round of showers tonight and tomorrow with thunderstorms. A low last night of 51 degrees. Pretty cold considering the warm weather this afternoon. It is in the 80s once again.
6/2/2010 8:15 AM 0.07 M M M M A wet morning with a little bit of rain in the gauge. A break in the action for now, but another chunk of rain has almost reached Big Rapids. It should start raining again pretty soon. The electronic gauge reads the same amount as the CoCoRaHS gauge, 0.07 inches. 66 degrees out there with 83% humidity. Looks like we're in for some cooler weather with temperatures in the 70s for the rest of the week.
6/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Once again we have fairly minimal rain in the gauge this morning. 57 degrees is the temperature. It has been in the upper 50s so far this morning. Very comfortable weather. A chance of showers for the rest of the week including today. A much cooler week, which we have all been waiting for.
6/4/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 54 degrees and FOGGY.
6/5/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 M M M M Only 0.01 inches of rain this morning. Light showers passed by yesterday during the late morning to early afternoon hours. Not much accumulation of rain though. We have a very mild morning. 64 degrees and 80% humidity. The fog is starting to lift and even the sun is making an appearance.
6/6/2010 8:15 AM 0.66 M M M M A nice dose of rain came rolling through during the evening hours. Mainly moderate rain and very steady with virtually no let up. 63 degrees this morning and 68% humidity. The grass should start to green up after this new rain. Everything has been very brown around Big Rapids.
6/7/2010 8:15 AM T M M M M 51F
6/8/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 57 degrees and some sunshine. A very nice day yesterday. Not too hot. A high of only 72 degrees. More rain tonight and tomorrow.
6/9/2010 9:30 AM 0.29 M M M M
6/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 60 degrees and a light dew on the ground this morning. A beautiful morning. Sunny with some scattered puffy cumulus clouds floating around.
6/11/2010 8:15 AM 0.16 M M M M The rain just keeps coming so far this June. 61 degrees and 88% humidity. Scattered cumulus popcorn shaped clouds around. No sign of the sun though. The rain came through around 9:30 PM last night. Light rain which turned over to fairly steady moderate rain around 11 PM. That patch that came through around 11 PM must have ended during the early morning hours. A band of rain extending from the Western U.P. all the way down to the South Haven area is coming into the picture this morning. The bulk of it appears to be heading mainly north east though, and might just miss us.
6/12/2010 8:15 AM 0.02 M M M M Stepping outside this morning was like stepping into a steam bath. 71 degrees and 80% humidity. Very humid for so early in the morning. Only a little bit of rain in the gauge from some passing showers coming through late yesterday morning and early afternoon. The severe storms that the weathermen were calling for yesterday never hit around here. Heavy storms north of us though, around the Traverse City area.
6/13/2010 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A gloomy morning today. Cumulus clouds are dark and filling the sky. The patchy fog that was in the forecast has lifted and as far as I know, the fog never formed. But I was not up real early so there might have been some fog earlier. A mild morning. It is 66 degrees outside. No new rainfall. Yesterday turned out to be a fairly warm and humid day (high temp. of 76F). Thank goodness for the light breezes we had yesterday. Those breezes made the humidity seem not so bad. A sunny day appears to be out of the question over the next couple days. Temperatures are staying right around normal in the 70s.
6/14/2010 8:15 AM 0.10 0.0 M M M A cool and overcast morning. The weathermen really got the story wrong about last night. My electronic gauge reads 0.11 inches of rain and they were only calling for a 20% chance of isolated showers. I guess they were isolated. The radar did show promise of rain heading toward Big Rapids, so I guess we can't blame the weathermen too much. They at least called for some rain. More rain on the way for tonight. I think we will get some too. There is a good sized chunk of rain slowly moving toward West Michigan.
6/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 61 degrees and 77% humidity on this overcast morning. Rain is in the forecast but nothing on the radar around Big Rapids as of yet. A quite windy morning with winds up to 15MPH.
6/16/2010 8:15 AM 0.68 M M M M A very nice soaking rain yesterday evening and last night. Overcast this morning and 63 degrees. We have light breezes from the west between 10 and 15MPH. Light rain started around 4:30PM yesterday. On and off light rain showers continued throughout the evening. A heavy band of showers moving south to north came through around the midnight hour and lasted until 4AM (I just happened to wake up about when the rain stopped). No rain since then. 0.75 inches in the electronic gauge. With this rain, we should be right around normal. It is great to see all this rain compared to last year.
6/17/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 M M M M A nice sunny morning today for the first time in quite a few days. The temperature is fairly cool at 58F. A little bit of rain in the gauge from some light mist/rain yesterday morning that came through. A high yesterday of only 68 degrees. Quite a bit below average. More summer-like weather is on its way with temperatures in the 80s later this week. With those warmer temperatures, the chance of some thunderstorms are possible.
6/18/2010 8:15 AM T 0.0 M M M Light rain moving though around 8:00 AM. Rain started just 5 minutes before the usually observation time. A mild morning with a temperature of 65F. Hopefully these showers can pass though so that the mobile home park garage sale can start. In the ten years we have lived here this is the first time it has rained on the garage sale day. Luckily it continues into tomorrow, so we have another chance if today is an all day rain.
6/19/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 M M M M We missed all the severe weather last night. What the weathermen were calling for (heavy rain, hail, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning), never happened. All we received was 0.01 inches of rain (in both CoCoRaHS and electronic gauges), from a line of light rain showers between 8 AM and 9 AM. A very warm day yesterday though. The warmest since that heat spell late May and earlier this month. A high of 87 degrees yesterday. Today we are in for similar weather without the chance of rain. Highs in the 80s. Already 68 degrees and climbing with the sun just poking out of the clouds.
6/20/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A very warm sun this morning and quite bright I might add. 65 degrees is the temperature and 72% humidity. A nice day yesterday with temps in the lower 80s. Today appears to be our last day of dry weather before the chance of thunderstorms rolls on in for next week.
6/21/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A warm morning and once again bright sunshine. Only a few stratus clouds off toward the east. 69 degrees. These warm temperatures we are going to get today should fuel the thunderstorms we are expected to get. We'll see how severe they are.
6/22/2010 8:15 AM 0.12 M M M M A wet morning after rain last night. 68 degrees this morning with fast moving clouds heading south and east. It is also windy out there as well.
6/23/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 68 degrees at 8:15 and about 90% humidity. We have heavy rain falling now, but all was quiet at 8:15. Rain started right around 8:35 AM. A nice batch of rain, but once again the real severe stuff continues to hit south of the Big Rapids area.
6/24/2010 8:00 AM 0.13 M M M M 0.13 inches of new rain and the grass is growing!!! A windy morning and numerous tree limbs are down from last nights high winds.

6/26/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M NO RAIN!!!
6/28/2010 8:15 AM 1.36 M M M M THE 1.36 INCHES OF RAIN IS A MULTI-DAY ACCUMULATION OF RAIN FROM YESTERDAY (AT 8:15 AM), TO TODAY (AT 8:15 AM). Heavy rain yesterday between 4PM and 5PM. Torrential rain I should say. My electronic gauge read 0.76 inches of new rain in that one hour period. It was amazing how fast the clouds cleared after the heavy showers passed. Around 5:45 PM yesterday clear skies came into the picture. A very pretty picture with the rain droplets still covering the grass. Another brief shower came through around 10 PM, bringing with it some heavy rain that lasted only 5 minutes or so. Bright sunshine this morning and about 70 degrees. Cooler weather this week.

7/5/2010 9:15 AM 0.14 M M M M We have our first rainfall this month. A very muggy morning. The temperature is 77 degrees with 78% humidity. A mainly overcast morning with some hazy sun peeking through. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday. The fireworks in Big Rapids were pretty cool, considering the cloudy skies we had last night.
7/6/2010 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another warm morning. 76 degrees and quite humid. A high of 90 degrees for the second straight day yesterday.

7/8/2010 9:15 AM 0.43 M M M M A light drizzle falling at 9:15 this morning. 72 degrees is the temperature. Quite cool compared to the hot and humid day yesterday. A high of 89 degrees yesterday. Looks like we'll hit 80 again today. A real heavy shower passed by yesterday around 12:35 PM, giving us 0.32 inches of rain in 50 minutes. Lots of localized flooding around the area during the storm. Since then we have received 0.11 inches of rain.
7/9/2010 8:15 AM 0.14 M M M M 70 degrees and 82% humidity. The 0.14 inches of rain came from a line of moderate to heavy showers, passing through around 10, 11 AM yesterday.

8/8/2010 8:15 AM 0.45 M M M M Torrential rain started the action today at 7:14 AM. 0.45 inches of rain in half an hour. The hardest rain I have seen fall in all the years I have lived here (18 yrs.). Some localized flooding around the area with the hard rain. Lightning and thunder accompanied the rain as well. Another warm day in the forecast, with highs in the 80s. A big batch of rain is headed our way once again with moderate rainfall. 69 degrees and 88% humidity this morning. A fairly windy morning as well. During the event, the rain was being pushed by gusty winds. A very interesting effect. The first rain of the month has finally fallen! So long, dry grass!

8/10/2010 8:45 AM 0.01 M M M M The minuscule amount of rain was from some passing showers yesterday that came though during the afternoon. These showers reminded me of lake effect snow showers. Very isolated as well. A hot day today with temps expected to hit 90 degrees. The summer heat continues.

8/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M A very foggy morning, with the sun shining through the thick fog. Quite a mysterious and eerie scene. I took some pictures of the fog and sun. When you look at them straight on you can't see the sun, but when you look at them at an angle you can. Pretty neat! A little bit of rain in the gauge this morning from a light band of showers which came through during the late night hours.
8/26/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 47 degrees and a clear blue sky, make for a very cold summer morning. Bright sunshine and a thick dew on the ground and on the gauge. High temperatures the last couple of days have only reached the mid to upper 70s. This trend should end by the weekend. 80 degree weather appears to be coming back.
8/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool summer morning. 49 degrees at 8AM, with a low temperature of 47 degrees once again for the second straight day. Back to the 80 degrees summer heat starting today.

9/3/2010 8:00 AM 1.36 M M M M Fall weather has definitely emerged to West Michigan this morning. Even the trees are showing some signs of the fall colors. The grass and trees are noticeably green this morning and the shortage of rain is over. Some very heavy rain yesterday evening and late last night. In one 13 minute period, we racked up 0.19 inches of rain. Bright flashes of lightning made the night day. The line of storms that came through around 11:07 PM last night, produced some gusty winds along with frequent lightning and heavy rain.
9/4/2010 7:30 AM 0.17 M M M M Wonderful Fall clouds fill the sky this morning, much like what we saw yesterday. 49 degrees at 7:30 AM and quite a bit of rain in the gauge. I was not here in Big Rapids for much of the day, but we must have gotten some lake effect rain late yesterday afternoon. Coming back from the Ann Arbor area was constant light drizzle along with heavy mist. Along with this cool weather we are getting some fairly strong winds as well.

9/6/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M A bright sunny morning with cumulus popcorn shaped clouds covering the sky. A little bit of rain in the gauge from some light rain showers which came across the area around 11:25 PM. What a beautiful day yesterday. It is so nice to see some cooler weather in West Michigan, after such a warm summer.
9/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.21 M M M M 71 degrees and 67% humidity, make this morning the warmest this month. After such cool weather these past couple of days, especially during the morning, I was surprised to see the rise in temperatures this morning. More rain in the gauge this morning for the seventh straight day. Light to moderate rain showers fell between 10:07 AM and 4:30 PM yesterday. Not a steady rain though. Lighter rain showers appeared later in the day, with a much heavier rain band coming thru earlier in the day. The winds, which have been relatively calm this month, are expected to pick up today. Already the winds, coming from the SW, are increasing in speed as the morning rambles on.
9/8/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast skies this morning and 54 degrees. No rain to report for the first time in over a week. The windy weather continues this morning with a high wind of 20 MPH recorded last night. 31 MPH was the peek wind yesterday from the SW. Winds are now from the WNW this morning, and making things much cooler than the actual temperature. Fall clouds again today. The Stratocumulus clouds are easy to spot this morning. High of 74 degrees yesterday, but the temperatures really began to drop as the wind picked up later in the day (about 67 degrees at 5 PM). Wind chill reading were in the 50s. A even cooler day today, with temperatures in the lower to mid-60s.
9/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A nippy morning here in Big Rapids today. 49 degrees and bright sunshine. Some light and fluffy cumulus clouds about, but nothing to block the bright sun. A deep blue sky as well, which is why temperatures dropped down to 47 degrees early this morning. More cool weather on the way today and for the weekend. No more 80 degree weather for now.
9/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A nippy 41 degrees this morning and clear skies. We have that same deep blue color in the sky that we had yesterday. 39 degrees was the low temperature early this morning.
9/11/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Party overcast and 53 degrees at 7:30 AM. A beautiful orange sky around 7 AM this morning. Stratus clouds with some cumulus hanging around. The orange sky has faded away, now that the sun has risen. God Bless the United States of America, as we remember 9/11.
9/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.61 M M M M Bright sunshine and lots of dew covering the ground at 8AM. 55 degrees and 80% humidity. 0.71 inches in the electronic gauge. 0.61 inches of rain fell between the hours of 9 AM and 3:30 PM. Almost the total amount recorded for August as well as July. Well above average. Everything is green and some of the trees north of Big Rapids are turning color. Fall is on its way!

Very isolated rain showers yesterday, but no rain in the gauge. These light rain showers were coming from unpronounced clouds. A heavier rain line came in around 5 PM, but only light rain fell with light accumulations.
9/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.80 M M M M WOW! Lots of rain in the gauge this morning. The mysterious rainfall must have fallen either early this morning, or late last night. 54 degrees and 95% humidity. 0.88 inches in the electronic gauge. Overcast this morning and very wet.
