10/12/2009 5:36 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 28.9 F, frost has finally happened in our small corner of the Granite State. This is the 3rd frost advisory, but this looks to the real one. Rumor has it, there is possible Snow flurries Monday night. I can't wait.... Welcome, welcome, New England winter. The leaves started changing colour in the 2nd week of August, and are close to bare. Grab the shovels and mittens. It's here. Happy Snow Day!!
11/12/2009 3:00 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M I got my rain guage today!!! Just have to wait to Friday night/Saturday to use it, according to the NWS for the rain. It's forecast to be up to 3/4 inches. On 12 November around 1300 till 1400(EDT), there was a brilliant "sundog" to the northwest of the sun. It looked like a brilliant comet, with the tail pointing where it was moving to. As time progressed the "sundog" travelled to the northwest, unlike a real comet, that would have been heading towards the sun, as it pointed. I wish I could send the photo that we took. A month ago we got a picture of a "upside down rainbow", sure signs of the ice chrystals at high altitude. Happy Snow Days.

Took snow level reading from the Front yard where the wind is very busy at work. I'll see what I can do for a snow meltdown later in the day. Mind you this will be a wind blown snow measure melt-down reading as well. I'm enjoying the storm, though. Much more unpredictable than sun all day. Happy Snow Day, from the Granite State.

1/9/2010 5:00 AM T T M M M Small snow event. Lasted 8 hours, but the snowfall was VERY light. I actually saw 3 snowflakes on the deck table standing in one spike,of their 6, reflecting the light from the porch light.Perfectly shaped they were. Makes winter worth living through. Snowfall was 0.10, but it won't let me put that in for some reason.

Had 40+ wild turkeys trotting through the front yard. (no they didn't each the turkey trot). Scared the youngest cat,( Puss Puss) she hid below the window sill so they couldn't attack her. Ceaser Cat just looked at them, amusement, I suppose. looks like a precip free, but cold week coming on.

1/18/2010 5:00 AM 0.10 0.7 M M M This an estimated amount, as we had 3 hours (10PM to 1 AM)of light/moderate snow at 33*F and it melted in the guage. The deck table has 0.75 inches. I'll go with that, for now. Down to 31.1*F so it should collect somewhat better. These mixed precip storms can be tricky. I think we might be losing on this storm as we have with the last 5. Happy Snow day, from the Granite State.
1/19/2010 4:00 AM 0.42 1.7 0.42 M M This was a storm that was annoying. Most of the precip was liquid, at the beginning and of course while I was snoozing, (I sleep with the bats) more liquid. We got a total if 1.70 inches snow, but the meltdown measure was mostly liquid measure that had mixed with frozen.
1/20/2010 4:00 AM T 2.0 M M M Tricky storm this was. All told we got 2 inches of snow. The rain guage theory didn't measure the snowfall, as we were at 34*F and it melted upon landing. Which led to false water measure. We'll try the rain event for Monday, and see if that goes better.

1/24/2010 4:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M With a temp of 12*F and calm wind, DP of 10*F, one would not be led to believe there is heavy rain and temps in the 50's coming. Thunder in January, it's possible...in select areas though. I'm hoping this storm works up to be a memorable event. Rain guage is ready to collect. The wild turkeys (40, or so) decided to fly across the road, rather than walk yesterday. They know something's up. Looks to be 3 inches of snow on the ground,so we should have more bare ground after this event, and we are, indeed, in a flash flood watch, from late this evening until Monday afternoon. Then, back to the deep freeze!

1/26/2010 4:00 AM 1.32 M M 1.0 M Very impressive storm. No sign of the wild turkeys today, they found shelter. Bad luck for the kitten who watches them from the kitchen window. We got 3 or so hours of heavy (0.25/hr) rain, and the wind didn't make it close to criteria for the advisory that was issued. The Brook is once again liquid, making a lot of noise, and will surely freeze over by the weekend. Ready for the next storm....be it a while away.
1/28/2010 4:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Getting ready for winter to return with a vengence. Cold arctic air is planning to move in , and it will be wind driven. Forecasts are suggesting wind chills on the -10 to -20 area. Haven't seen the wild turkeys in days, and the coyotes seem to be taking a break. Last time I heard the dogs was when it was raining, Monday. Poor pups, I hope they are going to be warm. I think I'm going to have to put on a second pair of socks for this cold spot coming in.

2/2/2010 4:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Baby, it's cold outside. Our turkeys are now taking the route to the woods behind the house, rather than the front lawn. They're back! All looking well fed. That's good news. Lows have been in the lower single numbers, highs in the upper 20's. No precip to report. A friend of mine in West Virginia said he's had 72+ inches of snow, and several more storms coming through. Lucky duck. Aside from the small mole hills of snow on the side of the road here, we have alot of bare, brown grass showing. Last Monday, when it got to 50*F at 10 PM, we got a lot of rain that melted the snow. We won't be seeing 50 again for a long while, I'm sure.
2/3/2010 4:00 AM T 0.3 M M M This is an interesting storm, not storm as such. Precip event. It's been lightly flurrying, since 11:15PM, all said a third of an inch snowfall, yet, throughout the event, the Moon, (left half) has been visible. 22*F, calm wind , and as best could be said, 'overcast' with light snow. No turkeys seen today, but the kitten homed in on a grey squirrel and did her usual "chatter and squirm". She's fun to watch when she ducks just above window sill level to avoid being seen by the wild turkeys. Yes, she's in "ready-to-run-to-safety" mode should the turkeys get too close to the window. (she's run to safety twice). She only "chatters" when the squirrels come close. She's "VEWWY VEWWY QUIET", when the 40 or so turkeys appear, but they hypnotize her.
2/17/2010 5:00 AM 0.56 8.0 0.56 M M Good storm, finally. 2nd big measure snow this winter. Previous was an 8.9 in early December. The ground was bare for this one.Almost gave up hope for a winter.

3/1/2010 4:00 AM M M M M M Since my posts weren't posting last week, I can only give estimates. There was 4 inches of wet heavy snow, alot of the snow after came down and melted due to temp in the mid 30's. Wind wasn't too bad, 35ish, and the snow was heavy enough to take down, well drag down my shortwave wire antenna. I fixed that. we lost electrics from 2:07 AM Sunday Morn till 4:30 . that's the best I can say.(Changed report to multi-day accumulation.)

Temps in the mid to upper 50's (we got to 59.6*F, Monday), it's no surprise the ground's bare. 3 days in the upper 50's has that effect. Thoughts of spraying the shed for hornets and wasps, and the eves of the house are stirring. They are quite bad tempered. NWS is saying an impressive rain situation could, repeat, could, be coming up for the weekend.

3/13/2010 4:31 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 35.2*F the sleet,(small pellets) have started. Ground is bare, snowless. Our area won't flood, but Water Street, and Vernon street in Keene, could, from what the forecast has to offer. Stay tuned.
3/14/2010 6:00 AM M M M M M I'm not emptying the guage, because I want to see overflow. Forecast suggests up to 4 inches of rain. Last look, though was at 4:30 PM EST, (2130 UTC) it was 0.18 inches. This will end in a multiday report in the end. As of 6:02 EDT (1002UTC) we have 0.51 inches of rainfall. We had sleet/rain mix from 8ish till 1am EST. Temp, currently is 35.9*F, and very slowly rising. Wind is not a big issue here,as it's from the east northeast, which is blocked from Turkey Hill. The lights have blinked low a few times, but so far so good.
3/16/2010 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M It's calmed down in Cheshire County. Stars are shining, and as rumor has it, there's a pleasant warm up coming. The cats are going to love having the windows open. The kitten's goin g to be window shopping for wild turkeys, but hiding so they won't take her out. She's silly. The brook's making alot of noise, but not flooding. The canadian geese will love the water.
3/17/2010 4:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudless day, high temp got to 61.3. The brook across the road's calmed down. Not alot of bird activity, but the bugs, (flies and that wierd green bug) are out. Total silence from the 40+ turkeys. The kitten's still waiting to window shop for them.

7/8/2010 5:00 AM T M M M M Interesting situation, typical New Hampshire weather, actually. I was in the south of Keene, NH (Shaws's) , waiting for a cab. I smelled what seemed like water evaporating, from wooded land or something. It was a VERY light sprinkle going on. Not a big deal. The water I smelled was evaporating off the parking lot. As the cab got to West ST, there were rather large puddles on roadside. (a mile and a half North). The driver said he was on Washington St when the sky let loose, but for only 3 minute or so. Saturday appears to be the big water/rain event. I hope so as the last 3 severe thunderstorm watches produced nothing. Getting dry here.

2/25/2010 3/01/2010 4:00 AM 5 1.40 4.0 1.37 Since my posts weren't posting last week, I can only give estimates. There was 4 inches of wet heavy snow, alot of the snow after came down and melted due to temp in the mid 30's. Wind wasn't too bad, 35ish, and the snow was heavy enough to take down, well drag down my shortwave wire antenna. I fixed that. we lost electrics from 2:07 AM Sunday Morn till 4:30 . that's the best I can say.
3/11/2010 3/15/2010 11:11 PM 5 1.21 0.0 1.21 The NWS had us forecast to have between 2 and 4 inches of rain. We fell short of that. Wind was at best 20 MPH. No flooding in the area. Haven't seen from the turkeys in a few days, they hunkered down, I imagine.
