First true ground frost of the season. The skies didn't read the forecast so it was a clear night for meteor observing. 25 in 2.4 chilly, breezy hours; 11 Orionids (peak is Wed AM),7 from other showers, and 7 sporadics. Light flurry 10:15 AM, light snow started 12:25 PM, snow and graupel 12:45 snow melted on contact till 1:15, when it began accumulating on colder surfaces. Considerable melting occurred all during event as temp during snowfall bottomed out at 34.2. High was 42.8 before snow started (11AM); 41.2 at snow start, AM low 27.7 after skies cleared toward dawn. It was I who suggested the coffee can BTW, Hardyston :) Did not list melted core value for event since so much melted on contact, just reported total melted precip in gauge, but did report SWE of snow on snow board in morning.

Unable to get Total snow core since snow is totally saturated and water makes a lousy biscuit. Second event with temps above freezing for the entire time. Overnight low 33.4 about 3:45 AM, yesterday's high 41.7 had melted plenty of snow, ground was only about 25% covered before it started to snow again.

12/12/2009 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Yesterday's high only 29.1, first all freezing day of the season, with brutal winds...very mid Jaunary like. Clear overnight, cold (24 -> 20 degrees), but light wind so I lasted for 4.2 hours of meteor watching. AM low 19.8 F. Counted 56 total meteors, 37 were Geminids (shower peaks Monday morning). Most spectacular was a magnitude -5 (Venus brightness) yellow-orange Northern Taurid fireball which fragmented into dozens of pieces as it swept below Gemini toward the SE horizon at 2:47 AM. Happened to be recording data at the time, my instantaneous reaction has made that tape unsafe for family listening! :-)
12/13/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Still some snow left on the front lawn, it will take more than yesterday's high of 37.6 to melt the remaining patches. This morning's low 24.3, rising to 28.4 by 7 AM under overcast skies. Birds at the feeder seem semi panicked this morning. First recorded Carolina Wren of the FeederWatch season. If it clears as predicted overnight should be perfect (and not as cold) conditions for the Geminid meteor shower peak...rates could reach over 100 per hour.
12/14/2009 7:00 AM 1.00 0.0 M T M 1.00 inch reading is exact. From start of precip at 9AM until 4PM (0.46") had dangerous event of what I call ground freezing rain. This is when air temp is above freezing, so no freezing rain on trees, wires, grass, wood surfaces, etc, but ground surfaces with large thermal mass and good conduction, very cold from the last week of average temps below freezing, cause rain to freeze on contact. Surfaces like roads, walkways, bare dirt. Roads throughout the area were closed due to icing, even as temp rose into the upper 30s. Still a few tiny patches of snow around. Ponding occurred on ground surfaces by end of event, as beneath was frozen solid; there was no water absorbed.

12/23/2009 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.5 0.55 Yesterday's high was 37.4, but only filtered sunshine, so there was less melting on exposed surfaces, and less compaction. However, low humidity increased sublimation of smaller patches on shadowed sidewalk. This morning's low 16.9 F.
12/24/2009 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.5 0.53 Yesterday's high 30.7 did little to melt or compact snow; no change in snow depth. This morning's low 21.9 F, 25.0 at 8:15 AM. Be cautious tomorrow, two cold days have left ground cold and road/walkway surfaces may remain below freezing well after air temp goes above, creating a situation like last weekend. SWE biscuit still roasting by an open fire (well, wood stove actually). Will update when it's done.
12/25/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.0 0.53 A little more melting, but still a White Christmas morn with 3 inches and 100% ground coverage. Yesterday's high a balmy 39.7, overnight low before midnight 23.7, rose to 32.4 F, 78% RH at 7 AM.

12/29/2009 7:00 AM T T T 0.0 0.00 Yesterday's high 37.8, 21.4 at 7 AM this morning and still falling. Very windy, so far only small branches down, but have to be concerned about losing power today. Extra soda bottles 3/4 filled with water taking up any empty space in the fridge and freezers! Few snow flurries late morning and early afternoon yesterday, and early morning hours today. A true midwinter day appears to be on tap.

1/2/2010 8:30 AM T T T 0.5 M Considerable melting from sunny high of 40.6 yesterday, 8:30 AM temp just above overnight low of 25.0. Snow shower ~11 PM whitened the ground (what I call a "fat" trace) but all evidence that it happend disappeared by 2 AM. Unable to separate 1/2 inch biscuit from snow board, working on an innovative method to accomplish that and obtain SWE. 2009 Precip total 53.85", 17% above normal (+7.85"). 46% of the rainfall (23.51") occurred during the JJA Summer period. 1/4/2010 7:00 AM T T T 0.5 0.12 Occasional flurries and a snow shower that lightly whitened the ground before it blew away during the whole day. High 22.8, this morning's low 17.4 F. Finally got a SWE biscuit off the snow board.
1/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.5 M Flurry free day yesterday. More Sun and a high of 28.8 led to more sublimation of snow. Fully exposed sunny areas and southward facing slopes now beginning to become snow free, although still ~ 80% ground coverage. This morning's low 18.5 F.
1/6/2010 7:00 AM T T T T T Woo Hoo, reached 30.0 degrees yesterday, this morning's low 25.7...feels like spring :) A few flurries yesterday morning. Snow coverage about 50% in neghborhood, less than 1/2 inch on snow boards so reported as trace.
1/7/2010 7:00 AM T T T T T A few dozen snowflakes in the morning yesterday. Very pretty 2mm sized classic snowflakes, wish I had a true macro lens or a microscope. High reached 33.3 degrees, first time above freezing since the 1st. Overnight low only 27.9F.

High 58.5 F; caused signfigant melting of frozen subsurface ground allowing rain to eventually soak in. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge closed our most vulnerable road. Event total 1.82". I also used my spare gauge (1.79") and snow biscuit cutter coffee can (1.78") in 1 foot equilateral triangle as an experiment. Considering it was windblown heavy rain, those readings are pretty darn close. Temp still falling (35.2) at obs time.
1/27/2010 7:00 AM T T T 0.0 0.00 A few snowflakes just before 1 PM. High 40.5, fell to 30.9 midnight low, this morning's low 27.0.

Temp during storm on 2/10 ranged from 31.3 to 33.6, low was at midnight just after snow ended 30.4 F. From 2-4 PM hourly snows were 2.8 and 2.3 inches; 7.4" between 2 and 6 PM. Took a core from my "new" snow board this morning, matched liquid reported from the incremental gauge catch total almost exactly. I use two gauges which I swap and melt every 6 hours that; total was 1.36 for the event. Core value,(which was hard to stuff into my 4" coffee can) was 1.33". Not bad, IMHO. Total SWE core from my "total" board. Largest daily and total snow depth since njcocorahs for my site.
2/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.0 M Good melting where you could get near the blacktop, but only slight compression of deep snow. Lots of sun and unexpected high 37.6 from morning low of 25.3 F = 31.5 avg.

2/14/2010 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 12.5 M Yesterday's GBBC Count, 81 individuals from 17 species including 34 Dark Eyed Juncos, 12 Blue Jays. 1 Cedar waxwing, uncommon here, and shockingly a Baltimore Oriole. Forgot to read it is supposed to overwinter in the tropics. Took me an hour to convince myself that's what it was, and it was flagged by the QA program, so I described my observation in great detail to the reviewer and he agreed that's what it was. Hope it comes back today for another examination!!
2/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 11.0 1.59 SWE Monday, 1.59" in 11.0 inches (avg) of snow (range 10 to 11.5"). "New" snow from last event was down from 13.4" to 8.0". Slow melting continues. PtCloudy yesterday high 38.5 low 22.9 avg 30.7 F. Day 3 of GBBC, 52 birds, 13 species. 21 Juncos, 8 Blue Jays, 4 Starlings, 3 Crows. Finally one of my downy woodpeckers showed up...a female. Haven't seen her in 2 weeks.
2/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.07 1.0 0.07 11.0 M Good melt day yesterday 22.1/40.5 avg 31.3 (12th day in a row with avg < 32 F). A few tenths of snow ~ 8 PM, another burst just before midnight brought 2/15 total to exactly 1.0". No snow at obs time. 4 day GBBC total 244 birds, 21 species. Avg 24 Dark eyed Juncos/day, 9.5 Blue Jays/day, 4.8 White Throated Sparrows and Mourning Doves/day. Other species > 2/day Tufted Titmouse, Black Capped Chickadee, House Finch, Northern Cardinal. 3 woodpecker species (Red Bellied, Downy, Hairy), and the wild card: the Baltimore Oriole on Saturday.
2/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.1 0.04 10.5 M Snow began ~ 8 AM and continued at decreasing rates until about 4 PM. Temp during event ranged from AM low of 30.2 to afternoon high of 37.4. Fell to 27.3 by midnight; average temp 32.4 F. Reached 0.1" before insolation through clouds and temperature stopped and reversed accumulation. Decent melting on asphalt surfaces.
2/18/2010 7:00 AM T T T 10.0 M Very light flurries throughout the day, then a snow shower 7-8 PM that whitened the ground. Barely a trace (haha) of it left by morning, only on icy patches of the sidewalk. Yesterday 21.7/36.7 = 29.2 avg.
2/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.5 M More slow melting, and it continued overnight! Yesterday, Partly Cloudy 27.5/43.3 = avg 35.4; warmest day since Jan 25. This morning's low of 32.0 occurred near midnight and his slowly risen ever since.
2/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 8.0 M Nice day yesterday (32.0/44.6 = avg 38.3), lots of melting on asphalt surfaces, but deep snowpack still only lost 1 1/2". First roofs clear, and the highly inclined S facing slopes showing some grass. Still 98% gound coverage though. Saw a fantastic pass of shuttle Endeavour leading the ISS by 5 degrees (half a fist width) at 5:20 AM...it was worth getting up for.
2/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 1.58 Another warm day 31.3/44.6 = 38.0 avg. Another inch of melt/compression to the snowpack. Some southward facing slopes are bare, but still > 95% coverage. Another shuttle/ISS pass this morning, but they were about 2 minutes apart. Almost no change is SWE since last week in deep snowpack, apparently it's all being absorbed. Yet cellar sump pump is running more as snow melts around the fringes. My gas bill and wood pile have appreciated the "February thaw".
2/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 1.60 A nice melting day, again, mostly on dark sufraces. South facing slopes becoming bare, but still >90% coverage. When taking snow depth and SWE biscuit, noticed that in addition to top crust (about 1" thick), there's another ice layer 3.5" below the surface...in fact I almost mismeasured because it was so hard I had to really force my metal yardstick though it. Yesterday 27.0/46.0 = 36.5 avg. No change in SWE, it's all being absorbed. First Feederwatch Northen Harrier ever yesterday.
2/23/2010 7:30 AM 0.38 2.0 M 7.5 2.04 Very light rain shower ~ 3 PM then nothing until snow started started at 9 PM. All snow accumulated to 2.0" by midnight when rain began to mix in and new snow total began to go in reverse. Mixed rain/snow till 3 AM, then all rain by 3:30 which continues through obs time. New snow down to 1.8" by 3 AM, 1.2" by 7:30 AM. Could not obtain pure snow sample for new snow core before rain mixed in, so only reported rain/snow total precip. Yesterday 25.3/44.8 = 35.1 F. Temp 36.5 at snow start, fell to 33.8 by 11PM to 3AM then began rising, up to 34.5 by morning. Now over 2" precip in snowpack. 100% ground coverage by snow.
2/24/2010 7:20 AM 0.87 0.2 M 6.5 1.89 Mostly drizzle and rain for last 24 hours, narrow temp tange 33.8/37.4 = 35.6 avg. drizzle at obs time yesterday and today. Exception was a period of moderate sleet with a bit of snow mixed in from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. That accounts for new snow depth below. Much had melted by morning. 2/23 day total 1.11" rain (mid-mid). Event total through obs time as drizzle continues 1.25". SWE biscuit finally melted; takes a long time to melt a coffee can packed with ice!!
2/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.12 0.5 0.12 5.5 1.60 Warm day yesterday with lots of melt despite limited sun. 34.5/46.5 = 40.5 avg (highest since Jan 25). A bit of drizzle after yesterday's obs (T). Precip this morning estimated to begin around 4:30 AM based on radar, the fact that it wasn't doing anything at 3 AM, and there was 0.2" snow by 6 AM, but very low snow/water ratio...possibly some rain at start. 7 AM 33.8F/86% RH, light snow, road surface just wet. SWE slug (it ain't even a biscuit anymore) finally melted.
2/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.99 9.0 M 14.0 M Snow depth readings are best estimates...since "new snow" on snow board, and previous bare gound surfaces are at the same overall level, so spilt the difference. It will take a while to melt what's in the tube, 0.45" melted before midnight. Things were under control till about 11PM, then wind made everything difficult. Road became snow covered about 6 PM as temp went below freezing,25.0 @ midnight, overnight low 23.0 F. Moderate snow at obs time, 23.5 degrees. There will be no ground total SWE measurement today.
2/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.12 1.7 0.12 12.0 2.18 Accumulating snow stopped by 1 PM except for heavy snow shower just before 4 PM that added another 0.4". Event total 11.2", 1.23" melted. Got up to 37.6 F yesterday afternoon causing considerable compaction and good asphalt surface melting with sunny periods which helped the dig out. Had sevaral heavy sun-snow showers. Flurries continue; the last I saw was at 6 AM. Total SWE core melted, had to do a two part core with the ol' coffee can...all the strength of the metal was needed for the bottom ice layer.
2/28/2010 7:00 AM T T T 10.0 M A few flurries during the warm day yesterday, high 42.4 F. Finished the driveway and cleared the two Fire Hydrants closest to my house. Light snow began 6:45 Am, had whitened the ground by 7 AM obs time with temp up to 29.5 F. Tried to dig out "new snow" snow board to place on the surface, but will need tools to penetrate 1" thick top ice layer so brought out board #3. Haven't seen #1 in weeks :) No Total snow SWE today, will save it for tomorrow.
3/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.06 0.3 M 9.5 2.23 Compaction has slowed a bit, yesterday 27.5/42.8 = 35.2 F. Morning snow from obs time to 10:30 AM amounted to 0.2", light flurries off and on all day, then another 0.1" around 4:45 PM followed by some mixed rain and snow showers. Really glad I bought a metal Yardstick at Home Depot for a home construction project a few years ago. Total snow SWE slightly higher than Saturday (2.23" vs 2.18")
3/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 2.12 Significant compression of snowpack yesterday (- 3 inches) with warm afternoon and mostly sunny March skies, but most absorbed yet again. South slopes and hill peaks of golf course now exposed, but still > 95% coverage in the neighborhood. (31.5/47.3 = 39.4) Upper 2" of snowpack melted during day and froze solid with overnight low of 28.6 so was almost able to support my weight....one less cheeseburger and I might have made it! Got coffee can core through and down to ground, but had to use a shovel to dig it out. Melting underway.
3/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.05 T M 6.0 M Light rain, and snow showers mainly after midnight continuing through obs time. Not much sun yesterday, though it did get up to 48.6 after AM low of 28.6 (38.6 avg); not as much compression of snowpack. Had to raise pecip from 0.04 to 0.05 after rain drained off inside of outer cylinder.
3/4/2010 7:00 AM T T T 5.0 1.61 Very light snow continued until about 10 AM, melting on contact. Mostly cloudy and windy 34.3/43.9 =39.1. SWE slug taken, melting on wood stove. Tree shadows and south slopes now snow free but > 90% coverage.
3/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 4.0 1.32 Despite filtered sunshine, 45.9 high after low above freezing (32.5, avg 39.2) continued melting. Now sunnier areas snow free as well as deer paths across the lawn, still 65% coverage. SWE slug melt in process.
3/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.5 0.92 Once again limited sun but warm afternoon temperature continued melting. 32.7/49.3 =41.0 F. Snow coverage is just above 50%, so this morning will be last report of depth other than trace. Range was bare to 3.5" Crystal clear blue skies this morning.
3/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M Yesterday bright sun all day, 28.0/53.8 = 40.9 F, warmest high since Jan 25. Only about 25% of natural snowcover remains (up to 4" depth") so will report trace, of course plow and shovel piles will last a long time into spring.
3/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M Now about 15% snow coverage; highest natural depth in shaded areas is about 4". Yesterday bright sun all day, 28.0/56.7 = 42.4 F.
3/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T What a spring thaw! Yesterday 31.5/60.1 = 45.8 F. Warmest high since Dec 4th, nice bookends to meteorological winter (DJF). About 5% natural snow coverage remains in shady zones, still about 4" max depth. Looks like the High Bridge Hills Golf Course is clear enough for the duffers.
3/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T Above freezing all day yesterday (34.3/61.3 = 47.8) and sun all day worked on melting piles of snow. Highest temp since 12/3. Still < 5% natural snow in shady areas but highest measurement only 3". First violet crocus have bloomed on south slope in back yard. Ground is thoroughly saturated, so upcoming rain will be running off, but at least there will be no snowmelt here to add to flooding threat here, although upstream on the South Branch Raritan diurnal melt has river running rather high.
3/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T Now celebrating 72 hours above freezing :) Three 60 degree days in a row (32.7/61.5 = 47.1) have melted most, but not all of the natural snow piles. Ground still quite saturated, cellar sump pump very busy.
3/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T Still awaiting the rain; so far just light fog and threatening skies. 4th day in a row over 60, 43.0/61.9 = 52.5 avg. Only the tiniest patches of natural snow left, even the piles are melting fast. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge > 80 percentile of median flow for days now, range is 1.5 to 2.2 times median during diurnal cycle with high near midnight and low near noon. All from snowmelt as total rainfall for March calendar month is 0.05"
3/13/2010 8:30 AM 0.58 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Last of snow has melted. Drizzle began shortly after yesterday's obs, accumulating rain about 1PM. 0.25" before midnight, 0.23" after. Yesterday 48.4/40.9 = 44.7 F. Standing water on saturated ground. A dozen front lawn crocuses (croci?) came up yesterday, but never opened up under dank conditions. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge running 3X normal median flow, highest level since Jan 26, still 2.5 feet below official flood stage. Roaring winds and vocal new kitten kept me awake all night long.
3/14/2010 8:30 AM 2.91 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 What a day! Heavy rain and wind, lost power for 6 hours (Not good with a busy sump pump!) Last night dozens of roads closed for downed wires in 4 sq mi High Bridge, this morning several closed from South Branch Raritan River flooding. 3/13 calendar day temp 39.8/48.0 = 43.8F, 3.20" precip. Event total (so far) 3.49", only 0.04" since midnight. Note this is 23 hour CoCoRaHS report due to EDT arriving.
3/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.43 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Yesterday 43.4/55.2 = 49.3 calendar day precip 0.34". 0.20" came in thunderstorm 10:30-11 AM. Two strikes (at 10:40 and 10:45) hit NJAA Observatory in Voorhees State Park ~ 1 km from my house. One hit portico and blasted chucks of concrete wall across parking lot and up to 120 feet into woods. Another hit two places; one a telephone pole, which then blasted a two foot trench at the base flinging rocks across the road, and nearby punched a 1 foot hole in the asphalt driveway flinging chunks up to 40 feet away. Yet in noontime sunshower, most of the dozen front lawn crocus here at home opened up, backyard count up to 33 violet ones. Minor flooding on S Branch Raritan throught the town yesterday. Event total so far 3.92"
3/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.12 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Looks like the Ornery Storm may have ended. Last measurable at 8 PM, last drizzle ended before midningt. Ides of March calendar day precip 0.25", temp 41.2/46.2 = 43.7F. 4 day event total 4.04". Heard first spring peepers last evening...maybe they were waiting for EDT.
3/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Spring is bustin' out all over. With a warm sunny day, 2 dozen lawn crocus bloomed, and first 2 forsythia flowers peeked out, peepers again in the evening. 3/16 temp 41.6/63.9 = 52.8 F. Afternoon RH fell to 18% despite damp ground. Some frost this morning with low of 33.6 F. South Branch Raritan at High Bridge, while still high (> 80 percentile) has returned close to level before rain event.
3/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A pleasant broken record, Spring is bustin' out all over! Bright sun all day yesterday, high over 20 C! 33.6/68.2 = 50.9 F. A few more forsythia flowers opened, I'll bet the whole side of the house will burst today. Lawn crocus count, 36 front, 43 back. Two days of golfers on the course. Ground not as mooshy; yesterday RH was measured at a suspect low of 12% in the afternoon. Sump pump in cellar slowing down a bit, though the neighbor across the street's is still running every 90 seconds, and the road up the hill still has water flowing across as the ridge drains. ISS (International Space station) is visible in the evening for the next week or so. 2 Tonight; low from nnw to 20 degrees above the NNE horizon at 7:24 to 7:28 PM, then from wnw horizon to 37 degrees in west at 9 PM. Spectacular crescent moon after sunset last night with Venus below and to the left.
3/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another beauty, broke 70! 34.7/70.2 = 52.5 F. Front lawn crocus count reached 39 before White Tail Lawn Service began trimming them out. Fortunately they refuse to work on the rapidly budding daffodils. Saw ISS twice last night (with musical accompaniment by the peepers), a very nice pass this evening from 7:48 to 7:53, moving from NW horizon to above the north star Polaris, and on to the ESE horizon.
3/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Boy, it's going to be tough to go back to spring when this streak ends. Mostly sunny yesterday except for lots of persistant contrails. 39.0/73.2 = 56.1 F. Fantastic ISS pass yesterday evening, tonight's is almost as good from 8:12 to 8:17 WNW horizon -> 43 degrees in SW -> SSE Horizon. More goldfinches at feeder including some yellowing males. Only a few forsythia branches flowered out. Front lawn crocus fighting back from White Tail mowing, back up to 41.
3/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another incredible 25 degree above normal summerlike day. 42.1/75.2 = 58.7 F. Still draining the ridge from last rain event, but South Branch Raritan is back down to where it was before the big storm, below 80th percentile of flow. Water still running across the road up the hill. South slope daffodils and Hyacinths will bloom today. First day with no heat or woodstove fire to take off the morning chill of the season.
3/22/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overpowering smell of spring rain outside. 4th straight day above 70 degrees yesterday 45.9/75.4 = 60.7 avg! Forsythia bloomed 90% yesterday as well as miniature daffs. Saw 3 White Breasted Nuthatches at feeder for the first time ever yesterday, only one at a time in last 4 years of Feederwatch. South Branch Raritan at lowest level in 12 days, which is a good thing if 1+ inch of rain falls tonight. 52 degrees and no precip at 7 AM; there were a few (very few) raindrops overnight.
3/23/2010 7:00 AM 1.49 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Showery rain all day. Thunderstorms 5-7 PM with heaviest rain (0.63" 4-7PM). 2 consecutive power outages 11PM-12:30AM. A few downpours, but generally light rain. 54.5/57.9 = 56.2 average. Still no heat needed but started a small fire in woodstove to take off damp chill in the evening. STanding water on lawn during heaviest rain, but no flooding, South Branch Raritan appears to be cresting now about a foot below flood stage.
3/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Missed most of the showers yeserday except for some that formed overhead between 3 and 4:30 PM. 44.2/57.2 = 50.7 avg. Temp dropped and wind picked up after 10 PM. 4 Yellow Daffodils opened yesterday. Had nice closeup view of an Eastern Bluebird in backyard. Peepers very loud last night.
3/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Nice sunny day, well above normal again. 42.8/63.9 = 53.4 avg. Water still draining across road with moderately active sump pumps.
3/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.11 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Warm yesterday 34.5/68.4 = 51.5 avg; but it looks like the warm streak is over, 41 and dropping at obs time.Light rain overnight .01" befor 1 AM, .07" 1-4, .03" 4-7 AM. No precip at obs time, odd looking sky with long streaky layers, with high velocity scud beneath.
3/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 No rain yesterday, 32/59 (both midnights) = 44 avg. This morning is first time below freezing since March 8th; 25.7 at 7 AM. Reached 52 yesterday afternoon, in sunshine, so not a bad day. Forecast of 1 to 2 inches of rain coming up will not be good news for the already saturated ground and swelled rivers :( South Branch Raritan above 80th percentile of flow for date, but of more concern is the Passaic Basin in NE NJ.
3/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 One more rain free day..26.1/51.3 = 38.7 avg. Water has stopped running across the road above my location...temporarily. Nice article in the Courier News about Dr Robinson today. Hyacinths blooming.
3/29/2010 7:05 AM 1.08 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Rainy overnight (started 8:18 PM), heaviest (0.78") 11 PM-3 AM, only 0.08" since. Light rain ongoing at obs time, 50.7 F. Yesterday cool and cloudy 29.1/49.5 = 39.3 avg. Fist mass collection of blackbirds; 24 grackles, with 5 Red Wings. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge at record level for date, but still 1.7 ft below flood stage. Spruce Run reservoir stopped 128 mgd release at 8 PM last night just as rain started, rain has refilled it to over 100% full.
3/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.26 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Much less rain than anticipated so far; thank goodness. Only moderate period was from 11AM-2PM (0.15"), off and on rain otherwise, though raining harder at obs time. 3/28 temp 48.2/58.3 = 53.3 F. Big gap between rain slugs has kept Raritan within it's banks. Event total so far 1.34".
3/31/2010 7:00 AM 1.41 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Looks like most of the rain has ended, partly sunny and 43.9 F at 7 AM. This was wettest of the 3 days. 39.7/48.2 = 44.0 avg. Thought I saw a few wet snowflakes mixed in during the afternoon, but was never able to confirm with enough confidence to report a trace. 3 day event total (since 8:18 PM Sunday) 2.75". Looking forward to the next few days to dry out. Saw that Dr Robinson reported this has been the wettest 12 months in NJ history. Amen!!Peepers active all night despite cold.

Tomorrow AM see ISS pass (with 6 crew) low in southeast 6:07 to 6:12 AM, followed by Space Shuttle launch (7 crew)at 6:21 AM; if clear enough last few minutes of Main Engine flight my be visible low in southeast 6:28-6:30 AM.

Clouds cleared long enough to glimpse Venus and Mercury in the evening, but wiped out chance to view shuttle launch from here, Peepers seem to be getting quieter, maybe it was just the chill of this morning, Forsythia beginning to leaf out.

4/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A sprinkle around 8:15 AM, then a light shower from 9:45 to 10:15 AM. Downright hot...54.7/85.5 = 70.1 avg! Violets exploded open everywhere yesterday, peepers still all night long. Had to get window fans up to help cool the house overnight. Last evening clear for a perfect view of Venus and Mercury.

Sump pump still running, but slower; the neighbor's cycle has increased from 1:37 to 2:58 since the rain ended.

4/14/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 It tried real hard to rain yesterday...sprinkles from 10:30 AM to after 3 PM, but the green goo (50% pollen/50% water) never made it to a hundredth. 40.0 (midnight)/55.9 F. Crabapple fully bloomed. Some car frost and light fog this morning. Heat would have gone on for the first time since April 1 this morning at 5 AM, but I built a quick hot fire in the woodstove and forstalled it for a day.

6/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 That was the big frontal rain? Time to start watering the veggies full time. My lawn is in good shape because I cut it at 3"; all the neighbors who buzzcut their lawns are already brown.

7/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Will file first drought impact report today. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge at lowest level since Oct 2009. Spruce Run feeder Mulhockaway Creek, lowest since Oct 08, Spruce Run lowest since Sept 08. Hunterdon Cty groundwater lowest since 08 as well, one site approaching record low. However NJWSA reservoirs in good shape; Spruce Run 92% full, Round Valley 99%. SR releasing 92 Mgd, Round Valley 50 Mgd (Million Gallons/day) Watering veggies on rotating basis, grass frying. 0.15" in last 17 days. (Edit- actual SR release is probably > 100 Mgd, increase in rate was made ~ 8 AM on July 3, actual amount won't be updated till Tuesday)
7/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 South Branch Raritan now at lowest level since Oct 2008, less than 20th percentile. South Branch Watershed Association macroinvertebrate monitoring taking place in High Bridge today, flow is ~ 35 cfs (30 day precip 2.91"). Last year (Jun 27) flow was 104 cfs, 30 day precip 7.32".
7/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Getting nasty out there. I refuse to dump thousands of gallons of drinking water on my lawn, so it's toast. Literally. Not a drop of rain at any NJ CoCoRaHS station in July so far; longest rain free stretch since mid January.
7/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Not a drop of rain here in 8 days, only 0.15" since June 17, combined with extreme heat is becoming quite serious. Unwatered fields are tinder dry, winebrries shriveling up. Using lots of water to save veggies, but even they are unhappy with the heat. Overnight low 79.2 F, 62% RH, DP 65.
7/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Now 0.15" in 21 days. July 1-6 longest stretch without even a trace in the state since NJ CoCoRaHS went online in Autumn '08 exceeding 5 day revious Aug 18-22 2008. July 1-7 tied for longest in NJ with only a trace with Jan 10-16 this year. I suspect there will be some measurable in the 7/8 reports. Large swath from Hunterdon to Monmouth/Ocean has had 0.00" to 0.21" in 21 days. Much cooler low this AM (72.1 F) but much more humid (87%)DP 68.0
7/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Yesterday's showers succeeded in missing us, now 10 days without a drop of rain, 0.04" in 17 days, 0.15" in 22 days.
7/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.30 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Finally some blessed rain. Had to wait all day, and it came down too fast (0.26" 8:00-8:30 with trw-) but at least it wet the ground so if we get downpours today some will be absorbed rather than run off. Another 0.04" before 1 AM, and a little drizzle around 6 AM as well, but no precip by 7 AM when it was 73.4 F, 92% RH.
7/11/2010 8:00 AM 1.44 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Heavy downpour with a little thunder: 1.15" from 8:30-9:30 AM, then only 0.29" through 12:30 PM. That was it for the day. 2 day total was 1.74", that's also the total for the month of July. Much nicer this morning 71.6 F, 83% RH at 8 AM.

Only 0.01" during calendar day 7/13. Moderate rain at obs time.
7/15/2010 7:00 AM 2.45 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 What a soaking! 2.34" fell between 8:30 AM and noon, an average of 0.67"/Hr. Submitted several sig wx reports. 12 hour total from 2:40 AM to 2:40 PM was 3.72". Only the preceeding dryness prevented South Branch of Raritan from flooding; as it was, reached highest level since the beginning of May. 70.2 F. 94% at 7 AM. Quite a turnaround, a week ago I was filing Drought Impact Reports with not a drop of rain through the 9th, now July total is 5.70", already above normal for the entire month with 16 days to go!

7/17/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A trace in gauge, possibly from line that collapsed just to our west last evening. Katydids noticed last night, quite a few, heard them 2 days ago at 200' lower elevation. Still a few lightning bugs at night, but not the large number of weeks ago. Lots of cicadas in the daytime
7/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 With the first katydid on the 16th this year, compared to previous years when I wrote it down: 2000 8/1, 2006 7/26, 2007 7/19. 4 hot days since the last rain and the lawn is looking dry again.
7/19/2010 7:45 AM 0.35 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Heavy TRW underway at 7AM with lots of cloud to ground lightning; too dangerous to access gauge. Waited till after the bulk of the rain from this cell had passed at 7:45. Few stratiform drops at that time 70.9 F, 90% RH.
7/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Leftover morning sprinkles and few drops from TRW to north about 6PM and to south about 8PM added up to .01"

Friend reported downed trees in heavy wind in Raritan Boro, Somerset County, a bit later, possibly as this thunderstorm collapsed (microburst?). Thunder through 8 PM, lighting through midnight. Not sure when the other 0.04" occurred. HEAVY dew this morning 66.6F 93% at 6AM, didn't check temp at obs time, watching Tour de France.

7/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.17 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A few raindrops here and there, now and then, during the day. All the measurable fell in a brief windy thunderstorm just after 11PM.
7/25/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Just a trace in a Midnight Moonlit Thundershower. Great evening catching the balloons from the NJ Festival of Ballooning yesterday. Consulted the NJ Wx and Climate network website before leaving home and prepicked the balloon path based on Wind Speed map. Worked out great, about 40 landed all around us at RVCC. Thanx Dave and Mat!!

7/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.48 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 LOUD thunderstorm woke me up this morning with 0.48" in 20 minutes from 6:20 to 6:40 AM.
7/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.62 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Heavy downpour 1:25 to 1:40 PM, 0.62". Thunder from 1:30- 2:00 PM. Monthly total now 8.57", all after the 7 days in the beginning with not a drop in the entire state.
7/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 First day with no AC since July 3. Feels great!! What a wet month in Hunterdon County, the 5 or 6 highest totals in the state. 10.06"; 8.57" (mine); 8.56", 8.05", 7.56", 6.96". Lowest station in Hunterdon with complete record was 3.39" in Flemington. Lowest total in NJ for station with complete record is Sea Isle City, Cape May: 1.17". The range from high to low in Hunterdon (6.97") was higher than the verifiable total precip for the whole month anywhere else in the state!

8/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Thunder from 12:30 to 4 PM, but only 0.02" in that time. Looks like lightning bugz are winding down, only saw two, looking hard last evening. Lots of cicadas in the daytime and katydids at night though keeping the season sounding summery. Hummingbird feeders have almost constant activity, and goldfinches devouring the sunflower seeds.
8/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00
8/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Cloudy and humid this morning 73.6 F, 86%. Cicadas loud already at 6:30 AM. Radar indicated sprinkles did not make it to the ground this morning, I looked closely. Despite heavy July rain here, South Branch Raritan below median for last 9 days.
8/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Nothin but dew on the gauge again this morning. South Branch Raritan back down to 20% median levels.
8/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A promising precipitation day delivered squat. It's getting dry again, started trickle watering the veggies. Only 0.02" in the last week. Only 4 NJ CoCoRaHS stations have over 1 inch in August. Drought watch issued for 5 NE NJ counties.
8/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A few lightning bugs still hanging on. Many female fights at the hummingbird feeder. AC accidently went on for a half hour yesterday before I shut it down for a rest; overnight had the fans blowing in that beautiful cool air. Dew point still too high to open the cellar windows; hope with afternoon mixing it drops a little more to get some fresh air in there.

8/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Not a drop of rain in a week, and only 0.02" in the last 10 days. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge at lowest level since Oct 2008.
8/10/2010 8:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Well, can't say we haven't had a drop of rain in 8 days; we had a few drops. Nowhere near enough to make it to the inner tube. No lightning bugs at all last night; last sighting Aug 6th, so it appears their season is over.
8/11/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A few drops yesterday morning...then more dry.

8/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.30 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A nice gentle rain. Not much, but almost all was absorbed with very little runoff. Only a trace after 1 AM. South Branch Raritan barely rose at all, still below 20th percentile. Now 0.32" in 14 days. Yet another Perseid meteor shower peak occurred on the other side of the clouds :(

8/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Extreme dryness continues. Started watering the veggies again despite forecast for the upcoming week. My first rule of forecasting, until a pattern is broken, assume the pattern still is in force, and the pattern has been dry....
8/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.47 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another gentle soaking in rain. Still less than an inch for the month (0.79"), but none has been wasted as runoff. South Branch Raritan crept above 20th percentile of flow for the first time in 10 days. I can always tell when the dewpoint is > 70, since my cellar windows are covered with condensation (cellar temp 68-69F). For the summer (June 1-today), of stations reporting every day (77 days) or with 73 or more that accounted for every day with multiday reports, range is from 3.81" in Ocean to 12.56" in Hunterdon. The 0.89" calendar day total was more than the rest of August combined. The final one occurred just before 7PM followed by the most intense rainbow I've seen in years, with even a faint (reversed color) secondary bow above. South Branch Raritan above median and mean flow for the first time if 40 days (and nights :) ), peaked above 80% of median flow for the date but is back on the way down. At 7AM, clear 62.2F, 95% RH.

9/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another hot day, with a sunny morning before the outflow cirrus and AC from Earl moved in for a spectacular sunset. Surface dryness continues to accelerate with hot temps, sunny skies, and only 0.01" in last 10 days. Sure am glad we replaced our central AC 2 years ago with a far more efficient system!
9/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sigh...another day with zippo. Passed througha brief tropical shower just west of the Delaware Water Gap about 1:15 PM, but no evidence of even a drop at home, not even drop prints in the windshield dust. Mulhockaway Creek (Western feeder stream to Spruce Run Reservoir) at record low for 4 days now (33 Yr PoR), South Branch Raritan @ High Bridge below median flow 41 of last 45 days.
9/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 South Branch Raritan in High Bridge at lowest level in 2 years (and 1 day) since 9/4/2008. Local foliage crisping up nicely. Made second batch of Tomato Sauce yesterday.
9/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Third day in a row with no AC, and no basement dehumidifier. Good for the electric bill, but more water trickled into the garden to keep the veggies alive. Firing up the smoker now for our Holiday Turkey. 2 hours meteor observing this morning under crystal clear, crisp skies, only 6 meteors, and six satellites. Katydids were silent, too cool for them this early in the season.
9/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A beautiful but dry Labor Day. Now 0.01" in 14 days. Only 28 of 147 NJ CoCoRaisins reports have included measureable precip this month, only 7 over 0.10". Those 7 were all along the coast from Earl.

9/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another dry day, but no heat or AC; got first cord of wood delivered for the heating season. Turned into a beautiful morning for meteor observing; a busy first hour from 3:05 to 4:20 AM (16/Hr), normal rates after that (4/Hr). Wildlife report: a few cicadas during the day, 2 praying mantis spotted, 2 female hummingbirds fighting over the feeder. Too cool for katydids at night. Saw a red fox a block from home on the way back from the observatory at quarter to 6. 2.09" of precip since July 30 (43 days). Spruce Run Reservoir below 2/3 of capacity.
9/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 2 pink lines of clouds approaching from the west, and all this green and yellow stuff on radar likewise... I'm tempted to keep irrigating the garden so as to not irritate the cosmic weather muffin. 17 days with not a drop of rain, 0.01" in 19 days. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge at lowest level since Oct 7 2005. Edit 7:18 AM EDT (after obs time) drops of water falling from the sky!!
9/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.43 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Most of the rain came between 8 and 10 AM (0.40"). Only a trace after 1 AM with some drizzle, and clear skies and stars by 5:30 AM allowed some dew to form this morning. South Branch Raritan has responded slowly, still rising at 7AM as rainfall in the northern reaches of the watershed filter down, still unlikely to reach median levels. Spruce Run Reservoir continues to drop; a brief flat spot in the decline between 10 AM and noon.
9/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 The big thunderstorms passed east and west of us between 6 and 7 PM, just a shower here despite all the rumbling. Another dewy morn, with light fog. 30 day total 2.21".
9/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Refreshing day yesterday, very fall like. A few maples have started to put on the cloak of autumn. No cicadas heard for several days now, and too cool for katydids at night. South Branch Raritan still draining some from Tuesday's thunderstorm to north. 30 day precip down to 1.74"

9/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Not sure if this is related to the dryness, or part of the normal cycle, but up at the NJAA observatory this morning, every time a breeze blew, it sounded like a hailstorm with all the acorns falling. I've never experienced that before. Certainly an above normal year for acorn production (which is cyclical)

9/20/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A few raindrops about 8 PM. After eying the radar, I was looking for them, otherwise never would have noticed. With little rain (Sept 1.09", 30d 2.34") and 16 days of no dehumidifier and only 3 hours of AC in that time, cellar sump is bone dry.
9/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Coldest morning in a long time, at 7 AM: 46.8F, 79% RH. Dew on cars, not frost, under clear skies. Pulled off tomatos with any red at all to prevent cold induced flavor loss.
9/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 About 10 degrees warmer in temp and dewpoint this morning, still crystal clear. Sept precip 1.09", 30 day 1.45". 90 day and longer periods still above normal, 2009 27.81", 365 day 52.24". Astronomical Autumn begins 11:09 PM tonight, Full Harvest Moon at 5:17 AM tomorrow morning. Interesting note: South Branch Raritan (Gage 1.2 miles away) went up by only 0.84" during the storm (my precip 0.81"), and has returned to the previous very low (below 20% median)level by this morning. No sign of drainage from upstream yet.
9/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.81 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Very windy, wet thunderstorm last evening! Thunder began 6:30, at exactly 7:00 PM wind started up with a few raindrops and lightning, then heavy downpour with 0.76" between 7:30 and 8:00. Thunder and rain ended by ~ 8:30, followed by the Harvest Moon...I even woke up at 5:17 AM to see the moment of the full moon. What a geek! Largest rain eveny since Aug 23/24. Sept tot 1.90", 30 day 1.91". At 7 AM, clear with very light fog, 61.7 F. Interesting note: South Branch Raritan Gage 1.2 miles from my site went up by 0.84", my precip was 0.81". It has already returned to the previous very low (<20% of median flow) level with no sign of drainage from upstream.
9/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 It took 17 hours for the rain (~.6 " upstream) to reach the High Bridge Gage on the South Branch Raritan, briefly causing the level to rise above median level. But only for 4 hours. Overcast and humid this morning.
9/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Well, the 16 day streak of no AC, and 26 day streak of no cellar dehumidifier ended yesterday with the heat and dew point of 70+.
9/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 I certainly hope the promised rain over the next few days occurs. 4 days after a half inch in the basin, the South Branch of tne Raritan is back to levels not seen since 2005. Spruce Run Reservoir approaching 55% of capacity and even Round Valley is under 88%. And I realize that this part of the state is far better off than much of the rest. Hummingbirds and cicadas still active yesterday, and katydids last night.
9/27/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A few dozen raindrops between 3 PM and 3 AM. Since then, downpours have thoroughly wet the inner tube of the gauge.
9/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.47 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Not exactly the threatened heavy rain, but appreciated nonetheless. 7A-1P 0.11", 1-7P 0.21", 7P-1A .07", 1-7A .08". No runoff, puddles only briefly on impervious surfaces. Sept total 2.37", still well below normal. Brief power hit overnight, but unlikely it was weather related.
9/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Despite all the hoopla, only a brief afternoon shower. 3 day event total 0.51", Sept total 2.41". We'll see if the forecast deluge happens Thursday... Statewide CoCoRaisins reported 0.41" to 2.47" for the 3 day event.
9/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.72 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Rain finally began around 5 AM, heavy for a while. Light rain, 66.6F, 92% RH at 7 AM. Before this event, only 4 or 5 NJ sites were above normal for Sept; we'll see how many are after!
