I'm reporting the melted value in the 'biscuit' cut on the snowboard. Hey, using a 1 lb coffee can to punch through the snow instead of the outer gauge worked great! Thank that guy that mentioned it at the training. It removes the worry that I'll crack or chip the polycarbonate in icy conditions, and is easy to melt down the snow -right on a burner on low.

1/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.33 3.1 0.34 3.0 M Overcast, 30.1° 24hr: 28.3/35.5° I see the value in reporting snow depth immediately after the snow stops. I measured depth & SWE from the snowboard at noon but only compressed the snow in the gauge. It was sunny most of the afternoon & precip returned @ 7pm as a mix of snow & sleet. Without knowing the "pre-compression" value, I would have under reported new snowfall depth by 0.3"

The snowboard was blown clean and the existing snow was blown around. No place to "stick" the new snow, so the 0.02 reported is SWE from the gauge. Given the wind, probably under reporting.

2/8/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.5 0.09 Sunny, 16.0° 24hr: 14.0/31.5° Was surprised when 'cutting the biscuit' for SWE Monday that the snow is still so fluffy. It's been on the ground 5 days -but temps have been consistently cold. Approx 80% of ground still covered; 0.5" is an average and core sample was taken at a site with approx average depth. Note: we are not part of the Pompton River basin, but drain northward into the Wallkill River system.

MIght be under reported since snow depth on snowboard was less than the average; and snow "rooster tailed" out of the gauge. This was an all snow event; wind was not an issue until 10pm; lost power for approx one hour at 1am. 2 day storm total = 12.2"
2/12/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Sunny, 22.9° 24hr: 19.6/39.8° Yesterday's report reminded me that the 12.2" was the deepest single day's total in two years of reporting. The winter before was a lot of ice events. I am grateful for the tips on buying a second outer gauge for easy morning swap-outs; and for the coffee can + paint scraper tip for jamming out core sample for SWE. Was amazed 10.8" of snow fit in the 1lb coffee can! Easy to melt on the range top AND no worry about chipping polycarbonate gauge. Thanks!

2/22/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 1.29 Sunny, 20.7° 24hr: 20.0/44.8° Took advantage of yesterday's above 40° temps to auger a hole in pond. Happy to see four fish approach hole, given how constant and deep the ice coverage has been this winter.
2/23/2010 8:00 AM 0.15 0.9 0.14 6.5 M Lite mixed precip (sleet & rain), 31.9° 24hr: 20.9/44.3° At 9pm although we did not observe anything falling, there was a layer of ice on the patio. Approx 10pm it began snowing, but turned over to this mix during the night. Snow appears to have compressed by 1/2 by obs
2/24/2010 7:30 AM 0.94 4.2 0.81 10.3 M Overcast, 32.2° 24hr: 31.5/35.3° Quite a mix with this one! And a challenge getting an accurate SWE from the gauge: had to melt down the accumulated ice all around the inside of the gauge. Was surprised at the big difference between it (.94) and the SWE from the snowboard (.81") with this storm.
2/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.26 1.3 0.16 9.5 M Snowing, 32.3° 24hr: 32.2/42.3° Was a mix all night and didn't turn over to accumulating snow until around daybreak. Very wet, the snow made a 3/4" wall on top of the rim of the gauge; used the paint-scraper that I use to slip under the can for the snowboard core sample to press down on gauge rim to determine what goes in & what falls out. Snowboard sample almost slushy snow.
2/26/2010 7:20 AM 2.29 16.1 M 23.0 M Fine snow, 23.4° 24hr: 21.1/36.2° Impossible to get a gauge reading; the storm kept "capping" the gauge. Cleaned it off 3 times yesterday during the storm before giving up. Core sample melting, will report whatever value comes from the snowboard as the gauge amount; will fill the field with T for now. 23" total depth is an average; lowest spot is 20" & deeper areas up to my hips. First storm in the 2 winters I've been reporting that I had to ditch my 16" metal ruler for a measuring tape! Haven't had snow like this in a while....
2/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.28 3.9 0.30 26.5 M What?? Could it be the sun? Mostly sunny, 29.7° 24hr: 23.6/40.5° Bands of heavy snow continued thru the night. Both the gauge & snowboard had a layer of ice at the bottom due to sleet mix yesterday morning which compressed the snowpack a bit; but 26.5" is still an impressive snowfall when seed starting begins next week!
2/28/2010 7:30 AM 0.04 0.2 M 25.0 M Snowing --AGAIN, 29.9° 6 straight days of snow. 24hr: 23.0/46.3° This snow is very light & fluffy, laying on a crust layer that I couldn't punch through with the tape measure; and the snowcover is way too deep to measure with my metal 15" ruler, so snow depth is approximate. It is so deep that our VERY determined dog was unable to chase squirrels -all 45lbs of her disappeared except for the tip of her nose after her first pounce into the unshoveled area yesterday morning.
3/1/2010 7:30 AM 0.01 0.2 0.02 21.0 M Partly cloudy, windy, 33.3° 24hr: 29.5/40.9° Snow came in two major bands, the morning one completely melted during the mid-day warm up; the afternoon one remained measurable this morning, despite the wind and its extremely fluffy texture. Yesterday I poked holes in several representative areas with a steel pry bar so I can insert the tape measure at obs time. When it shrinks back to 15" I'll be able to use the metal ruler again!
3/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.5 M Sunny, 31.9° 24hr: 26.3/46.6° Snowpack getting down to the point where hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get back to measuring it with the 15" metal ruler instead of the tape measure. Can Spring be far behind?
3/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.15 1.5 M 17.5 M Snowing, 32.8° 24hr: 26.3/47.7° The texture of the snowpack has become more sodden, so there must have been rain at some point before the snow started. Measurements are not rounded.
3/4/2010 8:30 AM T T M 16.0 M Mostly cloudy, 33.1° 24hr: 30.1/39.8° The "T" resulted from the snow that continued for a short time past yesterday's obs time, and flurries late yesterday afternoon.
3/5/2010 7:30 AM T T M 14.5 M Extremely fine snow flurries, 32.9° 24hr: 29.7/47.5° The reported 14.5" snowpack is an average of samples ranging from 13 - 15.5" - 100% coverage. There is a note in my garden journal to muck out the pond 1st week of March; this year we can't even SEE the pond under all the snow!
3/6/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.5 M Bright sun, 26.5° Lots of birdsong. 24hr: 21.1/49.9° Snowpack holding at 14.5" & 100% coverage. In the small 6" strip of bare earth along the foundation I saw the green shoots of a patch of crocus. The flower bud is still tight and close to the ground. Ah, early Spring.....
3/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 2.51 Sunny, 33.7° 24hr: 26.6/53.3° With snowpack down to 14" I tried to take a core sample; even with the metal edge of the coffee can driving through the layers, a layer of ice was still visible at the bottom of the hole. The SWE is therefore greater than the reported 2.51"
3/8/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 3.54 Sunny, 34.6° 24hr: 33.5/54.0° Cleaned snow off the pond and opened up the augered hole again; there were two dead fish but seven living ones. I'm happy any made it through this prolonged winter with solid ice cover so long. Will add SWE later.
3/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.0 M Sunny, 40.9° 24hr: 34.7/56.7° Average snowpack depth: 12" w/ 100% coverage, although paths and shoveled areas are getting wider each day. Perfect weather to get psyched for Springfest, the annual garden show at the Sussex County Fair Grounds greenhouses. Begins Thursday & runs through the weekend. Can't wait!
3/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.5 M Sunny, 31.1° 24hr: 27.9/58.3° Average snowpack depth dropped to 10.5" w/ 100% coverage. Even with a dry week, yesterday morning the basement pump kicked on --just from snowmelt. And a redwinged blackbird on the feeder; that for us is the real first sign of Spring!
3/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Overcast, 41.7° 24hr: 35.9/58.5° Saw some flying insects yesterday. Without any rain in days the basement pump is on every 8 -10 minutes. Not looking forward to rain on top of snowmelt.
3/12/2010 7:30 AM T 0.0 M 6.0 M Overcast with occasional very light drizzle, 37.6° 24hr: 36.9/53.8° Six days in a row with temps reaching the 50°s is creating a nice, slow, steady melt of snowpack. Glad we did not get yesterday's forcast rain. Still 100% coverage w/ average depth of 6.0" (samples from 5" -> 9.5"). Bare ground is gaining only right next to buildings (earlier crocus siting!), driveways, and around large tree trunks.
3/13/2010 7:30 AM 0.76 0.0 M 4.0 M Rain, 36.0° 24hr: 37.7/53.8° Needed YakTrak for the first time this winter; the path to the gauge was water over compressed ice -dicey to walk on. 4.0" snowdepth is an average of 1.5" - 6.4" samples. Both pumps now running in basement.
3/14/2010 9:10 AM 3.89 0.0 M 2.0 M Bands of heavier rain, 41.6° 24hr: 36.0/41.8° This rain made a big dent in our snow cover: average depth 2" w/ 50% coverage now. Emergency sirens going off all evening & again this morning; these conditions at this time of year is a busy time for our volunteer firemen pumping out flooded basements. Hope power holds so our 2 pumps can keeping working.
3/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.33 0.0 M T M Overcast, 37.4° 24hr: 36.9/41.8° Snowpack down to approx 20% in unshoveled areas with large piles remaining where it had been plowed/shoveleld. Both pumps continue non-stop. Family commuting into NYC have a rough time this morning with Route 23 closed due to flooding. 4.98" total to obs today. Fire Department came last night to pump out neighbor's basement with large hoses; our basement clean-up continues here today...
3/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.09 0.0 M T M Sun through thick layer of high clouds, 40.1° 24hr: 36.5/41.0° The crocus and snowdrops will surely open in today's sunshine. "T" reported for remaining snow is really now just a trace in unshoveled areas; where the snow had been plowed or shoveled, the piles are 18-20" deep with run-off continuing from this melt & pumping from flooded basements.
3/17/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Sunny with a frost, 30.1° 24hr: 28.4/61.1° Basement pump is down to pumping every six minutes instead of continually, thankfully. Snow only remains in piles and at the base of rockwalls.
3/18/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Sunny, 30.1° 24hr: 29.9/63.5° Our pond is now half ice-free and saw 9 surviving fish! During yard clean up saw the arial manuvers of two Coopers Hawks directly overhead. Basement pump still on.
3/19/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Hazy sun, 32.9° 24hr: 30.1/65.7° Spring bulbs exploded in yesterday's warmth. Snow is almost completely gone, with only small piles where the largest piles of plowed snow had been. Basement pump down to pumping once an hour. With other stations reporting spring peepers, better get to mucking out the pond -even though there is a huge 3" chunck of ice still occupying 1/3 of it!
3/20/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Sunny, 38.2° 24hr: 34.9/68.9° To honor the arrival of Spring, today I'll stop reporting "T" for snowfall depth; in my neighborhood the only place snow remains in small piles is on roadway corners, where the road department really plows up huge piles. Still no spring peepers!

Yesterday afternoon the pump was down to pumping every 45 minutes; we'll see if this 0.46" changes that....
4/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, windy, 37.6° 24hr: 35.8/55.6° A brutal day for da boys to be out on the lake for Opening Day of Trout Season. Perfect day to pot up seedlings -indoors!

4/12/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Sunny, 42.7° 24hr: 36.2/71.6° Nothing in the gauge this morning but the T occurred early evening when a few drops briefly fell. I guess it's time to put the inner tube and funnel back in the gauge; we'll still have frosts but hopefully no more hard freezes.

4/18/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Cloudy, 38.3° 24hr: 35.8/50.6° A brief, cold shower yesterday afternoon that sounded as if it were mixed with ice, although I couldn't see any pellets on the ground. Lasted only a few minutes.

Happy to see that almost all perennials survived the winter! Only damage was to snapped branches on woody perennials like butterfly bush. Although there certainly was a lot of snow, the low temperature for this winter was only 6.3° (1/30/10).
4/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 42.7° 24hr: 41.6/69.3° Continuing to pot up seedlings; running out of room indoors under lights. Soon it will be coldframes....

A half hour later the wind came up and a drop or two fell. At 2:38pm strong, cold wind and pounding large drops of rain, but it passed quickly. This morning there wasn't even a drop in the gauge.

4/29/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, 46.6° 24hr: 37.6 [yesterday am's reset]/56.9° The T was the accumulation of very brief intervals of a few rain drops falling throughout the day yesterday. Thankfully, it did not get as cold as forecast last nite.
4/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 56.9° 24hr: 45.4/67.9° Lilacs in bloom and toad tadpoles have hatched in our pond. Only 2.96" of rain during the month of April. Not that we couldn't use a "drying out period!"
5/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, warm, 63.7° 24hr: 51.7/77.9° It's going to be a real temptation not to set out plants today. Too early!! Must read prior entries in garden journal for cold snaps during May....
5/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Mostly cloudy, humid, 69.7° 24hr: 63.0/85.1° Seeds sown in veggie beds are up already; beginning to set out some of the cold tolerant perrenials.

5/4/2010 7:30 AM 0.20 M M M M Sunny, 54.9° 24hr: 52.6/74.7° Nice to have all that humidity depart. Maple trees beginning to drop their "helicopters."

5/6/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 61.6° 24hr: 47.2 (yesterday am's reset)/75.6° Time for a good "spring cleaning" of the inner gauge; this morning's catch was a thick goop comprised of the heavy dew + tons of pollen, and several maple tree seed 'helicopters!'
5/7/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Sunny, crisp morning, 49.3° 24hr: 45.5/73.8° Nothing in the gauge this morning; a brief shower yesterday between 9am-10am that didn't even wet the ground under the trees; reporting a T.
5/8/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 57.1° A few recent drops on the ground in open areas not under the trees.

5/14/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Overcast, 55.6° 24hr: 48.1/64.6° The 48.1 was yesterday morning's reset temp. It seemed warmer last night. And no heat cables!
5/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Beautiful, clear, crisp, sunny morning, 58.3° 24hr: 53.1/75.2° The 0.05" of rain in some showers yesterday morning. The rest of the day was just humid and warm; no storms here.
5/16/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Cloudy, 52.7° 24hr: 48.2/68.9° Yesterday was a great day for our lake Spring clean-up. Two community beds and one large oak barrel planted with cold-tolerant annuals; will wait another week to add the heat lovers! Tomatoes still 'parked' in our cold frame here...
5/17/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Partly cloudy, with sun dimly shinning through high cloud cover, 47.9° 24hr: 44.1/70.0° Yesterday was another good day for setting out plants; began bringing out some of the 'heat lovers.' But only in pots that I can carry back in if the temps dive! Not in open ground yet...
5/18/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 50.7° Rain started shortly after obs time; temps also dropping between obs time and reporting this morning. 24hr: 47.9 (yesterday's am reset)/72.9°

5/24/2010 7:30 AM 0.02 M M M M Overcast, 60.7° 24hr: 58.3/70.0° Late spring planting continues, despite clear evidence in my 10 year garden journal of plenty of years with "surprise temps" during the last days of May. Gardeners are such optimists!
5/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Overcast, fog, 59.9° 24hr: 57.8/74.0° Two days in a row with a gauge reading of 0.02" Bedroom A/C on last night for the uncomfortable humidity, not the temps.
5/26/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, warm, 66.2° 24hr: 59.9/82.4° Heavy condensation on gauge, plants, and glass surfaces.

5/28/2010 7:30 AM 0.26 M M M M Hazy sun, 55.1° 24hr: 50.8/83.0° Temps dropped like a stone yesterday afternoon. At 3:11pm distant thunder could be heard in the west; by 3:18 a few large drops of rain; at 3:25 cloud-to-ground lightning from a huge thunderhead in the west, with thunder 2 seconds later. Temperature fell 22° by 6pm. Almost all of the 0.26" of rain fell in one heavy burst between 6-7pm.
5/29/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 60.5° 24hr: 54.9/71.1° Bleeding hearts & Siberian iris are going by, dianthus and dutch iris beginning bloom. All varieties of lettuce greens bountiful. Sowed seed for "heat lovers" cukes, zukes, and pole beans.
5/30/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, crisp morning, with a light breeze, 65.7° All the humidity is gone. 24hr: 58.1/75.8° -although the high humidity made it seem a lot warmer than that. It got very dark here for a short while in the early evening, but except for a few large drops, the storm passed us by.
5/31/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 73.1° 24hr: 55.8/78.7° Total rain for May = 3.17" Given that Sussex County is called The Icebox of NJ (probably more for its ice harvesting industry instead of in a weather sense) I also care about temperature: during the month of May only one day below freezing (5/11), four with overnight temps in the 30°s, and the last being on 5/13. Lots of hummingbirds all over the honeysuckle vine; first of the dragonflies; and first monarch butterfly seen in the garden yesterday. One last batch of tadpoles remain in the pond. A pair of Carolina wrens made it through the winter and are raising chicks in the front patio garden!
6/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 71.5° 24hr: 63.2/86.9° Heavy rain all around us last night at approx 7pm; drove through heavy downpours in Franklin, the town next to us on the way home last night. But nothing here.
6/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Sunny, 65.7° 24hr: 55.1/81.9° Can't believe that we're leaving this perfect early summer weather for Yellowstone: with snow in the forecast this week and nightime temps back in the 30°s. The innkeeper says her crocuses are just going by! My neighbor will check the gauge every day & I'll report when we're back home.

Much weeding is in my future! Will send "fill in" daily gauge readings for the above period as soon as I get them from my neighbor.
6/13/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, humid, 68.4 24hr: 62.8/77.9° Noticed "heat lightning" (no rain; no thunder; no wind; no bolts; just the entire sky lighting up) for several minutes around 10pm.

6/24/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, dew, 73.6° 24hrs: 67.1/83.0°
6/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Hazy sun, 68.8° 24hr: 63.5/86.6° Rain came in one brief storm: at 1:26pm the skies darkened in the west, the wind came up with rolling thunder and initially heavy rain. It tapered off to moderate rain and was over in approx 15 minutes. Within minutes the sun was back out and there was no trace that it had ever rained on roadways, driveways, patios, etc. Very steamy. Didn't begin cooling off for several hours.
6/26/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 68.2° with heavy condensation, both on the inner and outer gauges. 24hr: 58.3/80.1° The nesting pair of Carolina wren on our patio are fledging their young. They actually seem to welcome the presence of our dog (who thankfully, knows the command "leave it!") as protection against roaming cats and squirrels. Interesting! Also, the last batch of tadpoles are getting quite big in the pond...
6/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 65.9° 24hr: 61.0/82.6° Hydrangea blooms shriveling and drooping downward. Veggie beds needed deep watering; parts of lawn in the sun are beginning to brown out. Also starting to water one year old transplants because ground in unmulched areas is getting very dry.
6/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy, hot, & humid, 76.0° 24hr: 66.1/83.5° Continuing to water veggies and only the flowers and transplants I consider "too important to loose." For the rest I'll hope for significant rain soon. Filed my first Drought Impact Report yesterday.
6/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.26 M M M M Mostly sunny with a few high, hazy clouds, 72.0° 24hr: 68.2/87.3° Almost all of the 0.26" of rain came in a heavy burst approx 2pm with only occasional brief showers on either side of it.
6/30/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Bright sun, clear air -a beautiful crisp morning, 58.5° 24hr: 54.0/82.3° Front came through without a drop; although the wind did pick up and the skies got dark. So many toadlets moving around in the lawn and gardens around the pond that the ground seemed to be moving!
7/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, crisp, 58.5° 24hr: 48.8/72.5° Continued dry; more watering of veggies & transplants needed. June 2010 total = 2.44" --a third of last June's rainfall total, 6.79" (well, 35.9%) No wonder we don't have a problem with gypsy moths this summer. They all drowned last June!
7/2/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 55.1° 24hr: 49.0/71.8° Continuing to water veggie beds and shrubs/plants < 1 year old. Trying to graciously accept defeat on everything else while awaiting significant rain.
7/3/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly sunny, with very thin, high, hazy clouds, 54.9° 24hr: 49.9°/76.5°Had to add water to the pond yesterday & unlike last year when I saw a bear using it regularly as his water source, I have not seen any large wildlife drinking from it this year. Just evaporation & lack of rain.
7/4/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 66.8° 24hr: 55.1/81.5° Lawn is browning; unwatered plants looking pretty shabby; flowers in pots and planters needing daily water.
7/5/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, with high, hazy, thin clouds, 69.8° 24hr: 59.9/87.3° Back to watering alternate beds of veggies and plants and adding 2 -3" of shredded leaves afterwards as mulch... Area streams are very low.

7/7/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 73.3° 24hr: 68.6/93.8° Local news reported that yesterday's 100° in Sussex broke a record for heat going back to 1999, saying that summer was exceptionally hot & dry and 2010 looks like "deja vu..."
7/8/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very hazy, 78.4° 24hr: 67.1/92.7°
7/9/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 72.5° 24hr: 67.9/85.5° With such an extended period with no rain in the gauge, this morning was a good opportunity to clean out the accumulated pollen, dust, and one brown, dead beetle stuck in the bottom of the inner tube!
7/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Overcast, 70.0° 24hr: 69.3/85.3° Yesterday there were several attempts at rain; the rain was so fine and shortlived that if I hadn't been outside and FELT it, I never would have known it had rained. The most successful attempt was 1:40pm when I could smell the rain, and see a few, fat drops on the patio, which evaporated almost immediately. The 0.05" in the gauge at 7am left dry ground under the maple trees. [7:40am note: while entering this report a steadier, heavier rain began falling with thunder to the west. Yippppeeee! Rain.]
7/11/2010 8:00 AM 1.57 M M M M Mostly cloudy, 68.4° 24hr: 62.6/75.8° The reported 1.57" occurred before noon yesterday, when I dumped the gauge and filed a Significant Weather Report. This morning's reading was only "T" -3 drops. Total for this storm: 1.57 + 0.05 from day before's report early morning hours = 1.62" of much needed rain.
7/12/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly sunny, with high, hazy clouds, 62.5° 24hr: 57.2/82.3° Hope to get out the second batch of lettuce seedlings (under shade cloth) today; the recent heat bolted the original sowing. Lots of tomato plants have lots of fruit but they're still all green so far.
7/13/2010 7:30 AM 0.05 M M M M Cloudy, 69.8° 24hr: 62.8/85.3° Disappointed the measurement only turned out to be 0.05". The darkening clouds yesterday afternoon and the distant thunder early evening made it look like we were going to get another significant rain. What arrived was wind, and brief, moderate rainfall, over in a few minutes.
7/14/2010 7:30 AM 0.23 M M M M Very light rain, 68.6° 24hr: 67.7/76.5° Rain must be ending because bumble bees are already at work in the garden.
7/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.12 M M M M Mostly cloudy, 68.7° 24hr: 65.7/74.7° Glad we held off and did not mow what was left of our lawn during the extended dry period. Waiting until after the 1.57" fell and the additional 0.40" we've gotten during the past 3 days is helping our lawn recover faster than neighboring lawns.

7/19/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 66.4° 24hr: 62.8/85.3° Using drip irrigation lines in veggie gardens and trying very hard not to do my usual mid-summer 'fine tuning' of perennials. The ground is just too dry.
7/20/2010 7:30 AM 0.69 M M M M Sunny, 68.6° 24hr: 65.9/83.0° Rain came in distinct rounds: 1st came right after reading the gauge for yesterday's report; began 7:49am & was over in 30 minutes (0.30"). Two afternoon bands just missed us. 8:15pm another round of heavy rain began (0.39" more).
7/21/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very hazy, still, 73.1° 24hr: 66.4/79.9° Yesterday harvested the 1st ripe tomato of the early variety; zucchini & cukes beginning to set fruit.
7/22/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Beautiful sunny morning, drier air, slight breeze, 69.8° 24hr: 63.9/84.4° Intense, heavy pockets of rain all around the county last night; none arrived here. The 0.02" came at the edge of a storm at 9:40pm; the edges of the high cumulous clouds passing by were very visible in the bright moonlight overhead.
7/23/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Overcast, 68.0° 24hr: 63.5/80.3° Our lake community's water company started water restrictions yesterday: no watering of established lawns and asking for renewed water conservation efforts.
7/24/2010 8:00 AM 0.35 M M M M Sunny, 75.1° 24hr: 67.9/80.5° Rain came in two batches: morning rain = 0.12" & quick, evening t-storm = 0.23" After tornado watch was posted we went outside to the back porch to observe the skies. Dark in the west & north with long, rumbling thunder and lots of C2C lightning. At 7:35pm the wind picked up & heavy rain began. Did not last long; we seemed to be on the edge of it. The storms passed to the north of us.
7/25/2010 7:30 AM 0.02 M M M M Mostly sunny with thin, high cirrus clouds, 74.3° 24hr: 67.9/86.6° Around midnight another big storm just missed us; nothing here except lots of intense far away C2C lightning.
7/26/2010 7:30 AM 0.65 M M M M Sunny, slight breeze, 61.9° 24hr: 59.9/86.4° Very heavy rain & wind yesterday beginning at 2pm: 0.39" in 17 minutes. In an hour it was almost completely over with 0.62" Only one roll of thunder at 2:28pm. July total = 3.75" rain so far.
7/27/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly sunny, 63.0° with heavy dew. 24hr: 57.6/78.7°
7/28/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 65.7° 24hr: 57.6/81.5° Harvest of zucchini, cukes, and tomatoes really coming in now; harvested garlic yesterday.
7/29/2010 7:30 AM 0.11 M M M M Mostly cloudy, 70.7° 24hr: 65.7/80.8° A few peaks of sun from the east.
7/30/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Sunny, 63.2° 24hr: 59.9/82.1° The reported "T" is most likely the "leftover" rain from the day before's rainfall amount, as the last few drops of rain were falling while going out to the gauge at 7:30am on 7/29/10 and the skies were beginning to clear.
7/31/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Gorgeous, clear, crisp morning, 65.0° 24hr: 53.5/76.9° Total rainfall for July for NJ-SS-7 = 3.86"
8/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 68.2° 24hr: 57.6/75.4° Nice to enjoy and day and evening outdoors without a/c! Sounds of ciccadids were the background to a wonderful midsummer night.
8/2/2010 7:30 AM 0.08 M M M M Partly cloudy, 65.3° 24hr: 61.4/73.6° Thunder rumbling throughout the early afternoon yesterday; all the storms passed to our south.

8/4/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 73.1° 24hr: 67.9/79.7° Rainfall amount the same as yesterday: a single drop. I didn't observe rain at any time, but the gauge is clear, so it doesn't appear to be condensation. It is extremely humid however.
8/5/2010 7:30 AM 0.01 M M M M Partly cloudy, very humid, 75.1° 24hr: 71.8/84.4° Cicadas singing loudly this morning.
8/6/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, humid, 71.3° 24hr: 68.0/83.7° Several times yesterday afternoon it looked like we were going to get rain: the skies darkened and the wind came up. But it remained dry here.
8/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Beautiful clear, crisp morning, 67.0° 24hr: 54.0/81.5° Front came through yesterday afternoon and last night was the first night in a long time that we could sleep without A/C. Nice hearing the kaydids!
8/8/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 65.7° 24hr: 57.4/77.6° Besides the night time katydids, additional signs of approaching Fall: migrating grosbeak feeding in the mulberry tree yesterday morning and a bear in our garbage can last night.
8/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 72.2° 24hr: 65.7/82.3° Had to clean the gauge again yesterday; dry weather is accumulating a brown layer of dust/pollen on the bottom -another sign of lack of rain.
8/10/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Overcast, very humid, 70.0° 24hr: 69.3/86.2° The reported "T" was exactly two drops of rain that appeared to occur right before obs time; rain drops on patio was already evaporating. A few more rain drops fell on my way back in. Grass making a crunching sound when walked on.
8/11/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Cloudy haze, 68.9° 24hr: 65.7/84.4° Reported "T" even though there was nothing left in the gauge this morning other than condensation because I saw a few more drops fall after yesterday morning's reading. Very dry.
8/12/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 68.6° 24hr: 68.4/85.0° Wind beginning to rustle the leaves in the trees; looking very promising for much needed rain. Birch trees leaves are curling and crisping as are perennials like astilbes. Ironic that the June/July issue of Horticulture ran an article suggesting the value of brown plants! I'm sure THIS isn't what they had in mind!
8/13/2010 8:00 AM 0.30 M M M M Overcast, 62.8° 24hr: 62.3/69.8° It seemed like it was "raining" for several hours yesterday morning before the first drops actually hit the ground at 11:43am. Thankfully, it was a gentle rain, so most of the 0.30" was absorbed and did not run off. Still running quite a deficit; only 0.39" total rain to date in August. We need a tropical system....
8/14/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Rippled overcast, 62.6° 24hr: 58.9/76.5° Thankfully there was a break in the clouds last night & was able to get out on the lake in my kayak to watch 'leftover' Persieds. There were a couple of really good ones!
8/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 66.2° 24hr: 60.5/75.1° Drip irrigation of veggies continuing. Everything else is crispy. Halfway through and the total rainfal received this month = 0.39"
8/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.60 M M M M Light drizzle, 67.7° 24hr: 63.5/70.0° The 0.60" rainfall total is not rounded. Battling chipmunks for the ripe beefstake tomatoes. They are particularly fond of 'Charlie's Mortgage Lifter.'
8/17/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Partly cloudy, 68.4° 24hr; 64.6/81.1° The reported "T" occurred with the remaining light drizzle shortly after yesterday morning's reading. Hot and humid here all the rest of the day.
8/18/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 61.4° 24hr: 59.2/80.5° Beginning to harvest some flower seeds for the 2011 garden.
8/19/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, crisp, 59.9° 24hr: 55.1/77.2° Gorgeous morning. The dogs are back to wanting to be outside again. Several times yesterday it LOOKED like rain: the clouds were right, and it even smelled like rain. But no rain fell to the ground here (again!). Drip irrigation continues...
8/20/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, light dew, 64.3° 24hr: 60.1/80.8° Yesterday for the first time I observed one of the hummingbirds attempting to drive off a (I think) swallowtail butterfly! It was very persistent in chasing the butterfly away from 'his' impatiens patch.
8/21/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 56.7° 24hr: 53.5/78.7° Trees stressed enough by lack of rain are now being attacked by Fall Webworms.
8/22/2010 8:00 AM 0.15 M M M M Overcast, 68.6° 24hr: 56.7 [yesterday am's reset]/76.5°
8/23/2010 7:30 AM 1.19 M M M M Raining, 63.4° 24hr: 62.5/71.5° Was never so happy to have had plans "rained out!" Good, soaking rain yesterday with a heavy burst with thunder at 2:05pm. It's really nice to have the second outer tube on mornings like this when the inner tube overflows. Just swap them out and bring the original inside for measuring in the comfort of the kitchen!
8/24/2010 8:00 AM 1.13 M M M M Partly cloudy, 59.8° 24hr: 57.8/65.5° Nice to see the stream that runs from the watershed to the lake is actually RUNNING again! And the lake itself is back up to a normal level. Systems like this one (from the NE or E) usually dump a lot of rain here -thanks to orographic uplift.
8/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.64 M M M M Raining, 59.9° 24hr: 59.2/67.0° With a total of 3.11" during these end-of-August days, I was hopeful that the perennials would recover. But the beautiful drift of astilbes are still Crispy Critters. (Month-to-date for August = 4.10")
8/26/2010 7:30 AM 0.53 M M M M Sunny, 60.3° 24hr: 59.9/65.7° It's really amazing how different rainfall amounts are here compared to central and south NJ. It is after all, a fairly small state!
8/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear, crisp, sunny, 56.3° 24hr: 50.4/73.6° A summer of A/C & HHH (and very dry days) makes a morning like this a joy! The clear skies also made possible the viewing of Jupiter with the moon last night...
8/28/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, very heavy dew, 50.8° 24hr: 48.4/70.0° First night in the 40°s in almost two months.
8/29/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 66.1° 24hr: 50.8/73.4° Beautiful, clear night last night: stars, katydids, and observing the moons of Jupiter with a telescope.
8/30/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 60.8° 24hr: 58.5/81.5° Continuing to keep up with the harvest and collect seed for next year's garden...
8/31/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, dew, 65.3° 24hr: 61.0/81.6° August rainfall total here = 4.63" (Would have been really awful if not for the four days of moderate to heavy rain 8/22-8/26: which left 3.64" with that one storm.)
9/1/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, heavy dew, 62.1° 24hr: 61.4/84.2° Thought it was hot here yesterday until I went 'down' to Franklin and Hamburg. Man, it was beastly! Neighbor's dog in our pond yesterday afteroon; last night it looks like raccoons were back in it too.
9/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, dew, 66.8° 24hr: 62.1/84.4° Trimming back some shrubs and a tree that is too near the house yesterday, just in case the effects of Earl get this far inland. Putting away small stuff, too. Hardyston Brook is almost completely dry; the exposed mud is really smelly.
9/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 67.1° 24hr: 65.5/85.1° Was holding off watering until the track of Earl was clearer. This morning I gave up and turned on the drip irrigation for the vegetable beds when I went out to check the gauge...
9/4/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, breezy, 62.8° 24hr: 61.4/79.7° Went to bed with A/C and yucky humidity. Woke up to a beautiful, crisp, clear day. Not one drop from Earl here. Watering will continue...
9/5/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, crisp, 55.4° 24hr: 51.5/72.9° Yesterday was a perfect day for a Painting Party: dry and breezy and the paint dried in no time. But we had to remove the drop cloth over the stone because the wind gusts were lifting it like a sail, even with 3 gals. of paint anchoring the bottom! Clouds overhead whipping by from the west.
9/6/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, crisp, 46.3° 24hr: 44.1/68.6° Drop-dead gorgeous morning. Another great painting day; hopefully, with a lot less trouble with the wind turning drop-cloths into sails!
9/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 63.5° 24hr: 46.3 [yesterday am's reset] /71.8° Stream from the watershed back to being empty again. 2010 dryness punctuated by rare, heavy rain events is proving very stressful to plants. Hope this is a relatively mild winter....
9/8/2010 7:30 AM 0.01 M M M M Mostly sunny, 68.6° 24hr: 63.5/81.5° Brief rain didn't even make it to the ground under the trees.
9/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, breezy, 58.0° 24hr: 55.6/80.5° So dry that even on a cool morning like this the gauge is bone dry. No condensation at all.
9/10/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 56.7° 24hr: 56.0/66.1 Used the fireplace last night for the first time all summer; the dogs enjoyed it as much as we did. Seeing the number of 90° or higher this year totaled by Dave, I went back to look at 2010 temp data: only three -and that was rounding up the 89.9° max in the three day heat wave we had in July. (I guess we do entirely too much whining up here about how awful the heat is when the temps are 'only' in the 80°s!)

9/14/2010 7:30 AM 0.63 M M M M Mostly sunny, 47.7° 24hr: 46.3/69.1° First Hail Report of the 2010 season yesterday! 4:20pm had just started grilling out on the patio and the skies darkened and heard continuous rolling thunder in NW. Thought it was yet another T-storm that was going by to our north. 4:50pm big, fat, drops of rain started; then heavy rain; then hail. Mostly pea-sized with a few marble sized pieces that covered the ground approx 40 -50%. Some torn leaves and leaves down. Power flickered several times. Temps dropped like a rock.

Noticeable amount of leaves down & as feared from the summer's heat and lack of rain: most went "from brown to down." p.s. If the Outer Banks looked like this after a MISS by Earle, I would hate to see it after a direct hit. Route 12 still had standing water on both sides of the road. Access roads were still flooded.
