12/20/2009 9:00 AM 2.00 23.2 M 23.2 M Snow/blizzard started yesterday afternoon and is still continuing. This is my first winter here, so had no idea of the drifting patterns. My gauge is buried in a 5' drift so I can't give you a melted snow reading. 23.20" inches is the average depth in my back yard, but that is not very accurate due to blowing and drifting. TV weather says we have up to 26 inches at this point, and during some hours last night it was falling at a rate of 3 to 5 inches an hour. 23F and snowing at 9:00AM. Because I had to enter something to submit the report, I put in 2.00 in rain guage measurement based on the averge of 1' of snow equals 1" of rain.

2/6/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It missed us! The mid-atlantic storm totally missed my area, where it had been predicted to receive from 3 to 9 inches beginning early last evening. It seems the science of weather-forecasting has a way to go. A cloudy 28F with winds gusting to 19MPH, making the w/c 17F at 6:45AM.
2/7/2010 6:45 AM T T M T M We received a very light dusting of snow yesterday morning as the uppermost fringe of the mid-Atlantic storm touched the southern side of Long Island. 16F at 6:45 with winds out of the NNW gusting to 29MPH, making the w/c 1 below. Clear sky.
2/8/2010 6:40 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 0.00 17F and clear with a w/c of 11F at 6:40AM. Weatherman forecasts a major snow event Tuesday night into Wednesday. Do we believe him this time after the up to 9" he forecast for the weekend turned out to be nothing?
2/9/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Unless the weatherman is calling "wolf" again, we seem to be in the track of a major storm. Forecasts now range from 8 to 12 inches and more. However, the southern side of Long Island may receive some precipitation in the form of rain and sleet, which would lower the amount expected here. Storm slated to start around midnight tonight through all of tomorrow. 18F with a w/c of 10F and clear at 6:45AM.
2/10/2010 8:45 AM 0.44 4.0 M M M So far, the weatherman has been dead on with his forecast for today. (Okay, bad choice of word.) Snow began shortly after midnight. At 6:45AM we had 1.5 inches. Didn't have time to melt snow in my gauge until 8:45AM. By then, we had 4 inches of snow, or 1.25 inches per hour in big, heavy flakes. Temperature at 8:45 is 33F with a w/c of 23. Wind out of the NNE at 13 MPH. Blizzard warning set from 11AM until 6AM tomorrow with heavy snow and winds gusting to 40MPH. Weather calling for a minimum of 16 inches of snow.
2/11/2010 6:45 AM 1.72 5.2 1.01 9.0 2.11 Although measurements taken at 6:45AM, couldn't report until now because I had to wait for snow in gauge and two cores to melt. Our twenty-four hour storm yesterday - midnight to midnight - included 9.2 inches of snow interspersed with rain and sleet. Therefore, core has more water than if it were just snow. 30F at 6:45AM with winds out of the NNW gusting to 29 MPH, making it feel like 16F.
2/12/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M 20F with a wind chill of 13F. Clear sky. Yesterday's sun reduced our snow depth 1.2 inches. After several attempts, I gave up trying to get a core measurement. Because of the rain and sleet that intermixed with the snow, what we have on the ground is very near hard ice. Couldn't get my core measuring device all the way through the snow. Try again tomorrow.
2/13/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M Took measurements at 6:45AM, but couldn't enter them because this website wouldn't open for me. After repeated tries, it finally opened at this time. Lost another inch of snow ont he ground during a sunny day yesterday. Today's it's cloudy. Still can't break through the icy snow to get my core reading. I'll try again on Monday.
2/14/2010 10:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M Happy Valentine's Day, everybody. We lost none of our icy snow yesterday; temperature never got above 29F and it was cloudy all day. Things should be different today. It's now 35F and sunny at 10:45AM. Oh, oh! Up to six more inches forecast for Tuesday night into Wednesday.
2/15/2010 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.5 0.96 Enjoy President's Day. 29F, w/c 19F, and sunny at 7:45AM.
2/16/2010 6:45 AM 0.17 0.3 M 5.5 M Percipitation in the form of rain, snow, and sleet started last night and stopped early this morning with another wave of the same expected later today changing to flurries for tomorrow. 34F and cloudy at 6:45AM
2/17/2010 6:45 AM 0.06 0.3 M 6.0 M Yesterday a light mix of rain, sleet, and snow making for slippery secondary roads this morning. My car doors were frozen shut. 27F and mostly clear at 6:45AM.
2/18/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M We are beginning a stretch of four days that could see daytime highs at 40F or better. 33F and mostly cloudy at 6:45AM.
2/19/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M 34 F at 6:45, w/c at 23F with wind gusts to 24MPH. Yesterday's high was 42F. Possibly three more days of 40 degree plus highs on their way.
2/20/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.5 M Yesterday's high was 43F and we lost 1/2 inch of snow/ice cover. Overnight low was 34F. 35F and mostly clear at 6:56AM.
2/22/2010 6:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 0.79 29F at 6:30AM and partly cloudy. Yesterday's high was 44F, the fourth day in a row above 40. Today may be the fifth and last in the string. Rain with possible snow and sleet moving in tonight.
2/23/2010 6:45 AM 0.04 0.0 M 1.5 M A very light rain began overnight and still continues at 6:45AM. 36F; yesterday's high was 45F. Rain expected to continue through the day, heavier at times, and a "powerful" storm is headed our way for Thursday, Friday, and maybe into Saturday. At least, that's how the weatherman sees it.
2/24/2010 6:45 AM 1.52 0.0 M T M Steady rain and temperatures in the low 40's for the past 24 hours have removed all but a few, thin patches of snow. But what's to come? Forecasters in the area are using phrases such as "perfect storm," "huge," "big," and "powerful" to describe the storm headed our way and due tomorrow through Friday daytime. One long-time and respected forecaster says he has never seen a storm like the one that is now developing over the ocean and expected to head inland across the Jersey and Long Island coast, then wrap around itself once or twice. Predicted snow fall amounts range from 3 inches to two feet. Wait and see. 42F and raining and 6:45AM.
2/25/2010 6:35 AM 1.51 0.0 M 0.0 M Continual rain for the past two days has melted all our snow. Forecasters now calling our current storm a "monster." Predictions range from 3 to 6 inches on Long Island to up to 3 feet north and west. 39F and raining at 6:35AM.
2/26/2010 8:15 AM 2.06 7.5 0.32 7.5 0.32 As much fun as I have made of forecasters' inaccurate predictions in the past, today I must admit they are dead on, which is especially difficult with this very rare winter storm. The low pressure "monster" storm moved in from the Atlantic Wednesday and settled over New York City and began spinning counter-clockwise like a pinwheel. It is now on its second revolution with a third expected, maybe even a fourth with up to 8 more inches of snow expected. Yesterday began with moderate to heavy rain, turning to snow after midnight. If you subtract the core of the snow from the gauge, it gives me 4.77 inches of rain over the last three days, which led to heavy road flooding. The only person who got this storm wrong: Mayor Bloomberg, who late yesterday said schools would be open today and this morning had to reverse himself. An interesting time to be a Cocorahs reporter.
2/27/2010 8:15 AM 0.21 1.4 0.21 8.9 M Let the melting begin. We received only snow showers yesterday, some with huge flat flakes, some with salt grains. Some came down so slowly you could almost count them before they landed, othertimes it was like a Yankee ticker-tape parade. Received 1.4 inches of snow, making our two-day storm total 8.9 inches. Total amount of precipitation (rain and melted snow) over the five-day-storm was 5.34 inches. 32F and mostly cloudy at 8:15AM.
2/28/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.0 M We lost more than 1/2 of our snow depth yesterday, a day that was cloudy and had a high temperature of 36F. Expecting rain and/or snow showers today and tomorrow, and what our local forecasters are calling possibly the last snow storm of the season on Wednesday. 31F and cloudy at 6:45AM
3/1/2010 6:45 AM 0.12 0.0 M 1.5 0.32 Brief rain and sleet shower yesterday. 39F and hazy with a full Worm Moon at 6:45AM.
3/2/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M A sunny high of 45F yesterday melted all buy a few stray patches of snow. Forecasters are predicting the possibility of our last snow storm of the season tonight into tomorrow following by a marked increase in temperatures. 33F and sunny with a purple to red to orange sunrise at 6:45AM.
3/3/2010 6:45 AM 0.02 T T T M What started as rain overnight turned to all snow at 5:40AM. 34F and snowing at 6:45AM. However, the snow is only starting to stick on grassy areas, but not enough to measure. Expected to rain and snow for the next 36 hours, but with not a lot of accumulation.
3/4/2010 6:45 AM 0.19 0.0 M 0.0 M Yesterday's snow, rain and high temperature of 39F, left no accumulation on the ground. It has just begun to snow lightly at 6:45AM with a temperature of 37F under a cloudy sky.
3/5/2010 6:45 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Intermittent snow showers and sprinkles through the past 24 hours, but no accumulation although some roofs are showing a dusting of snow. Yeterday's high: 46F. 36F with a snow shower and cloudy at 6:45AM.
3/6/2010 7:45 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Most of yesterday morning we received very light snow flurries, the tail end of the storm that passed over on Wednesday and was 1,000 miles to the east. But, that's behind us now. The snow disappeared in the afternoon with 46F temps. Then I saw my first robin yesterday afternoon, and she's just in time. Forecast for the next three days: 50F+ and sunny. 31F and sunny at 7:45AM.
3/7/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M What a glorious day yesterday. 53F and sunny, although there was a chilly breeze blowing down from Canada. Someday, somebody -- maybe Donald Trump -- will build a wall between US and Canada to keep out that wind. Three more 50+ days on tap. 36F and sunny at 6:45AM.

9/25/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 71F and hazy at 6:45AM. A fellow Cocorahs reporter informed me that I had misnamed the full moon on September 23 when I called it the Corn Moon. On further research I learned that in September, when the full moon occurs near the Autumnal Equinox, it is called the Harvest Moon. This happens two out of every three years, such as it did this year. However, when the September full moon occurs away from the first day of Fall, it is called the Corn Moon. On years that there is a Corn Moon, the October full moon is called the Harvest Moon. On years that the Harvest Moon falls in September, the October Full Moon is called the Hunter's Moon. It was a good week. I learned something.
