1/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.17 M M M M Dense fog at the time of observation. Visability a couple hundred feet. At the time of observation, a very thin sheet of ice covered the outer cylinder & the funnel. The precipitation collected in the inner cylinder was still liquid. My guess is the overnight temps barely hit the freezing mark. Precipitation was light, and fell between 8am-10am yesterday.

1/20/2010 8:00 AM 0.31 M M M M Steady rain falling at time of observation. Any measurable rain fell overnight. A light drizzle at 10:00pm. I heard rain starting to fall approximately 1:00am.
1/21/2010 8:00 AM 0.82 M M M M Rain came in waves during the observation period. I checked on the gauge periodically during the day in between waves. Rain fell from OB yesterday through lunchtime. .22" in the gauge @ 1:50pm // It was breezy w/ no rain @ 3:30pm // A steady rain started falling @ 5:15pm w/ some thunder // Very powerful lightning/thunder briefly passing through between 5:30 - 5:45pm // .44" of rain in the gauge @ 9:30pm w/ no rain falling // Steady rain falling @ OB this morning.
1/22/2010 8:00 AM 0.27 M M M M Most precipitation fell between 8am-12:00pm. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings/Tornado Warnings just to the east of us, but no severe weather at this location. A thunderstorm passed through between 6:00-6:30pm. Did not produce any heavy rain. Overcast and misty at time of observation this morning.
1/23/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M
1/24/2010 8:00 AM 0.93 M M M M The first rain arrived quickly at 12:45am in the form of a strong thunderstorm. Strong cell passed through between 1:00-1:10am (see significant weather report). Wind gradually increasing throughout the day. Strong wind by the nighttime. A few sprinkles at observation time with a slight breeze.
1/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.26 M M M M A few light showers in the first few hours after observation. Moderate rain fell approximately 5:30pm as a storm cell passed through. Reports of a weak tornado touchdown in a neighborhooding county. During the tornado warning, we experienced breezy conditions and overcast skys. No sign of severe weather anywhere. .20" in the rain gauge at 10:00pm. Cold and breezy at observation this morning. Total rainfall for this system is 1.19"
1/26/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Brief heavy snowfall driven by gusty winds between 10:30 - 10:40am. Another wave of moderate/heavy snow approximately 1:30pm. Breezy all day. Some off/on flurries throughout the afternoon. Some flakes falling at observation. Nothing accumulated.
1/27/2010 8:00 AM T T T M M Flurries fell for the majority of the day. A trace of melted precipitation collected in the gauge. I will be out of town for the upcoming weekend, so I will be unable to record the projected snowfall on Friday.
1/28/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Unfortunately, I will be unable to measure the upcoming winter storm. Really hoping I could be in on the action, but I had a trip to Chattanooga planned long before the winter storm was in the forecast. I will be back on Sunday, and I will work on taking snow core samples on the remaining snow to determine water content.

2/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.05 M M 3.0 0.65 .04" of precipitation was in the gauge upon observation. I added .01" to that measurement because I missed 10-15 minutes of heavy drizzle last night AND this morning when I was taking core samples of the snow. I definitely need to try to get a better system figured out so I do not miss new precipitation. Drizzle falling at observation this morning.
2/3/2010 8:00 AM T M M 0.8 0.30 Light drizzle for an hour after observation. Existing snowfall on the ground melted significantly due to warmer temperatures yesterday. Snow covers half the ground now. Took an average of existing snowfall with the bare ground to come up with the existing snowfall total.
2/4/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M 75% of the ground is bare with a few shady areas of patchy snow left over from the snowstorm last Friday. The upcoming rain will likely melt the rest of it away.
2/5/2010 8:00 AM 0.89 M M T M Light rain throughout the entire night. Light rain falling at observation time. Ground is VERY saturated from previous snow and now all this rain. With the exception of snow drifts, all the snow from last week is gone.
2/6/2010 8:00 AM 0.44 T M T M Light drizzle/rain took place throughout the entire duration of the observation period yesterday. A light dusting of snow fell overnight. Light sleet falling at time of observation today. The measurement taken is a combination of the rain and melted snow from the past 24 hours.
2/7/2010 8:00 AM T T M T M While very light snow flurries fell off/on throughout the day, nothing measurable fell in the gauge. Reporting trace amounts for the day. Still a dusting of snow on the ground from yesterday's system.
2/8/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Some shaded areas still have trace amounts of snow on the ground from Saturday morning's dusting.
2/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.83 1.5 M 1.5 M Snow started falling @ 6:00pm // Already sticking to the ground by 6:30pm // I measured 1" on the snow board @ 10:00pm with a mix falling // Snow turned to all rain at 11:00pm, and 1.5" was on the snow board then. Rain fell through the night with moderate snow falling at observation time this morning. The snow board had .75" on it this morning.
2/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 0.5 0.08 1.5 0.23 Some melting occured yesterday. Total snow cover at dark was approximately 1". A dry powder-like snow fell overnight, adding about .5" of new snow. The wind was blowing hard, so precipitation measurement in the gauge was difficult. Took core samples of the existing snow & the new snow and melted both for water amounts. Lost some of the water droplets in the "new snow" measurement because the small funnel fell. I caught it before too much water was lost, and I salvaged as many drops as possible. So my measurement of .08 has a margin of error of .02"

2/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.18 0.6 M 0.6 M Precipitation was mostly liquid during the day with some sleet mixed in. It was very light and misty. Some fog rolled in during the 10 o'clock hour. The cold front system arrived approximately 10:30. It started as rain and quickly changed to snow by 11:00pm. .50" - .75" of snow on the ground by observation time. A band of very heavy snow passed through 15 minutes after observation time, so it will be included in tomorrows report. Due to melting the 24-hour precipitation, I was unable to get a core sample of the overnight snow for liquid content. I did get a sample of the 1.2" on the ground after the heavy snow which I will include in tomorrows report.
2/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 1.4 M 2.0 0.10 This observation period began with a very heavy band of snow between 8:10am - 8:20am. A total of .6" fell during that time (see significant weather report). Light/Moderate snow showers fell most of the day. The wind made accurate measurements difficult. Due to temperatures being well-below freezing throughout the entire day, the snow that fell was a very dry snow. A total of 1.5" was on the ground at 7:30pm.
2/17/2010 8:00 AM T T M 0.5 M Periods of flurries during the afternoon. Did not accumulate to much. Temperatures above freezing allowed for significant melting. Quite possible all of the snow will be gone by the next observation period.
2/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Still some small patches of snow here and there. Should be all gone by tomorrow's report.

2/23/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Any precipitation that fell was very light, and in the form of drizzle. Some of the water droplets had turned to ice on the funnel when I emptied it at observation time.
2/24/2010 8:00 AM T T M M M Some snowflakes fell from the sky at various parts of the day
2/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 T M M M Steady light snow showers throughout most of the morning hours. It began to stick in the grassy areas just as the snow stopped falling. All melted by the evening. Did not amount to anything measurable.

3/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.23 M M M M I was out of town through 11:15pm last night. The owner of a nearby CoCoRaHs station emptied my gauge yesterday. I do not know times for the rain for this observation period. A few isolated thunderstorms overnight produced some moderate rain. One such storm passed through approximately 2am. A light rain was falling at observation time this morning.
3/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.24 M M M M Some light rain starting at observation time yesterday. Otherwise a rainfree day yesterday. Any rain in the gauge this morning likely came from overnight. A steady, soaking rain falling at observation time this morning.
3/13/2010 8:00 AM 0.24 M M M M Rain was falling at observation time yesterday through mid/late-morning. Took a break through the rest of the day. Checked the gauge at 2:30pm, and their was .16" of precipitation. Took a walk outside at 10:15pm, and the sky was clear with lots of stars. The additional .08" of precipitation must have fell after midnight. A drizzle was falling at observation this morning.
3/14/2010 8:00 AM 0.13 M M M M Rain amounts have been mostly light. Drizzling at observation time yesterday, and drizzling at observation time this morning. Some periods of light rain and drizzle took place periodically during the observation period.

The lightning count was very rapid West of Nasvhille, but only one distant lightning strike could be seen at this location thoughout the entire duration...and it took place at 12:07am. Throughout the entire day, a stiff breeze had been blowing, but just before the rain hit, the wind picked up to a sustained 45-50mph. We had torential downpours starting at 12:15. Once the initial front-line passed, the rain and wind calmed down to a more steady shower. I went to bed before it ended, but when I emptied the rain gauge this at OB time, it was overcast and rain-free.

4/23/2010 8:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Traveled to Jackson, TN during this observation period. We experienced some rain along I-40 well west of Nashville going to Jackson and then coming back from Jackson. The rain moved east and arrived at this registered location approximately 10:30pm and lasted at least a couple hours....however, I fell asleep before it finished. This morning at OB time, the skys were royal blue with not a cloud in sight, and everything looked so fresh. We needed that rain. Anxious to see what tomorrow's severe weather will hold.
4/24/2010 8:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Started sprinkling at 11:15pm. The wind was very gusty, but I went to bed before any big rain came through...however with a observation total of .09", I can imagine the rainfall was not significant.
4/25/2010 8:00 AM 1.84 M M M M Several rounds of thunderstorms passed over which resulted in brief heavy rain and lots of thunder/lightning. We never experienced any storms which reached severe status at this OB point...however, at 7:30pm, a very heavy thunderstorm with rotation passed over which went tornado warned MOMENTS after it passed through. It briefly caused some concern for me and I was watching it carefully. Other than that....a lot of rain, and a few strong thunderstorms.
4/26/2010 8:00 AM 0.22 M M M M All rain took place in the late afternoon hours after 4pm. The beginning of the day was bright and sunny, but it did not take long at all for the heavy cloud cover to settle in. Ahead of the rain was some very gusty winds. Made me think a big storm was coming, but NOAA weather said rainfall rates would be light in any rain cells. The rainfall rates were light, but it was a soaking rain that lasted the remainder of the evening and into the overnight hours.

5/1/2010 8:30 AM 1.74 M M M M -- TAKE NOTE: I was 30 minutes late emptying my guage -- 100% of this rainfall took place between 5:30am - 8:00am when my observation time is. We had a series of strong thunderstorms pass through between 5:30 - 6:30am. After that time, it has been a soaking rain with a few embedded thunderstorms. Expecting lots of rain today and tomorrow.
5/2/2010 8:00 AM 6.14 M M M M Words cannot describe the magnatude of the rainfall that we have received in the past 24 hours. It has truly been remarkable. Numerous waves of heavy rain pounded us leading up to the observation time this morning. It was very difficult to record the rainfall in the gauge due to rain continuing to fall while recording. I will admit that I filled up the inner tube a little to fast a couple times resulting in some water escaping measurement. As a result, the figure of 6.14 may actually be a little low. Not by much though...I would say a margin of error of .03" // At this exact location, we did not receive the major flooding that other places surrounding us did. We are on higher terrain. However, we did receive a flood of water in the basement of the dormatory located here, as well as significant field flooding event taking place at observation time. I am anxious to see what tomorrow will hold for rain totals.
5/3/2010 8:00 AM 3.37 M M M M Several rounds of very heavy rain took place in the morning/early afternoon hours. Otherwise it was a steady moderate rain for the entire day until approximately 6:30pm. Total storm total since 5:30am Saturday morning is 11.29".

11/22/2009 11/29/2009 8:00 AM 8 0.05 M M Out of town for Thanksgiving. Not sure which days it rained...I do know one of the days was the 22nd.
12/17/2009 1/04/2010 8:00 AM 19 1.26 M M Out of town for Christmas break during this time. I have submitted my December 2009 precipitation summary to my blog: http://super-nate.blogspot.com/2010/01/cocorahs-station-tn-sr-55-december-2009.html
1/8/2010 1/11/2010 8:00 AM 4 0.08 T M This is melted snow precipitation over the duration. I was out of town to Chattanooga during the weekend. Patchy amounts of snow still on the ground when I returned. Some back roads are still icy this morning (1-11).
1/30/2010 2/01/2010 10:00 PM 3 0.50 3.2 0.62 ***No precipitation fell between 8am - 11:00pm CST today when I emptied the rain gauge. Therefore, I went ahead and emptied it before my observation period tomorrow morning. A wintery system is forecast to come through overnight, so I want a clean gauge to measure the new snowfall. ***The time I emptied the gauge was 11:00pm CST. When submitting the report, it would not allow an observation time later than the station's current time, so I adjusted it to 10pm and it accepted. Likely a time zone difference in the system. ***Unfortunately, I had to travel to Chattanooga ahead of the snowstorm here in Sumner County. ***All observations submitted in this report were taken at 11:00pm on 2/1/10. I will take additional observations in the morning and include them in my daily report. ***"Total Depth of Snow on Ground" measurement is a very close approximate due to having no access to a ruler that measures in tenths. I should have one for tomorrow. I took several measurements and averaged the result ***Does it make sense that the Multi-Day melted precipitation is less than the core precipitation measurement? It seems odd to me, but thats what I came up with. ***While measuring the multi-day data, a very light rain/sleet started to fall. Unfortunately, the gauge was not outside for the first 10 minutes of it due to melting the snow core. I will make note of that in tomorrow's daily report. ***My account of the snowfall in Apison, TN (near Chattanooga) can be found at www.super-nate.blogspot.com
3/2/2010 3/07/2010 11:00 PM 6 T M M Just came back from a trip to Chattanooga. The gauge was empty when I checked it. I am sure more precipitation than a trace fell during the duration. I am reporting a trace because an obvious water stain was present on the bottom of the cylinder where precipitation may have collected and then evaporated. I took out the inner tube during the duration because snow/ice was in the forecast.
3/25/2010 3/26/2010 8:00 AM 2 1.21 M M My observation time is 8:00am, and I missed my alarm and got outside by 8:30am. Several people were saying it started raining at 7:30am. Therefore, to maintain consistency I left the gauge alone and decided to report the 30 minutes of rain during 3-25-10 ob period & entire day of 3-26-10 ob period as one multi-day accumulation period. The rain fell between 7:30am and 8:00pm on 3-25-10 with some breaks in between. A strong thunderstorm passed through with heavy rain at 6:15pm 3-25-10.
3/28/2010 3/29/2010 8:00 AM 2 0.47 M M Gone to Chattanooga for the weekend.
4/3/2010 4/04/2010 8:00 PM 2 0.22 M M Made another weekend trip to Chattanooga.
