10/2/2009 7:00 AM 0.83 M M M M Quite windy during the rain event. Early afternoon round of showers, then a break, steadier rain in the evening and a heavy shower later in the evening. 4.65" since September 21.
10/3/2009 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Light rain and drizzle late, dry wedge early.
10/4/2009 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Light rain showers morning.
10/5/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/6/2009 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Raining at observation but soon to end. Doubt if storm total will exceed .25.
10/7/2009 7:00 AM 0.35 M M M M .44 storm total, drops were small and wind was strong so rain was horizontal at times, likely that at least 10% more fell than was recorded. Size of puddles seem to support closer to 2/3 inch.

10/15/2009 7:00 AM T M M M M Cold, cloudy, breezy with drizzle off and on.
10/16/2009 7:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Very cold with occasional light rain, some flakes may have been mixed in overnight but I did not see them so will not report a trace snowfall unless someone in my family or a neighbor can confirm.
10/17/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/18/2009 7:00 AM T M M M M Minor showers Sat aft. with some ice pellets in areas but not at my house.

10/21/2009 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M A couple of light showers.
10/22/2009 7:00 AM 0.18 M M M M Some light rain overnight. Yesterday morning's showers were hopefully only a trace (appeared that way on radar) because my dog knocked over my rain gauge which I had placed on the ground after cleaning to catch the morning's shower. The .18 is from the overnight rain only. Still raining at obs.
10/23/2009 7:00 AM 1.22 M M M M Cold windy rain all day and night, but much heavier to the southeast. Fixed typo in rain amount - originally entered 1.12, should be 1.22.
10/24/2009 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Off an on light rain, much heavier almost everywhere else.
10/25/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M

10/27/2009 7:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Light rain off and on and more steady mid to late afternoon. Freezing fog this morning.

10/29/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I expect all the heaviest precip to go around lake mills as usual. East, West, North and South, you will all get more than me!
10/30/2009 7:00 AM 0.72 M M M M As I predicted, Jefferson County was in the driest area of the whole Central U.S. with most of the rain showers dying right on the edge of the county or skirting around us. Only .4 at Jefferson to my east but 1.4 in Madison to my west. Why is this always the case? Because we are in that unfortunate small spot between the active weather to the west and north and moisture feed to the south and east. Add the low elevation and you lose several inches of rain per year compared to places only 30 miles away in all directions. The main reasons I had a higher overall precip total last year than most of the other stations is due to one storm and because I don't miss a measurement. However, note that the wettest areas in Wis. usually include Cedarburg, probably due to some lake effect, Black River Falls, due to active weather/air mass clash and Belleville and Kenosha, due to being closer to the gulf moisture stream.

12/4/2009 7:00 AM 0.07 1.4 0.07 1.0 0.07 Dry light fluffy snow from evening snow showers. Some areas just to the south picked up 5 inches and no snow fell just to the north. It all depended on whether you were lucky enough to be under training snowshowers. I did catch a 25" 6 lb walleye last night in the snow, probably the last fishing before ice over. Now I am hoping for cold weather for 3 weeks to make 4 inches of ice on area lakes.

12/6/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T The strangest thing happened this morning - I was raking leaves in my partially snowcovered yard around noon, in a hurry to get rid of the last vestiges of fall before the upcoming snowfalls. The air was calm and it was sunny, around 30 and very nice. Suddenly the wind kicked up and a vortex formed right over my largest pile of leaves, carrying them about 15 feet high and slowly moving southeast toward the road. I walked over to the vortex and the wind was at least 25 miles per hour, very tightly wound up. It lasted about 5 minutes and finally died in the street. I suspect the devil was caused by uneven heating between the partially snowcovered parts of the area and the warming bare ground, but perhaps it was a larger scale event. It went back to calm and still is as I write this. My family had a great time watching it in the front window!
12/7/2009 7:00 AM 0.07 1.3 0.07 1.5 0.07 To quote Peter and Lou Berryman: "Up in Wisconsin, up in Wisconsin The weather isn't very nice Up in Wisconsin, up in Wisconsin They gotta fish right thru the ice." I'm waiting for the ice to form, perhaps after the dreaded snowstorm!
12/8/2009 7:00 AM 0.02 0.4 0.02 2.0 0.08 Very light snow off and on yesterday and beginning again around 6 am. Caught 2 nice walleyes last night since lake has yet to freeze over. Of course I was fishing for crappies but had heavy line on "just in case!"
12/9/2009 7:00 AM 1.32 12.3 1.35 11.5 1.42 Extreme snowfall as far as water content and tree damage. Measured more than once to reduce compaction error but total depth at final obs was affected by the weight and sleet compaction. If I had measured even more often (every 4 hours) we would have probably had over 13" 1 inch fell during the day and 11.3 during the night. Lost a 100 year old large hickory tree that split 3 ways and had damage to a number of pine trees. Snowing lightly at obs.
12/10/2009 7:00 AM 0.05 0.8 0.05 11.0 1.47 13.1 total, settling, melting from below and wind shrank it to an 11" cover (including 2" that was already on the ground before the storm). Ended up in a ditch near Madison this morning after a face off with a plow who wanted the whole road. Madison definitely had 6 more inches than we did, roads are deeply rutted ice and since they refuse to use sand, traffic will be impossible for weeks.
12/11/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 11.0 1.40 Snow still tightly clinging to trees, thus pines that are bending severely might stay bent for years. Roads still a mess, esp. in Dane County where they did a poor job plowing. Jefferson County did a much better job (we had a bit less snow but it was heavier). As soon as you reach the county line it goes from a few icy patches in Jefferson County to deeply rutted ice in Dane County.

Initial ice/sleet will change to windy rain and high water content snow will melt. Only a small amount of snow on backside after dry slot Christmas night. 12/22/2009 7:00 AM 0.07 1.2 0.07 8.0 1.38 Light snow overnight, still snowing lightly at obs. Heavier to the SW. 2 inches in Madison and probably 3 by the end from Verona to Janesville. Heavy snow for a short time Wed night, then freezing rain showers the rest of the night. 4 inches in gauge but appears some of that was drifted. I might have been low on snow amount due to drifting and compression. Still at freezing at obs time. An average of .2 of ice on trees with some small branches falling. Up to .3 on other exposed objects such as my car. Over 2 inches water now in snowpack. Flooding will be a problem.
12/25/2009 7:00 AM 1.39 0.0 0.00 5.0 1.20 Steady rain all night, melted 6 inches of snow, the rest will melt today. Estimate of core value will be updated later. Expect some field flooding later if freeze delayed.
12/26/2009 7:00 AM 0.13 1.3 0.09 6.0 1.29 A few light rain showers and 40 degrees melted much of the snow, then temp drop of 12 degrees in a half hour and snow showers made it look like Christmas again. Lake effect areas to the NE will get hammered, perhaps 15 inches in some spots. Lake Mills/Jefferson County expected to get the least in the warning area due to dry air feed and poor location as respect to pivot point of upper low deformation zone.

Melted most of the snow and made everything ugly, never got very warm, missed most of the rain, now made it windy and cold and not a flake of snow. The is why I am seriously looking at moving to another state that either gets into the sweet spot of storms more often or stays warm all year long. Thus, either Vermont if I want snow or South Carolina if I want nice weather. Hmmmmm! 4/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.49 M M M M When you look at the radar estimated precip, you will see that the least amount of rain once again fell in my area. A tiny little hole in a large area 1-2 inches fell all around and all I got was a lousy half inch. Not enough to even get the ground wet under the cars. A pounding storm on my way to work this morn completely died as it hit Lake Mills. Watch the radar history for mkx at http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/radar/ and pick the 3 hour period around 12:00 GMT. 1.31 in Jefferson, .68 in Lake Mills city, 1.29 in Cottage Grove, 1.40 Madison, 1.52 Whitewater, .91 Hustisford. North, South, East and West, all got much more. Terrain effect? Maybe.

5/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.44 M M M M Once again we measured the least amount of rain in the whole area but I think there was significant blowout on my rain gauge. Gusts probably near 40mph all night blowing away my window well cover. Rain fell at very high angle and while I have gauge located in best spot away from trees, it appears that strong winds created a rain shadow over my gauge downwind of a tall, large, thickly leafed-out box elder. 6/3/2010 7:00 AM 1.18 M M M M Severe storm with 1"+ hail, my wife reported that it looked like night time during storm, hail report filed. Leaves all over yard from hail, but there was some wind when heaviest rain fell, branches down in nearby yards. Likely undermeasured precip as hail bounced out (funnel was in) and rain came in sideways. Water in fields looked more like 1.5 inches, was bone dry before rain. My wife saved some 1.25" hailstones in freezer, hard ice, somewhat flattened but partially melted once she was able to collect them, so perhaps they were bigger upon impact. Lake breeze from Michigan had just passed through a few minutes before storm, intensifying it (watch UCAR Radar history).

No structure damage except for a screen blown out of window. Appeared to be microburst as no tree damage just 1 mile east. Rain fell horizontally during windstorm, almost certainly gauge missed a lot of precip. Field flooding indicates more like 1.3 inches of rain.

6/2/2010 5:30 PM No hail pad, wife reported this info to me over the phone since I am at work in Madison. Pink echoes on radar right over my home site at same time as hail. Hail covered ground at height of storm but not enough to completely whiten. 1.75" stones reported nearby.
