12/20/2009 7:00 AM 0.59 11.0 M 19.0 M Storm total snowfall: 20.0 inches. Storm-total liquid equivalent: 1.02 inches. Snow fell for a few minutes shy of 24 hours, ending just before 9:30 pm on Dec. 19. Some settling of the snow began to occur overnight; hence, the 19-inch depth. This morning's low temperature as sunrise approaches: 24 deg. F.
12/21/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.0 M Low: 25 deg F. D.C.-area federal gov't offices are closed today for a full day due to inclement weather for the first time since Sep. 18-19, 2003 (aftermath of Hurricane Isabel) and due to snow for the first time since Feb. 18, 2003.
12/22/2009 7:00 AM T T M 13.0 M Temperatures remained slightly above the freezing mark for much of the 24-hour period, allowing for some melting and compaction of snow. I observed some snow flurries a few minutes either side of 4 pm.
12/23/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.0 M There was a wide range of temperatures this morning within just a couple of miles of this station, ranging from the upper 10s in the low spots to the upper 20s on the hilltops and ridges. There was very little snow melt or settling in the last 24 hours.
12/24/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.0 M Low at station: 11 degrees F. I noted an instantaneous, unofficial, car-thermometer reading of 6 degrees F before dawn along Rt. 51 in southwestern Jefferson County (Opequon Creek Valley), west of Charles Town.
12/25/2009 7:00 AM T T M 10.0 M It is a very White Christmas from the snow of Dec. 18-19, and now icy, too. Light sleet and freezing rain was falling at the 7 am observation time. Low earlier this morning: 17 degrees F.
12/26/2009 7:00 AM 0.79 T M 5.0 M Sleet and freezing rain occurred early on Christmas Day, with 0.05 inch ice accretion. Frozen precipitation melted during the early afternoon, when temperatures climbed above freezing and rain arrived. Rain and rising temperatures melted considerable amounts of the pre-existing snow pack.
12/27/2009 7:00 AM 0.07 0.0 M 3.0 M The temperature dipped to a frosty 24 degrees F this morning, freezing solid the remaining snow. Skies cleared at this station, near a hilltop, but thick fog is currently visible between here and the Blue Ridge to the east, in the Opequon and Shenandoah Valleys. On Dec. 26, morning rain tapered to drizzle and ended by early afternoon.
12/28/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M Overnight low of 30 degrees F occurred prior to the pre-dawn passage of a cold front that blasted through with wind gusts above 40 mph.
12/29/2009 7:00 AM T T M 2.0 M I noted a few late-evening snow flurries, especially around 10 pm. More importantly, already gusty winds picked up in the late evening, with gusts above 40 mph common overnight.
12/30/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M The low temperature fell to 15 degrees F, despite a lingering breeze and the overnight arrival of a cirrus overcast. For the 12th consecutive observation, there is at least a 2-inch snow depth.
12/31/2009 7:00 AM 0.10 1.5 M 3.0 M The first flakes arrived around 4:30 am, and most of the accumulating snow fell from 5 to 7 am. The low temperature was 25 degrees F. Road conditions quickly deteriorated following the snow's onset.
1/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.05 T M 3.0 M Snow ended just after 7 am on Dec. 31; periods of light rain and sleet fell during the afternoon and evening hours. Overnight low of 30 degrees F led to the development of some ice patches on roads and sidewalks. December precipitation: 5.00 inches; wettest month since May 2009 (7.07 inches). December snowfall: 27.8 inches. Annual precipitation: 39.10 inches. Annual snowfall: 35.1 inches. (The 2009-10 season-to-date snowfall of 27.8 inches easily exceeds the 2008-09 seasonal sum of 8.0 inches.)
1/2/2010 7:00 AM T T M 2.0 M Fifteenth consecutive observation with snow cover. Colder air swept in mid- to late afternoon on New Year's Day, accompanied by snow showers. Low this morning: 21 degrees F.
1/3/2010 7:00 AM T T M 2.0 M Windy conditions prevailed throughout the period. At nearby KMRB, westerly winds gusted as high as 49 mph on Jan. 2. There were frequent stray flurries during the day on Jan. 2. This morning's low temperatures was 11 degrees F, tied for the lowest reading so far this winter. The residual snow cover from the Dec. 18-19 storm is very hard and crunchy.
1/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M Not as cold overnight (but still blustery), with a low of 19 degrees F. This is the 17th consecutive day with at least a 2-inch snow cover.

1/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.29 0.3 M T M Sleet, which began about 6:30 pm, was the predominant precipitation type, but there was also some rain, freezing rain, and snow. Sleet/snow depth peaked around midnight; there was some settling and compaction during the pre-dawn hours due to rain and freezing rain. Berkeley County schools opened on a 2-hour delay due to slush and patches of ice on secondary roads. Overnight low temperature: 32 degrees F.
1/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.20 0.5 M 0.5 M Jan. 21-22 event totals: sleet/snow, 0.8 inch; liquid, 0.49 inch. Accumulation was mostly sleet. Sleet ended by mid-day Jan. 22. 1/25/2010 7:00 AM 1.08 0.0 M 0.0 M It was a dark and stormy night. Periods of heavy rain, along with gusty southeasterly winds, developed overnight as temperatures climbed through the 40's and well into the 50's. Very heavy rain also fell after this observation was taken and will be reflected in tomorrow's report.
1/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.88 T M 0.0 M Jan. 24-25 event total: 1.96 inches. Heavy morning rain on the 25th yielded to scattered showers. A few showers lingered until after 6 pm. It was breezy and cooler overnight with a low of 34 degrees F; a few snow flurries were noted around the time of this morning's observation. Nearby Opequon Creek at Martinsburg appears to be cresting this morning at approximately 2.14 feet above flood stage.
1/27/2010 7:00 AM T T M 0.0 M Flurries and light snow showers frequently occurred during the day and into the evening, but there was no accumulation.

1/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.18 6.0 M 6.0 M Low temperature this morning: 4 degrees F. Snow fell on Jan. 30 for about 12 hours (approx. 8 am to 8 pm), but most of the accumulation occurred from late morning to mid-afternoon. This was one of the lightest, fluffiest major snowfalls I've seen; yet, roads became very treacherous as the snow became packed into a thin, icy layer.
2/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 M January precipitation: 3.41 inches. January snowfall: 7.6 inches. Berkeley Co. schools opened on a 2-hour delay. Overnight low was 19 degrees F; breezy conditions prevented the temperature from falling further. In nearby valleys, temperatures fell well into the 10's before sunrise. Footnote: The Jan. 31 minimum of 4 deg F was the lowest reading in this location since Jan. 17, 2009, when it was -3 deg F.
2/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.5 M Snow cover is remarkably uniform, reflecting lack of blowing and drifting during the Jan. 30 event.
2/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.24 4.5 M 5.0 M It is a picture-postcard morning, with snow plastered to trees and just about everything else. Treated and/or plowed roads, which were very slippery during the 8-hour event, improved after the snow ended. Berkeley County schools are closed today. Five-inch snow depth is a combination of the Jan. 30 event and the Feb. 2 event; the new snow settled almost an inch between 11 pm and dawn.
2/4/2010 7:00 AM T T M 3.0 M On Feb. 3, snow flurries were observed mid-morning and again at times early to mid-afternoon.
2/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M ...the calm before the storm. Low this morning: 30 degrees F. Berkeley Co. schools are closed today in anticipation of the snow.
2/6/2010 7:00 AM 1.92 21.0 M 23.0 M Epic snow storm continues. I managed to get an accurate liquid total by tamping down the snow in the 4-inch gauge every couple of hours, day and night. Snow intensity waned between 2 am and dawn, but moderate snow has resumed at the time of observation. New snow total is 21 inches; 2 inches remained from the storms of Jan. 30 and Feb. 2. The temperature hovered near the freezing mark on Feb. 5, but has fallen to 27 degrees F this morning. Winds picked up overnight.
2/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.24 4.0 M 27.0 M Snow gradually decreased in intensity. The sun became dimly visible by 2:30 pm and the last flakes fell around 4:00 pm. Feb. 5-6 event totals: 25.0 inches of snow and 2.16 inches of liquid equivalent. Low temperature this morning, Feb. 7: 12 degrees F.
2/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 24.0 M Lows this morning: 14 degrees F.
2/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 23.0 M Low of 10 degrees F with a light frost (on non-snow-covered surfaces such as cleared-off cars).
2/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.46 5.5 M 27.0 M Between 6 and 7 am, winds and snowfall intensity increased, with winds turning to a westerly direction and the temperature falling to 23 degrees F. At observation time (7 am), visibility is less than one-half mile in moderate snow and blowing snow. New snowfall was relatively easy to measure until the wind started to howl, but now there is considerable blowing and drifting. New snowfall reached 2 inches shortly after 8 pm and 4 inches around 11 pm.
2/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.05 2.5 M 27.0 M Feb. 9-10 event totals: 8.0 inches of snow and 0.51 inch liquid equivalent. Snow tapered to flurries by 2 pm, when the sun became dimly visible. Some flurries continued during the afternoon and evening. Snow has been sculpted into fantastic shapes and drifts by strong westerly to northwesterly winds, which routinely gusted above 40 mph (per nearby KMRB reports). In fact, many north-to-south-oriented roads in this area are drifted shut due to blown snow drifting into "canyons" left by plows following the Feb. 5-6 storm. Our neighborhood is littered with abandoned cars that became stuck in drifted snow.
2/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 23.0 M Low temperature: 23 degrees F. On Feb. 11, snow settled and compacted a bit under mostly sunny skies.

2/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.05 0.5 M 21.0 M Periods of light snow fell during the afternoon and evening. Seasonal snowfall of 73.4 inches is a record for this location (previously, 64.1 inches in 2002-03). February snowfall of 38.0 inches is second only to the 42.5-inch total of February 2003.
2/17/2010 7:00 AM T T M 20.0 M Scattered snow flurries developed during the pre-dawn hours. This is the 12th consecutive observation with at least a 20-inch snow cover.
2/18/2010 7:00 AM T T M 19.0 M Today's low was a relatively mild 30 degrees F, but winds howled overnight; gusts to 40 mph have been reported at nearby Winchester Regional Airport. Snow flurries frequently danced through the air on Feb. 17, especially during the morning and mid-day hours.
2/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.0 M Breezy weather continues. Berkeley Co. schools were open on Feb. 18 -- albeit on a 2-hour delay -- for the first time since Feb. 4.
2/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.0 M Lows on Feb. 19 and 20 were quite reasonable, at 32 and 30 degrees F, respectively. Feb. 19 was our best day of melting yet, but a substantial snow cover remains.
2/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.0 M Low today: 28 degrees F. This is the sixteenth consecutive observation with at least a foot of snow on the ground. On Saturday, a pesky cirrus overcast limited melting potential.
2/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 M Despite increasing cloudiness Sunday afternoon and overnight, there was widespread frost this morning. Although recent warmth has softened the snow, this pack has been very resilient and slow to melt.
2/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 T M 13.0 M Afternoon sleet and light rain gave way to overnight fog, with a low temperature of 34 degrees F. It was the first rain since Jan. 25 (and first rain following 44.0 inches of snow).
2/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.0 M Skies cleared overnight between storm systems.
2/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.0 M Nary a flake fell here west of the Blue Ridge. 2/26/2010 7:00 AM T 0.1 M 9.0 M A respectable squall struck just prior to 6 pm, leaving a dusting of new snow. Stray snow flurries occurred during the overnight hours, along with high winds. Gusts at nearby KMRB were clocked to 55 mph at 6 am.
2/27/2010 7:00 AM T 0.3 M 9.0 M During the morning of Feb. 26, west-northwesterly winds gusted as high as 60 mph at nearby KMRB. Wind damage in this area was mostly minor (twigs, branches, shingles, etc). Light snow developed before dark and continued for about 5 hours late into the evening, but visibilities rarely dropped below 5 miles. Gauge catch melted down to just two drops of water -- a trace. Low this morning: 29 degrees F, under mostly cloudy skies.
2/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.0 2.89 Low temperature today: 33 degrees F. February ends as it began: with snow on the ground. 3/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 T M 5.0 M Overnight low temperature: 34 degrees F. Light snow developed shortly after 3 pm and changed to rain and drizzle in the evening. Some additional snow, with no accumulation, fell during the overnight hours. The remaining snow cover has softened once again.
3/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 T M 3.0 M On March 3, early-morning snow changed to very light rain. Intermittent sprinkles continued until dark, but skies cleared overnight. Bare patches are expanding, but more than half of the ground remains covered with snow.
3/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M More than half of the open area in the vicinity of the observation site remains covered by snow, but crocuses (randomly planted in the yard several years ago) are blooming in the slowly expanding bare spots.
