Wow! what a surprise to wake up to. At 1:30pm there was light snow with strong winds. Most of it stayed horizontal with very little accumulation. However at 4:00am when we got up, there were huge chest-high drifts, and...some bare ground. We had to dig through the stuff to get out to the barn to feed the horses, then dig again to clear our way back to the house. At least this was a dry, fluffy snow that was not too hard on the back. The guage snow yielded 0.04, and a representative sampling of the ground snow measured 10.0" and it yielded 0.37" of water. |

The hail soon melted as it hit the ground. The storm stopped at 7:05pm. Rains started again at 10:05pm and it continued into the night. At 7:00am, the guage read 0.35" Incidentally, my neighbor was at the county fair last night over at Buffalo, south of Sheridan, and large quantities of pea-sized hail fell. Early warning by the sheriff got everyone and the animals under cover. |
