Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
12/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.05 1.0 0.05 T M Snowfall struggled to reach an inch, but temperature never varied more than two degrees--from 32-34--all day. It dropped to 28 at 10 p.m., but is 27 degrees now. This is our second measurable snow drop this year. It previously snowed on February 13, a nice Valentine's gift. A strong wind over the last 12 hours has kept the driveways and streets dry for morning travel.
12/28/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hard to believe the forecast shows temperatures touching 60 degrees by week's end. A high of 38 under clear skies with a cold wind from the northwest yesterday. It was 27 degrees at 10 p.m. and 24 as the sun rose with nary a cloud visible this morning. We may go from snow to rain by Saturday.
12/29/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A third straight day of clear skies. Temperature is moderating, just a hair below freezing at 31.8 this morning. Although there isn't any snow at this station, a trip 10 miles into Greensboro, revealed considerable snow and ice on southern exposures. No wind this morning.
12/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy skies (M3) this morning in advance of some rain expected over the front end of the weekend. Temperature is 38.1 degrees. Clouds (H6) arrived about noon yesterday, but the high reached 57.1 degrees. Wind backed off to just a breeze out of the WSW. New Year's Eve may be wet here.
12/31/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Temperature rose only 11 degrees from yesterday's mid-afternoon high of 57 to this morning's low of 46. A layered (M3) pattern of rolling, pinkish clouds will probably give way to a heavier, rain-soaked front expected to move through today and tomorrow affecting the New Year's holiday.
1/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Expected overnight rain has not materialized, but skies are leaden (M2) with a light ESE wind. Current temperature is 57.4 degrees, only a degree above last night's 10 p.m. reading. Yesterday was nicer than expected with a high temperature of 67.5 degrees under mostly clear skies. Some haze and (H1) clouds, but otherwise a beautiful day. Happy New Year!
1/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.59 M M M M Strange 24 hours of weather. Approaching storm front clearly visible to the northwest, but skies were clear here early yesterday morning. By 11:30 a.m., the front widened toward the bottom, drawing us back into the bad weather. There were separate hard falls throughout the afternoon with a high temperature of 61.1 degrees. By 8 p.m., everything tapered off, but overnight and again this morning some sprinkles returned. Present temperature is 56.3 degrees, so cold air has yet to move in.
1/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Back to a normal weather pattern today? With a temperature of 28.9 degrees this morning with clear skies, it looks like we've pushed out the high humidity and clouds for a few days. Temperature range yesterday as clearing took over, did not vary more than five degrees--55.4 at 10 a.m. to a high of 60.3 at 3 p.m. There is a coating of frost this morning with no wind. Time to wash the car!
1/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High temperature of 54.2 yesterday under a cloudless sky, but it felt more like 34. A little frost this morning as the sun peeks out from behind M8 cloud cover. Current reading is 32.5 degrees.
1/5/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A few light sprinkles around this morning with a temperature of 40.8 degrees. Weather seems to be deteriorating to the east. A high of 54 degrees yesterday under mostly clear skies (some H1 cloud cover). Temperature will struggle to reach that level today, and colder weather (low 20's) will follow the passing front later in the week.
1/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Cold rain began about 9 a.m. yesterday and fell off and on into the night. A misty fog rolling in about 5:45 p.m. contributed most of the moisture. The overall 24-hour rain total was only 0.08. At 5 p.m., the temperature was 46.5 degrees, the high for the day. At 10 p.m. it had dropped to 46.2. This morning, under bright, cloudless skies, it's only 42.4 degrees. A thick, yellowish haze is present on the horizon. High today is only expected to be 50 degrees with a slight warming into the weekend.
1/7/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Long strands of H1 clouds with a few contrails mixed in for what appears to be a nice day dawning. Predicted high yesterday was 50 degrees and we reached 52.2 with some H6 clouds toward afternoon. Cold and dry air is with us (34.4 overnight) and some rough weather lies ahead for the latter part of the weekend.
1/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M To look outside this morning you'd never guess that in about 48 hours the weather will take a 360-degree turn with ice and 3-6 inches of snow expected. It's 37.4 degrees this morning as the day dawns bright and clear, but a large front is rolling out of the south and drawing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. The temperature reached 54.2 yesterday with the sun poking through a changing cloud cover (H2 and H6) much of the day. A burst of very strong winds around 9 p.m. had the tall trees bending sharply.
1/9/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What has been a placid scene the last 24 hours--cloud-free skies and early winter temperatures in the low 50's, is about to change today. Forecasters predict that middle Georgia could see as much as 3-6 inches of snow by tonight and into Monday. Current temperature is 22.6 degrees with a steady, brisk wind out of the WSW. The worst place to be today is the grocery store where people not accustomed to snow, ice and cold, will get their fill in the next 12-18 hours.
1/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.69 3.0 0.98 3.0 0.98 Freezing rain and sleet atop 3 inches of overnight snow this morning with a temperature of 28 degrees. Yesterday's high temperature was 38.3 degrees. Some scattered H1 clouds at 11:30 a.m. yesterday and even some periodic sunshine during the afternoon. The approaching moisture-filled front could easily be seen to the WSW. Yesterday's temperature stayed above freezing until 10 p.m. (31.3 degrees) and when the wet snow begain the thermometer showed 32.9. This storm, moving quickly to the northeast, will leave behind dangerous driving conditions for people not used to this type of weather. Electrical outages are a possibility from ice covered lines and heavy snow-laden tree branches. The frozen rain can be clearly heard now on the crusty snow. Wind is from the WNW.
1/11/2011 8:00 AM 0.23 M M 4.0 1.38 This may be one for the Georgia record books. We still have power, but the ice crust (one eighth of an inch) on top of the three inches of snow, has made travel of any type impossible. With no secondary roads being plowed, people are literally stuck in their homes. Any melting won't begin until the temperature rises above freezing and/or some warm sunshine arrives--maybe a day or two away. There has been minor drifting from a biting and steady WNW wind. The temperature rose only one degree from 28.8 at 9 a.m. to 29.8 at 10 p.m. The high temperature yesterday was 30.6 degrees at 4:30 p.m. and is 30.9 this morning. Skies are still heavy and gray with an M2 or L7 cloud mixture.
1/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.5 0.55 The sun vainly tried to push through an H7 cloud cover early yesterday, but failed. No precipitation, but ice and snow melting began by afternoon. Standing on the thick ice layer in the street, you could see the water flowing beneath your feet. The high temperature was 35.8 degrees at 5:30 p.m., and 26.4 this morning minus any clouds and the stiff NW breeze overnight. If we get some sun and the temperature inches toward 40 degrees, we might see travel on the roadways. Many people are getting stir crazy from the enforced hunkering down in their homes the last three days. The snow depth is deceptive this morning. Although it shows three and a quarter inches, there is about a two-inch vacuum above ground level before you get to a thin layer of soft snow and the thick, glazed (slightly under an inch) ice cap.
1/13/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 0.48 Having lived in New Mexico the last eight years, I'm used to snow and ice for about six months a year. But I never took core measurements on an ice/snow cap that would hold my weight (153 pounds) without cracking. The measurements today are similar to those of yesterday, although the road cover is 95 percent gone. With a high temperature of only 34.2 degrees yesterday, more than 80 percent of the ground cover is still with us. With clear skies (a few H1 clouds to the east) and no wind at present, the melting process is going slowly. The 8 a.m. temperature reading is 22.5 degrees. A WNW, then NW wind yesterday, was of some melting help. The snow depth is still 3 inches in most locations with a 1.5-inch ice cap. The vacuum underneath is still 2 inches deep. This weather is a photographer's dream right now with the open areas looking like a giant, highly-polished gem gleaming under the shining sun.
1/14/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 0.51 Th mercury headed upward yesterday, reaching 39.4 degrees for a high at 4 p.m. The warmth (if you want to call it that) brought the overall snow/ice cover to about 60 percent. Even the snow depth dropped to 2 inches with a strong 1-inch ice covering in shaded areas. The vacuum underneath was just a shade under an inch. By the weekend with 50-degree temperatures forecast, things should be back to normal (although Greensboro schools were closed for the fourth consecutive day). Overnight low reading was 22.6 degrees and it is calm and clear this morning.
1/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 0.69 Temperature quickly recovered to a near normal level yesterday, rising 16 degrees by noon, then six more by 4 p.m. when a high of 44.4 was reached. The ice cap (most of the underlying snow has now turned to ice), was still just under three inches thick (nearly 50 percent open ground) with a one-inch vacuum below. The warmer temperatures made a dent in the white cover, but many driveways and sheltered sides of homes still have substantial ice buildup up to 12 inches. The low this morning was 26.4 degrees and rain--not snow--is expected by late Sunday into Monday. This could create some flooding problems.
1/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Brilliant sunrises and sunsets for three consecutive days. Although there has been no wind, the ice/snow pack dropped to approximately 40 percent yesterday with a high temperature of 51.4 degrees at 3:30 p.m. From 9:30 a.m. yesterday to 3:30 p.m., the reading rose 16 degrees. It's 32.0 this morning with a few H1 clouds to the east. Rain is expected in the near term, but yesterday's melt may lessen the threat of flooding. Some folks are still just emerging from their enforced home stays, but most all services are back to normal here.
1/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M No rain yet, but it's lurking out there. A star-filled night at 10 p.m. with a 38.1 temperature. H6 cirrostratus clouds moved in from the west sometime after that and this morning's low is just above freezing at 32.5 degrees. Yesterday was a mix of sun and clouds. The high H6 cover was around as the temperature rose quickly to 50 degrees by 11:30 a.m. The high of 55.0 came at 2:30 with a muted sun. It's perfectly still outside now, and the snow/ice pack has dwindled to about 25-30 percent.
1/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.44 M M T M The air is heavy (M2) with a mist/fog combination this morning. Temperature is 38.8 degrees. A steady, but light rain fell all afternoon and into the evening. The day's high was 43.2 as the rain began, then dropped to 40.5 degrees when the moisture tapered off. No wind to speak of, but yesterday was a dreary, biting cold day. The rain did accomplish one thing, it reduced the snow/ice cover to about 10 percent.
1/19/2011 8:00 AM 0.13 M M M M Awoke to heavy fog this morning with very limited visibility. Difficult to see if there's any cloud cover, but a predicted clear day may materialize once the fog burns off. Temperature is 43.7 degrees. We had two rain events yesterday--sprinkles from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., then some moderate showers beginning at 5:45 p.m. and continuing until past 10 p.m. High temperature yesterday during a cold, dreary day was 46.8 degrees at 4 p.m., and the reading barely moved through the night. Only a trace of rain recorded until near 6 p.m., then steady showers thereafter.
1/20/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A 26-degree differential from yesterday's high of 59.5 degrees at 3:45 p.m. to this morning's near freezing reading of 33.3 degrees. Yesterday's early morning fog burned off quickly, but L2 cumulus clouds rolled in for about 90 minutes. The sky then brightened again with some fluffy L1 cumulus clouds taking over as the temperature rose into the 50's. There is a light coat of frost this morning and some long, stringy H1 cirrus clouds to the east. It should be a chilly, but clear day. Some snow and artic air may blow in farther north by later today or tomorrow.
1/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Didn't know what to expect this morning, as overnight rain was predicted, but none came. The snow/ice/rain mix appears to be concentrated to the north, although dark cloud cover hangs on the horizon to the east, south and southwest from this station. A nice day yesterday until 3:10 p.m. when brisk winds from the WSW brought in some L4 and L7 coulds. The high temperature was reached at 1:45 p.m. at 55.6 degrees. We're mostly clear and cold (33.4)this morning after a night when the moon peeked in and out of traveling clouds.
1/22/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A pink glow both east and west this morning with 29.8 degrees and no wind. Some L8 cloud formations to the east, and the western horizon appears socked in. A decent day coming, we hope, the 15th this month without precipitation. Only seven bad days, and they were mostly snow and not rain. Yesterday's high was 50.0 degrees at 3:30 p.m. with long contrails and H1 cirrus clouds. Most of the heavy weather yesterday was toward the north, but the early part of the week here is uncertain for now.
1/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fronts moving in, fronts moving out. It was an unusual day on Saturday. With a bitter WSW wind pushing varying cloud formations--H6, H2--among others through the area most of the morning, the skies cleared and we were left with a hazy, but bright and pinkish day by afternoon. The high temperature was 47.3 degrees at 3 p.m. and is 31.1 this morning with some frost present. Things may change today as an M3 altocumulus cloud cover is changing slowly and blocking the rising sun somewhat. Tomorrow is expected to be wet.
1/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Brilliant pink, then yellow to the east as the sun rises. Some M3 (altocumulus) clouds, but increasing slowly. It's 33.8 this morning, and like the last three days we don't know if we're included in the bad weather sweeping across the northern part of the state. The high reading yesterday was 48.6 at 1:30 p.m. The wind is calm.
1/25/2011 8:00 AM T M M M M Th sky looks like it's about to burst. Dark, heavy M2 altostratus clouds hiding any chance of a sunrise. The temperature is 38.5 degrees, only 17 degrees lower than yesterday's 55.2 high at 3:30 p.m., and only a six-degree fall from 10 p.m. A trace of moisture sometime after 10 p.m. with a very light sprinkle now. Clouds varied yesterday from H6 (cirrostratus) to M5 (altocumulus). A stiff breeze from the north and northeast blew the clouds around, then to the southwest before dark as we experienced a bright and warm (49.5 degrees at 7 p.m.) early evening.
1/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.66 M M M M From 3:15 p.m. yesterday afternoon (41.7) until 8 a.m. this morning (42.1), the temperature has not budged more than a degree--42.3 at 5:30 p.m., the day's high of 42.4 at 6:30 p.m. and 41.9 at 10 p.m. It feels a lot colder with the heavy air, dense L7 (stratus fractus) cloud cover and a brisk WNW breeze. It has rained off and on for nearly 24 hours, but just over a half-inch of measurable precipitation was recorded in the gauge. There should be a break in this weather sometime today and temperatures may reach the upper 50's by the weekend.
1/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Long, thin, high cirrus strands this morning with a substantial frost cover. Sunrise temperature is 30.0 degrees. It was cold and windy yesterday. The day's high temperature was 49.3 degrees at 3:15 p.m. with westerly winds at 16 mph. Altocumulus (M8) clouds started to disappear about 2 p.m. and we were left with a hazy, pollution-like sky by 6 p.m. A nice string of cloudless skies and temperatures in the low 60's should be in our future.
1/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Although the temperature would need to rise 25 degrees from its early morning reading of 36.7, we could be in for a partial day in the 60's. But there's still a lot of winter left. Yesterday's high was 55.0 degrees at 4 p.m. H1 and H2 cirrus clouds took turns filling the sky, mostly in the afternoon. There was a SSW wind, but nothing like the day before. Wind from the south may help the temperature lift into the 60's, something we've not experienced in awhile. Some long H1 clouds to the east. Winter coats may hang idle today.
1/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Spring is here! Actually it's still about seven weeks away, but we had a nice touch of it yesterday with a high temperature of 60.6 degrees at 4 p.m. A beautiful day with some occasional H1 and H2 clouds. The temperature rose quickly yesterday morning, almost 14 degrees in two hours to 50.0 at 10 a.m. It was then that we knew a pleasant day was ahead. There is some frost this morning, however, at 34.2 degrees. But as the sun rises earlier every day now, the warmth also takes hold earlier. A nice weekend in store with WSW breezes and clear skies. Rain should stay away until next Tuesday or Wednesday.
1/30/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M With the entire afternoon in the 60's featuring bright blue, pollution-free skies and a slight warm wind from the WSW, what more can you say. A Great Day! The temperature rocketed 33 degrees from sunrise to 67.3 at 4 p.m. Only a few contrails to the east. The temperature dropped only six degrees overnight and it reads a balmy 47.7 this morning with some high M2 cirrus clouds. We need to enjoy the day because rain is expected tomorrow or Tuesday.
1/31/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing in the gauge yet, but it's coming. You can feel the oncoming rain in the foggy, misty air. Morning temperature is 53.4 degrees after a high yesterday of 69.3 at 3 p.m. A nice day for the most part with early H6 clouds, then some thick haze to the west by 4:15 p.m. accompanied by a WSW breeze of 8 mph. We moved into H7 coverage by 6:15 p.m. as the rain front creeped in from southern Alabama. Clear, warm days may be infrequent this week as another heavy moisture front is developing in the southwest.
2/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M The International Dark Sky Association is in the news this morning. As the first day of February dawns (at least we think it dawned), the sky is its normal color this time of year--gray. A temperature of 45.5 with solid L7 stratus fractus cloud cover. Very little rain the past 24 hours (0.03 in the gauge), but a heavy dampness with some fog is around. The sun tried to peek through the overcast yesterday, but gave up before noon. The high for the day was 57.4 at 12:30 p.m. The light rain started and stopped at least three times and around 3:30 p.m. high thunderheads were visible to the east and west. The wind was mostly calm, but there was an occasional WSW breeze.
2/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.92 M M M M Strange day to say the least. Temperature, under dark skies, started to rise at 2 p.m. (47.7 degrees) to an unusual 9:45 p.m. reading of 54.9 degrees. It seemed much colder with the wind. This morning it's 51.3 degrees with a little sun under a broken cumulus (L2) sky. Almost an inch of rain in the gauge (0.92). Lots of fog yesterday morning with an ENE wind of 6 mph. The wind picked up around 3:30 p.m. as a few sprinkles fell. The hard rain didn't begin until about 6 hours later with some rolling thunder at 9:10 p.m.
2/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A hazy, mild day yesterday with high humidity, but no rain. The thick M1 (altostratus) cloud cover seemed to be trapping the warmer air at ground level. Yesterday's wakeup temperature rose only 2.5 degrees by 1:30 p.m. The 53.8 reading was the high for the day and we avoided the predicted strong winds. There was a 5 mph breeze from the SW most of the afternoon. By 4:30 p.m. some M3 (altocumulus) clouds appeared. This morning it's 37.4, somewhat higher than a frost-producing 30 degrees we expected. There's some M2 (altostratus) clouds ahead of raw weather expected tonight or early tomorrow.
2/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.45 M M M M Rain has been falling off and on since 8:45 yesterday morning. A prediction of 2-3 inches (steady rain when gauge checked) for today with a 24-hour flood watch until 7 a.m. tomorrow. High temperature was 42.1 at 1:45 p.m. No rain between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., but it resumed sometime overnight. During that 4-hour period the temperature remained steady at 39.7 degrees. Today, the high is expected to be 39 and the low 38 degrees--not much movement. At daybreak, it's 36.3 degrees with no wind and an M2 (altostratus cloud cover).
2/5/2011 8:00 AM 1.25 M M M M Soggy would the word to describe conditions right now. The rain fell yesterday from 8-9:15 a.m., then again from 2:00 p.m. to past midnight sometime. It wasn't a drenching rain, but moderate and steady with calm winds. Yesterday's 1.25-inch rain total gives us 2.65 inches since Feb. 1. That's almost as much (2.85 inches) as January's total. We had 9 days of precipitation last month and four already this month. Obviously, it was damp, cold and dreary yesterday with a high temperature of 38.5 degrees at 12:30 p.m. This morning's low is 38.1, so, as predicted, the mercury didn't budge much yesterday. I think we're in for more of this over the Super Bowl weekend, but at least it's not snow.
2/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A crisp morning with a bright, clear sky and 32.2 degrees (-21 where I previously lived). A nice coating of frost, too, which should evaporate quickly. It was 53.4 degrees at 4 p.m. for yesterday's high temperature. The sun pushed through the H2 cirrus clouds at 10:30 a.m., and it was mostly clear by 12:30 p.m. The wind was out of the WSW all day at 6-8 mph. A beautiful sunset and the heavy rain front could be seen drifting east by 6:45 p.m. Another bout of rain expected tomorrow.
2/7/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A no news is good news day. Bright blue sky, no wind and a high temperature of 58.1 degrees at 4 p.m. The mercury lifted steadily, rising more than 15 degrees before noon, then another 11 degrees in the afternoon. The sun is trying to shine this morning with some frost and a freezing reading of 32.0 degrees. Some cirrus (H1) clouds on a day when rain is predicted.
2/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Wind and more wind! Westerly wind gusts over 10 mph dried things out overnight following an early evening rain. A cloudless sky this morning with a temperature of 35.6 degrees. But it was an interesting 24 hours. Heavy cloud cover (M2 altostratus) moved in from the east at 10 a.m. The rain, however, held off for most of the day until 5 p.m. when heavy L5 (stratocumulus) clouds formed. The high of 48.0 degrees was reached just before rolling claps of thunder hit at 6:30 p.m. along with a steady, light rain. Some fog was present from 6:30-8 p.m. and a few sprinkles fell at 10 p.m. The noisy wind bent the big pine trees until around 3 a.m., but everything is calm and drier this morning.
2/9/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The cold has arrived--28.4 degrees--as a full sun rises this morning. Now we wait on the snow expected late today or tonight. It will be the third snow day this year if it happens, quite unusual for this part of Georgia. Yesterday was a picture-perfect day. A light breeze from the west, cloudless skies and a high temperature of 51.1 degrees at 4 p.m. The 10 p.m. reading was 37.2 degrees with stars galore.
2/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.10 2.0 0.10 2.0 0.10 Overnight snow/sleet mixture covers the open ground this morning with a 35.1 temperature reading. We were lightly brushed by the front as it heads northeast. There are more widespread breaks in the M2 (altostratus) cloud cover. Small clumps of 2-inch snow depths, but the cover is mostly evaporating sleet. Only water in the gauge this morning. Yesterday's high temperature was 50.9 degrees at 1:30 p.m. M5 (altocumulus) clouds started to thicken around 2:30 p.m. with a SSE wind of 3 mph. There were some cloud breaks at 5 p.m., and no moisture before 10 p.m.
2/11/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Broken altocumulus (M8) clouds permitted a quick snow melt yesterday morning. By 12:30 p.m. no trace of the white stuff remained. The temperatue reached its high of 49.8 degrees with a muted sky at 3:30 p.m. The 10 p.m. level was 43.2 degrees with overcast. A long opening of clear sky this morning at the horizon as M2 (altostratus) cloudiness persists. The low is 37.2 degrees and the 60's have been promised for the next few days.
2/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds and sun took turns yesterday dominating the weather. Early morning (10 a.m.) M2 (altostratus) cover gave the impression it would be a rotten day. The sun kept pushing throughout the day until 4 p.m. when the high temperature of 52.3 degrees was recorded. Lots of stars last night as the temperature dropped to 30.6 degrees, five degrees warmer than predicted. Bright, clear sky now with those 60's waiting in the wings.
2/13/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The gauge may be dry for a few days. Although we haven't hit the 60-degree mark, it's a possibility as the new week dawns. With a bright blue backdrop, the temperature rose 28 degrees yesterday from sunrise to a 58.3 high reading at 3:30 p.m. Same senario today with 33.1 degrees now, no wind and a cloudless sky.
2/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Away for a couple days, but not much to report anyway. Had our fourth straight day of perfect weather yesterday after receiving some precipitation on six of the previous 10 days. Is spring on its way? A cloudless sky again this morning with a 40.6-degree temperature reading.
2/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An M9 (altocumulus) chaotic sky this morning with a 41.4 temperature reading. There may be rain in our immediate future, but sunrise often leads to cloud breakup and a pleasant day. The nearly-full (Friday) moon was in evidence last night after a breezy day-- wind out of the northeast, then east southeast at 6-8 mph-- and a high at 3 p.m. of 63.5 degrees. Yesterday morning at this time we had stringy, wavy cirrus clouds with contrails, but they dissolved as the day progressed.
2/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sixth consecutive day without precipitation and highest early morning temperature this year-- 51.3 degrees. In the last three weeks (21 days) 15 have been dry with a similar outlook for the next few days. Heavy fog this morning with limited visibility. Yesterday's high was 63.7 degrees at 1:45 p.m., a reading kept out of the 70's by an M2 (altostratus) cloud cover most of the day.
2/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Instead of checking precipitation measurements in the gauge these days, I'm cleaning out the bugs and debris collected inside. I know we'll pay for this nice weather soon, but while we can we're enjoying the dramatic switch from cold, rain and snow to mild temperatures, blue skies and a light breeze. The latter is coming in from the SSE at 3-5 mph, giving us a high of 68.5 degrees yesterday at 4 p.m. with fluffy L1 (cumulus) clouds. No repeat of yesterday morning's thick fog (dissipated at 11:30 a.m.) with a 49.5 reading today at sunrise.
2/19/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Visibility less than 500 yards this morning, but the sun is quickly pushing out the fog. Sunrise temperature is 51.4 degrees with no air moving. Forecasters missed on yesterday's expected high of 75 degrees, but the 72.9 reading at 3:45 p.m. was our first foray into the 70's this year. But we need to remember that there's still a month left of winter (March 21st). Cold fronts can still bring us some nasty weather. A lot of haze and some L1 cumulus clouds yesterday with a SW wind of 8 mph and occasional gusts above that figure.
2/20/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day yesterday-- fog did not burn off until 9:30 a.m., but we were left with a warm (high of 71.8 degrees at 2 p.m.), outside activity day. Heavy M2 (altostratus) clouds this morning with a wakeup temperature of 55.6 degrees. Humidity is 49 percent and the pressure is 29.96. Sun may push cloudiness out or some sprinkles are in store.
2/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We're being lulled into a false sense of security here as the sunny, warm days pile up. Temperature didn't move more than 10.5 degrees yesterday with a high of 65.1 at 5 p.m. Rain may return Friday and farmers, already talking about how dry it has become, will welcome it. It was a haze-dominated day yesterday, with no sun until 11:30 a.m. We had a stiff (8 mph) wind from the ENE, then ESE at 10 p.m. Humidity is 48 percent and the low temperature this morning is 55.4 degrees.
2/22/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M If you planned to wash your car here, it's probably too late! We awakened to our 12th consecutive day without moisture and a warm, muggy 61.2 degrees. A cloud-free sky is expected to give way to some overcast with rain predicted for late tomorrow or Friday. Our 2.84 inches of the wet stuff fell in the first 10 days of the month. The wind blew from the southwest, then the northwest yesterday at a 10-12 mph clip. We had altostratus and later some stratocumulus clouds mixed with sunshine. The high was 72.1 degrees at 3:30 p.m., so it fell only 11 degrees until this morning. Humidity is 54 percent with a pressure of 29.67 and steady.
2/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Almost two weeks without rain now, so the long dry spell two years ago is a hot conversation topic again. There is hope for Friday as a small front is expected. We were chilly at daybreak with a 43.5-degree temperature. A few high cirrus (H1) clouds and nearly calm winds. A contrast from yesterday when it blew out of the WSW at 13 mph with stratocumulus (L4) clouds during mid-afternoon. By 4:30 p.m. the wind switched to the WNW at 11 mph and the skies turned clear. The high temperature was 75.0 degrees at 2:30 p.m.
2/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M On the 14th day it may finally rain! Actually, the M3 (altocumulus) clouds might break up with warm sunshine to leave us with a decent day. A thin, fast-moving moisture front moves through tonight or tomorrow morning. It's 49.3 degrees this morning with the humidity at 49 percent and pressure at 29.94 inches. The high yesterday was 66.3 degrees at 2 p.m. It was clear and calm-- perfect outdoor recreational weather.
2/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.27 M M M M It may have been short, but sweet. After 14 days without precipitation, rain begain sometime after midnight and had slowed to almost nothing this morning. There are still M2 (altostratus) clouds about to hide the sun and the temperature is 59.2 degrees. It was a hazy day yesterday with wind from the southeast, then the south at 7-8 mph. High temperature was 66 degrees at 4 p.m. The muggy conditions were present at 10 p.m., but the worst of what we're going to get has apparently passed.
2/26/2011 8:00 AM T M M M M Temperature rising quickly this morning from a low of 41.2 degrees at sunrise to 47.8 at 8 a.m. It's a cloudless and bright blue sky with a slight wind from the WNW. This is in contrast to a very windy day yesterday, first from the WSW, then the west, and at 10 p.m. the northwest. The highest reading was 14 mph at noon. Yesterday's fast rain front moved to the northeast by 8:40 a.m. and the full sun followed by 11 a.m. We're due for another rough weather spell on Monday with the posssibility of tornadoes. Lots of dew on everything this morning.
2/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High temperature (66.7 degrees) wasn't reached until 4:30 p.m. yesterday. The mercury rose 11 degrees from 8-9 a.m., but then took its time arriving at the high for the day. And that day was clear and calm-- perfect for outside fun. Today is beginning much the same way with 50.4 degrees as the sun rises. A bit more low haze this morning. Conditions may worsen later with a good-sized rain front arriving from the southwest.
2/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The cloud changes will be numerous today as a rain front arrives after sunset. The H4 cirrus clouds are becoming more dense. They are mixed with more rain-filled L4 (stratocumulus) clouds with a few rain streams drying up as they head for the ground. The temperature now is 59.9 degrees. It was windy yesterday from the SSW (9 mph), then the southeast (8 mph) by 5 p.m. when the high temperature of 75.6 degrees (highest this year thus far) was reached. The temperature probably won't rise as quickly as yesterday-- 19 degrees from 8-10 a.m.
3/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.63 M M M M It's not a scientific theory, but "In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion," works well in middle Georgia! On the last day of February, some rough weather raced through this area in just over an hour last night. No tornadoes, but plenty of thunder, lightning and rain (0.63 in 65 minutes). A mix of H2 cirrus clouds and sun at 10:30 a.m., then L7 stratus fractus clouds roll in, driven by a SSW wind of 22 mph. The tornado watch just missed us as the high temperature of 73.6 degrees was reached at 4 p.m. It became very dark at 5:30 p.m. (almost a yellowish glow). Thunder and lightning in the WSW at 7:08 p.m. The heavy wind-driven storm moved through from 7:15 to 8:20 p.m. The temperature dropped 8 degrees after the storm. It's 51.4 degrees this morning and the sun is pushing through some M3 (altocumulus) clouds.
3/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little technical difficulty in filing my report yesterday, but the last two days have been very much alike. Clear skies, mild temperatures and a soft breeze (3 mph) from the east on Tuesday. A little warmer this morning than yesterday-- 47.7 degrees, but H2 cirrus strands with some contrails are present. Yesterday's high was 66.2 degrees at 2 p.m. with a 5-mph wind from the WSW. Some rough weather again predicted for Friday or Saturday.
3/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Temperature has dropped 6 degrees in the past hour to 42.8. The rain, forecast for tonight and most of the weekend, has already arrived. The wakeup call included light rain, calm winds and a socked-in sky. The L7 (stratus fractus) cloud cover doesn't look like a 10 percent chance of moisture. Yesterday's high temperature of 67.3 degrees came at 4 p.m. during a pleasant, but windy day. The sky was mostly clear with a few H1 (cirrus) clouds at 7 p.m. The wind was from the east at 8 mph early in the day, then later shifted to the ESE at 10 mph.
3/5/2011 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Yesterday was a reminder that spring is not as close as you think. Flowers are sprouting on their own or being planted in yards, but a raw day where the temperature didn't move more than 7 degrees, brought us down to earth. A dreary sky lightened somewhat at 11:30 a.m., followed by the end of the very light rain. A NNE wind at 5 mph made it feel like winter outside. The wind switched to the ENE at 3 mph by noon, and the high for the day at 50.0 degrees was reached by 3 p.m. It was still 50 an hour later and is only 52.3 degrees this morning with a heavy mist hanging in the air. An L7 (stratus fractus) sky, so we're in for some more moisture.
3/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.66 M M M M A windy morning--11 mph from the SSE--and the threat of more rain completing a weekend washout. Difficult to measure the starting and stopping of the rain yesterday because that's all it did. The high temperature of 60.4 degrees froze at that spot for 75 minutes at 4:15 p.m. A brisk wind (5-6 mph) most of the day. Solid pea soup cloud cover this morning (L7--stratus fractus), but no rain and 59.7 degrees at present.
3/7/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Nippy morning (37.4 degrees, reminding us that winter is still here), but frost is eroding quickly as a bright sun rises. A 15 mph wind out of the WNW blew the rain front through yesterday morning. The temperature actually dropped 1.2 degrees to 58.5 by noon, and the high was only 60.8 at 2:45 p.m. We had scattered L1 cumulus clouds most of the afternoon, but the temperature started to fall rapidly after 5:30 p.m. as the wind shifted to the west at 8 mph. It was already 43.3 degrees at 10 p.m.
3/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A translucent sky (H7 cirrostratus) most of the day. The mercury struggled to reach its high of 60.4 degrees at 3 p.m. A pollen-like haze persisted until 6:10 p.m. when an M8 (altocumulus) cover took over. More precipitation is expected tomorrow night. We've had moisture on five of the eight days this month for a 1.40 inches total. Sunrise temperature, with a cloudless sky and no wind, was 41.5 degrees.
3/9/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There's the potential for dangerous weather at this station today. Heavy and slow moving rain from the WSW is nearly upon us and we're just outside the tornado watch area to the south. It's 57.6 degrees this morning with an ESE wind at 6 mph. Dense stratus fractus (L7) clouds fully cover everything. Yesterday's high temperature was 65.8 degrees at 3:30 p.m. The sky was partially translucent again, but heavier, lower (L7) clouds began to arrive at 7:30 p.m.
3/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.91 M M M M Off and on rain, fog, wind from three directions--ESE, SE, E and W. High yesterday of 60.4 degrees at 1:30 and low this morning of 55.2. Light rain and a westerly wind at 8 mph.
3/11/2011 8:00 AM T M M M M The light leftover sprinkles stopped in mid-morning yesterday, and strong winds from the west all day dried things out quickly. Not much movement in the temperature, with 58.1 degrees the high at 12:45 p.m. Cumulus (L1) and stratocumulus (L4) clouds were present all day. Winds blew in the 12-14 mph range with occasional gusts above 20 mph. It's 43.9 degrees this morning with a WNW wind at 9 mph. Mostly sunny with some scattered L1 clouds.
3/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High and low temperature readings will change by an hour with daylight savings time returning. The low reading this morning of 38.1 rose 12 degrees in 30 minutes to the present 50.7. The wind was gusty from the west at 10-12 mph most of yesterday. A clear day with very few L1 (cumulus) clouds. The high temperature was 59.0 degrees at 4 p.m. A nice weekend in store with no rain and a possibility of temperatures in the 70's. Wind slight at the moment from the SW at 3 mph.
3/13/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M One down, one to go! Not much to say about a perfect day yesterday with one more promised today before rain returns. With clear skies and a 71.4 high temperature reading at 3:45 p.m. yesterday, you couldn't ask for a better day. It's 48.6 degrees this morning on the first day of daylight saving time. Considerable haze on the horizon all around, but otherwise clear with no wind.
3/14/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An enjoyable weekend-- don't have that many doubles this time of year. Two days of nearly perfect weather may give way to some moisture today. It was 52.7 degrees this morning with some haze and L4 (stratocumulus) clouds spreading in from the east. Yesterday's 75.9 reading was the highest temperature recorded this year. The temperature bolted qickly during the morning into the high 60's, then crept to the high at 5 p.m. with some low L1 (cumulus) clouds. It was a pleasant 61.3 degrees by 10 p.m.
3/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It looks like an umbrella was opened above us with an M2 (altostratus) cover pushing down a 360-degree horizon opening of smoggy, pink light this morning. You can smell rain, but we may be on the southwestern cusp of the front moving to the northeast. We started with translucent H7 (cirrostratus) clouds yesterday morning. The sun vainly tried to break through the soup of rotating M8 (altocumulus) and M2 (altostratus) cover. The smog/haze was thick enough to block a view of the clouds. It was 74.1 degrees at 4:30 p.m. and it's 58.3 this morning. The temperature rose only 4.8 degrees overnight. There was some wind (7 mph) from the south at 6:30 last night, but it has switched to the east at 4 mph this morning.
3/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.47 M M M M Humid and foggy with visibility limited to a quarter-mile this morning. It's 51.1 degrees with an L7 (stratus fractus) cloud cover. A steady, cold rain dropped yesterday morning's temperature by 6.3 degrees after sunrise (which we didn't see). By 2:15 p.m. the sun was peeking through, but the rain, which had ended by 3:30 p.m., picked back up again for 10 minutes at 4:20 p.m. The high for the day, 63.1 degrees, was reached at this point. Rain total just shy of a half-inch.
3/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M One lone contrail as a pinkish haze gives way to the morning sun. Plenty of dew about and a wakeup temperature of 42.6 degrees. Looks like a nice day with nary a cloud visible. Yesterday morning's fog burned off by 9:30 and the temperature rose 12 degrees in the next 90 minutes. A few L1 (cumulus) clouds and a southeast wind at 6 mph. High for the day was 66.4 degrees at 2:10 p.m.
3/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was a superb day for St. Patrick's festivities, especially outside where the temperature didn't hit its high of 74.3 degrees until 6 p.m. Nice picnic weather. It's 50.7 degrees this morning with the usual horizon haze preceeding sunrise. Looks like another clear, cloudless outdoors day.
3/19/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hard to believe that tomorrow is the first day of spring. We had summer-like conditions again yesterday--no wind, a clear sky all day and a high temperature of 81.5 degrees at 4:15 p.m. That was a rise of nearly 31 degrees for the day and the first time we've been in the 80's. It has also rained only once in the past seven days. It's 58.1 degrees this morning as the bright sun burns off the haze and dew. Look for a bigger, brighter "Supermoon" at sunset tonight. First one in 19 years.
3/20/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A large smoke cloud coming from Jones County (near Gray) covered the sun yesterday afternoon. The smell from the unknown fire reached this station by 8 p.m. The high temperature, kept down by the thick haze, was 85.1 degrees at 4:45 p.m. It's 59.2 this morning with some air movement from the WNW. High H1 cirrus strands were present yesterday, but no wind and a summer-like muggy feeling, made for an unpleasant afternoon. The "Supermoon" did lighten things up after sunset, however, so the smoke had thinned by 8:15 p.m.
3/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A solid mass of M2 (altostratus) or L7 (stratus fractus) clouds during the past 24 hours. But the more unique aspect of yesterday's weather was that the temperature did not vary more than 5.9 degrees in 24 hours. The high was 65.8 at 1:40 p.m. and it's 59.9 this morning with some fog and more of the same cloud cover. No rain yet, but despite the poor conditions we should get a break soon--moisture or sun.
3/22/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's pollen season, the time of year when car wash companies make a bundle and the allergy sufferers rub their eyes furiously and cough a lot. The green dust-like covering is everywhere. It even created such a haze yesterday that definition of L1 and L2 (cumulus) clouds was difficult. The sun popped out this morning with a 57.6-degree temperature. A full sun didn't arrive yesterday until 5 p.m. We just missed the 80's with 79.9 degrees at 3:50 p.m. There's one long contrail this morning in an otherwise clear sky. A warm day is expected with the possibility of rain tomorrow evening.
3/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A middle-of-the-day temperature (61.0 degrees) this morning. Sun partially hidden by fast-moving L2 cumulus clouds pushed southwest to northeast by 5-mph winds. A few scattered high cirrus clouds yesterday as the temperature rose steadily to a high of 83.5 degrees at 3:45 p.m. A typical spring day without the showers, but they may be about today or tonight.
3/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Wind-driven flames devoured the lawn, shrubs and flowers of the neighbor behind me yesterday. Fortunately, volunteer firemen saved this house, but they were out again later to snuff out another nearby brush blaze. The southwest wind at 15-mph (with higher gusts) was taking no prisoners. The fire danger is becoming severe near this station. It's dry and hazy with pine pollen covering everything. Smoke was in the air and predicted overnight rain never came. We've now had only three days of measurable moisture in the last 17. High temperature at sunrise was 61.2 degrees and 81.5 at 2:50 p.m. yesterday the high. The temperature moved only 1.5 degrees in over two hours during the afternoon. Some hard to see cumulus clouds yesterday, but clear this morning.
3/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful, clear, but dry day. Fire danger remained high with wind out of the WSW at 10 mph during the morning, then a switch to the west at 16 mph by mid-afternoon. The overnight low temperature was 42.6 degrees and the high yesterday was 69.8. That reading came at 3:30 p.m. and stayed that way until 4:45 p.m. We're hoping for rain over the weekend, but not getting our hopes up.
3/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Two cloud layers this morning, but no rain from either one. High M8 altocumulus rain-free clouds with a spotty layer of L7 stratus fractus underneath. Damp outside with a 55.6 mercury reading, but an uncertain day ahead. Possible rain for the weekend, but the heaviest part of the front is to our north. Ten consecutive days without rain and only .47 in the last 15 days. Some scattered H1 cirrus clouds yesterday, otherwise clear and calm with developing haze at noon. High temperature came late--68.5 degrees--at 5:30 p.m. Sunsets have been spectacular the last three nights.
3/27/2011 8:00 AM 1.06 M M M M It finally came with a vengeance! After days of fire danger, we switched to tornado warnings yesterday as the rain pelted us all day and through the night. The lightning and thunder was at its worst overnight. The two heaviest bursts of rain came in the late morning and near dinner time. Still misting this morning with 50.2 degrees. Yesterday's high was 63.1 degrees at 4:10 p.m. The threat of continued rain, thunder and lightning continues today.
3/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.59 M M M M Although yesterday was to have been a rain day, it only came down for about 50 minutes from 8-9 a.m., then held off until a gully-washer hit this morning around 7 a.m. It's not raining now with a chilly 44.2 degrees, but more precipitation is in store for us. Yesterday's temperature didn't budge much from the daybreak 50.2 to 49.5 at 10 p.m. The high was 51.8 degrees at 11:15 a.m. Wind was mostly calm until early this morning, and thunder and lightning were present at 1 a.m. and 3:15 a.m.
3/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.14 M M M M Raining hard yesterday morning at this time with two heavy bursts at 8:05 and 9:45 a.m., but we were done for the day by 10:15 a.m. A total of 1.79 inches in the last three days, but a respite is predicted today before another large front hits tomorrow or Thursday. Haven't seen the sun since last Friday. The temperature is 46.4 degrees this morning with a dissolving (east) L7 stratus fractus cloud cover. The wind was from the east at 5 mph most of yesterday morning, then calm thereafter. The temperature didn't move much--6.9 degrees--and didn't reach its high of 51.1 degrees until 5 p.m.
3/30/2011 8:00 AM 0.34 M M M M Rolling thunder and a pelting rain this morning, sometimes moderate, sometimes heavy. A NNW wind at 6 mph and a 53.8 temperature reading as we look forward to another wet day. Although there was no precipitation yesterday, and the sun did peek out around 8:45 a.m. for about 30 minutes, leaden skies returned shortly thereafter. We had a moderate wind from the NE at 3 mph (1 p.m.), then a switch to the SE at 6 mph by 4 p.m. The mercury barely moved yesterday. The high of 60.6 degrees at 2 p.m., remained that way for more than an hour.
3/31/2011 8:00 AM 0.43 M M M M "In Like A Lamb, Out Like A Lion." We fit the old adage to a tee this year--2.56 inches of rain in the past five days with more expected today. Gloomy this morning, 55.6 degrees and no wind. Not raining at the moment, but 0.04 inches in the last two hours to give us 0.43 inches for the last 24 hours. Altostratus (M2) cloud cover all day yesterday with a little light at 2 p.m. The rain stopped at 11:30 a.m. and the temperature practically "froze" from 2-5:40 p.m., going from 62.6 degrees to 62.8 degrees. The latter reading was the high for the day.
4/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.17 M M M M Moisture in the air, dew on the ground and mid-level altostratus (M2) clouds in the sky. The morning temperature is 48.4 degrees after a high yesterday of 64.0 degrees at 4 p.m. Rain tapered off by 9 a.m. and the sun broke through at 2:30 p.m. By 5:30 p.m. the sky was 80 percent clear, then a cold front dropped the temperature almost 13 degrees to 50.9 at 10 p.m. Our six-day rain total was 2.73 inches.
4/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M First day in a week that the gauge didn't need checking. Not a perfect day yesterday, but it was close. Hazy with H2 (cirrus) clouds hiding an in-and-out sun. High temperature (63.7 degrees) wasn't reached until 5:20 p.m., then it fell 10 degrees by 9:30 p.m. A brisk WSW wind at 12 mph most of the day. It's 46.2 degrees with considerable dew this morning, but there's a full sun to burn it off quickly. We may hit the 80's by tomorrow and into Monday, so some fair weather is ahead.
4/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Windy and hazy, but otherwise a nice day to be outside. In the spring with its rough weather, the pleasant days between storms are welcome. The wind from the west was blowing at 10-15 mph with gusts to 20 yesterday. The high temperature was 70.9 degrees at 4 p.m. and it didn't begin dropping until after 5 p.m. This morning's low is 47.5 degrees with a bright sun and nary a cloud to report.
4/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yellow on the east horizon and pink to the west. A nice spring morning ahead, hopefully, with rain a possibility for tonight or tomorrow. April 3 and the air conditioning was on in the truck already yesterday with the temperature surging past 80 by late in the day. Considerable haze yesterday with a southeast, then southerly wind at 8-10 mph much of the day. Some criss-crossing contrails this morning and 55.0 degrees.
4/5/2011 8:00 AM 0.88 M M M M Having trouble logging on and sending extensive report.
