Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Sunny and dry other than morning dew. The grass is starting to get crunchy underfoot.
10/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No moisture whatsoever, not even dew
10/3/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Dew again and cool this afternoon
10/4/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Heavy dew and 41 degrees...cold enough to see my breath but ironically, couldn't see steam coming out of any of the roosters' mouths. I guess they aren't full of hot air!
10/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 46 degrees and totally dry; no rain predicted for the near future.
10/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warmer this AM (50 degrees) but still not a drop of moisture
10/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I guess the one up-side of having unseasonably warm temperatures (supposed to be nearly 90 today) and no rain is that I'm not mowing...
10/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 48 degrees and the hope that by Monday we will have rain
10/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.43 M M M M Yesterday's rain came with much lightning. This morning there was low-lying fog and 54 degrees. Incredibly, the leaves seem to have turned gold and yellow literally overnight!
10/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Rainfall recorded does not reflect what fell in town which I suspect was much more. The trees and shrubs are now half green and half fall colors.
10/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 42 degrees and the first time this season we've turned on the furnace
10/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cool (47*) but sunny and bright; supposed to be in the low 80s later. Great day for a picnic!
10/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Absoulutely beautiful, if hot, day!
10/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cool, clear morning and warm enough now (4 PM) that I have the ceiling fan on. No moisture though. Oh yes, terns migrating through so cold weather is on its way.
10/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 57 degrees at 7 AM and slightly dew-ey when I went out to open the chicken house door
10/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M We didn't get rain last night but just across the border in Oklahoma someone must have judging by the way the skies were lit up last night by lightning
10/20/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Chilly this AM and humid so there was probably dew on the grass; supposed to be in the 80s again
10/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not one bit of moisture but plenty predicted for later today and much cooler next week
10/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Where is all the rain that was predicted? Looks like folks east of I-135 didn't get much.
10/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M It rained heavily in the city at about noon yesterday but was lighter at my place
10/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 58 degrees this morning; days are getting shorter and cooler so I guess fall really is here
10/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We had a LOT of wind blow through last night and as I ran outdoors to check on the chickens I caught two or three sprinkles on the face...as far as I know that was the extent of our "rain"
10/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 39 degrees here now and our bean vines are still growing so we must have dodged a freeze yet again
10/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Absolutely beautiful weather for the big Arkalalah parade (10/30); saw the first bald eagle of the season. Usually don't see them until mid-November.
11/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 45 degrees and not a drop of water anywhere; the ponds off of the bypass are at the lowest level I can remember
11/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 45 degrees at 7:30 AM; storms to the north of us yesterday
11/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 37 degrees and nary a cloud in the sky
11/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 41.7 degrees now but yesterday we were the warmest in the state...nearly 80 degrees! Yee-hah!
11/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The total accumulated moisture, of any kind, for the weekend is a big fat ZERO. It's getting dry folks!
11/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cool but brilliantly sunny out...gonna be another warm day
11/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 57 degrees here and probably one of the last warm days we'll have for a while. I for one am looking forward to the rain coming!
11/11/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M It just started sprinkling right now, just as I was going to put in 0.00", SO, by tomorrow's report I should have something besides zeros. Wonderful!
11/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.43 M M M M This very welcome rain fell in two batches: .30 from 8:30-noonish yesterday and .13 at about 4:30 this morning. This last rain came with a thunderstorm.
11/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.38 M M M M Bright and sunny, perfect weather for raking leaves
11/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M I suspect Ark City proper got more rain than we did because the road to church and the ground around the church itself was wet as if there had been a heavy rain.
11/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The talk at church yesterday was how the baby wheat is lovin' the weekend's rain. The rain came just when it should have and for that we are thankful.
11/16/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Oldest son brought one of the Polish hens in the kitchen and her feet were wet so there must have been dew overnight; bright and clear now
11/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I noticed that the amounts of rain we can put in have jumped dramatically! Is this for snow? Gonna be cool here and rain is predicted.
11/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.17 M M M M The rain gauge was frosted shut and the rain inside frozen at an angle so this actual amount might be off. The guineas sure don't like frozen grass!
11/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The daily rain report amounts are all now less than 1". Why do the amounts keep changing? No change here...sunny and beautiful.
11/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
11/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M I'm pretty sure we got rain early Sunday morning and nothing today. I did not check the gauge Sunday but the sidewalks and roads were wet.
11/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cloudless day!
11/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There's going to be a change in the weather if the color this morning (golden yellow) and the crazy behavior of the guineas and chickens is any indication!
11/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Was gone all weekend so don't know what might have fallen from 11/25-28. Where I was in MO had rain, sleet and snow on Thanksgiving day.
11/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 30 degrees and a cloudless sky
12/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 22 degrees and the chickens don't like the cold!
12/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I'm sure enjoying the warmer temperatures! Especially since I know they won't last.
12/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I didn't record our rainfall yesterday but it was the same as today's...nothing.
12/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frosty and cold but it sounds like more is coming!
12/8/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Heavy fog rolled in about 7:45 AM and has reduced visibility to less than 1/4 mile. However, in town it's nearly clear...weird!
12/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cold enough this morning that the roosters' crows came out in clouds of steam...
12/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I'm assuming the cold front has not gotten here yet 'cause it's still in the 40s. I'm glad too 'cause I've got outdoor chores to do.
12/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Quite cold this morning, 20 degrees. Guess I'll be using the wood stove today.
12/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Just how many different ways can report that there's been no rain?
12/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Parts north of me got ice yesterday but SE Kansas is dry as always.
12/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like western Kanas got snow...we are still dry.
12/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M The amount recorded fell between 12/21 and 12/26, when we were in western Kansas.
12/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M This winter is so weird! It feels like spring outside...must be in the upper 50s at least.
12/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M For all the crashing, banging and blowing that went on earlier this morning, we hardly got any rain.
1/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost still on the ground when we went to church at about 9:15.
1/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M According to the local weather forecast the next seven days is going to be a repeat of the last seven...dry.
1/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I'm sure enjoying this not-so-cold winter!
1/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yet another day without rain! But, how can you complain when the temp is up in the 50s?
1/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We've got two days to get ready for the snowy, cold blast acomin'! Bring it on...
1/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For sure, it's going to get mighty cold this weekend but time will tell if why get any snow. We will take what we get.
1/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The kids and I got a laugh this morning watching out Polish roosters try to strut across the yard but instead be blown sideways.
1/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 1.0 0.10 1.0 0.10 It started snowing yesterday afternoon and then it's been start and stop ever since. Still, we've only recieved an inch. It snowed overnight and at 8:15 AM, is still snowing.
1/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.15 1.5 0.15 2.5 0.25 Six degrees when the kids left for school so I bet the snow is crunchy underfoot.
1/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 0.10 No chance of the snow melting yesterday since our high was only 19 degrees. We do however have some lethal looking icicles!
1/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 M As far as I know we have not had any below zero temperatures this week but still, when your kids are leaving for school and it's 2 degrees, that's cold enough!
1/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.5 T At 3:50 PM most of the snow is gone and the eaves are dripping steadily. "Warm" enough that oldest son was able to feed the chickens without a coat on.
1/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I didn't record rainfall all weekend but as it turns out, we didn't get anything to record. We still have a few patches of snow left, primarily in the shelter belts and in the shadow of the back porch.
1/18/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M There is no moisture in the gauge but we did have sprinkles off and on yesterday afternoon.
1/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 11:30 AM here and not a drop of rain or snow yet. According to the radar though it's on its way.
1/20/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M The snow that fell last night looks like sparkly fairy dust in the bright sunshine. Why school has been cancelled is beyond me 'cause at least in my yard, there's more grass than snow.
1/21/2011 7:00 AM T M M T T At least 80% of the snow and ice that was on the ground yesterday is gone. Must not have provided much moisture though because our guineas were taking dust baths, not mud baths, in the backyard in the afternoon.
1/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
1/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
1/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
1/25/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M Frost this morning that stuck around 'til at least noon when I was driving through town and found wet streets where there was deep shade.
1/26/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M 2nd day of heavy frost...the only moisture we have gotten in days though so I'm not complaining.
1/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I am really looking forward to the next two days' higher-than-normal temperatures!
1/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Unseasonably warm and a perfect day to trim trees
1/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Finished up preparing for the big storm. According to the weatherman we are in the 12-16" band, if it goes as far into Kansas as they think. Oh joy!
1/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's hazy right now and the temperature really isn't too bad...so, I am going shopping this morning instead of tomorrow, when the wind chill is supposed to be down around -30! My kids are very excited about another potential snow day.
2/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.21 1.2 0.21 1.2 0.21 Once again, the kids are out of school with less than 2" of snow on the ground and as far as I can tell, no ice. But it is awfully cold right now (5 degrees) and with the wind blowing, it would be miserable for the ones at the bus stops. Still snowing mini flakes at 9 AM.
2/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.65 5.0 0.60 5.0 0.60 One degree when hubby left for work; 7 degrees now at 10 AM. The official snow total for Ark City is 10" but at our location I couldn't find even a 10" drift; the average in our yard is 5". But it's still bad enough that even with a shoveled path out of their door, our chickens don't want to venture out.
2/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.5 0.55 -1 degrees when everyone went back to school...BRRR! There was a little melting yesterday off of the roof where I had to break down and feed the guineas. They have been in the shelter belt since the storm.
2/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.5 0.47 Looks like this snow is going to be here for a while with temperatures below zero at night. However, there was a little melting going on yesterday judging by the bare patches appearing in the back yard.
2/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 0.57 According to the opening map, our area got moisture last night. I didn't have my gauge out and can't see that the snow is disturbed or added to so I'm guessing we didn't get anything. The bare patches in the yard are getting bigger.
2/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 0.47 The core sample I took was frozen solid, I'm assuming because of the thawing that occurred yesterday. Probably 75% of last week's snow is melted, just in time for more.
2/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At present (8:10AM) it is so windy that our big Cochin rooster was being blown sideways across the yard and in fact, may be blown our thermometer sensor away because the digit thermometer is registering --. And, there is nary a snowflake though the radar says the storm is directly above us.
2/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.97 6.5 0.97 6.5 0.97 Most of this snow came overnight. It is sunny right now and still snowing so it that the devil beating the Snow Queen? (In the summer, when it rains and the sun is out I tell my kids it's the devil beating his wife...)
2/10/2011 7:00 AM T M M 6.5 0.80 How can it be so bright and sunny and yet so frigid? It's a bitingly cold -5 here. Cold enough that the canned cat food was steaming when I set it on the back porch.
2/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.5 0.60 Amazingly, even with the high only 20 degrees yesterday, there was a little melting going on. And today, the melting is in earnest.
2/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.5 0.99 I've been taking my core samples from the same area each day and I'm amazed at how different the melted values are each time. By tomorrow there will be a LOT less snow on the ground.
2/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 0.10 The melted core value I entered is a total guess since what snow is left is frozen solid. I'm pretty sure that I won't get an accurate depth measurement if I have to chip at ice. In the area where I normally get core samples about 80% of the snow melted over the weekend.
2/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 66 degrees warmer now than it was last week at this time and Thursday it's supposed to be even warmer! This weather is crazy. There is very little snow left in my yard so I did not try to measure it.
2/16/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M Misted on me as I ran errands in Winfield yesterday and it felt so warm that I drove with the windows down. Now today there's a heavy fog and water is dripping off the trees.
2/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 60 degrees already! Several places in SW Kansas broke high temperature records yesterday, a week after low records were broken. What's next? A tornado in February?
2/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cooler this morning (48 degrees) but still not heavy coat weather. Noticed green blades of grass poking up yesterday, about a month too early in my opinion.
2/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Doing chores this morning was like walking in pea soup it's so humid.
2/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M MUCH cooler now (27 degrees) than it was the weekend when we were all in short sleeves and barefooted. The maples in our backyard are in full bloom, about a month too early.
2/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Winter is not over! It's 24 degrees here, sunny and cloudless.
2/23/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M I may have gotten more than a trace but when I checked the gauge this morning it was dry. I doubt it evaporated overnight but who knows, it might have. Hearing the sprinkles sure sounded like spring to me!
2/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.21 M M M M It's still sprinkling as I write this. The temp is 47 so for now, it's not going to be icey. Someone south of us got a storm last night judging by all the lightning flashing in the clouds.
2/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M The moisture I reported is a best guess since what's in there is frozen solid. It alternated misting and a light rain most of yesterday so I'm surprised it's not more in the gauge.
2/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M
2/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M The bypass around Ark City was covered with puddles whereas at our house it was just barely wet, like a heavy dew.
2/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was one of those freaky weather days. Drove in and out of rain driving through town; raining hard on the south end and dry on the north. Later, was on the trampoline with the kids, enjoying the warm, humid day when all of a sudden a cold wind blew through and dropped the temp a full 10 degrees. Within 30 minutes it was pouring in my back yard and dry in the front.
3/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M After talking to others from Ark City yesterday it became apparent quickly that our house was an anomoly...on Sunday, we did not get even one nugget of hail while folks in town were pounded.
3/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hung out laundry yesterday it was so nice. I can tell spring is almost upon us because the "testiness-level" of our roosters has escalated to the point you can't turn your back on them.
3/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 50 degrees now, on its way to nearly 70 this afternoon. Since it's supposed to get wet tomorrow, I'll take the warmer temperature today and be glad!
3/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Total cloudcover and cool, 51 degrees. Really pretty day yesterday to be out running errands and tending to chores. Oh yes, saw a pair of starlings this morning so the migrations have begun.
3/5/2011 7:00 PM T M M M M Yesterday a fine mist fell most of the day; today it was bright and sunny but quite cold.
3/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Boring weather weekend but for the western part of the state Tuesday is going to be anything but boring. I don't think our area of the state is supposed to get anything at all.
3/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.67 M M M M It's still sprinkling now as I write this. I can't tell you how wonderful it was early this morning to hear the rain on the roof! I'm hoping the ones in western Kansas get plenty of moisture...my brother-in-law's wheat never came up last fall.
3/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Second day of overcast and gray skies. It drizzled and rained off and on most of yesterday, enough to cancel the first soccer practice of the season.
3/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Light frost early and by now it's mostly melted except in shaded areas; 34 degrees and sunny.
3/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Supposed to be a gorgeous day here...up to 70 degrees. I am lovin' this late winter so far. :)
3/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I need to dig out my thesaurus 'cause I need other words for "bright and sunny". Not complaining though!
3/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M The rain we got yesterday was a total surprise...a wonderful one! It was so funny watching our Polish chickens in the wind with their feathery topknots turned into stringy spikes.
3/15/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M I recorded a trace of moisture because of the fine mist that fell on me as I ran errands yesterday. Today there is a light frost and it's 30 degrees.
3/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's supposed to be in the mid-70's today...hallelujah!
3/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's already warm here (61 degrees) and so humid it feels like it could rain. It's supposed to this weekend.
3/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M WHAT a difference a day makes! It got up to 86 degrees yesterday (pant, pant!) and it's only 56 degrees now. Went from not-a-cloud-in-the-sky to total cloudcover.
3/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 51 degrees right now and gray...yuck! BUT, the trees and bushes are going green with the higher than normal temperatures of the last few days so that's one bright spot.
3/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M According to our thermometer, it got up to 89 degrees yesterday! Felt wonderful, outside scrubbing rabbit cages, but still...much too warm for the first day of spring.
3/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 66 degrees and on its way to the low '80s...another fine day.
3/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 54 degrees and the sun is reflecting off my neighbor's shed...am going to have to shut the blinds.
3/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M We were gone from late Wednesday to Sunday night so I do not know when the little amount I recorded fell. It sleeted on me though Sunday night as I was out doing chores.
3/29/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M It was misty, foggy, and gray...just like this morning is. BUT, it's supposed to get much warmer soon so I will not complain about today.
3/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Where did our 80% chance of rain go? We got absolutely nothing, not even sprinkles!
3/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M For a while this morning the road in front of my house was wet but the sidewalk by the garage was dry. And now it's raining lightly, a wonderful blesssing for the garden and crops.
4/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M It's bright and sunny here...totally different than yesterday when the sun did not come out 'til the afternoon. I'm sure ready for sunshine.
4/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For all the bangin' and blowin' that went on last night, the storm was a big dud here. We sure wish we'd get rain because with these record high temperatures, it's going to get even drier soon.
4/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 47 degrees and barely a cloud in the sky
4/8/2011 9:00 PM 1.22 M M M M Storm began with hail at 6:15 pm, lasting about 4 minutes. Several intmittent periods of heavy rain and lighter rain. Another round of hail at 7:52 pm, lasting less than 1 minute. Storm moved from South to North.
4/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.32 M M M M This is the remainder of the rain that fell Friday night.
4/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 57 degrees and cloudless today. Friday night we had three rounds of hail but only the first one was reported and I don't think any of the hail was more than marble size.
4/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
4/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report...just sunshine and clouds, exactly what's supposed to be in the sky.
4/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 66 degrees, high/thin clouds and storms predicted.
4/15/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M The "trace" of moisture I recorded is just that...barely enough to leave spots on the windshield. A mile south of me in town they got enough to wet the road and to the east and south it was obvious someone was getting a thrashing. Right now it's very windy and 45 degrees. Brrr!
4/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M My goodness...what a LOAD of wind we had yesterday! Brought limbs down all over my yard, including on top of my clothesline which is now missing two strands of wire. Yesterday is historically the 1st day that hummingbirds come back but I dare say any of them that made it here were blown back down south from whence they came.
4/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No moisture of any kind for the weekend. Channel 12 said we are on track to be in the 10 ten driest springs and I believe it!
4/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 64 degrees already so I think this would be a good week to take the flannel sheets off the beds.
4/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing of interest to report
4/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain this morning but I betcha I'll have some to report tomorrow if the weatherman is correct
4/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M It IS a good Friday when we get moisture and it's warm enough for a picnic. All of the little bit I had to report fell as a heavy mist.
4/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M The amount recorded came in two sessions: .05" yesterday afternoon then the rest early this morning. Today's rain came with thunder and lightning and judging by the low overhanging clouds outside now, we might get more soon.
4/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M After I dumped yesterday's amount in the gauge I forgot to put it back up so what I recorded for today's amount is not too acurate. What fell yesterday was a fine to heavy mist, just enough to need to turn the wipers on. Still, thankful it came!
4/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M Began raining in the wee hours of the morning and is still sprinkling lightly as I write this. SO good to get measurable rain!
4/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M The itty-bitty amount of moisture I reported is most likely from condensation or dew. We are finally going to have a warm day.
4/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Already warm (69 degrees) so will be a wonderful day to be outside working in the yard picking up the past winter's windfall limbs.
4/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
5/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's raining lightly as my kids are outside burying a runt kitten so tomorrow I will have measureable rain to report. No moisture earlier today...just cold.
5/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.15 M M M M Yet ANOTHER gray, cool day...45 degrees. Even my children are beginning to complain about this dreary spring weather.
5/3/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M I thought we were going to hammered yesterday because of how dark the clouds were to our west but whatever was there disipated before it got to Cowley County.
5/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Blindingly bright outside but also warm enough to open the windows. Wonderful!
5/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Total cloudcover and cool, 57 degrees
5/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Q. How warm is it this morning? A. "It's SO WARM!" screamed my five-year old. That's good too because it's high time they play outside.
5/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's supposed to be nearly 90 today. Saw the 1st hummingbird of the season yesterday, trying to get a drink out of a red watering can, so ran inside right away to get the sugar water feeder up.
5/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No moisture of any sort to report for the weekend. I mowed part of the yard in a cloud of dust...if we don't get some rain, with these temperatures, we aren't going to have grass to mow.
5/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.24 M M M M I was in Wichita when the rain began here so don't know the exact time but it didn't rain on me on the way home 'til I was between Udall and Winfield.
5/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.63 M M M M I really thought we'd gotten more rain than this but hey, I'll take what we get!
5/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M How do we go from nearly 100 degrees on Monday to now 53 degrees? Total cloudcover and a slight breeze.
5/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I was in Manhattan all weekend for a rabbit show so do not know if it rained while I was gone. But, the gauge was empty so I'm assuming it did not. It sure is a lot cooler than a week ago!
5/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It is just beginning to mist now so by tomorrow I should have something to report. Otherwise it's cool and windy.
5/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.33 M M M M Was rudely awaken in the wee hours of the morning by lightning and thunder; had wind all night.
5/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I was shocked to hear that a big storm has blown up to my east and is heading toward the already devestated town of Joplin. How can it be sunny and mild in one area of the state and raining cats and dogs 50 miles away?
5/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M The weather feels ominous today...
5/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M I'm always amazed at the difference one day can make. Yesterday it was hot and humid and today it's cool, bright and just as calm as can be.
5/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Was gone all weekend and hubby said the gauge was empty so nothing to report there. The rain early this morning came with lightning and thunder.
6/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
6/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not much to report except that we are dry.
6/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 101 degrees yesterday which is MUCH too hot for June 3rd. Even with misters and fans my rabbits were suffering...already. :(
6/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was the 3rd day in a row we had over 100 degrees. Our gauge read 104; the official was a few degrees difference. Either way, our lawn is nearly dead.
6/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Without the normal humidity here, the 104 temp yesterday honestly did not feel that hot. I guess I'll have to dig out my thesaurus 'cause I need another word for "hot".
6/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I really thought we were going to get a shower last night but if fizzled out one county over. Well, at least someone got needed rain.
6/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Ark City was in a "no-rain sandwich" last night, between Wichita's and Ponca City's storms. We got a miniscule amount of rain (.03") but I am most thankful for this break in the 100 degree temps!
6/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Well, as usual, there's nothing to report.
6/12/2011 7:00 AM 1.14 M M M M This amount fell in two separate rounds, both accompanied by thunder and lightning. It is SO good to see rain...maybe I won't have to haul water to fruit trees this week.
6/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We went on a bug hunt in the next county west of us and it is just as dry there as here. The host's yard is dead, the river we waded through is slimy and the fields we have found bugs in in years past were mostly devoid of insect life.
6/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Did you see that is was 107 in Medicine Lodge yesterday? Mercy! Nary a cloud in the sky here and I'm sweating already at 9:22 AM.
6/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What else is there to report except sunny, cloudless skies and hot temperatures knockin' on the door?
6/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Less than 1/4 mile from my house the streets were wet enough to have puddles; my yard was essentially dry. Got caught in a deluge, complete with hail, south of Ponca City, OK.
6/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We could see the storms off to our north yesterday and were hoping the rain would blow south but alas, it did not.
6/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.47 M M M M This is an amended reading as per observer comments of 6/20/11 - CJH
6/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The amount I am reporting was from Saturday and should have been recorded yesterday. I may actually have to mow this week, for only the 3td time this summer. Amend above reading from 0.47 to 0.00; amend 6/19 reading to follow - CJH
6/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.34 M M M M The local ball games were cancelled mid-game last night due to lightning and ominous clouds. Once we got home it wasn't long before the skies did open up; we got several waves of marble-size hail but little else.
6/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We have a few days break in the 100 degree temps before they are predicted to be back in force next week. I'll take it!
6/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 75 degrees already and heading up. Debating on whether to mow since we did get a little rain or wait until it gets up in the 100s and fries the lawn again.
6/24/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M Just enough of a shower to stir up dust and worry the baseball folks
6/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M With the lack of rain, several things in nature are different: the cicadas came out weeks early, there have been no frogs or toads, and not one mosquito. Plenty of ticks though...of course.
6/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The light was a soft orange color yesterday afternoon and at the softball games the sun was cloaked in an orange haze. The result of distant fires maybe?
6/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I thought maybe we'd been blessed by a brief shower last night, due to a puddle out front, but the gauge is dry so it must have been out water softener dumping.
6/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I think from now until whenever this heat wave breaks I'm getting up way early to let the rabbits out to exercise. We were the "coolest" in the state yesterday at 99 degrees. Sure felt hotter than that!
7/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our thermometer got up to 108 yesterday. I know it's terribly hot when I can put ice cubes on the back of my rabbits' necks and they don't move. And judging by the forecast, we aren't getting a break any time soon.
7/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today reminds me of the photo on the CoCoRaHS calendar where the sun is beating down in the gauge (bottom). I wish we could get storm clouds like the top photo!
7/4/2011 7:00 AM M M M M M The amount I recorded was for Saturday and Sunday combined. Saturday's brief shower gave us .04" and a rainbow; Sunday's storm was much heavier and also gave us a rainbow. As thankful as I am for the rain, I like the cooler temperatures even better. Happy 4th everyone! (edit: daily precip initially recorded as 0.19". MDR will be recorded as this report is deleted. P.G.)
7/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M According to the local weatherman today is the last day for a few days at least where we can expect to see triple digits. For that I say HALLELUJAH! Oh yeah, and he predicted rain too.
7/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Stupid rooster! Why do they have to crow before the crack of dawn? I'm up way early but don't have anything to report weather-wise except we were wilting at last night's softball games. Pant-pant.
7/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was water in my gauge this morning but the ground is totally dry so I'm guessing what was in there was left from the last little rain. Although, by looking at the national map, Kansas did get quite a bit of rain. Who knows? I'm reporting as 0.00.
7/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I was gone all weekend but am pretty sure nothing fell from the sky except heat and sunshine. It was 113 degrees when I got back yesterday, too hot for man or beast!
7/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Rain? What's that?! If my rain gauge were an animal or plant it would have been dead long time ago!
7/13/2011 7:00 AM 2.78 M M M M Rain = Really Awesome and Incredibly Needed! Started last night with a .04 sprinkle, then another wave came about 7 PM and has been raining ever since. We needed this rain so badly; our burning bushes are already turning red and they shouldn't be until October.
7/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.67 M M M M This amount is for 7-10 AM, which brings our rainfall total up to 3.45". Just north of me Strother Field got nearly 6" and other parts of the city were flooding. We are thankful for any precipitation at this point!
7/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I did not report all weekend but honestly, there was nothing to report except this relentless heat. Heat, heat, go away, come again another day!
7/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Officially we did not get above 100 degrees yesterday but it sure felt like it! 2011 may surpass the record highs of 1980 if it stays in the 100s through August; we are still a ways from the dust-bowl year of 1936 though. Small consolation!
7/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This extreme heat turned deadly on Saturday when one of my neighbors died while out riding his bicycle.
7/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I'm all out of ideas on what else to say except, "No rain, all sun."
7/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Glad to see that someone in Kansas got rain! Sure wish it would rain on SW Kansas where my brother-in-law has now sold his second round of cows due to no pasture.
7/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I laughed out loud this morning watching the people in NYC complaining about their "heat wave" of like two or three days. Honey, come to Kansas where we are nearing a month of 100+ days! Quit your whinin'!
7/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Oh, happy day! A little rain last night has brought the temperature down, at least for a while. Then it's back to the over.
7/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The only moisture in our yard yesterday was from the misters I set up for my rabbits. At 110 degrees, it's a miracle they did not all die!
7/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Was working the 4-H food booth when a little storm blew in and we were so excited that we opened all the doors so a cool, fresh breeze could blow through! And it brought the temperature down by almost 20 degrees.
7/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing in my rain gauge but heat and sunshine. Thermometer's been stuck at 107 for hours. :(
8/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Got back from vacation last night to a green yard and 3.15" in the gauge. And lo and behold, the temperature was nearly 30 degrees cooler than when we left on the 2nd. I'll take it!
8/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nice, nice day yesterday...didn't even turn on the air conditioner 'til time to go to bed.
8/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Ark City had a dust storm about 6 PM, first one I have seen in probably 10 years. Thought we were going to get a storm later but it must have fallen apart before it got to Cowley County. Heavy dew this morning.
8/18/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M I'm recording a trace of rain since while at a picnic in town last night we were sprinkled on for a few minutes. This morning there's heavy dew and new mushrooms popping up everywhere.
8/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M If we have three more 100 degree days we will equal the record set in 1980. Today will definitely be over 100 so we might just get close. It's already warm here and what rain we got last week is gone so must start watering again. Entered a drought report for our own little ranchero yesterday.
8/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not much to report here except sunlight and more sunlight.
8/21/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M Brought my rabbits in out of their exercise pens yesterday because it started sprinkling but I might as well have left them out there becuase the few raindrops that fell never made it through the tree canopy.
8/22/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M I'm writing down "trace" for yesterday's rain 'cause it sprinkled on us talking outside church. It is raining here right now so I will have more to record tomorrow. How sweet to hear rain!
8/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M This is the amount we got after 7 AM yesterday...the rain started like 10 minutes after the hour and was so refreshing.
8/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The weather event for today is that at the end of the first day of school it should be 100+ degrees. I think this is a first, certainly for my own children.
8/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 2011 will go down in the record books for the 2nd hottest year, after 1936. But, we're not too far from that year either...I think it's like four more days and we'll reach that record too. Lord, I hope not!
8/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What a difference in temperatures! This morning was down right cool, 75 degrees. Well, that feels cool me to at least, compared to over 100!
8/28/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M I'm entering a trace of rain since we had a sprinkle yesterday (so my kids say...) and there were puddles on the road driving to church this morning. Have enjoyed reading reports from NC, NJ and NY and all their hurricane experiences. Sure wish Kansas would get rain!
8/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful morning evolving into a day in the mid-90s. Guess I better enjoy it since the next two days are going to be knocking on the door of the record year 1936, 50 days in a row (Wichita) of 100 degrees or higher. Can't put the misters away yet.
8/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M I could hear rain dripping off the eaves but the sidewalk was dry so I thought maybe I was imagining things. We got a tiny bit of rain, enough to make my feet wet, walking from the back porch to the gauge.
8/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today the Wichita area will tie 1936's record high temperature record and since it's supposed to be well over 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday (drum roll...), 2011 will officially be the hottest summer on record.
9/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our thermometer read 110 at its highest yesterday but I didn't need it to tell me it was hot. After this many blistering days, my body tells me when it's over 105, and the rabbits sure do! The only area in our backyard that has green grass is right around the hose that is attached to the rabbits' misters.
9/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 84 degrees now, not bad, but I already know that today's going to be another fans and misters day. I finally got to the "I've had it" point yesterday with the heat.
9/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M When we left for vacation 8/02 it was 103 degrees. Woke up on 8/05 (western Pawnee county) and it was a bone chilling 42 degrees! Now, I like cooler weather as well as the next guy but a 60 degree drop is a bit extreme. Western KS's pastures look like bare dirt so they really do need rain.
9/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The kids are convinced it's nearly winter and have been begging me to get out their coats. Well, it is a shock to go from 100s to the low 50s in less than a week.
9/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Glad to see western Kansas got even a bit of rain...they need it so badly. Noticed yesterday that many of our area's trees are turning yellow and dropping leaves; this is way too early and an effect of our hot, dry summer then the sudden flip of temperatures.
9/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Learned a new weather word last night: MOTS = More Of The Same. That's what we have today...more of the same.
9/10/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M Was at SquallMart last night when the blessed scent of rain wafted through. Outside though the only evidence there'd been anything from the sky was a few droplets on the windows. Sprinkled again for maybe 30 seconds once we got home. Noticed that our sycamore trees have leaves half the size of normal.
9/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The poor trees in our area have all but given up...I think at least 1/3 of the leaves on our sycamores are on the ground. The soil is so dry that large chunks of concrete are appearing in our yard where before it was lush grass, and our dining room wall has a 4' long crack along the ceiling because the foundation is shifting.
9/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Muggy and sunny, going to be a pretty day
9/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M To see and hear the sweet, sweet sound of rain outside my window this morning I didn't even care that there was a full load of laundry on the clothesline!
9/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M It was spitting as I walked out to check the rain gauge; chilly too...first day the kids have gone to school in long pants.
9/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M We recieved sprinkles off and on most of yesterday so .01" may be a bit too much. But what was in the gauge was more than a trace. Great to see that the whole state got rain. We sure need it!
9/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Woke up this morning to cracks of thunder and "Nyet, nyet, nyet" from my normally English-speaking children. I think it's warmer now than when I was at a miserably damp and cool birthday party last night. Still raining at observation time.
9/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.57 M M M M It rained on and off most of yesterday then the sun broke through late in the afternoon. I think we've gotten about an inch the last two days which ought to green up the grass for one last hoorah before autumn's cold kills it once and for all.
9/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M I think the tiny amount I recorded is from the very heavy dew. I left a bright green trail through the grayish grass as I scampered to the rain gauge. Chilly too.
9/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The fall migration is just beginning here. I've been seeing monarchs for weeks but then yesterday there was a huge flock of grackles stalking through the yard. The hummingbirds have about a week 'til they fly to Central America so are tanking up at the feeders.
9/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Barely got a sprinkle yesterday but it was enough to send the roofers packing.
9/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.17 M M M M This is a combination of what fell yesterday morning as a mist and drizzle, and what came in the wee hours of this morning.
9/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Interesting...all around me people got measureable rain yesterday and we got nothing at all. Talked with a farmer yesterday who said he only got one cutting off of his alfalfa this summer. Winter is going to be hard on livestock I'm afraid.

Start Date End Date & Time Duration in Days Precipitation Snow Depth Snow Depth SWE Notes
7/3/2011 7/04/2011 7:00 AM 2 0.19 M M Sunday's storm was much heavier and also gave us a rainbow. As thankful as I am for the rain, I like the cooler temperatures even better. Happy 4th everyone!
7/26/2011 7/27/2011 12:00 AM 2 0.00 M M Seems weird reporting "O" as a multi-day report. We were at the county fairgrounds very early yesterday to set up rabbit and poultry displays so did not get to read the gauge on time.
8/3/2011 8/14/2011 7:00 PM 12 3.15 M M The temperatures while we were gone was way up into the 100s and so I have no idea how much moisture evaporated. The larger tube was coated entirely with condensation so my guess it the water tried to get out and couldn't.
9/3/2011 9/05/2011 7:30 PM 3 0.25 M M We were gone for Labor Day weekend so do not know exactly when this amount fell or how much evaporated.
9/24/2011 10/01/2011 7:00 PM 8 0.00 M M
