11/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.07 M M M M We have had snow flurries twice now, with scant accumulation on the leaves that are still on the ground, which melts rapidly. the lakes of any size are still completely open, but small ponds have thin skims of ice, which may go with the 50+ F degree temps that are forecast for the next few days. The ground is not stiff yet, except in deep shade with wet soils. I left the last accumulation of snowmelt in the gauge to see if it would remain frozen, since no precip was forecast (and none fell) and it did remain frozen. I removed the gauge and funnel on November 1, which was a good idea as it turned out. We built a new woodshed on the site of where I did snow depth measurements last winter, so this year I will not have a very good snow measurement area, since our lots are so close to the lake (and we are on the windy shore) and they are so heavily wooded. But I will do my best to get as accurate snowfall and snowpack totals as I can. Last year I also did snowpack totals under deep coniferous cover, to give some notion of how much snow can be diverted from the ground by wind eddying around deep coniferous cover, and also by coniferous tree branches and trunks accumulating snow and frozen snowmelt. hope you found this data interesting, annecdotal and totally unscientific as it is.

At one time yesterday morning, I measured 3 inches of snow on the ground, but with rising temperatures and rain, much of the snow has melted, and depths on the ground range from 1 to 2.5 inches. At present, about 75% of the ground has snow cover, and this is rapidly diminishing. A light snow is falling.

I measured .5" under conifer cover, and from 1.5 to 2 inches in the open. I believe that one of the more difficult to quantify reasons for this is the temperature variation between different surfaces at this time. the deeper depth was measured on my snow measuring board, which has cold air flowing beneathe it, and the 1.5 inch depth was measured on open ground. There was a certain amount of snow melt on thte ground, which is still comparatively warm. The lake is beginning to ice, it is about 30 feet from shore, but we are expecting a warming trend, and rain, so this may melt.

Now, temps are falling. I remembered to keep drying off the doors on the big Ford, but of course, the neglected patio slider is frozen shut. The tropical-like storm that the continental US experienced in October broke many large trees up here in the dense forest. with lowering temps the men are able to get out and finish gleaning the wood-- two huge downed trees will yield us enough wood for almost two winters. High winds frequently have a "cleaning effect" on big old trees that are beginning to lose vitality-- their loss makes way for new growth, and keeps many of us up here warm on our 30 degrees below zero nights...

It is very difficult to get accurate snow depths and water contents under these conditions. Frequently, the percolating snowmelt and rain water have worn a cavity where the snow rests on the ground, so that there is a void at the bottom of the measurement. my total snow measurement water was dirty--water on the surface can create a thin slurry layer that gets taken up in the cylinder.

I deliberately took snow on the ground core measurements from two areas, both in the open (not under tree cover) that illustrate the inconsistency of this data type at this time of the year. Yesterday's measurement was 0.09 inches, today's measurement was 0.44 inches. Due to vagaries of melting during last week's warm weather, and rain fall patterns, the first area became bare of snow last week, and the second area did not. Averageing these two measurements would be a worthless piece of data. Instead, I take many, many snow depth measurements, and record the measurement that is by far the most common. I know by my experience last year that this disparity disappears as the winter progresses.

It is snowing on and off very lightly today, but the storm has passed us by and the sky is lightly overcast, and we are supposed to have sunny skies behind the last of the storm event. Some major state and US roads in North/Central Wisconsin are listed as "impassable" on NOAA weather radio as of 8 AM December 12, but here just across the stateline the plow has already been past our house on the back of a remote lake, so the roads in Watersmeet township are obviously lightly snowcovered. The heaviest snowfalls are clearly quite a ways to the south, and possibly the north, west and east of us. I have been involved with Cocorahs for a year and a half now, and it often seems we are in a rain and snow anomaly-- everybody around us gets more, or we get the most and everybody around us gets much less. interesting. I have no idea why this is, but one thought is our geographic position relative to the uplands to the north and west in the UP, and another is our position relative to the Lake Superior snowbelt and the Lake Michigan Coast/Green Bay.

Areas near the house, where the snow was barely dimpled around the tree trunks on Monday, are now completely bare of snow. I took the total snow and ice measurement very close to where I took Monday's sample. today's sample was very granular with many crystals of clear ice. Since Monday's SWE measurement, I have lost .48 inches of water equivilent at this location, and 5 inches of snow depth. I took a lot of snow depth measurements, and they ranged between 6.5 (all too common) and 11 inches (where the snow had been wind driven into drifts). Some of the snowmelt, obviously, percolated deeper into the snowpack, and I did observe runoff downslope towards the lake. but with two days of brilliant sunshine and extraordinarily warm temps (the thermometer on the deck, which is in a sheltered location out of the sun, registered 56 degrees yesterday afternoon), we had to lose snowpack to evaporation. very sad. our groundwater and our lake are just like CocoRAHS-- every drop counts.

Is there any programs out there calculating snow storage on the coniferous forests of the Rockies? Snow melts or is blown rapidly out of the conifers here, and at any rate, never gets very deep. It seems to me, with the fir species, for example, individual branches, as a aggregate on each tree, would hold more than an individual tree would be calculated to hold, using basal area as the only indicator.

A wintry mix developed in midafternoon, and lasted through the afternoon and into the evening. I did not take a new snow measurement because the rain had caused the snow to melt quite a bit. It would have been a useless measurement. Most of the west and south facing banks of the lakes up here were bare before the latest snowfall. Snow has melted off these areas two or three times already this late winter. snow depths, as I have written before, are extremely variable. All the precipitation caught in the gauge was as clear frozen water.
3/22/2011 8:00 AM T 0.1 M 8.0 3.43 a trace of icy snow fell in the overnight hours. The area around my house is at the top of a precipitous southwest facing lake bank. I have realized that my remaining snow totals, 0-3 inches, are not truly representative of the local area. I walked far into the woods today, to the northwest of my house, and took many measurements and a core sample. The snow depths vary from 5 to 11 inches. Our local topography is undulating glacially derived landforms, and hummocky from previous logging activity. We have lost duff around here due to the earthworm invasion, so mineral soil is commonly at the surface of the soil. On high points in the forest, the snow depths are the same as exist around my house-- 0 to 3 inches in depth. snow depths, in other words, are extremely variable.

I walked forward into the woods(a well-stocked hardwood sawtimber stand) across the road for aobut 300 feet on a transect, taking many snow depth readings, and the average depth in the forest where I was is 6.5 inches, with a SWE of 2.43 inches. At this time there are a few areas deeper than this, mainly in remnant drifts around logs and hummocks (this is hummocky glacial terrain). Frequently, even deeper in the woods, areas on knolls and in the prism of woods roads are bare of snow-- it is at least much shallower than 6.5 inches. Overall, the snow is composed of large ice crystals, and has an ice layer next to the soil surface that is extremely difficult to dislodge. the surface of snow that remains in open areas around my house has has sun-weathered into sharp peaks, and must be less dense, given the SWE values of the two samples I collected.

The .07 inches difference between the gauge catch and the melted core amount must represent the rain that fell sporadically yesterday afternoon. The inside of the gauge was covered with frozen rain. Most of the areas around my house, where I usually obtain samples, are bare of snow or have a thin covering of slush. I am the only person doing this for miles and miles around, so a reading right at my house, on a lakeshore, is not worth much to anybody wondering about snowpack. It shows that roadside cutbanks in the sun and lakeshores are bare but they have been bare for a couple of months already. So at this time of year I walk out into the woods for 200 feet on a transect and take depth readings and a SWE sample. Today, depths ranged from 1-3 inches on northfacing or sunny areas to 6 inches on north facing slopes. Bowl shaped depressions are holding rain and meltwater. It is wonderful outside this morning-- snow and slush raining down from the trees. we need all the moisture we can get, even though just to the south of us they have had a lot of precip this winter. Most of the snow of earlier in the week had melted by the time snow began falling late last evening.

A little more snow fell over night, bringing the 24 hour total to 0.69 inches. the snow is melting away fast. it did not cover the ground uniformly-- most of the snow that fell yesterday melted on contact with the ground.

9/13/2011 8:00 AM T M M M M As we rode our bicycles last night about 6 PM, we were pelted with a few stray raindrops, but that was the extent of the rain. The news was the stong gusty winds that blew smoke from the wildland fires in the Arrowhead Region of MN into our area. Around 8:30 PM, the smell of forest fire smoke (Nick has fought many forest fires-- he knows the smell of a burning forest) came into the house stronger and stronger-- I had to shut the doors against its intensity after awhile. We called the Tribal Police in Watersmeet about 9 PM to see if a fire had been reported, and were told that this smoke was from Minnesota.
