10/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What a cold morning today. 37 degrees and bright sunshine. The coldest so far this season. Happy New Water Year!
10/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.30 M M M M Light to moderate rain showers last night brought us 0.30 inches of new rain for October. 44 degrees and an overcast sky, make for a fairly cool morning.
10/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The coldest morning of the season so far. 33 degrees and a low sun hanging around on the horizon. A heavy frost this morning. More cold weather expected tonight, with temperatures going down into the upper 20s.
10/4/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The first frost of the season is here. 29 degrees and a thick frost covering the ground and the rain gauge. I'm glad I took in the inner tube and funnel last night. The end of the growing season is coming to a close with this frost.
10/5/2010 10:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 30 degrees was the low temperature this morning, and I am sure there was some kind of frost out there. Bright and sunny and 48 degrees at 10:30.
10/6/2010 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A broken contrail streaking through the sky this morning, with some cirrus clouds as well. 40 degrees and another sunny day expected. No rain for the rest of this week into the weekend. Well above average temperatures starting tomorrow.
10/8/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 43 degrees and a little bit of fog outside. A Red Flag warning has just been posted. We need rain, and these warm temperatures will not help that cause.
10/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 45 degrees and some light fog outside this morning. The sun is just peeking through the stratus clouds along the horizon. NWS Open House today in Grand Rapids. High yesterday of 78 degrees. Very warm!
10/10/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 49 degrees and sunny. A chance of thunderstorms today and temperatures in the 70s once again. This warm spell is not going to last for long. Back in the 60s starting tomorrow.
10/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A wonderful sky this morning. Most of the cloud cover is toward the rising sun and consists of stratus and cirrus clouds, with some cumulus mixed in. A nice orange color as well. 45 degrees is the temperature. A much cool day today with the chance of some showers.
10/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 43 degrees and a very thick overcast stratus cloud layer out there this morning. Only 0.30 inches of rain this month so far. Very dry.
10/13/2010 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M 50 degrees and light rain falling at 8AM. Some thunder out there as well. The sounding for Big Rapids shows quite a bit of precipitation in the atmosphere. Especially around the 3000 ft range. The rain has finally come!
10/14/2010 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M A nippy 33 degrees this morning and some frost on the ground. Not a hard frost, but a fairly good one. Clear skies today and about 60 degrees for a high. The tenth of an inch of rain in the gauge this morning, came from some heavy rain showers yesterday morning, which ended right around the noon time hour. 0.50 inches of rain for the month. Still below average, but we're catching up.
10/15/2010 9:10 AM 0.02 M M M M A little bit of rain in the gauge this morning, but nothing to get excited about. We are still below normal for the month, but hopefully we will receive more rain in the coming weeks.
10/16/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The second hard frost of the season. A thin layer of ice around the gauge and 30 degrees. Bright sunshine once again this morning. A cooler day today then yesterday, with temperatures just below 60 degrees.
10/17/2010 9:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 52 degrees and bright sunshine. A little bit of dew on the gauge.
10/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The first overcast morning in a long time. 41 degrees.
10/19/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another hard frost this morning. A low of 29 degrees here on the east side of Big Rapids. No real rain in the forecast for the rest of the week. A chance of rain Wednesday night, but I doubt it will amount to much. This Fall appears to be drier then normal, unlike past years.
10/20/2010 11:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/21/2010 8:00 AM 0.19 M M M M WOW! What a frost. Everything is frozen. The rain from last night is still frozen in the gauge, but slowly melting, and the outer tube is frozen to the back fence. For some reason this is a harder frost then when we got down to 29 degrees the other day. We only had a low of 31 degrees here. So something is different this morning for sure. A little bit of rain fell during the evening yesterday, right around dinner time. We'll take it!
10/22/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M 30 degrees and heavy frost this morning. We have a beautiful pink Stratocumulus sky. 0.03 inches of rain in the gauge from some lake effect showers, that almost looked like snow falling at times yesterday.
10/23/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another nice sunrise this morning. No rain and stratus layers mixed with altocumulus clouds fill this sky. A big batch of rain in Illinois is headed our way. 42 degrees.
10/24/2010 8:15 AM 0.63 M M M M Lots of rain in the gauge this morning and about 55 degrees. Light drizzle falling. Scattered rain showers on the radar, with a larger area of rain around the Chicago area.
10/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.31 M M M M 57 degrees and not as much rain in the gauge as I thought we would receive. Lots of moisture was moving up from the gulf coast area yesterday. Some really bad storms accompanied the long lines of rain. Most of the rain went sliding right by us, toward the Mt. Pleasant area. Severe weather is possible tomorrow.
10/26/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very mild this morning and the wind has already picked up!
10/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.39 M M M M 53 degrees this morning and a 12MPH wind blowing from the SW. Mainly blue skies with a long line of stratocumulus clouds heading north at a fast pace. Light to heavy rain showers yesterday but no lightning or thunder seen during the event. A very interesting observation. Since the storms have passed, winds have really picked up. After the main batch of storms passed through, we had a few isolated rain showers that produced some moderate rainfall. A peak wind of 34 MPH last night around 9:30 PM.
10/28/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M 46 degrees, overcast, and 0.01 inches of rain in the gauge from some light rain showers last night. No wind this morning. A peek wind of 39 MPH here in Big Rapids yesterday. Very blustery yesterday with wind gusts up to 60 MPH at times.
10/29/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Isolated light rain showers yesterday gave us 0.01 inches of rain over the last 24 hrs. 38 degrees this morning and sunny!
10/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear and 39 degrees. A possible rain/snow mix in the forecast for next week. Winter is coming.
10/31/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 34 degrees and a heavy frost this morning. A low of 28 on this Halloween morning. Happy Halloween everyone!
11/1/2010 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 23 degrees this morning and the sun is just over the horizon now. Another hard frost!
11/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 24 degrees with altocumulus clouds.
11/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 31 degrees. Another chilly morning in West Michigan. Still a chance of rain/snow tomorrow and Friday.
11/4/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Light rain showers yesterday morning gave us 0.03 inches of new rain. The first accumulation of rain for November. Looking at the radar at 11:15 this morning, I see a long line of showers heading directly south right along lake Michigan. A very interesting weather pattern. Mostly cloudy at 8AM and 31 degrees. Not a very cold night last night. Only a low of 31 degrees. A snow/rain mix is still in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. We'll see if the white stuff falls!
11/5/2010 11:00 AM T M M M M Light snow flurries earlier this morning falling. Some pellets on the car but not on the ground. There was a trace of rain in the inner tube when I brought it inside last night, but now that precipitation has melted. I am still entering a trace of precipitation over the last 24 hrs. First snow of the season!
11/6/2010 8:00 AM T T 0.00 0.0 0.00 A light sleet fell mainly yesterday afternoon. Some actual snow was mixed in, but mainly it was just ice pellets falling. The coldest morning of the season so far. It's 21 degrees outside right now. Frozen ice pellets on the snow boards this morning. I'm going to call it a Trace of new snow, just to be on the safe side. Most of the snow that fell yesterday melted on impact.

11/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The first overcast and foggy morning in a long time. Hopefully we will get some more sunshine today, and the fog will clear soon. 38 degrees out there.
11/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M More fog this morning and 37 degrees. A light dew on the ground and the gauge. The sun should make its first appearance of the day in a couple of hours. Where's the rain?! Only 0.03 inches for the month so far.
11/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Clear skies and a faint sun shining this morning. The fog is slowly breaking with a temperature of 38 degrees at 8AM. Yet another clear and sunny day in West Michigan. A rain/snow mix is in the extended forecast. Pretty soon snow will be here. We'll see if we have some snow fall and accumulate on the ground before Thanksgiving. I offer a salute this morning to all those who have served America and those who are serving now. God bless this country and those who lay down their lives to keep us free.
11/12/2010 8:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A mild 50 degrees with a trace of rain in the gauge. We had some light rain showers come through during the early nighttime hours yesterday. Overcast this morning. A rainy start to the weekend and next week coming up.
11/13/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 The winds have picked up this morning. A west wind blowing between 10 and 15 MPH. A chance of rain today and throughout the weekend. Looks like next week will bring us a rain/snow mix. 42 degrees at 8AM. We have been above freezing the last couple of nights. 0.01 inches of rain from an unusual downpour around the late morning hours yesterday. Summer was back for only a minute or two during that period. Big puffy cumulus clouds yesterday really brought back memories of those summer days we had this year. Only stratocumulus clouds though. Some did appear to look very similar to cumulonimbus, but temperatures were much too cold for any thunderstorm development. I looked at the weather sounding for Big Rapids and noticed some warmer air aloft. The warm air up high could have caused the development of these summer-like clouds.
11/14/2010 8:50 AM 0.09 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 40 degrees with light drizzle falling this morning.
11/15/2010 8:25 AM 0.07 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 34 degrees and a little bit of sunshine this morning. On and off light to heavy rain showers last night. No snow on the ground this morning. I don't think it got cold enough to snow last night anyway. A chance of snow later in the week.
11/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 32 degrees right on the nosy this morning and a big bright sun shining. A little bit of fog hanging around as well. Ice is covering the cars and the rain gauge. Some frozen water in the bottom of the gauge. Fairly heavy rain showers last night after midnight, ending around 3AM. A rain/snow mix possible Wednesday night thru Thursday night.
11/17/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 All zeros this morning and 39 degrees.
11/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 An above freezing temperature reading of 35 degrees this morning. Overcast skies at 8AM, with a chance of some flurries later this morning. The 0.03 inches of rain, came from some fairly heavy and isolated rain showers that swept the area yesterday. Just waiting for the big snow!

11/20/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 No rain or snow. Only 0.26 inches for the month. Well below average.
11/21/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 33 degrees with overcast skies this morning. A east wind blowing this morning at about 11 MPH.
11/22/2010 8:30 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A mild 56 degrees outside with a little bit of new rainfall to report. We are having our usually gray and overcast November day today. The rain yesterday consisted of light drizzle and mist, with some heavier showers later last night.
11/23/2010 8:00 AM 0.44 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 32 degrees with a wonderful sunrise this morning. Orange colored clouds toward the rising sun, with blue overcast clouds elsewhere. Quite windy this morning as well. The wind chill readings are below zero. Here is the rainfall summary for yesterday. The rain started around 11:22AM until 12:15PM dropping 0.09 inches of rain. During this one hour rain event, there was light to moderate rain showers mixed with some heavy rain. A break in the rain occurred soon after 12:15PM, and ran until the early evening hours. We had a tornado watch issued right around that time, but no tornadoes here. Some gusty winds late last night with a few lightning flashes. A very heavy shower around 10PM last night wrapped up the rain event.
11/24/2010 8:45 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 We have had snow falling over the last 24 hrs but nothing in the gauge or on the ground this morning. Flakes did fall and accumulate in the gauge yesterday (about a Trace of snow), but have melted since then. Looks like we might get a little bit of snow accumulation by Thanksgiving tomorrow. A chilly 24 degrees at 8:45.
11/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.17 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 36 degrees with light mist falling on this gloomy Thanksgiving morning. The ice and snow accumulation they were calling for, has melted due to the warm temperatures and the mist. Some ice did accumulate on the snow boards last night though, but not in the gauge. I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving!
11/26/2010 8:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 T 0.00 A few flakes in the gauge this morning and falling. The snow has been falling fairly hard but not too bad. Some flakes on the ground and a wicked 23 degrees with wind chills in the single digits. A light dusting of snow on one of the three snow boards, but not enough to put in a trace report. An inch or less of snow is in the forecast today. NOTE: I melted the frozen rain in the gauge last night, and found out that my gauge had gone down 2 grams (472 grams to 470 grams) in weight. I think it's either the plastic wearing off or the cold weather doing tricks on me!
11/27/2010 8:15 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A few snow flakes in the gauge this morning and 27 degrees. The snow accumulation they were calling for never happened. In fact, we have no snow on the ground here in Big Rapids. Just frozen puddles.
11/28/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 23 degrees and clear skies for a change!
11/29/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 30 degrees at 8AM. Bright yellow stratus clouds.
11/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.73 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A misty morning with a steady rain falling. Light to moderate rain has been falling since 11:20 PM last night. We have quite a bit of rain in the gauge. 0.73 inches. That's a TON, compared to the 24 hour totals we have had this month. Temperatures this morning are very mild. We have 47 degrees at 8 AM. The ground is very saturated.
12/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.23 0.3 M 0.5 0.04 We have our first BIG snowfall of the season! Well, maybe not that BIG! 28 degrees at 8AM. I had a hard time measuring all the snow, since it has been a while, but we managed. More snow on the ground then I thought we would get, but the three snowboards I'm using worked very well for averaging. 0.07 inches of snow and 0.16 inches of rain, hence the total precip. of 0.23 inches. The rain ended yesterday around 10:35 AM. Snow started late last night. Steady snow falling since observation time.
12/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.08 0.9 0.09 1.5 0.10 A nice coating of fluffy new snow on the ground this morning. 25 degrees and light flurries falling. I tried to go cross-country skiing last night, but there is not quite enough snow on the ground for it. I did a couple of laps though. It's nice to see the snow again!
12/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 0.2 0.02 1.5 0.08 Overcast this morning with some flurries falling every once and a while. 25 degrees again this morning, much like yesterday. Light snow most of yesterday with snow late last night as well. A snow band developed last night just north of Big Rapids, giving us an additional dusting. In the extended forecast, it appears that we will stay right around 30 degrees or so for highs. The overcast skies have set in as usual this time of year. More chances of snow starting Saturday night and continuing into next week. A break in the action today and tomorrow, with only a chance of flurries. Winter is here and right on time! NOTE: My snow core from the snow board, oddly enough, matches up with the total precipitation for today.
12/4/2010 8:00 AM T T T 1.0 0.06 A light dusting of snow on the snow boards, from some brief snow showers yesterday. We have lost a little bit of snow and can see bare ground in some spots. 26 degrees.
12/5/2010 8:00 AM T T T 0.5 0.07 A very chilly morning today, with the temperature around 25 degrees once again. Mainly clear skies with a large stratus layer toward the eastern horizon. Another Trace report today. A snow advisory is in effect for the lake shore counties. The lake enhanced snow bands should give us very little in accumulation.
12/6/2010 9:50 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.5 0.05 Pardon the late observation time this morning. It really doesn't matter though, because the snow is not accumulating on the ground. The gauge had snow in it though, which I thought was really weird. This means that the air is much colder then the ground. Only one of the new snow measuring areas had snow on it, from considerable blowing and drifting, due to the fairly breezy NW winds. 23 degrees, with the sun popping out every once and a while.
12/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 T 0.5 0.05 A very nippy temperature of 18 degrees this morning and some blustery winds once again. Some blowing and drifting snow out there. We don't have that much snow on the ground to blow around, so it's not too bad. Only a tenth of an inch of new snowfall. We seem to be dodging the heavy snow so far this Winter here in Big Rapids.
12/8/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 0.3 0.01 1.0 0.05 21 degrees with light flurries falling at 8AM. A little bit more snow on the ground now, with an additional 0.3 inches of snow over the last 24 hours. The snow did not accumulate that much on the boards during the daytime but more during the late night hours. A chance of snow every day, with a possibly big snow Saturday night into Sunday.
12/9/2010 8:00 AM T T T 1.0 0.09 What a cold temperature this morning. 11 degrees at 8AM, with a low of 9 degrees around 4AM. We are getting cooler temperatures than normal these days, that's for sure. Our average high for December so far, is only 29F with an average low of around 20F or so. The ground outside is completely frozen. I was going to place a marker near the back snowboard, but it is virtually impossible to do so, with the surface being so hard. I don't remember the ground being so frozen this early in the winter. Another beautiful sunrise this morning, with pink and yellow stratus waves hovering about. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Total Snow Core on the ground went up 0.04 inches for some reason. Could be the colder temperatures last night that caused this change. We have had snow accumulation every day this December, and have not been above the freezing mark for highs. November 30th was the last time we got above freezing.
12/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.06 0.6 0.07 1.5 0.17 The number one thing that all Michiganders despise is freezing rain, and guess what? We have freezing rain this morning, just below a dusting of sticky and wet snow. The temperature is 27 degrees. It's close to the freezing mark, so I am not surprised we're getting a little wintry mix out there this morning. Not as much snow as they were calling for. We didn't even get an inch here in Big Rapids.
12/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 1.5 0.16 No snow or any other form of precipitation this morning, for the first time since November 29th. A mild 30 degrees this morning. For the first time this month we had a high temperature just above the freezing mark (33F) yesterday. We have fog outside this morning, much like yesterday afternoon. Very gloomy. This will all change soon though. A big winter storm is coming our way. It should hit tonight with totals by Monday of almost a foot or over a foot of new snow in some locations. With this storm should come much cooler temperatures.
12/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.65 3.3 0.71 5.0 0.78 Very wet snow and lots of it this morning. The temperature is right around the freezing mark. I'm not doing my 3 station average due to the fluctuations in snowfall. We received about 3 inches of new snow though, which is the most I have ever recorded here using the snowboard method. The snow looks pretty, but I am sure the roads out of town are a mess.
12/13/2010 8:00 AM 0.04 0.7 0.07 5.0 0.81 11 degrees with a brutal north wind blowing, dropping temperatures down into the single digits or below zero. Blowing and drifting snow out there over the last 24 hours. We did not have that much snow fall, but small drifts are scattered all over the place, adding a couple of inches to the 5 inch total snow depth reading this morning. There is a thin layer of snow on top of a hard and frozen layer. This snow is pretty good for Cross-Country Skiing though, to my surprise. 2 day storm total: 4 inches. Not as much as they were calling for. I thought we would get more light and fluffy snow, then the wet stuff.
12/14/2010 8:00 AM T T T 5.0 0.74 We have trace reports to submit this morning, possibly from blowing/drifting snow. A brief snow shower yesterday, but otherwise a day filled with cloudy and partly sunny skies. The temperatures yesterday only hit about 15 degrees or so. 14 degrees at 8AM. My anemometer cups of my wind gauge are still frozen. A warm-up is expected today, so maybe that will melt them. What I mean by a warm up, is temperatures might hit 20 degrees or higher.
12/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.01 0.2 T 5.0 0.81 When I weighed the snow in the gauge, my scale had some fits. It couldn't decide whether it weighed 471 grams or 472 grams. The amount of snow in the gauge to me appeared to be right about at 0.01 inches. I wouldn't call it a trace. Anyway, 19 degrees and we just received about 0.2 inches of new snow. No snow was in the forecast last night, but we had the lake effect NW flow going on. The snow was very pretty to watch, almost like it was falling in slow-motion. Much like yesterday, we have overcast skies. I also saw a pink sun pillar piercing through the sky around the observation time. It is very unusual to see one of those!
12/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 4.5 0.74 The coldest morning so far this winter. -2 degrees at 8AM. Very cold! We are right now one of the coldest in the state. A cold patch must be hanging over this area. The chance of more lake effect snow picks up today and into the the weekend.
12/17/2010 8:00 AM T T T 4.5 0.80 A mild 24 degrees this morning with light flurries falling. A trace of new snow as expected! Are total snow depth is gradually diminishing as we count down the days to Christmas.
12/18/2010 8:00 AM T T T 4.5 0.79 20 degrees with a 9MPH wind blowing from the WSW. My anemometer cups have unfroze and are back working again after about 6 days AWOL. We have more trace reports this morning. There were light snow showers yesterday evening which gave us these scant reports. The snow board in the front had much more snow on it when I check last night. With this light wind blowing the finest snow can easily blow around. WEATHER SUMMARY SO FAR FOR DECEMBER (from my weather station here at the house and CoCoRaHS reports). Average high temp: 28.2F (below average but not unusual). Average low temp: 17.1F (right around average). Average high humidity: 78%. Average low humidity: 54%. My wind data has been slightly off due to the anemometer cups freezing (had to get readings from the airport). Precip: 1.11 inches. Snowfall: 6.60 inches (we need more to match January of this year).
12/19/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 0.6 0.03 5.5 0.81 22 degrees with a little bit of new snow. We had heavy snow showers yesterday morning after 9AM, with lighter snow later in the day ending by late last night. I will be going down to the Detroit area today and will not be back till late Wednesday afternoon. I plan on filling out a multi-day precipitation form when I get back.

12/23/2010 8:30 AM T T T 6.0 0.93 A trace of new snow this morning. A mild temperature of 28 degrees. We had a high of 34 yesterday which has made the snow a little more sticky and not as good for cross-country skiing. This morning at 8:30, we have Cloudy stratocumulus clouds filling the sky as we prepare for the birth of the Christ child. Merry Christmas!
12/24/2010 8:30 AM T T T 6.0 0.92 A little bit cooler (24F) this Christmas Eve morning. Another dusting of light snow. The forecast for Christmas Day has changed. They are now calling for a chance of snow which would be very nice!
12/25/2010 8:30 AM T T T 5.5 0.90 Merry Christmas! A trace of snow in the gauge and on the boards this Christmas morning. The current temperature at 8:30 is 21 degrees and the snow should be just right for a morning ski.
12/26/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 5.5 0.91 I hope everyone had a most enjoyable Christmas day. 23 degrees, with no new snow to report for the first time in a while. Our total snow depth continues to drop as a warm spell draws near. A rain changing over to snow is possible late next week. It always seems like we get a big messy storm around New Year's Day. On another note, it looks like the east coast is going to get their wish, a true nor easter. Hopefully it won't be too bad. The NWS has issued Blizzard warnings though, so if I were living out there I'd take it easy.
12/27/2010 8:40 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 5.5 0.90 A nippy 12 degrees with bright sunshine. A very hard frost!
12/28/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 5.5 0.95 24 degrees with overcast skies at our usual observation time this morning. I hope those in the east coast region are picking up the pieces after over a foot of snow fell in some regions out there. Here in the Great Lakes region we have had mixed skies the last couple of days. That will change soon though, with a warm-up coming and with it the chance of freezing rain and rain. The bad thing about it is that we are expecting to go back to the usually temperatures below freezing after the rain hits. Which means all that rain is going to freeze. We'll see how it pans out.
12/29/2010 8:00 AM T T T 5.5 0.95 29 degrees with some freezing fog hanging around. A light layer of ice around the gauge with a few flurries scattered around in the bottom. Trace reports again this morning, due to some early morning light snow yesterday. There is rain/freezing rain on its way for the area. I think we are going to lose our snow. Hopefully we will make up for this in January.
12/30/2010 8:15 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 5.0 0.94 A balmy 34 degrees with fog and drizzle falling. Not a very pleasant morning. At least the freezing rain is over and now we can focus on plain old rain. I'm still curious to see if this rain that's falling will freeze on the roads and other surfaces come Saturday night when temperatures drop below freezing.
12/31/2010 8:00 AM 0.05 0.0 0.00 2.0 0.47 Happy New Year's Eve everybody! We have lost about 3 inches of snow over the last 24 hours. Quite a bit of rain in the gauge for this past week or so (0.05). Most reports have been trace and no greater then that. 42 degrees is the temperature on the last CoCoRaHS reporting day of 2010. I think 2011 might start off with a bang in the snowfall category. It all depends on the El Nina conditions. Take care out there this New Year's Eve. I'll see you in 2011!
1/1/2011 8:30 AM 0.32 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Happy New Year once again! I still think it's kind of funny saying 2011, but we'll get used to it. I hope everyone survived the night last night. Only 0.01 inches of new rain from noon yesterday to this morning. 0.31 inches did fall though, between 10 AM till the early afternoon hours yesterday. A big warm-up last night right around 11 PM. The temperatures rose into the lower 50s, which is very unusual. 38 degrees on this New Year's Day and no snow on the ground, for the first time since late November. The warm temperatures last night finished it off. Only artificial piles remain, mixed in with some ice/snow patches in some areas.
1/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 0.7 T 1.0 0.02 The first snow of the year! Light and fluffy snow as well. Very nice for shoveling. A cold 16 degrees explains the fluffy texture of the snow.
1/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.01 0.2 0.01 1.0 0.02 21 degrees at 8AM, with a little bit of light snow on the ground. If we only had a few more inches of this nice snow, we could go out cross-country skiing. So far this January, temperatures are below normal. A chance of snow every day this week, with snow likely later in the week, I think we'll get some heavier accumulations then. My reports this morning seem to either contain a 1 or a 2 in them. This is not by accident though, just luck!
1/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.17 2.1 0.14 3.0 0.19 WOW! What a snow! Much more then I thought we would get. Everything is pretty now! The trees are pure white and are covered in heavy snow. 29 degrees and no wind to report. We might have enough snow for cross-country skiing.
1/5/2011 8:00 AM 0.06 1.3 0.04 4.0 0.22 A cold 18 degrees at the observation time this morning. Light flurries were falling at 8AM as well. The sun is trying to come out late this morning. The majority of the snow that was on the boards this morning, came from heavy snow yesterday morning ending around lunch time. Light snow showers continued into the evening hours yesterday.
1/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.5 0.02 3.5 0.30 The 0.5 inches of new snow, started falling late yesterday evening, right around 9PM or so. Light snow was falling at 8AM, with a temperature of 23 degrees. Much heavier snow has started to fall after 9AM.
1/7/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 0.8 0.02 4.0 0.28 15 degrees, with another light dusting of snow on the boards this morning. I recorded yesterday morning's snowfall around 11:45 AM, due to the sun coming out around 11:30 AM. 0.6 inches of snow had fallen, with 0.01 inches of precipitation in the gauge and on the snow board. We had a break in the action from 11:30 AM to 1:45 PM yesterday, when yet another heavy snow shower came into the Big Rapids area. On and off light snow showers continued into the evening and late night hours. The totals after 11:45 AM are as follows: 0.2 inches of snow and 0.02 inches of precipitation. That gives us a total snowfall of 0.8 inches of snow and 0.03 inches of precipitation, from the gauge. Our total snow depth has now hit 4 inches, when rounded to the nearest half inch.
1/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.04 0.4 0.03 4.0 0.31 A temperature of 5 below zero and clear skies, make for a very chilly morning. I didn't dare touch the metal on the shed door, for fear of getting stuck! The gauge was completely covered in thick frost, so I melted the snow inside instead of weighing the tube. These cold temperatures make the snow squeaky to walk on. It appears the lake effect snow is over for now. Only a chance of snow today, but so far it's a clear morning. Maybe we'll see the sun today?! It is Michigan, so I can't count on it!
1/9/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.5 0.34 Another below zero temperature morning. -0.5 degrees and clear skies. No snow to report for the first time since January 1st.
1/10/2011 8:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 3.5 0.37 A few flakes fell into the gauge yesterday from a brief heavy snow shower. Other then that, no snow on the boards once again this morning. 1 degree outside, with partly cloudy skies. We had a low last night of -0.9F, the third straight day temperatures have dropped below zero.
1/11/2011 8:00 AM T T T 3.5 0.35
1/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.07 0.7 0.08 4.0 0.46 19 degrees and a partially red overcast sky, make for a classic January morning in West Central Michigan. We have new snow to report. A nice and fluffy snow, with a low water content. Total snow depth is now back at 4 inches (4.15 inches to be exact).
1/13/2011 8:00 AM T 0.2 T 4.5 0.47 A nice dusting of fluffy new snow on the ground at the observation time. 18 degrees and no wind. We have overcast skies and light flurries are falling. It appears that Friday night into Saturday could bring us some fairly good accumulations.
1/14/2011 8:00 AM 0.05 1.0 0.04 5.5 0.56 More new snowfall to report again this morning. 18 degrees once again, and light snow is falling at 8 AM. Our total snow depth is now 5.5 inches again.
1/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.14 2.0 0.17 7.0 0.69 21 degrees with 2 inches of new snow on the ground. Our total snow depth has reached 7 inches. Almost 10 inches of snow has fallen this January.
1/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.1 0.01 6.0 0.64 A cold morning with temperatures hanging around in the teens. Quite a bit of blowing and drifting snow over the last 24 hours. There was a lot of variations in my snow board measurements, anywhere from 0.0 inches of snow to 0.6 inches of snow, due to the cold north wind. I'm not sure whether the rain gauge was accurate either. It is in a closed area, so the numbers should be fairly close for total precipitation over the last 24 hours. In addition, our total snow depth has gone down an inch due to the blowing snow and the settling that occurred yesterday. We had also had numerous times yesterday where the sun would pop out while it was snowing, which could also be a factor in the snow melt.
1/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 0.73 Temperatures are again in the teens this morning, with a brutal south wind blowing, dropping temperatures into the single digits. We have more snow headed this way! I'm glad they ruled out the possibility of freezing rain!
1/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.34 5.0 0.46 10.5 1.33 WOW! We got a TON of snow! 5 inches of new snow, with over 10 inches on the ground. A heavy, wet snow, but certainly not for packing. The temperatures have been rising all night and this morning. 27 degrees is the temperature at 8 AM. Our total snowfall for the winter stands at 23.6 inches, with 15 inches falling this January so far. NOTE: Much of the snow that fell was coming from a southeast direction. My gauge is slightly at an angle toward the west, which is part of the reason why my melted value from the core amount is a much higher value.
1/19/2011 8:00 AM T T T 10.0 1.34 11 degrees this morning with light snow falling. A trace of new snow in the gauge and on the boards. We've had some blowing snow over the last 24 hours, but mainly the winds have been below 10 mph. The total snow depth has gone down a half an inch due to settling.
1/20/2011 8:00 AM 0.01 0.4 T 10.5 1.35 14 degrees is the temperature this morning, with light and fluffy snow falling. More snow is expected for the rest of today and tonight. So far, it looks like we'll have light accumulations for this area. Meanwhile, the arctic air from an Alberta Clipper, moves closer to Michigan.
1/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.06 0.8 0.05 10.5 1.41 A very cold temperature of 4 degrees at the observation time this morning. We have partially clear skies with a bright sun just peeking up over the horizon. Light flurries are also falling. Not as much snow here on the east side of Big Rapids, only 0.8 inches, when I average all three snowboard readings. Much more snow fell across the river on the west side of town. About 2 inches of new snow was reported over there.
1/22/2011 8:30 AM 0.03 1.0 0.02 11.5 M We were a little bit late in reporting this morning due to having some company over. Reporting late does not stop the snow though. An inch of new snow with about 2 inches of more snow expected today. The cold weather has arrived! 6 degrees at 8:30, with wind chills yesterday reaching below zero. A high of only about 11 degrees yesterday as well. Great skiing weather! NOTE: NO TOTAL CORE SAMPLE FROM THE GROUND TODAY.
1/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.4 0.01 11.0 1.38 Brutal temperatures this morning. It's about -10 degrees out their right now, and no wind. A few ice pellets were falling around the observation time as well. A low of -14 degrees recorded here on the east side of Big Rapids. The airport had a low temperature of -22F, which is an all time record for this date. It breaks the previous record of -16F set in 2005.
1/24/2011 8:00 AM T 0.2 T 11.0 M Steady snow falling at the 8AM observation time this morning. We have another cold temperature of 7 degrees as well. Not as cold as yesterday morning though, when we dipped well below zero. I know it's SWE Monday, but the snow is coming down too hard to get an accurate reading. I try and record total snow core every day, so hopefully we'll get it done tomorrow.
1/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.4 0.03 10.5 1.69 Some kind of drizzle falling at 8AM, with the gauge and other surfaces covered in a thin coat of ice. A trace of ice on top of 0.4 inches of snow, that fell primarily before 1PM yesterday. Temperatures yesterday stayed steady in the upper teens to around 20F, until the late evening hours, when they climbed into the mid-20s. At about 6PM yesterday, the freezing drizzle, mist and fog swept in. The good news this morning, is that it appears the fog is lifting, so hopefully by later this morning we'll get back to our usual overcast weather. Warmer weather is expected for today and the rest of this week. Another cool down is expected next week, with more chances of snow coming up, after today and tomorrow. NOTE: I took a total core sample of the snow this morning, and found out that it has really gone up since Sunday. This is likely due to the warmer weather. The snow is getting heavier.
1/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.01 T T 10.0 1.91 Just a dusting of sleet/snow on the boards this morning. A mild 27 degrees at 8AM. We had a high of 30 degrees yesterday, which is the highest temperature we have seen in at least a week or two. Some sort of precipitation was falling around 8AM. It felt like rain almost. Very interesting weather these past few days. We need more snow to meet the average, though. Currently, our total snowfall this winter is 26.8 inches (6 inches more than last year at this time).
1/27/2011 8:30 AM 0.01 T T 10.0 M The snow is starting to accumulate out there. Only an inch expected today, though. A fairly light snow falling, with a temperature of 26 degrees. It appears that Friday night could bring some pretty good accumulations of 3 inches or more to the area.
1/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 0.6 0.04 10.5 1.60 24 degrees and flurries falling, with more new snow to report. We had some fairly heavy snow bands come into the area yesterday morning into early afternoon. A nice fluffy snow on top of the snow that fell yesterday. This "fluffy" snow, most likely fell late last night. Temperatures must be just cool enough to give us that kind of snow. The NWS has just put us under a Winter Weather Advisory due to some good accumulations expected tonight. They're calling for 4 inches, so we'll see if that really takes shape. If we due get 2 inches or more, our total snow depth will reach the one foot mark. Hopefully, we won't get the chance of seeing two feet or more of snow on ground, because my ruler only goes up to two feet. The core sample today was down from previous days, due to some compressing. Also, the snow is getting lighter due to colder temperatures.
1/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.17 2.7 0.17 13.0 1.84 The snow has finally stopped! The temperature at 8 AM is 16 degrees, with very light new snow on the ground. Only 2.7 inches of new snow, compared to the 4 inches the NWS was calling for. Just like I figured, our total snow depth has topped 13 inches! I find it simply amazing that my melted snow from the gauge and core sample from the board came out to 0.17 inches.
1/30/2011 8:00 AM T T T 12.0 1.75 We're back to cold mornings today. The temperature at 8AM is about 10 degrees. The sun is just rising above the clouds. We have a bunch of factories around this area running full blast all the time. This morning a very interesting thing is happening relating to the exhaust poring out of the buildings. The bright colors coming from the rising sun are making the exhaust turn a reddish-orange color. It almost looks like the building is on fire! This is something I have not seen, but yet I am not surprised. Our sun can certainly play tricks on us! A trace of new snow on the boards with a big winter storm possible early next week. Winter storm watches have been issued for many counties south of the Big Rapids area. We'll see if those creep up toward us as the day goes on. NOTE: The total core sample was taken from another location where I measure total snow depth. I have three areas around the house that I use to measure total snow depth. Also, as you can see from the total snow depth reading of 12 inches, our snow has settled a bit. We had quite a bit of sun yesterday as well helping this process.
1/31/2011 8:00 AM T T T 12.0 1.81 A light dusting of snow on the boards again this morning. We might very well have snow on the boards again tomorrow, due to a chance of more snow today. 5 degrees at 8AM with a projected high of about 20 today. Meanwhile, the super-storm forms and gets closer.
2/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.07 1.1 0.09 12.5 M 11 degrees with steady snow falling at 8AM. We have an inch of new snow with "big snow" expected tonight into tomorrow. The storm is really something to watch on radar. It's very big and should bring some good snowfall to many areas across the Midwest. The only complaint I have is the media. They seem to by hyping this storm as if it's "the end of the world." Somehow I think we'll manage. We American's are used to this kind of stuff. Just leave us alone so we can deal with it. I just found a yard stick in case the total snow depth gets up to 36 inches, which I highly doubt it will. Who knows though? It could very well reach that point. Anything is possible the way this winter has gone. The temperatures lately have been just right for cross-country skiing. At least we can be thankful that we're not receiving wet and heavy snow. The NWS issued a Winter Storm Warning for most of lower Michigan. A Blizzard Warning was issued as well for a Grand Rapids line and south. Up here in Big Rapids, we'll have near-blizzard conditions. 8 inches of new snow is the number to watch for this area.
2/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.35 10.8 0.93 18.5 M Very hard to measure anything this morning. We have near two feet drifts with two of the boards covered in over 10 inches of new snow. I now have found out how hard it is to measure snow when you can't even tell where your board is! Well over a foot of snow on the ground and very hard to walk through. It's time to shovel out! THIS IS A CORRECTION TO MY LAST REPORT. I AM NOW AVERAGING ONLY TWO OF THE THREE SNOW BOARDS. STORM TOTAL: 10.8 INCHES.
2/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.2 0.01 18.0 2.84 A nice sunny, but cold morning. About -7F at 8AM with tiny ice crystals falling. I was very busy this morning shoveling out paths to my 3 total snow depth measuring areas. Lots of snow to shovel, that's for sure. My total core sample this morning is OFF THE CHARTS. I weighed the snow in the gauge and it came out to 1,055 grams. This is the most snow I have seen in the 6 years I've been recording weather data from Big Rapids, in a LONG TIME. We had some hefty snow storms back 5 or 6 years ago, according to my records. Of course, back then I was ESTIMATING snowfall, instead of doing it accurately.
2/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 17.0 M Finally, the day has come! For the first time in over 17 DAYS we have no precipitation to report. A temperature of 19 degrees, makes for a very mild morning. Our total snow depth is rapidly going down. We lost about an inch due to some melting and compressing yesterday. Now we only have 17 inches on the ground. I'm going to savor this moment, because more snow is on the way for next week.
2/5/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 16.0 M No snow to report and 8 degrees this morning. There's an orange glow in the horizon toward the rising sun, with rows of vanilla colored altocumulus clouds. Over the last 24 hours, we have lost another inch of snow, due to melting. Yesterday, temperatures ALMOST reached 33 degrees (32.9 degrees was the actual temperature). Don't worry though, another cold snap is coming next week.
2/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 15.0 M Mild weather persists for West Michigan this morning. But that will come to a close soon with colder temperatures coming next week, starting tomorrow. A high of 35F yesterday, which is a good 8 degrees above average. Lots of melting going on out there even this morning with a temperature of 27 degrees. More snow is coming for today and tonight. I see it gradually crossing the lake. It should be quite sticky snow, though. Not very good skiing conditions. Hopefully, we can get some lighter snow next week.
2/7/2011 8:15 AM 0.14 1.5 0.11 16.0 3.05 We have snow to report this morning! A thin layer of ice beneath the 1.5 inches of new snow. This is due to the transition betwee warm temperatures yesterday (lower 30s), and the cooler temperatures last night and this morning. 23 degrees at 8:15 and overcast. We had a scare last night with a gas leak, but luckily it was contained. What a sound, though!
2/8/2011 8:00 AM T 0.1 T 16.5 M -7 degrees at 8AM with clear skies. A bit of hoar frost on the gauge. We have light snow amounts this morning. Colder weather is expected for today and the rest of this week. High temperatures should only be in the teens to lower twenties.
2/9/2011 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 T 16.0 M 10 degrees with an 11MPH wind blowing from WNW this morning. Wind chills are near the -10 degree mark as well with these gusty winds blowing. A little bit of new snow on the boards and in the gauge. We have light snow and blowing snow coming down also.
2/10/2011 8:00 AM T T T 15.5 M -3 degrees with a nice blanket of reddish-orange stratus clouds. A trace of snow.
2/11/2011 9:00 AM T 0.2 T 15.5 M
2/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.10 1.7 0.10 17.0 M Fairly light snow fell yesterday evening and late last night, giving us close to 2 inches of new snow. Sunshine and 21 degrees start the day this morning. A little bit of blowing and drifting snow was observed.
2/13/2011 8:00 AM 0.04 0.7 0.04 17.0 M Possibly some freezing fog on the rain gauge this morning. We have a MILD temperature of 30 degrees with fairly heavy new snow on the ground. Luckily, we didn't receive very much last night. 30 degrees is nothing compared to the high temperature expected today, which is 40 degrees. I think we'll get there. Next week, a BIG WARM-UP is in the forecast. Temperatures might hit 50 degrees with rain. Definitely a February Thaw!
2/14/2011 8:15 AM T 0.0 0.00 13.5 4.02 A few drops in the gauge at 8:15 this morning with gusty winds. I'm recording wind speeds of up to 25MPH with a peak wind so far of 30MPH since I cleared my weather data late last night. Overcast as well. A rain/snow mix is possible today, but very little chance of that happening. These strong winds should help the snow melt, as well as above freezing temperatures. We had a balmy high temperature of 43 degrees yesterday here in B.R. NOTE: The core sample from the ground is REALLY HIGH, due to compressing of the snow. I had to use a spade to get down to the ground, and in the process chipped my gauge, but we got it done! Also, very sticky snow. No surprises there!
2/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.5 M No precipitation to report this morning with a very cold temperature of 8 degrees at 8 AM. 8 degrees is quite cold compared to the fairly warm weather yesterday (mid to upper 30s). Surprisingly, our total snow depth has not gone down at all, despite the melting that did occur yesterday. There are lots of icy puddles out there this morning, making it very hard to walk around. More warm weather for today with temperatures expected to hit 38 degrees. We'll get into the 40s by tomorrow.
2/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 13.5 M 35 degrees with less then a tenth of an inch of ice on the snow boards. All precipitation in the gauge was rain for the first time this year. Our total snow depth has gone down even though it's still 13.5 inches. We were at 13.67 inches for the last two days. This morning we broke that mark reaching 13.33 inches, but there still is 13.5 inches of icy and sticky snow on the ground. Hopefully, we get more sunshine today then yesterday. We had mostly cloudy skies yesterday with a few light sun rays peaking through every once and a while. Not exactly a sunny day by my standards. The temperature of 46 is the number to watch today. If we hit that, it will be a new high temperature this year. The only problem is that temperatures are most likely going into the 50s tomorrow. Happy February Thaw!
2/17/2011 8:30 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 11.0 M Overcast with some signs of light fog at 8:30 this morning. We had some pretty thick fog last night though. 44 degrees at the observation time with temperatures expected to climb into the 50s today. Finally, our total snow depth has gone down a little bit.
2/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 7.0 M The February thaw is almost over (temperatures are still above freezing this morning), after about 3 days of melting. We have lost 10 inches of snow since the 13th of this month. Temperatures yesterday did not hit 50 degrees, but we did hit 50 degrees (right on the button), late last night. Surprisingly, we reached 51 degrees on the 16th which was certainly not expected. Mostly clear skies this morning with wandering cirrus and stratus cloud formations. A wind advisory has been issued, so winds should start picking up as the morning goes on. I see grass in some spots!
2/19/2011 8:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 M Nice and sunny this morning but brutally cold. 21 degrees is a big step down from temperatures in the upper 40s for much of last week. The winds are still brisk like much of yesterday. A peak wind of 33 MPH yesterday with gusts up to 40 MPH or above. Just when we thought winter was over, a big winter storm is coming this way. It appears that the Big Rapids area might get up to 8 inches of snow Sunday into Sunday night.
2/20/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 M 22 degrees with overcast skies. The storm approaches! 10 inches of snow possible up here in Central Michigan.
2/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.33 10.6 1.49 12.0 1.95 We have lots of blowing and drifting snow outside this morning. Over 10 inches of new snow was derived from averaging. I only used two snow boards though, because the table out back had virtually no snow on it. The board back by my rain gauge had over 14 inches of snow on it. Luckily, this snow is very light and fluffy. The only problem is our base snow is very crusty and icy from the melting and freezing over the last week. 17 degrees at 8AM with gusty winds. Light snow has been falling on and off throughout the morning.
2/22/2011 8:00 AM T T T 11.0 M It's very hard to measure snow boards when they have been blown over with 5 inches or so of snow. That's mainly the reason why I am reporting a "trace" of new snow this morning. Most of the snow yesterday was blowing around and accumulated on my snow boards, but we did have some light snow showers throughout the morning and late morning hours. The temperature is 2 degrees at 8 AM with no wind. Yesterday we had another peak wind of 34MPH. It's been a windy month!
2/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.5 M It's very cold outside this morning. -1 degrees at 8 AM with the sun just peeking up over the horizon. A wintry mix is possible tonight.
2/24/2011 9:00 AM 0.02 0.2 0.02 10.5 M There are light snow amounts this morning and 27 degrees. A little bit of fog outside as well. It appears that we're in for another storm come Sunday and Monday. Hopefully, most of the precipitation will be rain and not freezing rain.
2/25/2011 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.5 M
2/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.04 0.8 0.03 10.5 M Almost an inch of new powder-snow this morning. Light snowflakes were falling at 8AM but have stopped since then. The temperature is a cool 18 degrees making this latest batch of snow very light and powdery. A wintry mess for Sunday night into Monday is expected.
2/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.10 3.2 0.10 13.0 M It's a wintry wonderland outside this morning! A nice bunch of snow for this batch. We have a rather mild 22 degrees with no wind. No blowing or drifting snow associated with this system. We should get some pretty good winds come Monday, though. NOTE: We had light snow showers throughout the morning and early afternoon hours yesterday. The heavier snow moved in around 2:40 PM and lasted into the late night hours.
2/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 11.5 2.17 The expert Meteorologists (I'm sorry to say), got this storm all wrong. No snow, rain, freezing rain, here! Jim Lehocky (9&10 News Chief Meteorologist), did say that the computer models were going all over the place. So, I think that had a big part in the way this storm took shape. Most of the precipitation fell south of Big Rapids, around the Grand Rapids area. We did have a thin line of snow come in around 4 AM, but none of the snow reached the ground. The hopes of a sunny day are present!
3/1/2011 8:10 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.5 M
3/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.0 M 21 degrees with a colorful stratus sunrise!
3/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.0 M A cold temperature (13F), in the teens this morning with overcast altostratus clouds present. Yesterday we had wonderful sunshine all day, with highs only reaching the mid 20s. Today, we might just see some more sunshine. A little warmer temperatures today expected.
3/4/2011 8:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 9.0 M We have light freezing rain falling at 8AM with a thin layer (TRACE) of ice on top of all surfaces. Things could be much worse outside. I don't think the roads have too much ice on them, because the local schools around Big Rapids did not close this morning. It's surprising to see a temperature of 24 degrees as this freezing rain falls. Technically it could snow right now, but there must be a warm air pocket hanging above us giving us this type of rain.
3/5/2011 8:30 AM 0.70 1.1 0.08 11.0 M 1.1 inches of new snow with about a half an inch or partially melted ice underneath. Can you say...WHAT A MESS!!?!?!
3/6/2011 8:10 AM 0.03 0.4 0.03 11.0 M A nice bright and sunny morning but very cold. We have temperatures in the teens with crusty and crunchy snow. All my snow boards have about a good chunk of solid ice on them. Hopefully, I can crack away at that as temperatures begin to warm up above freezing.
3/7/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.5 3.04 Another chilly morning in West Michigan. About 10 degrees at 8 AM. We have been having some strange temperature differences between high and low temperatures. In February, our average low was 13.5F, while our average high was 32F (data from my Weather Station). Definitely some freezing and thawing going on! I somehow managed to get a total snow core from the gauge. I had to use a spade to chunk away at the icy snow.
3/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.0 M A wintry mess is still in the forecast for tomorrow and tomorrow night. We seem to be on the edge of a freezing rain/snow/rain line, whenever these systems come through. A mild 22 degrees this morning with a frozen solid snow pack.
3/9/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.1 T 9.5 M A blustery morning with heavy snow (mixed with some sleet), falling. 30 degrees is the temperature. We have winds up to 22 MPH blowing from the NE. The roads don't look that bad this morning, but they could get worse as the day goes on. Freezing rain is expected, which could really slick up the roads. Near white-out conditions this morning, as Don (FL-HB-70) and I say! NOTE: Some considerable melting went on yesterday (high of 38 degrees), which explains our total snow depth of 9.5 inches. We still have a frozen snow pack, but that should change to slush in the next couple of days.
3/10/2011 8:15 AM 0.36 4.4 0.36 12.5 M Weather events over the last 24 hours in Chronological order: HEAVY SNOW yesterday from the early morning hours (around 8AM), to 1:20 PM in the afternoon, giving us 4.1 inches of snow. LIGHT RAIN TO MODERATE FALLING RAIN started around 2 PM until the late evening hours, when all precipitation stopped. Temperatures have been steady around freezing for the entire period. We did have a high temperature of 34 degrees during the rainy part of the event. Light snow is falling and probably has been falling since about 6 AM or so. 0.3 inches of snow accumulation so far from these latest snow showers. TOTAL SNOWFALL: 4.4 inches.
3/11/2011 8:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 11.5 M 29 degrees with about 11.5 inches of snow on the ground. Prayers for all those involved with the Tsunami. This once again reminds us of the beauties and the horrors of mother nature.
3/12/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 11.5 M 36 degrees with the hopes of considerable melting going on today and for next week.
3/13/2011 9:00 AM 0.04 0.3 0.03 10.5 M A nice coating of wet snow with a temperature of 32 degrees this morning. Precipitation yesterday was a mix of freezing rain/sleet until the late afternoon hours when temperature slowly dipped toward the freezing mark, turning the precipitation into wet snow flakes. Happy Daylight Savings Time! I hope you all made the adjustment smoothly.
3/14/2011 10:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.0 3.15 It's nice to see the sun out and temperatures creeping above freezing. Not Florida weather, but the best we can do here in Central Michigan this time of year.
3/15/2011 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.0 M 21 degrees with a blanket of stratus clouds. The sun is just peeking through as I write these comments. A high of 45 degrees is in the forecast with temperatures warming up to the 50s by later this week. I think we might have a Spring this year (knock on wood)!
3/16/2011 9:55 AM 0.06 0.0 0.00 8.5 M Some icy chunks in the gauge this morning and bright sunshine. The temperatures has just hit 52 degrees. At this rate, we might hit 60 today. Light freezing rain/rain came through the area late last night around the midnight hour.
3/17/2011 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.5 M A very mild morning. 43 degrees with ominous looking stratus clouds. It looks and feels like spring! I expect our 6.5 inches of snow will be mostly gone by tomorrow. The rain tonight should melt it all away.
3/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A few small snow piles still hanging around, but mainly no snow on the ground at my three measuring areas. 39 degrees with a pink cirrus sky this morning. A little bit of rain in the gauge from some late evening showers yesterday which continued into the overnight hours.

3/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.14 3.1 0.39 6.5 1.40 A nice bright and sunny morning with a temperature of 10 degrees. Not exactly Spring weather, that's for sure! I recorded 3.1 inches of new snow from some late morning snow showers yesterday and snow showers late last night. I think that some of the snow that accumulated on my board, could have been from drifting, but it's the closest I can get to the accurate mark. A period of dry weather is now settling in.
3/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 M Another chilly March morning. Sunny and 7 degrees. Brrrrrrrr!!!!
3/26/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 4.5 M 11 degrees and sunny this morning with no wind to report. This will be one of my last CoCoRaHS reports. I'm leaving for basic military training with the Air Force on Monday. My Dad will keep this station going when I'm gone. I would like to thank Nolan and everyone on the CoCoRaHS team for all the hard work in making this network an awesome thing. And to all the observers out there, keep up the great work.
