Ground soaked up all water - no puddles. Mon Temps = 74/53, a lovely sunny clear day until about 4:30 when cloud cover took over & the sky progressingly took on an ominous face. Lightening moved in about 7pm, followed by Thunder & rain @ 7:18. The rain came down pretty nicely - while it lasted. In about 1/2 hour got 1/3" - need 24 -36 hrs. more of that in order to start re-filling the ponds & creeks - even many of the larger ones are way down w/dry spots. Just a little reminder of The Great Drought 75 yrs. ago.

Tho sun tried to break thru a few times, it was unsuccessful until sundown when could see some colorful clouds to the Westas the ground Fog came up. Just a damp & chilly day. Still need more rain as yesterday's didn't do much & ponds, etc. still mostly drying out.

It was all over by 10pm & the Gauge had .24". We definitely need more rain. While this drop in the bucket helped a little, the ground sorely needs a good soaking over a few days & the ponds, rivers, etc. are really low.

A "crazy" am as had to read everything & get household started early so could vote by 7am as husband has to travel to work. But voting is very important - too many men & women have died (& are dying) to ensure we have this freedom (even if the "moronic" politicians try to degrade the process as evidenced by their campaign rhetoric & accepting bribes (contributions by lobbyists & big business). Mon Temps = 63/47º, w/cool NE breezes, never saw the sun for the clouds. About 6pm deep Thunder followed by gusting winds & rain which, unfortunately only gave us .23" when gauge emptied @ 10pm. It was nip & tuck for a while as she birthed them several hrs. apart Monday & was confused as to which was hers. Had to supplement both last night & this am & now she's got the message since they both smell the same. Funny, she's filled in as "nurse cow" in the past when we had a problem. We guess that HSUS (a/k/a PETA) would say we're cruel keeping them in pastures & tending to their needs & trying to correct problems - but we care & take the best possible care of our charges. Tues Temps = 74/47º, sunny w/much milder breezes. Mother is still trimming her trees. "Momma" (our 13+ yr old cow) had her 1st set of twins this Mon. afternoon & night. Hopefully she'll take both now that she's let them nurse shortly after birthing, but one never knows for a few days.

About 4pm air started to become very heavy w/water & by 5:30 the water/snow in the air lightly dampened skin & clothing, but nothing fell to the ground.

Remains of Snow - gone. Tues Temps = 42/19º, sun actually broke thru thick cloud cover several times making for a nice, if cool (due to air movement) day.

Limited visibility due to icy hazy conditions, but sure makes for a lovely sunrise - all those lovely oranges/pinks/mauves/reds thru a "shear kitchen curtain". Wed Temps = 45/20º not a bad day, but a little on the icy-breeze size as the mild breezes were coming from the N.

Howver, under Special Weather Alert for Mon & Tues for strong storms including Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain & frigid Temps. Guess our short spurt of Spring/Summer is going to be over. Fri Temps = 64/25º. What a beautiful day, even the breezes were almost nil. Think Mother fooled the birds as they were flying around as if ready to build new nests even tho there are plenty still left over from last year (can see them, now that the leaves are gone).

Winter Storm Watch now from Mon pm thru late Tue pm - guess we're going to catch up w/the rest of MO & the East Coast. Sat. Temps = 73/28º what a gorgeous day - definitely Summer in Winter. Couldn't have asked for a better day, esp. as moving cattle & equip., etc. in prep. for the forecasted Winter weather.

By 6am 7.5" Snow = .69" water - & the Blizzard continues (all 2,100 mi of it). Mon Temps = 43/28º. A very wet Fog/Mist moved in about 10am necessitating the use of wipers. Today has the feel of that of the Jan. 07 Ice Storm - warm Temps/wet, drizzly air & a storm due. As day progressed drizzle increased & N whipping winds came on. Locked all livestock we could (esp. "due to calve" 1st Calf Heifers) into barns or areas where they had shelter as forecasts also calling for heavy Ice & don't want a repeat of the 1/07 Ice Storm. Gauge is empty @ 10pm.
2/2/2011 8:25 AM 0.75 10.7 0.75 18.2 1.42 Wed 8:20am 1º, (WC @ -10º), H=85%, DP -1º, AP 30.42", N winds near double digits & sunny. Wind built a "dune" around gauge so can't empty (tho wouldn't be accurate anyway). Took several measurements where seems winds didn't whip Snow. All figures pretty much estimates. Now to dig out (1) waterers, (2) gates so can give hay to livestock & make paths for calves & (3) dig out barn doors. Still not as bad as they've gotten in the East & are getting now from this Storm. Tues Temps = 28/10º, Blizzard conditions all day. Dry, fluffy Snow violently blowing in all directions, closing off all doors to house & creating drifts up to 4-5 ft in some areas & clearing Snow off to grass in others. Under Winter Weather Advisory until 9am Wed. & Wind Chill Advisory until 9am Thurs

Moved a lot of Snow yesterday, opening paths, etc., & had little place to put it, so areas to check depths greatly reduced - to only 3 or 4. Should get mail today - don't want to miss any of those bills!!! Wed Temps = 13/-2º Thankful for a strong Sun, which, in spite of the freezing cold made worse by the N & NW winds, did some melting & kept one "warmish" (not discounting the several layers of clothes & heaters in vehicles). Under Wind Chill Advisory until 10am Friday. National Guard & plows in evidence as they checked for stranded vehicles - including the oil tanker that ran off the road in the Blizzard last evening. Second day of no mail - not surprising as roads impassible until late afternoon, & then only 1 lane open (anyone driving had to hope they didn't meet a vehicle coming in the opposite direction). Took & melted 6" samples of Snow at 1 point & got varying water results from .6" - .11" water. In late afternoon Snow formed a thick hard crust from a combo of melting/winds/Temps. It seems that at least 3 large flocks of Snow Geese have taken up residence in our N. Prairie - boy, they are noisy & when they rise (of course, in groups) they scare the calves.

Still under Wind Chill Advisory til 10am. Thurs Temps = 18/-12º, sun finally made it thru clouds by 10am & controlled skies rest of day - but not quite as strong as Wed. Finished dozing out all gates but 7 or 8 on the Homestead (some areas, i.e. Prairie), not in use now so no need to fight way out there, esp. as the drifts are mammoth. Winds cooperated by staying calm to very light. A lot of melting - but no areas we can get to easily that haven't been worked over - translates to, snow dumped there. No mail again. About 4:30pm left ranch to see what road conditions are - still pretty much snow-covered & icy, but wanted to check as Al's going to work tomorrow.

Fri Temps = 26/-3º, cloudy w/minimal air movement. Felt warmer than it was. Snow started about 1pm @ a nice rate & contd. into the night, but tapering off after sundown. The Snow Geese that settled here during/after the Storm, have increased in # & we think there are many hundreds, if not into the thousands - can't see the snow on the Prairie fr. the Wetlands fence East & they have spread into the lands just to our North. They're noisier than having upstairs inconsiderate neighbors & the calves & barn cats get very nervous when they swarm. Hope their fertilizer is as good as that of our livestock.
2/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.5 0.63 Sun. 8am H=88%, DP 28º, AP 29.85", little W air movement & sun is trying to break thru clouds. Sat. Temps = 43/14º a gorgeous strong warming sun all day causing a lot of melting. Gentle cold breezes. The Blizzard the other day destroyed the rest of the birds' nests that remained in the trees. Had to get livestock feed yesterday, but roads so icy that only got 1/2 a load & couldn't use the box truck. The pick-up had a hard time holding the roads - 14 mi. took just under an hour.

Light Snow squall @ 7am & then a few more light ones, intermittent minimal Snow flurries thru day until sun finally broke thru cloud cover @ 2:55pm when sun made a strong appearance for about 30-40min, then again about 5pm until sundown. Before sun's appearance a raw day & very slippery underfoot. Under Winter Weather Advisory for Snow fr. 6pm Tues thru 6pm Wed.

Tues Temps = 17/9º, a raw, cloudy day w/no sign of sun. A 40-50 min. period of light, blowing Snow between 10 & 11am, then nothing for rest of day. Of course, with weather coming in, our calving season has started today - 14 days early!

Wed Temps = 16/-1º, when Snow ended, about noon-ish, sun came out quite strong & bright. Even w/that "heat" it was a bone-chilling cold. Winds during the small Snow Storm brought back drifts (some like sand dunes).

Sure hope that the forecasters are right about the warm-up next week. Have found an awful lot of dead birds this Winter - even more than during/after the '07 Ice Storm! Thurs Temps = 23/-11, a nice strong sun which melted a lot of the Snow, in spite of the freezing cold Temps. Had the thought as "stumbling" thru the Snow & "Frozen Fertilizer" that we think we're so advanced - we walk upright. Had the sense that the cows were watching & laughing to themselves. They don't trip thru the Snow & FF, they walk on all 4's & their feet are pretty straight for better balance & footing in this & muddy weather.

This is both good & bad, as in places your slogging in water reaching you lower calves or trudging thru wet, soggy Snow - but the air was warm, even if the breezes were on the cool side.
2/14/2011 6:20 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T Mon 6:15am 41º, H=66%, DP 31º, AP 30.18", barely any N air movement, clouds not obscuring the sunrise. Sun. Everything was "ideal" except for the Snow & Puddles from the melting Snow (ground still frozen & can't absorb the water) which made it slippery underfoot & water, in some places, over 6". But we'll take it if we can get rid of Winter.

Ground finally absorbing the waters from the melting Snow, but lost a lot in the beginning to run-off when ground so frozen.

Had to call Vet about 7:30pm as one of our 1st CH's went into labor & the calf presented backwards (breech birth). Both survived & we have a beautiful new heifer & doting mother. This was the 1st time in the 10 yrs we've here. Unfortunately computer hacked & had to wait to get it cleaned before could use internet, ergo the almost 10pm report - sorry.

It is a pity, the weeds we have are very nutritious (some even more so than the grasses), but if left to go to seed they'll overtake the place. The answer is to break out the seed head & leave the rest of the plant - the "best of both worlds" so to say.

Now to see if the Rains will only come, it is so dry that we are wary of fires flaring up, esp. as it is 4th of July weekend & some people just can't resist firing off those fireworks. The water jumped over us in both the 1st & 2nd set of T-storms. However, fr. 10-10:50pm we were "entertained" by the 2nd wave of Thunder & Lightning that made the big firework displays look like nothing.

Just annoys the H… out of me when the "cities" get the rain - concrete doesn't need the water, flora & wildlife need it.

July only had 1.65" of Precip. & 17 days over 100º w/THI's +105º - not good. Sun. Temps = 103/74º - nary a drop falling fr. the sky & virtually only water in ponds is in the Prairie Pond which has trees all around it & it's down to about 4'. If things don't change soon (i.e good rain), we'll look like Texas. Had to put out hay again - in the Prairie as even those grasses drying out. Heat Advisory changed to Excessive Heat Warning thru Wed 7pm (& probably w/b extended).

It's so hot one can barely concentrate. Excessive Heat Warning extended to Thurs. & will probably be extended further. Mon Temps = 109/76º sun didn't let up, even burning up the Prairie. Getting concerned about Prego Heifers & Cows - due to calve late August. At 5pm it was 109º (not the THI, the actual Temp)! Some short periods of sun being obscured by clouds, but that only made it more horrendous. Getting very concerned about Spring Calvers, esp. the 1st Calf Heifers, they're due at the end of the month, but past experience is that the calving begins about 2 wks. early - & that's by AI's females.

About 12:30am a dry T-storm moved in w/booming Thunder & serious Lightning - after 4am light rain (but .03" better than what we've had recently). Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10am & still under Excessive Heat Warning until 7pm tonight. Wed Temps = 105/78º another ridiculously hot day w/THI's out of sight.

T-storm ended sometime after 12:30am, but no puddles as ground soaked up the .11" in no time. Thurs Temps = 99/71º a hot & stickly am under the clouds until about 1:30pm when sun broke thru & then it was just hot & breezy. T-storms moved in @ 11:35pm w/booming Thunder & Lightning, followed by a nice downpour 10 min. later which lasted past midnight. EHW extended until 7pm Sun.

Fri Temps = 107/74º before the sun took over, after 11am, a few short showers left .08" in the gauge. A hot day w/blazing sun & hazy. About 5pm a few cold large drops fell & the sun disappeared. At 6:43pm sudden strong Thunder blasts rent the air, followed by rolling Thunder & the air was sucked away. Rain @ 6:51 T-storm rolled in in full force & cont'd. rolling thru. It was gone faster than it came in, leaving another .05" in the Gauge. At 10pm Temps still in mid-90's w/H=52% & DP 72º, but strong, gusting & coolish winds fr. SE to 25 mph. We'll take the total of .27" over 3 days - we don't have a choice & maybe this little bit helped the greenery - it certainly did nothing for the ponds/creeks, etc. Can't complain tho - look @ Ok, NM, Tex, etc., they'd give anything for even this little bit of rain.

Temps = 103/76º what can you say but - IT IS DARNED HOT!!! Shortly after 10pm T-storms, some of them violent (happy that Lightning wasn't hitting here), moved in S-SE of us & saw some Lightning to the NW-E, but nothing here - nary a drop. Hopefully they won't have to further extend the E.H.Warning further than Sun @ 7pm.

At approx. 5:30am another booming T-storm hit. When emptied gauge had 1.20" (including 1st wave Sun). No weather warnings in effect so far for today, only forecasting more T-storms - maybe this Drought w/b over along w/ridiculously hi Temps. Grasses up to pale green in some spots. No flooding here as ground soaked up whatever didn't run off during storms. Sun. Temps = 109/71º by noon strong whipping winds back (like after 10pm last night), tho sun out strongly. About 5:50pm the clouds took over & the winds picked up even more & the sky turned ominous. Shortly after 6pm the Nat'l Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for: (1) Lawrence Cty til 1am Mon, &, (2) Dade Cty til 10pm tonight (tho we're in L.C., we're only 3 mi So. of Dade & often get both forecasts). 1st wave hit @ 6:34pm coming in w/booming Thunder, strong gusting winds & very little Lightning, lasting 50 min. & leaving .50" in gauge. 2nd wave hit about 8:30pm & only lasted about 30 min., but didn't empty gauge. Mon Temps = 70/87º temps fell all day, helped by frequent rain showers & T-storms. The whipping, gusting winds starting to come from the NE didn't help either. Precip. over by 9pm, tho Thunder & Lightning cont'd. thru night. During the late am/early pm saw some of the most interesting cloud formations & colors - all in shades of steel to gunmetal gray & mostly in tubular shapes. Always knew about sun showers, but sun T-storms - we've had plenty today!!!

About 5:14pm started hearing Thunder as it moved closer. About 7:50pm 1st T-storm moved it w/a fury & punishing winds, followed by light rains. This pattern cont'd thru the night & into early Sat am.

Hopefully Tropical Storm Lee will push the systems around to bring us more as while any big of water helps, the "drought" is still drying out the grasses - even those that usually flourish @ this time. Ground still not soft, but a little easier to pull some weeds (which were "cemented" in by the dryness). No flooding as ground & floral soaking it up as soon as it hits. More rains forecasted for the next few days - hope they're right. Fri Temps = 62/51º a chilly dank day w/periods of light rain starting about 12:30pm & sporadic thru the rest of the day - never heavy, just a nice gentle rain, a soak-in type.

Thunder all day long, but little Lightning. After dark the Thunder, Lightning & Rains picked up again lasting into the early hours of Sun.
