12/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.38 3.5 0.38 3.5 0.38 Snow fell with varying intensity throughout most of the reporting period. Slightly over an inch fell between 0730 and noon; less than half an inch during the afternoon; over an inch between sunset and midnight; and the final half inch between midnight and sunrise. Tempertures were within a couple of degrees of freezing throughout the period, but there was considerable variation in snow stickiness. Initial snowfall was fairly powdery, and in late morning it was falling as tiny needles rather than hexagonal flakes. But by late afternoon it was becoming sticky enough to weight down evergreen branches, and that continued through the night. I missed an opportunity to photograph the gauge with a rim of snow an inch tall but only 1/8 inch wide.

1/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 T M T M Very light intermittent drizzle fell before noon, and very light intermittent snow during the afternoon - just enough to accumulate a near-continuous dusting on surfaces which had not retained enough heat to melt the snow. By observation time, most of that dusting was gone.
1/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.38 4.5 M 4.5 M Snow began falling very lightly about 6pm. By 10pm, nearly 2 inches had accumulated, and it was falling at a rate of over a half inch per hour. Almost 3 inches more fell by observation time, and it was was still coming down then. No wind, and no drifting, though visibly the snow was falling from a northerly direction. Very light and fluffy, easy to shovel, but also very sticky - piled on branches and larger twigs.

1/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 1.0 0.60 3.0 M Since the latest snow fell yesterday morning, it appears that some of it sublimated and then during the night condensed as freezing dew. What is visible this morning is (1) a very thin coating of uneven ice on some surfaces which were clear yesterday evening, (2) a much thinner layer of snow (on surfaces which were clear before yesterday's snowfall) than was evident immediately after that snowfall, and (3) ice on the inner wall of the precip gauge large tube, but not on the outer wall. The 1.0 inch of new snow depth was measured immediately after the snow stopped falling at midday. The 0.06 inch of water equivalent was measured at observation time this morning, and would probably have been greater if measured at the end of that snowfall.

2/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.55 0.0 M T M Intermittent drizzle or very light rain fell throughout the reporting period, sometimes freezing and sometimes not. It did not begin to accumulate significantly as ice until after sundown. At observation time, the maximum ice accumulation which could be found near this station was 0.1 inch, and most surfaces had less than that. A brief fall of sleet at the end of the period left icy surfaces well dusted with white, and improved walking traction considerably.
2/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.87 2.9 0.87 3.0 M Precipitation of various kinds was intermittent throughout the reporting period. Before noon, a bit of freezing drizzle added imperceptibly to the accumulated ice on ground and vegetation. Between noon and sundown, about 1.5" of sleety, very dense and granular snow fell; walking on it was like walking on wet sand, it was so incompressible. (This must be the reason for the astonishingly high water content measured.) In spite of light wind during the fall, it did not drift. During the night, an additional 1.5" fell - this much more fluffy, driftable, and compressible. The two types of snow are visibly different in the gauge. At observation time, a few small flakes could occasionally be seen falling leisurely down.
2/3/2011 7:00 AM T T M 2.0 M Isolated snow flakes fell sporadically beginning in the afternoon, accumulating sufficiently to be visible in the gauge and on some surfaces, but not enough to cover the bottom of the gauge or any other surface. A thin coating of ice remains on many branches and twigs from two days ago, sufficient to glitter in the early morning sun. The snowpack on the ground is primarily ice and the sleety snow which followed it, very densely settled.

2/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.18 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Precipitation fell as liquid during the night, then froze after skies cleared before sunrise. Thus there was ice in the gauge, but no ice on vegetation or similar surfaces.
2/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Rain fell some time between 10:30pm and sunrise; after the rain stopped, skies cleared and the temperature fell below freezing. Not only the water in the gauge froze, but also standing raindrops on smooth surfaces such as vehicles. There is no ice accumulation on vegetation or similar surfaces; pavements appear damp but are not icy underfoot. Elsewhere in the county, the situation is not so nice. News reports of interstate highway closures due to multi-vehicle pileups show that in other places the rain could not drain off the roads before it froze.

2/25/2011 7:00 AM 1.02 0.5 M 0.5 M Rain began yesterday morning, and was intermittent throughout the day and early evening. Sometime after 9pm it turned quickly to snow. But this morning, the only accumulation was on surfaces that cool rapidly (such as automobiles) or have low specific heat (such as vegetation, roofs and wooden or composite structures). Pavements of all kinds were just damp, or even dry. The accumulated rain in the gauge was NOT frozen, nor were the raindrops on the inner face of the large tube. But there was residual snow floating in the water, and snow accumulated on the rim and outside of the tube.

3/14/2011 7:20 AM 1.39 0.6 M 0.5 M Precip began as light rain, and presumably continued thus through the night, turning to snow an hour or more before observation time. The gauge contained 0.69" of liquid water plus a lump of slushy ice which did not touch the gauge walll - it must have been the result of snow falling into the gauge, and not from chilling of the liquid water which had accumulated there. Air temp at obs 33.4 degrees F, and snow continuing to fall.
3/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.67 1.0 M 0.5 M At the beginning of the period, soggy snow was falling lightly. It continued until mid-day, turning to rain and continuing until after nightfall. With heavy cloud cover all night, the air temperature at ground level never quite fell to freezing, so the gauge contents were entirely liquid at observation time. Very patchy snow cover varied from nothing to more than an inch, depending on the nature of the surface on which it had fallen.
3/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M There is no snow cover - only a few small lumps where piles of slush converted themselves to ice, thus slowing their melting.

2/9/2011 2/20/2011 1:00 PM 12 0.00 0.0 0.00 Gauge was left without funnel and inner tube during this period, because it was very cold when we departed. On return at the end of the period, it was found to be completely dry. Based on reports of other stations in this county during the period, it appears that there should have been a trace of rain on 2/10; if so, it all evaporated in the course of a week.

6/25/2011 7/06/2011 3:00 PM 12 5.21 0.0 0.00 From the dryness of foliage and pavements, it appears that there was no precipitation after 7am on 7/6/2011, and thus that could well be taken as the time the rain gauge was emptied.
