It has been very windy here all night. Snow on the hills significantly melted yesterday with many bare patches evident. Powder River was still snow-covered yesterday and the floodplain also. Melted water from snow is standing on the ground and not running off for the most part because of remaining snow cover and slush. |

Rain occurred around 8 pm according to neighbors. Roads were muddy last night because of it. Ice jam upstream continues to divert Powder River thru a lower pasture. Snow, ice, standing water, and bare ground all exist side by side in the rest of our ranch depending on elevation. Upland hills are most mostly bare of snow. |

Only a few ice patches remain in my garden and a few snowbanks on the hills in sheltered spots. It truly seems that spring has arrived. I put my funnel in the guage today, and will take it out if spring snow starts to fly. It is surprising how fast the melt has dried up although mud remains. |

Beautiful sunny day. I've been offline for a while and missed reporting almost 10 inches of rainfall in May, but now am back on. The Powder River is high but out of our pasture mostly. The fields are beginning to dry up but still have some standing water. The grass is knee-high to waist-high in many places and the mosquitos blossomed last night after 3 sunny days in a row. Most of the ranches have finished brandings and are putting cows out into summer range - if they can get thru the mud. Our area roads and creek bridges could use repair from the flood damages. |

Beautiful sunny day yesterday. Great for gardening. The cottonwood trees appear to be loosing their cotton - it's starting to get in everything. The grass in places is 3 to 5' tall. Everything is sooo green, though I have started to see small grasshopper flocks which is worrying after last year's infestation. |

We watched the lightning storm come slowly from the west. The green sheet lightning was incredible. Luckily a quick downpour came with the lightning so we didn't see any fires. The grass is very dry. It was over in a few minutes and moved east. Afterwards the sidewalk was wet and covered with the black cricket army that rules the nights here these days, and I checked the gauge, reading 0.04 in. |

A cool morning was followed by sunshine and beginnings of a breeze. I picked all our apples and crabapples even the green ones to save them from the bugs -- wasps, beetles, flies, and of course, grasshoppers. The lightning storm/wind squall came through around 6 p.m. with hard rain and lightning. It was soon over, but more rain (gentler)and lightning followed. I almost question the catch reading, because my daughter played outside after the first rain and came home soaked, but we didn't have many puddles, so maybe it's close. I think perhaps the wind was blowing the rain sideways. This morning's cloud cover kept everything cool. No dew though. |

Cold nights and blazing days. Nothing but dead flies in my gauge. I see my box elder tree has changed colors, a beautiful orange yellow. It is always the first of our trees on the ranch to turn and often loses its leaves before the rest especially the cottonwoods turn. I also noticed that the ash trees in the woody draws on the way to town had turned yellow. Fall is here. |
