What came across last night was some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen. The dog doesn't understand the concept of Daylight Savings Time, and I don't either. Nevertheless, I enjoy "falling back" and regaining my lost hour of sleep. The dog woofed to go out much earlier than I wanted, but I took her outside about 4:00 a.m. Skies were brilliantly clear and I readily saw Orion, the Big Dipper and star clusters. The air on the ground was still, yet the oak trees with all their fading leaves intact, were rustling from a constant 5-7 mph breeze. Dog and I went inside a short time later; the early morning break from a sound sleep was wonderful. No rain or frost to report and it looks to be dry for the next few days. |

NOAA radio sounded all afternoon. I watched the radar and monitored the storms, some with very high wind cores. However, as they traveled from the N/NW, they crossed over Lake James then split east and west of Glen Alpine. Lots of lightning, but we had little rain, only .08 inches. I've noticed this pattern many times. I prepared my newly planted tomatoes for hail. Fortunately, no hail. Quite the scare early this a.m. Weather radio went off at 2:30 a.m., I checked radar, and confirmed with local TV station. We grabbed the animals and huddled in our safe room for a while. Fortunately, we had only rain and lightning/thunder. No hail, or damage in our neighborhood at obs. The radar showed a tornado and one was spotted a few miles NE of our location. So much weather-related destruction the last month. Current temperature is still warm, 68F. Winds are light and skies are still cloudy. |

Work continues at the Lake James earthen dam near our house. The Catawba River isn't being released due to repairs on the dry side of the dam. The abundant spring rain has been great for the garden, but the lake may over top the dam. Wait and see kind of thing. On the other hand, we are still seeing effects of the last lengthy drought. One tree in our yard has finally given up the ghost and will have to be taken down. Others are heading for the same fate. |

Quite a ride last night and this morning. Three storms contributed to the total in the gauge. At 6:30pm we received .44. The winds and lightning were quite evident, and we had a nice crop of pea-size hail. Another storm came around 11:30 pm and put on a brilliant lightning show. Another short-lived storm arrived around 6:30 a.m. Didn't see the lightning, but we heard some good thunder. Small, healthy branches were blown off trees probably during the late-night storm. |

Wind gusts blew items from off my garden table, and one gust blew over an extension ladder propped against the house. The strongest measured gust was 12 mph. Winds were stronger than that, but I was afraid to go much farther than just outside the door. As the storm moved on past, a moth flew in from the darkness and settled near a porch light. Weather here is SOSO (same old, same old). I finally figured out a way to clean the inner gauge effectively and cheaply. I purchased mini paint rollers at a dollar store. Using only the 2.75" roller, I inserted a dowel in its center (dowel should fit snugly). Dowel was flush with the the end of the roller. Wrap the dowel with duct tape for easy gripping. The roller is a bit larger than the inner gauge, so you just squeeze and insert. Put a bit of water and gentle soap before you insert the roller. Snug fit makes for easy and effective cleaning. Someone else may have already thought of this, but it was new for me. |

Good soaking rain early evening (5:00ish) which netted a catch of more than half-an-inch. 72F this morning with a heavy dew everywhere. It's been a little difficult to work in the garden for the last several weeks - it's either too hot or too wet. Ragweed here is in full bloom and many are the sufferers therewith. |
