10/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M My computer, phone and tv weren't working properly yesterday morning so I couldn't submit my comments so I'll do that this morning. Since Sunday, we have had a total of 17.44 inches of rain. 8.16 inches fell in the 24 hour period ending at 7:00 yesterday morning. My neighborhood was flooded again as last year during the August thunderstorm that dropped 8.98 inches in less than 4 hours. This time, water was 2" lower and did not cover my front porch. At 11:30 Thursday night, I saw leeches, an eel, a small alligator snapping turtle and many fire ants swimming on my walkway, probably because of the porch light. It's inconvenient but my daughter and grandson are learning a lot about nature.
10/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M I spent the day yesterday cleaning up my yard.. The most unusual find was bunches of cherries. there are no cherry trees near me. Mother nature makes life interesting. Last Sunday, we were 11 inches below normal in rainfall. Today we are 7 inches above.

4/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.41 M M M M My anemometer recorded a wind speed of 71 MPH during yesterdays storm but it is the only equipment I have that is not official so I am having less confidence in its' accuracy. However, there were garbage cans and outdoor furniture scattered in yards. The wind sounded like a Hurricane in my brick home.

4/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.52 M M M M A heavy drizzle is still falling this morning. There was cloud to cloud lighting, heavy rain but no hail. The rain started around 9:30 PM after moving across the state from west to east.

4/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.27 M M M M What a day! We are very lucky as a tornado crossed Highway 70 to our north and missed our town. We lost power for a while after dark and that made us even more nervous. Our highest wind gusts were 40 to 50 MPH which occurred in the early afternoon. Most of us should be thankful this morning as we drink our coffee and see the destruction on TV in our homes that are still intact.

4/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M A band of dissipating showers moved through yesterday afternoon around 4:00. After 6 months of heavy rain and winter snow, we are getting into a drought situation.

4/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 77 degrees yesterday. South winds were blowing off the ocean which has 66 degree water temperatures.
4/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M A thunderstorm hit just as I took my reading and emptied my rain gauge. My shirt got wet running back to the house.
4/27/2011 7:00 AM 1.10 M M M M Wonderful spring rain fell off and on the last 24 hours with heavy rain after midnight. The ducks are happy since all the ditches are full and they can swim up and down their "duck highway."
4/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M What a day! Words can't express the sorrow I feel for victims of the tornadoes.
4/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.97 M M M M A thunderstorm with twisting wind, heavy rain and lots of cloud to ground lightning moved through yesterday evening. Our power flickered off and on but no damage was noted.

5/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Unusual pattern: rain and thunderstorms are moving from NW to SW in the southwestern one half of the state while the northeastern one half is dry with low humidity.

5/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
5/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M From 12:30 until 4:30 this morning, lightning kept my bedroom lighted up but it was mostly cloud to cloud lightning with some heavy thunder. With only .12 inches of rain, there was more electricity than rain in the thunderstorm except in Onslow County.
5/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was sprinkling at 7:00 this morning, but heavier rain was falling to my S and SE,mostly in Carteret County. There is lightning associated with this band of rain and as I finish writing this report, moderate rain has started falling as we are on the NW fringe of the rain.
5/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M It rained enough to wet the pavement yesterday morning. The ducks got all excited for nothing. The ditches (the ducks hiway) have been dry for weeks.
5/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M The upper level low has been pulling dry air over us so we are missing out on the rain.
5/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Light rain is falling just NW of us with a drop or two falling here as the pocket of dry air still controls our weather.
5/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M So far this has been the driest May that I can remember with .34 inches so far. I'm having to water my flowers and garden plants .

5/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sea breeze showers fell to the north and south of us yesterday afternoon and evening. We did get a few drops but not enough to measure.
5/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterdays' high temperature was 88 degrees but made bearable by 38% humidity. No more lawn mowing for me until sufficient rain falls.

5/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our proximity to the ocean kept us 10 degrees cooler than our neighbors to the west. The high yesterday was 87 degrees.
5/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 89 degrees yesterday. Still, my station has not made it to 90 degrees this year. I was in New Bern yesterday and the grass up there is brown. It reminded me of December. That town needs rain soon!

5/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M It rained a whopping .02 inches last night but we will take and appreciate every drop.

5/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Grass is turning brown. If no rain falls in the next two days, this would be the driest May I can remember
5/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We have had .36 inches of rain so far in May with one day to go. In 1968, the driest year I can remember with extreme drought, we did not have that small amount of rain in any month in Montgomery County. Wells, creeks, ponds and rivers dried up and farmers hauled water for miles from remaining water holes and springs to keep lifestock alive. I'll never forget that year, walking the dry creek beds, seeing racoons eating the starving fish. Temps were in the 90s most of the summer and so dusty untill a tropical storm dumped several inches of rain on us.What a wonderful sight it was to see 2 days of heavy rains that brought the water holes, streams and creeks back to normal.
6/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cherry Point MCAS recorded a high temperature of 100 yesterday, while my weather station reached only 95 but that's hot enough for me. I can't remember a drier May.
6/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This has got to be the year of the tornado. It proves they can hit just about anywhere. Our Nation has had record floods, tornadoes, rain and snow this year and we had .36 inches of rain during the month of may which is a record for the least amount at my station. Tornadoes just missed our city but my heart goes out to Mass. and all the other states hit by these terrible storms.
6/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
6/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M In the past 36 days, we have recorded .36 inches of rain or an average of .01 inches per day. I have placed a wading pool with water for the ducks in my yard because the ditches are bone dry. When the temperature reaches 90 or higher, the streets get so hot it burns the bottom of the ducks feet so they stay under shade trees during the heat of the day. We have a good chance for rain today so you can bet I'll be looking up at the clouds.
6/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Very smokey, my eyes burn when I go outside. Makes this drought even more unbearable.
6/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
6/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M My lawn has turned brown just like the middle of January. There has been no beneficial rainfall in 39 days, only .37 of an inch total. The most we've had at one time was .12.
6/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Still extremely dry. Fire danger exists everywhere. Even lawns are bone dry, especially mine. We are now 40 days without beneficial rain. Only .37 inches in 40 days is something I can't remember in my lifetime.

6/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 44 days,.37 inches of rain. Is this coastal NC or Arizona? The rain dosen't fall here and my neighborhood is like a desert. It will rain. It always does but I have never seen a dry spell like this.
6/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The thunderstorms yesterday afternoon moved close enough to see rain fall from the clouds as they practically surrounded us but we only recieved a sprinkle. For the 14 days of June, we have had .01 inches. The most we have had was .12 inches on the 14th of May.As I have said before, I can't remember 45 days with only .37 inches of rain and it does compare to Arizonas' weather.
6/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 46 days with no beneficial rainfall. The grass in the median on Main Street is as brown as it is in January. Where there is no irrigation, green is turning brown fast. We had a severe drought last summer but the 17.42 inches of rain that fell the 21/2 days tropical storm Nicole moved through ended that drought.
6/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M All the rain moved through South Carolina last night, which is good for them, but it adds up to 47 days with out beneficial rain for us. In my 71 years, I've never seen so little rainfall in such a long period of time in North Carolina. During the last 4 years, I have seen an unblieveable varity of weather here on the coast with some records broken.
6/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M NO PRECIPITATION!
6/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.31 0.0 M M M A gusty thunderstorm moved through yesterday afternoon. In the past 48 days, I measured a total of .37 hundreds of an inch of rain. From 12:35 to 12:50, we recieved .31 hundreds. It was great to see lightning and hear loud claps of thunder and to see the rain blowing along the ground in sheets. We need 12 more inches to get us back to normal for this date but thank God for the rain we recieved.
6/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
6/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.96 M M M M A shower yesterday afternoon left us with .11 inches of rain. Last night beginning at 2:00 a thunderstorm with strong winds and heavy rain left leaves and limbs in my yard and .80 inches in my gauge.
6/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M In may, we had a total of .37 hundreds inches if rain . Including the weekend storms (Sunday thru Monday morning), we've had 1.28 inches for the month of June, a total of 1.64 inches of rain in 52 days. The grass has turned green again but the drought is still with us.
6/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain, no standing water yet in my neighborhood.
6/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We suffered through dense smoke from the Pender County forest fire yesterday along with ash falling from the sky like snow flurries. My eyes are still burning this morning. In the last 4 years, I've seen everything except a full fledged Hurrican.
6/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.54 M M M M Two thunderstorms moved through yesterday afternoon and evening. The first, just before dark, again left us with limbs and leaves in our yard. The second had cloud to cloud lightning and light to moderate rain. In spite of recent rain, there is no water in the ditches and I have supplied water in a wading pool for the ducks.
6/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Beautiful morning although I smell smoke from the Pender County forest fire.
6/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It appears a "sea breeze" thunderstorm is our only hope for rain the next few days.
6/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thunderheads are visible out over the gulf stream where thunderstorms developed overnight.
6/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.19 M M M M A light to moderate rain fell for two hours yesterday afternoon. It was leftover rain from heavy thunderstorms that developed to our west and north. We are nearly 11 inches behind in rainfall so far this year so we'll take what we get and be thankful.
6/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M If rain could fall from dark layers of smoke, we could have had a downpour last evening. The grass is still brown in places in my front yard. We are in a serious drought in spite of recent rainfall.
6/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We received no rain yesterday but I heard thunder practically all day. Smoke is thick this morning and will make your eyes water and your lungs burn.
7/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I recorded a total of 2.02 inches of rain for the month of June. For the first six months of 2011, we have received 16.61 inches of precipitation which is 10.5 below normal. May, with .36 inches recorded, was the driest month I can remember.
7/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M A very slow moving "sea breeze" thunder shower developed over Havelock yesterday afternoon with .09 inches falling before the cloud rained out. As I have said before, every drop of rain helps during a severe drought.
7/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Eye watering smoke from the Pender County forest fire covers our area this morning.
7/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a smokey, hot, miserable day until a SE wind blew the smoke to the west of us and it is so dry that any part of my yard would burn if set on fire.
7/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy, hot and humid. A typical summer morning except for severe drought. I remember October of last year when we received more than 17 inches of rain in 3 days. I was standing in my yard with water above my ankles where now there is nothing but dried up grass.
7/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M We had 2 hours of very light rain last evening. The grass is still brown but the rain cooled the atmosphere and dispersed the smoke and the awful smell.
7/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavy thunderstorms are occurring over the ocean, some as close as the beaches. They are moving N-NE and will not affect us.
7/8/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M At 2:00 this morning, I could see lightning flashing to our S and SE. We have only received a trace of rain at 7:00 but more appears to be on the way. I observed a beautiful rainbow in the SW which is the direction our clouds are coming from.
7/9/2011 7:00 AM 1.61 M M M M 1.61 INCHES. Wonderful rain. Most of it was absorbed by the black sand and some did remain in the ditches, but not enough for the ducks to swim. 20 ducks gathered in my front yard yesterday during a heavy shower and enjoyed the rain. Of course the rain runs off their backs.
7/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M The grass is greener, the air is drier, after yesterdays rain, it just feels great outside this morning.
7/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M My station recorded a high of 95 yesterday but the humidity was low.
7/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterdays' high was 93, the temp this morning is 77. Going to be a hot one today.
7/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 94 was our high yesterday, 81 has been our low this morning. At one time yesterday afternoon, our heat index was 113 with some smoke, making it almost impossible for me to go outside.
7/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M The heat index yesterday was the highest I have ever recorded, 122 degrees. The outside temp was 98 degrees at the time which is unusual this close to the ocean.
7/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M In 2 1/2 months, we have received 4.24 inches of rain. Normally, we receive that amount each month. I have only mowed my grass two times this season. It will rain and we probably will complain about the weather being too wet.
7/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 65 was our low with no wind and no smoke. Beautiful morning.
7/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
7/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our high yesterday was 91. There were no "sea breeze" showers in sight.
7/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 93 yesterday with low humidity made it somewhat bearable outside. That probably will not be the case today.
7/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M yesterdays high was 94, low this morning 78. The mallard ducks here in Havelock do not migrate so they find relief under thick trees and wading pools such as the one I have under a shade tree in my front yard. Some of them have burned their feet so now they have learned to stay off the street until late afternoon.
7/21/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M A "sea breeze" thunderstorm developed just to the north and northwest of us yesterday afternoon. It was moving so slow that it rained out just before it got to my house. We did get a cooling trace of rain.
7/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M With temps in the middle to upper 90s, no rainfall and a bone dry lawn, I should plant about a dozen cactus trees in my yard and we would be Arizona.
7/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Three afternoons in a row, "sea breeze" thunderstorms have developed to the N and NW us but have basically rained out where they form. It's 81 degrees this morning and I expect a higher heat index today than yesterdays 118.
7/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sea breeze thunderstorm developed to our N and NW yesterday afternoon and of course rained out before it got to my house. That's 4 days in a row.
7/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We are extremely dry. Most grass in my yard is cured just like hay in a field.
7/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not a drop of rain fell here. Another heat wave without rain will take its toll on my shubbery.
7/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Again it missed a good chance to rain. We received only two light showers which produced .05 of an inch of rain.
7/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M It missed a good chance to rain again this morning. It only wet the pavement.
7/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We are extremely dry and hot but our drought is not as bad as in the state of Texas. That state can,t get a tropical storm to move through to ease the situation. Our high was 95 yesterday with a heat index of 118.
7/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 99 degrees yeasterday with a heat index of 120 and still very, very dry.
7/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.95 M M M M After seeing many sea breeze thunderstorms in eastern NC the past several days, we finally got one yesterday. It developed over southern Havelock at 2:30 while the temp was 102 degrees. There was cloud to ground lightning, heavy rain and wind gusts of 52 MPH. By the time the cloud rained out, we had received .95 inches of rain and the temp had dropped to 77 degrees.
8/1/2011 7:00 AM 1.04 M M M M The rain arrived late yesterday afternoon and the black sand consumed every drop. There was cloud to cloud lightning, nothing severe.
8/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M A sea breeze thunderstorm developed over Havelock late yesterday afternoon with cloud to cloud lightning and a moderate rain shower.

8/5/2011 7:00 AM 1.66 M M M M At 7:00 yesterday afternoon, my computer indicated heavy rain falling over Cherry Point. I walked out in back yard and could see the rain 1/4 mile away, moving toward us. It rained 1.66 inches in 45 munutes. There was cloud to ground lightning and the ditches were full of water which made the ducks very happy.
8/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Light showers fell during the night.
8/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Light showers during the night. Heavy showers moved to the north of us yesterday.

8/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 96 yesterday. A sea breeze thunderstorm moved south of us yesterday afternoon. I could hear heavy thunder.
8/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, dry, smokey but cooler this morning. As of yesterday, we were 10.98 inches below normal in rainfall for 2011.

8/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I've got to start tying things down, anything that I can't get into the garage, starting today. Being 13 + inches behind in rainfall, I knew it would take a Hurrican to break the drought.

8/28/2011 7:00 AM M M M M M Sorry I'm late. I had to borrow a lap top. We have been without power since Saturday morning at 1:30. We took a beating with 24 hours of strong winds and heavy blinding rain. We had a wind gust of 83 MPH and several between 75 and 78 MPH. My home sustained no damage but many in my neighborhood did. (edit: daily precip initially recorded as 11.10". MDR will be recorded as this report is deleted. P.G.)
8/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our power came back on yesterday around lunch time. When we lived in Montgomery County, Hurrican Hazel and Hurrican Fran did more damage, but Irene was the longest in duration. Standing on my front porch during the heigth of the storm , I neard a sound like several jet planes up in the clouds in between wind gusts. I can't say that the total of 11.10 inches was correct for our total rainfall with so many Hurrican force wind gusts, but I have to accept it.

9/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Still cleaning up my yard. No damage to my house but the 83 MPH wind gust did a number on my sattilight dish in the yard. It has been back to the good old days just listening to the radio.
