10/1/2010 7:00 AM 5.28 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 I was about to call the 4.75-7 inch forecast a bust before 2.65" between 1:45 and 4:00 AM. Event total exactly 6.00" for 26 hours between 5 AM yesterday and 7 AM today. Spruce Run in Glen Gardner and Mulhockaway Creek (feeders for Spruce Run Reservoir) both above flood stage. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge below flood stage now (7 AM), but I suspect it will flood as the upper basin drains. Light rain, 59.4F, 96% RH at 7 AM. Calendar month (through 1 AM EDT) for September 5.60"; total for October already 3.53" !!!! PS, SS-7 Nice to see you back :) Highest daily precip since Floyd in 1999 IIRC.
10/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.29 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Light rain showers continued off and on through 3 PM. 34 hr total (5 AM 9/30- 3 PM 10/1; CocoRaHS days 9/30-10/2) 6.29". For NJ CoCoRaHS stations High 7.34" Warren Cty, Low 0.54" Cape May Cty. For both storms (9/27-10/2) 8.36", 1.55", same counties. South Branch Raritan flooded above and below High Bridge, technically not at the HB Gage; however 2 lowest roads downstream did close for a few hours. Also had an unfunneled gauge 2 feet away, it measured 6.26" (0.5% difference).

10/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.56 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Damp cool and rainy. 2 day event total 0.64". With no sun, and 24 hours around 50 degrees, finally had to start the first small fire in the woodstove last evening just to get the chill out. Haven't touched the heat yet, though. Lots of green tomatos on the plants in the garden which I fear will never ripen, so I'm working on green tomato recipes!
10/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.24 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly drizzle during the day, then a period of light rain in the late afternoon/evening. 0.24" before 1 AM, only a trace afterward. 3 day event total 0.88". Once again needed a small fire in the woodstove to take the chill out.
10/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 4 day event total 0.90". Since Sept 27, statewide precip has ranged from ~3.25" to almost 10".

11/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Interesting morning; just before 6 AM went out for a look. Thin cirrus overhead, heavy dew (hmmm, guess that makes my house a "dewed" ranch), thickest fog I've seen here in years (vis < 1/4 mile), yet the setting nearly full moon was visible a quarter million miles away in the west, and rising Venus blazing in the east southeast 67 million miles away. Gauge (as well as everything else) was dripping with dew.

Interesting wildlife note; my marmorated stink bug drowning pool keeps getting emptied. Caught the culprit (bless it's feathered little heart), a Carolina Wren. I'll now keep an eye out to see if I can see it taking one live. Unfortunately, I've only seen one at a time in 3 years, unlike the Juncos, Blue Jays, and Mourning Doves.

12/26/2010 7:00 AM T T T 0.0 0.00 Snirga when I left the house before noon, very very very light snow when I got home at 9 PM. Yesterday colder, low 22.6, high 34.0, avg 28.3 F. Now 12 days since there was any substantial precip in NJ. (Edit-- First Flakes of the big storm at 11:30 AM 12/26)
12/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.45 4.2 0.45 4.0 0.45 More wind then snow. All 8 tiny reindeer on the lawn blew down overnight; from a south wind! (Probably a roll wind from ridge to north). Before midnight, 4.0", 0.44", good measurement without too much wind. Very little after, and very hard to get an accurate reading by morning due to severe drifting. Rates never over 0.6" per hour.
12/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.5 0.53 Edited after SWE core melt. Core melt today higher than yesterday's storm total; uneven snow transfer and desification I suspect. Another very cold and very windy day, not a new flake all day. A bit of melting where asphalt was exposed in the driveway. Temp 19.4/28.0 = avg 23.7; 15th consecutive day with average below freezing.
12/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.0 0.53 Slow compression of snowpack, melting only around the edges and in areas blown clear earlier. SWE measurement on snowboard (which matched average snow depth) was identical to yesterday. 22.8/36.3 = 29.6 avg.
12/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.5 0.50 Top layer of snow was wet yesterday, hard layer this morning. From morning low of 26.1 rose to 39.9 ("Missed it by that much") but dropped under clear skies to 21.6 by midnight; avg 30.8 F. More bare patches, but coverage still >50%. Golf course 2 blocks away, which was blown clear almost snow free. Wouldn't be surprised to see some duffers out there today.
12/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 1.5 0.25 Yesterday partly sunny low 16.5, high 40.3 (first high > 40 since Dec 13), avg 28.4 (18th and final consecutive day with average below freezing). Still > 50% snow coverage, but added a zero into 5 site transect average. 26.4F mostly clear at 7 AM. Dec precip 3.61". Dec snow 4.2", plus 11 days with a trace. Seasonal snow 4.7" (2 events), first measurable 11/26; plus 13 Trace days, first trace Nov 9. Had to move from my snowboard for SWE as it has more than average depth.
1/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 1.5 0.34 Slow melt continues. Over 14 hours above freezing! 26.2/46.0 = 36.1 avg. Happy New Year all you CoCoRaisins!
1/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 T T Light shower just after midnight, dense fog and drizzle early morning, and a heavier shower at obs time. Rain didn't participate in snowmelt, but temps munched much of what was left. AM low yesterday of 29.7 was above freezing by 8:15 AM and hasn't been below since. Afternoon high 50.9, average 40.3, all 3 readings highest since rainstorm of the 12th. Much less than 50% snow coverage, so will be reporting T on ground till it's all gone. Highest natural drift 2".
1/3/2011 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 T T A few sprinkles throughout the day just wet the ground. Nearly 40 hours above freezing put a hurtin' on the snow, only a few small natural patches in sheltered/shady spots. 29.5 low as temps dropped off at midnight, morning low a balmy 43.3, afternoon high 48.4. Average 39.0 F.

1/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.7 0.04 0.5 0.04 A few flakes by 3:30 AM, light coating on ground by 5 AM. Yesterday Low 18.3/High 33.3 = Avg 25.8 F. Had to go get birdseed or I would have run out today...can't do that during snow or during a wood run would have come in with a chickadee in each ear, two Tufted Titmice banging on my head, and a Blue Jay pecking my eyes out! 25.9 F and 69% RH at 7 AM with light/moderate snow.
1/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.14 1.3 0.14 1.5 0.18 Snow event total 2.0" (exact), 0.18" liquid, all between 3:30 AM and 12:30 PM on Jan 7. Morning low 24.8, high just after snow ended 34.5, dropped to 14.7 at midnight. Average, a chilly 24.6 F. Got up this morning to a mob of 13 Mourning Doves working the snow and seeds on the back porch :). Snow compressed a little by this morning, but same water content.
1/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 1.7 0.10 3.0 M Snowed from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM with a flurry around 8 PM. Yestraday's low of 12.9 was coldest of season, combined with high of only 27.5 was cold average 20.2 F, continuing our much below normal winter.
1/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.0 0.25 Yesterday mostly sunny, 21.2/31.1 = 26.2 avg. Some blowing of snow occurred as wind moved the light fluffy snow, but no general change in depth; even asphalt driveway did not completely melt the dusting of snow that remained on it. I pre heated my coffee can to drill through any ice layer beneath, but it turned out not to be needed as my "total snow" board was ice free at the bottom.
1/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.5 0.29 Made it above freezing yesterday (33.3) with a morning low of 18.7 = avg 26.0 F. A little melting, but little compression of snowpack. Took a SWE reading this morning before tonight's storm, came in just a bit higher on adjacent patch, just random variation. Cleaning up remnants from last storm in preparation.
1/12/2011 6:00 AM 0.45 7.7 0.45 9.5 0.67 Accumulating snow from 6:50 PM to 3:30 AM. Another 0.1" in flurries and showers since. Have to report early, I need some sleep after being up all night. Some settling and drifting reduced total snow depth from 10.0 to 9.5" between 4 and 6 AM. Venus visible in the east at 5 AM, so it was clear in that direction then, but not at 6 AM. 3.8" snow before midnight, 3.9" after. VERY fluffy snow, 17:1 snow/liq ratio. Catch in gauge (0.25 before midnight and 0.19 after = 0.44) and snow board total at 4 AM (0.45) were within .01" pretty good! Little wind made gauge catch accurate.
1/13/2011 7:00 AM T T T 8.0 M Light flurries off and on all day, snow shower 1:30-2 PM. Low 17.8 High 32.0, avg 24.9 F. Snow settled, but did not melt!
1/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 0.59 Brrr, Yesterday's high 27.3, dropped to 10.0 by midnight, average 18.7; both min and avg lowest of season, as was this morning's low of 8.8 F. Snow settled another inch.
1/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 M Yesterday's low 8.8 lowest of the season, high 31.5, avg 20.2; 11th in a row avg below freezing. Snow compressed another inch.
1/16/2011 7:00 AM T T T 5.5 M Not a bad day yesterday. After morning low of 10.8, afternoon high of 36.1 was highest in over a week. Avg 23.5 F. A few snowflakes just after 3 PM, that was it. Temp didn't start to drop off until after 3 AM when clouds partially cleared.
1/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 5.5 0.59 34.0 overnight high; 34.5 afternoon high. 25.0 morning low, 21.4 midnight low. Average 28.0 F. Be careful folks. Freezing rain will last much longer than Mt Holly warnings due to 11 day average temp here in High Bridge of 21.9. Despite my warnings to NWS, they only forecast freezing rain when air temps are below freezing (applicable to trees and power lines), wheras huge thermal mass of ground temps causes ice to form on sidewalks, driveways, and road surfaces much longer. Conducting experiments at 7 AM, will report results; in 10 minutes, 1 cup of 50 degree tap water froze solid on concrete sidewalk, asphalt driveway, and heavily salted road surface. 7 AM temp 19.0 F.
1/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.34 1.3 0.34 6.0 0.93 Really needed the coffee can and metal yardstick today. Snow from 10:30 PM to 2:30 AM (peak snow depth), snow/sleet by 3, snow/sleet/ZR by 4, all freezing rain by 5. New snow/sleet/rain compressed to 0.8" by 7 AM. 0.4" snow, 0.05" precip before midnight. Will update the SWE and precip as they melt since gauge was coated with ice, and crunchy bits for cores. 30.6 F, light freezing rain at 7 AM. Overnight low (~ 2 AM) 23.2 F. Yesterday 18.5/27.9 = 23.2 avg. Identical readings from gauge and core for current event.
1/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.46 0.0 0.00 4.5 0.85 Temp went above freezing (from post midnight low of 23.2) by 8 AM yesterday, so "air" freezing ended then, ground freezing continued till about 11 AM. Afternoon high 37.0; 30.1 average. First event (10 PM Monday to 6 PM Tuesday) 0.77", new light rain started after 5 AM; 0.03". Had to find a new spot for SWE, saving remaining sites on ("total" snowboard for SWE Mondays. Based on this weekends temp forecast, will need power equipment to get through the top ice layer.
1/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 T T 3.5 M Light rain in the morning, a few afternoon sprinkles, and a light snow shower around 4 AM. Yesterday's low 33.3, high 43.3, avg 38.3. Avg broke string of 15 straight below freezing; first low above freezing since Dec 12th. I measured total snow depth, but not sure I can penetrate rock hard ice layer for a core. 7 AM conditions, mostly clear, 30.9 F, 49% rh.
1/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.39 4.2 0.39 7.5 0.98 Snow from 12:40 AM (29.7F) to 6:10 AM (28.8F). Afternoon and 19/20 midnight high 34.0, morning low 28.4, evening low 27.9; average 31.0 F. At 7 AM, Full moon setting in the west, Venus blazing high in the east under mostly clear skies, 27.0 F, 80% RH. With little wind, gauge catch (0.39") and core (0.385") agreed within 0.01"; used gauge reading. Gauge 10.8:1, core 10.9:1 ratios.
1/22/2011 7:00 AM T T T 6.5 M Yesterday's afternoon high was 33.3 with a few flurries, by midnight it has fallen to 14.3 giving a 23.8 average. This morning's low of 6.1 is the coldest of the season. The path to the woodpile was obliterated by the drifting snow.
1/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 M Frigid day yesterday; morning low 6.1, average 14.8, both lowest of the season. Afternoon "high" 23.5 was 1 degree above the previous low high. Will save the blasting and construction equipment for total SWE for tomorrow morning. This morning's low ~ 4:30 AM was 3.2 F, also lowest of the season. Warmed up fairly rapidly afterward to 9.7 by 7 AM. My location is about 400', below the peak at the NJAA observatory (~805') and Rt 31 down below (~300'), so cold air does not pool here, it drains.
1/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 0.93 More lowest of season yesterday...AM low 3.2, average 13.8. High of 24.3 was actually higher than the day before. Today will hopefully be the coldest day of the winter; 0.5 F at 7 AM and still falling. After donning Moon Spacesuit, and heating ice penetration equipment, was able to get SWE. 2/5 Total SWE corrected.
1/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 0.01 6.0 M Hopefully, yesterday was the nadir of winter. Low 0.0, High 21.9, Average 11.0 all lowest of the season. Between midnight and 4 AM, interesting snow shower, tiny (<1 mm) graupel bounced off tilted surfaces collecting at bottom of windshield and in front of vehicles. Then about 6 AM, light snow started, continuing at 7 AM, 20.3 F. I'm not going to attempt SWE today, will try and give it a shot early tomorrow AM before the next event, could barely even get the thin metal yardstick through all the layers to measure total snow depth.
1/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.5 0.03 6.5 1.21 Flurries continued after obs time yesterday depositing a trace, light snow started about 6 AM this morning. Heat wave yesterday broke string of the 3 coldest days of the season 16.5 low, 36.1 high, 26.3 average. Managed to get a clean Total snow core this morning with red hot coffee can, had to move to a new area with representative 6.5" depth, higher content than the previous location with the same depth. 2/5 Total SWE corrected.
1/27/2011 7:00 AM 1.25 11.0 1.25 16.5 M 2.6" snow 6-9 AM (0.5" reported yesterday), a trace 9A-4P, 2 hrs drizzle, then 8.9" 6 PM to 1 AM. By 2 AM snow was settling faster than it was falling, and ended by 2:30. 4.6" between 8 and 10 PM. Peak new snow depth (11.5", exact to nearest 0.1)at 1 AM, down 1/2 inch by 2 AM, down another 1/2 by 7 AM (10.5"). New SWE is from gauge catch (Sum of 12 N, 9PM, Midn, 3AM), new snow core from board was 0.05" less, but had trouble separating ice on snowboard surface, so gauge total is probably more accurate. I'll attempt a total snow SWE later.
1/28/2011 7:00 AM T T T 15.0 1.91 Few morning flurries yesterday 24.3 low (at 27/28 midnight), 38.1 high, 31.2 average.
1/29/2011 7:00 AM T T T 14.0 M A coating of snow in the morning and evening; during the day, snow melted on contact. SWE < 0.005, so just a trace. 21.6 low, 36.1 high, 28.9 avearge.
1/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.07 0.9 0.07 13.5 M Flurry 1:45 PM, steady snow began 2:15 PM and continued till about 7:30. Low 22.1, 36.5 high, 29.3 average, just about "normal".
1/31/2011 7:00 AM T T T 12.0 2.00 Project FeederWatch helped me see VERY light flurries 2-3 PM. 20.3 low, 38.1 high (finally de-iced the sidewalk!), 29.2 average. If anyone is running climateprediction.net, there is now a CoCoRaHS team you can join! Just in case, preparing for an extended period without power Wednesday; NWS forecast is for up to 0.5" ice accumulation on trees and wires. That means filling any empty space in fridge and freezers with bottles 3/4 full of water (to allow for water -> ice expansion), and lowering fridge temp 2 degrees to 37 F to extend period when food will stay safe before firing up the generator. 1/2" crust atop snow, 1 1/2" icy layer at bottom, all fluff between. Edited Total SWE for proper multiplier; 2.00 inches is exact.
2/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 0.3 0.09 12.0 2.01 First, yesterday 12.9 low, 35.1 high, 24.0 average. Mixed snow and graupel started just before midnight; left a trace. Gradually changed to all snow and became very light by 3 AM. between then and 7 AM changed to light freezing drizzle and rain at 7 AM. Melted is combined snow, sleet, and ZR; gauge and core matched.
2/2/2011 7:30 AM 0.78 0.4 M 11.5 M Yesterday afternoon light freezing drizzle high 30.4, morning low 23.5, 27.0 average. Sleet and freezing rain began about midnight, became all sleet, moderate at times. About 3 AM, freezing rain began to mix in, change complete by 5 AM. Just hit 32.0 at 7:30 AM obs time. New snow is actually all sleet, could not separate liquid from rain so left that as NA. 3/8 inch diameter ice accretion on wires and branches. (Actual measurement with micrometer 12.5mm - 3mm twig =9.5 mm =0.374")
2/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.11 T T 11.0 2.23 Morning low 27.0 during freezing rain. Freezing rain changed to rain 7:30 AM (yesterday's report), rain ended about 11 AM. Afternoon high 37.2 melted all the ice off trees by 3 PM or so, 32.1 average above freezing for the first time in a week. Light snow flurry about 4 AM. 2 day event total 0.98" Quite a challenge to get through the 1/2" of rock hard ice at the top for total SWE!!
2/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 10.5 M From yesterday's high of 34.0, fell to 16.6 by midnight for a 25.3 average. What a difference the higher sun angle of the first week of February makes when trying to melt this hydrological concrete! Now that smoke has cleared January precip total 3.35" with measurable precip on 13 days and a trace on 7 more; largest 1.25". As for snow, 29.5" measurable on 10, trace on 7 more, largest daily total 11.0", event 11.5". Had to use a chisel to get through the top layer to measure total snow depth.
2/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.1 0.01 10.5 M Not much melting yesterday as clouds reduced insolation and it only rose from morning low of 10.8 to 32.7 for a chilly 21.8 average. Light snow began this morning about 5:30; by 6:30 freezing drizzle which continues. Note to SS-7 and others who use coffee cans for penetrating ice layers for SWE. I measured mine with a precision micrometer and interior diameter was only 3 15/16". This means measured liquid should be multiplied by 1.032 for true reading. Will not attempt total SWE again till Monday morning; it's just too difficult and dangerous to get to the measuring area under these icy conditions. 25.5 at 7 AM.
2/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.20 0.0 0.00 9.5 M Some melting despite the all day clouds and rain. Temp 19.8/36.7 = 28.3 F. Did not fall below freezing overnight! Event total 0.22"
2/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.0 2.42 A good melting day with some sun. Morning low (Yesterday) 34.5, afternoon high 43.3 (!), only fell to 28.8 before midnight, 36.1 average. Snowpack did not shrink, but texture has changed; before it was ice at top and bottom with very light fluff between. After yesterday fluff layer is now much more dense, entire 9" core came out in one plug, great for snowballs. Overall 0.27" liquid per inch of snow/ice (3.7:1 ratio)
2/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.17 0.0 0.00 8.0 2.76 If anyone is running the BOINC project climateprediction.net, there's now a CoCoRaHS team you can join. Light rain in the evening, and again this early morning. Temp range 2/7: 28.6/46.0 = 37.3 avg. Decided to take SWE measurement today before this stuff hardens. The bottom 1 1/2 is completely saturated. 36.0 F, 94% RH at 7 AM.
2/9/2011 7:00 AM T T T 7.5 M Yesterday flurries around noon and in late afternoon, 36.5 morning high, then wind picked up and temp fell to 15.5 by midnight, 26.0 avg. Did not attempt Total snow SWE today; perhaps over the weekend.
2/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.5 M Brrr. Yesterday 9.5/30.6 = 20.1 avg. Melting on asphalt surfaces with some filtered sun, but none on the icepack.
2/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.5 M Melting only on asphalt surfaces. Morning low 18.7, high only 28.2, midnight low 15.0 = 21.6 average. Looking forward to the thaw; getting wood from the woodpile is treacherous!
2/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 7.0 M Strange brown-green color has appeared in a small patch in my backyard. I'll try and investigate later. Yesterday 7.7/37.0 = 22.4 average. Finished the February woodpile, now working on the March one :(
2/13/2011 7:00 AM T T T 6.5 M Brief flurry between 11:30 AM and noon caused panic at the feeder leading to a high of 37 Juncos (well that's the most I could count before one twitched and they scattered). Variable clouds all day, temp range 17.8/40.6 = 29.2 average.
2/14/2011 7:00 AM T T T 6.5 1.92 A few light morning flurries yesterday; 20.1/44.2 = 32.2 average. Temp has been rising from midnight low under clear skies of 35.4 to 39.9 and cloudy at 7 AM with slushy standing water on the sidewalk. Despite warm day, not much change in snowpack height, but it's not solid ice! 3.4:1 ratio in snowpack.
2/15/2011 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 4.0 1.53 Wow, yesterday really put a dent in the snowpack! First time below 6" since Jan 21. Low 35.4, high 56.3, average 45.9; all the highest since 12/12/2010. A few raindrops around 9 PM. I may try a SWE plug, but will have to preheat the can to get through the bottom layer for sure. (Edit, I was successful; 2.6:1 ratio) Had to laugh SS-7, sweeping the water off the sidewalk is the technique I use as well. The low humidity and wind did the rest, it's almost dry before today's roof drainage begins.
2/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 4.0 1.52 Not bad for a cold, sunny day, but no melting of snowpack. Morning low 23.5, midnight low 23.0 with afternoon high of 36.1 = 29.6 average. 2.6:1 snow/liquid ratio. Partly cloudy, 21.9 at 7 AM.
2/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.5 1.49 Very nice snowmelt, South Branch Raritan at High Bridge remains below 25th percentile for the date. Yesterday 19.9/46.6 = 33.3 average. Great Backyard Bird Count starts tomorrow, see http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc for details on how to participate. 2.3:1 snow/liquid ratio. Puddles on the sidewalk since 7 AM temp is 37.6 under cloudy skies. (Edit- 60 degrees at 2:12 PM!!!! Woo-Hoo!)
2/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 1.0 0.39 Damp this morning, but no precip overnight; morning low only 42.8. Yesterday's high of 60.4 was warmest since 12/1, combined with low of 37.4, average of 48.9 highest since 11/22. Snow cover is just over 50%; about 2" where it's there, so 1 inch depth reported and I took SWE sample from an area with 1" depth. Only a tiny bit of snow left on my north facing roof, still draining on sidewalk, it won't survive 15 minutes of sun. Slow start to Great Backyard Bird count with such nice (if dreary) weather.
2/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T Well yesterday finished off all the natural snow except a few patches, of course the plow and shovel piles will last quite a bit longer. T today breaks string of 43 days (Since Jan 7) with snow cover. High 66.2 was warmest since Oct 28; low 42.8, 54.5 avg. Winds howling overnight. 11 species, 65 birds on first day of GBBC, very low activity at the feeder!!!
2/20/2011 7:00 AM T T T T T Only a few very small patches of natural snow remain; even the man made piles shrank quite a bit yesterday. A few isolated snowflakes fell in the late morning. Temps fell from a midnight high of 49.2 to a midnight low of 22.2 for a 35.7 avg, but most of the day was in the 30's with brutal winds. Surprisingly, only a few small branches down.
2/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.21 2.3 0.21 2.5 0.21 Yesterday 20.3/41.5 = 30.9 avg. Light snow began minutes after midnight and was at 2.0" by 4 AM, then rate decreased. 31.1 F at 7 AM with very light snow. Should be a good day for the GBBC, with bird crazed by the snow cover. Sorry for late report, had to corral 2 cats for visits to "Cousin Beth", which is who we tell them the vet is :)
2/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 T T 1.0 0.14 Light fall (Trace) of tiny (0.1-0.5 mm)snow grains during early AM hours, bounced off car hoods and windshield, collecting around outline of cars and on wipers and base of windshield. I was a bit stunned when I got my atlas out to start plotting Irene on the Southeast US map, and the plots are right next to those of "Floyd 1999". Raritan basin river gages all start today above the 75th percentile for the date. Will test drive the generator today (can't be without a sump pump for long if we get a ton of rain). 69.6 F, 87% rh at 7AM with low overcast rapidly streaming SSW-NNE
8/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.24 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Not as much rain as we could have had; that's a good thing. South Branch Raritan in High Bridge still rising this morning though.
8/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Small shower overnight. Dew is as think as cream cheese on a bagel, despite overcast skies. 72.3 F 92% at 7 AM. IMPORTANT NOTE: FT.DIX RADAR HAS FAILED, SO UNTIL IT IS REPAIRED (Work in progress) NWS WILL HAVE NO RAINFALL ESTIMATES. THEREFORE IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO FILE SIGNIFICANT WEATHER REPORTS IF HEAVY RAINFALL OCCURS!!! For those that I had Mat contact yesterday on my behalf, that makes your reports even more important! Please be sure to include your entire daily total in your regular daily reports. Good Luck everyone; while Irene is only a Cat 1, the prolonged period of TS or Hurricane force winds and excessive rainfall makes this an event to seriously prepare for.
8/28/2011 8:15 AM 6.65 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Wow. Severe Flooding in High Bridge. Backyards are part of the river (South Branch Raritan), some cars underwater. Tree leaning on wires across from elementry school, county Road 513 shut down. I was standing on Bridge over the river and it kept shaking; that was from logs and other debris hitting the supports... I got off of it. 4th highest water level in 92 years here and still rising as of 11 AM. Edit: as of 11 AM second highest river level in recorded history and still rising!
8/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.14 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Reached 2nd highest crest in 92 years on South Branch Raritan, Lake Solitude Dam survived in High Bridge. 9/24/2011 7:00 AM 2.20 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 UNCLE!! Another soaking day from morning through late evening, thought it was over by 1 AM, but nooooo, another shower just after added 0.04". 0.70" between readings at 8:00 and 9:30 PM. September is now another 10 inch month; 10.15" so far. They used to be rare!
