Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2010 8:00 AM 5.01 M M M M Still raining, 57.1° This morning's 5.01" + yesterday's 0.49" = 5.50" for this storm SO FAR. And the 5.01" is a 24hr record for this station in 899 days! Our pond has overflowed. The basement pumps are kicking on every two minutes. The town's emergency siren has gone off several times this morning. Thankfully the electricity is holding and the rain seems to be slowing down. [Added: Thanks, HN-8! Nice to be back. Glad I came home early; can you imagine coming back from a vacation to a toally flooded basement???]
10/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.31 M M M M Sunny, crisp, 47.2° with heavy dew. 24hr: 44.5/59.2° Total 3 day storm total = 5.81" (0.49 + 5.01 + 0.31); total precip for entire month of September =2.59" Basement pumps stopped running and SUN re-appeared at 5:15pm yesterday afternoon.
10/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, breezy, 44.8° 24hr: 42.7/58.5° Continuing to pot up cuttings and carry in tender plants that need to winter indoors. In both 2009 & 2008 we had snow before Halloween (very unusual).
10/4/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Overcast with occasional light drizzle, 45.5° 24hr: 45.0/57.4°
10/5/2010 7:30 AM 0.38 M M M M Overcast with occasional light rain, 48.4° 24hr: 45.2/49.5° Better accelerate the speed with which I'm bringing in plants! Brrrr.
10/6/2010 7:30 AM 0.06 M M M M Mostly cloudy with small patches of blue appearing, 50.8° 24hr: 48.4/60.7°
10/7/2010 7:30 AM T M M M M Very light rain, 49.9° 24hr: 48.2/57.1° I might not have known it was raining had I not been going out to check the gauge and could feel it falling.
10/8/2010 7:30 AM 0.02 M M M M Gorgeous sunny morning, 44.8° 24hr: 44.5/64.1° The 0.02" was the remainder of the light rain that fell yesterday morning immediately after observation time
10/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 52.9° 24hr: 45.5/66.4° A picture perfect October day!
10/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 35.4° 24hr: 33.8/63.5° With forecast so dangerously close to our first frost, we carried in all of the pots of plants that need to be overwintered indoors during the day yesterday.
10/11/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 48.6° 24hr: 43.2/63.4°
10/12/2010 7:30 AM 0.25 M M M M Overcast, 55.3° 24hr: 48.6 [yesterday's am reset] /67.5° Lightning & thunder began rolling in just before 7pm. Continued for most of the evening. Surprised there was only 0.25" of rain in the gauge this morning.
10/13/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 36.5° 24hr: 36.5/62.8° Very heavy dew or a "T" but given the temps, recording it as dew: 0.00". Large mixed flocks of grackles, starlings all over the neighborhood yesterday.
10/14/2010 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear, 36.7° 24hr: 36.2/56.5° With 4 of 5 days in the 30°s at night, the fall foliage is exceptional. The rising sun striking the yellow, orange, and red leaves, and the blue sky make a picture-perfect October morning. 1/13/2011 8:00 AM T T M 8.5 M Sunny, 17.5° 24hr: 16.7/28.3° Some drifting and blowing around of snow after the storm ended; there was 0.4" inch of snow on the snowboard, but by the pattern of it, and the few flakes inside the gauge, I think it's blowing snow, not snowfall.
1/14/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 M Overcast, 14.6° 24hr: 11.9/25.4° A break from 4 days in a row of 17° at obs. This morning is 14°! Today is a good day to finish off the 2011 garden seed order...
1/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M Overcast, 10.1° 24hr: 4.7/29.3° Lowest temp of the winter to date; three days with temps < 10° this winter to date. Birdfeeders are very active places!
1/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M Sunny, 22.1° 24hr: 10.1 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /34.6°
1/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.5 M Cloudy, 14.4° 24hr: 13.1/32.9° Finding undisturbed spots in representative places to measure depth of total snow/ice is getting really difficult.
1/18/2011 7:30 AM 0.48 2.1 0.42 7.0 M Sleet and freezing rain, 26.1° 24hr: 13.9/27.9° Glad I don't have to drive today! Lake roads are a mess; hope the county roads are a lot better than this for commuters...
1/19/2011 7:20 AM 0.72 T M 7.5 M Overcast, fog, 32.2° 24hr: 26.1/34.0° God bless the inventor of YakTracs! Couldn't have made it out to the gauge without them: water on top of an ice layer on top of snow. Very dicey. Despite the compression from the ice and rain the Total Snow/ice is deeper today; perhaps because the metal ruler could finally punch through the bottom ice layer. Quite a winter for accurate measurement!
1/20/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 T M 6.0 M Hazy sun, 22.9° 24hr: 22.9/39.8° Yesterday remained "Ice World" until early evening when temps rose. Ice in and on everything. Small limbs down. Trees laying on wires. Last night the power was out between 2:50am and 4:45am. Cable (and our Internet connection) was just restored, causing this late report. Snowpack frozen rock solid; metal ruler cannot penetrate it, so 6" is my best guess.
1/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.40 4.3 0.40 10.0 M Sunny, 20.2° 24hr: 19.6/31.1° First time the gauge & snowboard totals matched exactly! The "new coat" on the existing snowpack is light and fluffy; layers underneath have ice layers like a 10" lasagna.
1/22/2011 8:00 AM T T M 10.0 M Sunny, 3.6° 24hr: 0.7/29.7° First zero in a long time. "T" were short bursts of snow flurries throughout yesterday; no further accumulation.
1/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Hazy sun, 7.4° 24hr: -3.4/24.8° First below zero day & coldest day of this winter. 9.0" Total Snow is approximate; so much blown around and so many ice layers in this snowpack. First birdsong this morning! A single house sparrow outside the bedroom window at sunrise.
1/24/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Sunny, -3.1° 24hr: -3.4/23.2° Yesterday afternoon I chiseled out a plug of the snowpack with an ice-scraper to measure Total Snow from undrifted, representative sample: 8.5" The plug allowed a clean side-wall to measure verticle depth, but was too messy to get a core for SWE. Can't get through the bottom ice layer.
1/25/2011 7:30 AM 0.02 0.2 0.02 8.5 M Snowing, 23.4° 24hr: -3.6/23.6° The minus 3.6 occurred right after yesterday morning's reset as temps continued to fall for a while after the sun came up. Another rare match this morning between SWE of the gauge and the snowboard. It's light, fluffy snow.
1/26/2011 7:30 AM T T M 8.0 M Overcast, 25.4° 24hr: 19.6/37.6° "T" is from light flurries yesterday morning after obs time.
1/27/2011 7:30 AM 0.85 7.1 0.84 15.0 M Overcast, 28.3° 24hr: 25.4/33.3° The morning part of the storm began at 8:56am and resulted in 1". Just before 2pm the snow picked up again, mixing very briefly with sleet around 4pm, with snow continuing overnight for 7.1"
1/28/2011 8:00 AM T T M 14.0 M Lightly snowing, 21.4° 24hr: 14.4/38.0° If I had not been outside checking the gauge I might not have realized it was snowing again. Very fine and light. Snowcover is so deep hyssop seed heads are just poking through & the juncos walk from seed head to seed head eating, instead of flying from plant to plant.
1/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 13.0 M Mostly sunny, with high cirrus clouds coming over from the west, 21.1° 24hr: 19.6/36.2° This round of snowflakes is just beautiful! HUGE. With the morning sun in the east this new coating looked like fairie dust or diamonds sprinkled everywhere. Beautiful individual shapes, too. With the ruler in hand I measured the largest one I could find: 0.2"
1/30/2011 8:00 AM 0.01 0.2 0.02 12.5 M Hazy sun, 17.5° 24hr: 17.1/36.2° I'm really concerned about the pond fish's survival this winter. No thaws or breaks in the cold to allow even a brief air exchange. Snow cover completely obliterates its location, covering the rocks -which usually starts the melting/thawing process every year. In 2 of the past 10 years in my garden journal, the first spring bulbs, snowdrops were already up in the pond garden. Not 2011.
1/31/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.0 M Sunny, 13.0° 24hr: 13.0/37.6° Total precip for January: 3.28" and this year it was all snow & sleet, no rain.
2/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.18 1.2 0.19 12.0 M "Same old, same old," 20.7° 24hr: 12.4/36.0° While out swapping out the gauges and taking core from snowboard: it was mostly snow mixed with sleet; in the time it took to melt samples, it switched to mostly sleet mixed with snow. Had trouble opening the kitchen door yesterday afternoon: the weight of the icicles and ice dams in the gutters caused them to sag down just enough to hit the top of the door. This is reminding me of the winter of 1995...
2/2/2011 7:30 AM 0.70 0.9 0.61 12.0 M Sleet & freezing rain, 27.3° 24hr: 20.0/29.0° The crust on the new snow penetrated to the bottom of the snowboard core; came out like an ice disk. A coating of ice on everything, between 1/8 and 1/4" thick.
2/3/2011 7:30 AM 0.17 T T 12.0 M SUNNY!, 17.3° 24hr: 16.9/35.8° From the sound of ice pelting the house all last night in the wind, I'm surprised there is still so much ice still on the trees and shrubs this morning. A light dusting of snow overnight on all the ice and frozen sleet, not even 0.01" SWE.
2/4/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.0 M Sunny, 8.9° with heavy frost. 24hr: 6.3/32.2° Ice still clinging to the trees and shrubs despite yesterday's sun. Measured one of the chunks that fell off: 1/10" thick ice layer. Will try to chop through the snowpack today to measure a side slice; my metal ruler can't penetrate, so 12" is an approximation.
2/5/2011 8:30 AM 0.03 M M 12.0 M Overcast, 28.8° 24hr: 9.5 [yesterday a.m.'s reset]/ 32.8° There was a period of very heavy sleet, FR, and graupel at 7:30am. Snowboard was incased in ice, impossible to get a reading from it. Needed a paint-scraper to clean off the board afterward! [Thanks, HN-8! I also wondered about the effect of the interior rows of ridges inside the 1lb coffe can on precise measurement. But it beats breaking my outer gauge on the "cement" outside!]
2/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.24 T M 12.0 2.25 Mostly cloudy, 31.9° 24hr: 28.8/36.0° Precip in the gauge was liquid! Result of yesterday's sleet, freezing rain, and rain. Carved out a square in a representative spot: snowpack is 11.8" with a SWE of 2.25" -but was unable to get through the bottom layer of ice (looks like 1/2 - 1" thick).
2/7/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.5 M Cloudy, 26.3° 24hr: 25.4/44.6° Yesterday afternoon was the first time temps rose out of the 30°s in over a month (1/2/11). Red sky in the east this morning.
2/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.21 0.2 0.05 11.0 M Cloudy, with brief breaks of blue skies just before obs time, 32.8° 24hr: 26.5/43.4° Must have been mostly rain overnight to explain the meager 0.2" of new snow on the board & SWE of 0.05, vs. the content of the gauge: 0.21. More birdsong this morning ...
2/9/2011 7:30 AM T T M 11.0 M Partly cloudy, 8.5° 24hr: 6.8/33.1° The "T" occurred during a few, brief, snow showers yesterday morning; no accumulation.
2/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.0 M Sunny, 14.6° 24hr: 8.3/30.8° With the solid ice, frozen snowpack outside, the 'forced' hyacinth bulb in bloom now on our kitchen table is a joy to the soul! Actual measurements on Total Depth of Snow will have to wait until weekends when I can chop out another core.
2/11/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.0 M Cloudy, 8.6° 24hr: 6.3/28.3° Preparing the basement now for the inevitable rain that will come --on top of this extensive ice snowpack & frozen ground. Never pretty. Always causes basement flooding....
2/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.0 M Overcast, 28.3° 24hr: 8.8 [yesterday am's reset] /35.6° Twenty degrees warmer this morning than yesterday -and it still feels as cold!
2/13/2011 9:00 AM T T M 10.0 M A few light flurries, 28.8° 24hr: 16.7/37.8° Light flurries occasionally throughout the day yesterday; one squall @ 4pm left a dusting. But everything was gone by this morning.
2/14/2011 7:20 AM T T M 9.0 M Mostly cloudy, 41.6° 24hr: 28.8 [yesterday am's reset] /45.5° Liquid precip in the paths this morning! Wow. "T" = a few rounds of snow flurries yesterday morning; nothing left of it this morning.
2/15/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M Bright sun, 18.9° 24hr: 18.4/54.2° A productive day for snowmelt yesterday: warm temps + wind. Walkways had 1" of standing water in most places. 11pm swept them all off so this morning they would not be sheets of ice.
2/16/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.5 M Mostly cloudy, 21.1° 24hr: 16.6/32.8° Despite returning to cold temps and with no rain at all, the front basement pump switched on briefly around mid-day yesterday. The day before's melting of snowpack was dramatic.
2/17/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Cloudy, 38.7° 24hr: 21.1/45.9° Actual measurement of snowpack: yesterday afternoon we chiseled out a plug all the way down through the ice layer so I could measure depth this morning. Depth of standing snow/ice is 9.0" with 100% snowcover. (Recent 'best estimates' have been too low.)
2/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 M Cloudy, 47.9° 24hr: 36.2/58.7° Basement pump went on briefly again yesterday, still (thankfully) no rain, just melt-off. There is approx 1 -2" of water in the bottom of my sample hole: 7.5" snow/ice; 100% coverage.
2/19/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Partly cloudy, strong NW wind, 34.9° 24hr: 34.6/60.8° Snowpack down to 5" 100% coverage, but circles around the trees are melting bare ground into the snow/ice. Sample hole had widened and the tops of rocks in the pond garden are becoming visible again.
2/20/2011 8:00 AM T T M 3.0 M Sunny, 15.3° & less windy. 24hr: 13.9/37.3° Back to approximating the snowdepth! The sharp sided cube we'd chopped into the snow/ice pack has melted into a shallow basin filled entirely with ice. Still 100% coverage. Wind was fierce yesterday! "T" resulted from snow flurries/squalls on and off yesterday.
2/21/2011 8:30 AM 0.63 7.5 0.57 10.5 M Overcast, 30.8° 24hr: 15.3/36.9° The new 7.5" appears to be all snow.
2/22/2011 7:30 AM T T M 9.5 M Bright sun, 9.9° 24hr: 9.5/37.8° "T" = leftover flakes yesterday morning, following the 7 1/2" overnight snowfall.
2/23/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.5 M Sunny, 11.7° 24hr: 9.5/38.2° Even with yesterday's cold temps and lack of rain, the basement pump was still on occasionally. Slow melts of large snowpacks are most welcome!
2/24/2011 6:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Clear, 9.5° 24hr: 9.5/45.4° Another morning with beautiful ice crystals on the gauge and some windows.
2/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.86 0.0 M 5.0 M Moderate rain, 34.7° 24hr: 9.4 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /49.5° Both pumps are now on continuously. The path to the gauge is 3" of slush. Snowpack has reduced dramatically: to approx. 5" [We drain northwest into the Wallkill River system.]
2/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.43 0.0 M 5.0 M Overcast, 25.4° 24hr: 23.2/36.2° 100% coverage, frozen like a rock. Total rain over two day reporting period: 1.29"
2/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Mostly sunny, 33.7° 24hr: 25.4 [yesterday a.m. reset] /43.2° 100% snow/ice coverage. Beautiful birdsong this morning. Trying to show restraint with seed starting for 2011 garden!
2/28/2011 7:30 AM 0.19 0.0 M 4.0 M Overcast, windy, 35.5° 24hr: 31.0/47.7° A lot of melt yesterday; several feet of bare ground on south side of the house, and enlarging circles around the base of all of the trees. Pump on every 6 minutes.
3/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.22 0.0 M 3.0 M Mostly sunny, with some high clouds, 26.8° 24hr: 26.1/49.7° Dramatic snow melt yesterday, even though we 'missed another bullet.' Only one short burst of heavy rain around 9am; still: basement pump is on every 3 minutes. Total precip for February: 3.63"
3/2/2011 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 M Sunny, 31.1° 24hr: 25.4/42.7° Still almost 100% coverage except for widening circles around trees and several feet of bare ground on the south side of the house. Basements pump on every 7 minutes.
3/3/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M Sunny, 13.5° 24hr: 12.4/47.7° Basement pump still on despite days without precip; every 7 minutes. Here the red winged blackbird, not the robin, is the "first sign of Spring." One was killed by a sharp shinned hawk near our birdfeeder yesterday. So much for Spring's arrival...
3/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M Mostly sunny, with a few high clouds, 22.3° 24hr: 13.3/33.1° A vaseful of 'forced' forsythia on the table looks beautiful compared to the gray, dirty snow/ice pack outside the window!
3/5/2011 8:00 AM T 0.0 M 1.0 M Drizzling, 40.5° 24hr: 22.5/43.4° Pump on every 7 minutes. Maple sap running in the trees; car windshield in driveway under maple limbs covered with sap.
3/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.09 0.0 M T M Raining, 48.4° 24hr: 40.5/60.3° WOW! In 24 hours we're finally down to 50% coverage of snow/ice. And in a portion of bare earth: snowdrops are up and ready to open! Pump on every 4 minutes...
3/7/2011 7:30 AM 2.86 T M T M Light snow, 26.6° 24hr: 26.6/51.3 Awoke to a fresh layer of ice overtopped with a dusting of snow. Ice drops hanging in the trees. Pump on every two minutes.
3/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Sunny, 27.7° 24hr: 21.1/41.0° Water continues to move into the basement; pump on every 3 minutes. Only a few patches of unshoveled, unpiled snow remain. Garden is awash in blooming snowdrops!
3/9/2011 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Mostly cloudy, 28.8° 24hrs: 24.1/45/5° Frost on gauge; pump on every 4 minutes.
3/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.28 T M T M Light rain, 34.7° 24hr: 28.6/40.5° Our pump burned out last night at 9pm. By the time we pulled the old one, dropped the new one and connected all the fittings, there was 4" of water throughout the basement. Just as we finished (approx 10pm) the NEXT round started, beginning as snow and sleet. This had better NOT be a summer of draught!!
3/11/2011 8:00 AM 4.10 0.0 M T M Overcast, 43.9° 24hrs: 34.7/48.8° Both pumps on continually; 4.10" in 24hrs is a LOT of rain! Snowpack is mostly gone, except for remains of the highest piles, and deepest shade. Floating fish in the pond, victims of a winter with continuous ice coverage without any thaws. Route 23 closed again this morning on the mountain.
3/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Cloudy, 40.5° 24hr: 30.8/52.4° With both basement pumps working, cleanout begins. When I started whinning yesterday dealing with our flooded basement, I thought of the thousands in eastern Japan dealing with unimaginably worse. Perspective is a wonderful thing....
3/13/2011 9:10 AM T T M 0.0 M A few flurries, overcast skies, 39.8° 24hr: 35.5/51.7° First of the purple crocus opened yesterday, a very cheerful sight during basement cleanout and dump runs! [THANK YOU for the time reminder; had to edit mine!]
3/14/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast, 33.3° 24hr: 32.9/46.6° Three dry days and the front pump is still going strong. Once the cleaned out basement dries out, we hope to get everything back in --before the next rain!
3/15/2011 8:00 AM T T M 0.0 M Sunny with high, thin clouds, 24.5° 24hr: 22.5/33.5° Pump STILL going! "T" = snow flurries all morning yesterday.
3/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.31 0.0 M 0.0 M Raining, 34.7° 24hr: 24.7/51.3° Yesterday's sun and warmth was wonderful. Back to cold and grey. And rain. Poor pumps....
3/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.16 0.0 M 0.0 M Sunny with a few high clouds, 38.2° 24hr: 34.7/54.2° Storm total (2 days) = 0.47" Pump still going. Going to the four day SpringFest Garden Show today in Augusta. CanNOT wait for this annual jump-start to Spring!
3/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Hazy sun, 49.7° 24hr: 38.2 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /63.2° The sky has been covered with many HUGE flocks of Canadian Geese this morning, heading north.
3/19/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Mostly sunny, 41.2° 24hr: 38.2/72.9° Geese continued to pass overhead all day yesterday after the huge number seen at obs time.
3/20/2011 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Sunny, 30.4° 24hr: 24.3/45.9° Feels much warmer this morning with no wind and abundant sunshine. Robin song morning and evening.
3/21/2011 7:30 AM 0.22 1.5 0.20 1.5 0.20 Snowing, 31.7° 24hr: 30.4/51.7° So much for the First Full Day of Spring! Unusual that the melted gauge reading was higher than the melted board; but I had put the funnel back on top and the snow was mounded up on top of it.
3/22/2011 8:00 AM 0.27 1.0 M T M Cloudy, 36.9° 24hr: 31.7 [yesterday a.m.'s resest] /39.6° Another inch of snow fell after yesterday's 7:30am obs, before switching to rain. Last night there was 100% snowfall coverage on the ground; this morning only 1/3 of the ground is covered.
3/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.32 3.1 0.25 3.0 0.25 Snowing, 32.6° 24hr: 31.5/47.3° Snow began shortly after midnight. This is a very "sticky" snow, and even without the funnel in the gauge, a big mound of snow developed on top. Tried to carefully tap straight down with the large, flat paintscraper that I use for the snowboard, but I think some of the side snow fell in and was measured. In an "all snow" event without wind there usually isn't that much difference between the gauge and the snowboad as today: 0.32 vs. 0.25"
3/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.39 2.2 0.36 3.5 M Overcast, 27.9° 24hr: 25.4/35.5° Thin layer of ice under the snow on the snowboard & ice droplets frozen on inside of the gauge. Could scrape down the gauge; couldn't get the ice off the board. Was an all-snow event here except for a brief period around 5-6pm when it changed to sleet and some rain.
3/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.5 M Sunny, 22.3° 24hr: 20.7/40.7° A layer of ice back on the pond this morning. 100% snow coverage. The only forsythias in bloom around here are the vaseful of 'forced' forsythias on our kitchen table!
3/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.5 M Sunny, 21.1° 24hr: 18.5/41.2° Pond encased in ice again. 90% snow coverage of 1/2" Crocus and snowdrops blooming above the snow. Hyacinths still in tight bud at the soil line.
3/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Sunny, 23.0° 24hr: 20.7/40.1° When reading min/max temps was surprised it had gotten out of the 30°s. Some icicles remain hanging from the roof. 50% coverage of snow 1/4 - 1/2" deep.
3/28/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Sunny, 19.8° 24hr: 19.6/41.6° Approximately 20% snow cover remains. Covered 1st veggie bed with poly tunnels to begin warming up the soil for the coming garden season.
3/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Sunny, 25.4° 24hr: 19.8/44.1° Snow cover holding at approx 20%. That's a neighborhood average; some yards are almost snow-free while our yard still has 50%+ coverage, including areas right out in the open.

Several hours later we got the edge of one of the storms with 0.23".
7/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 66.2° 24hr: 53.8/81.5° Mosquitos this year are horrendous; they're out all hours of the day and so numerous at dusk that we move indoors to a mosquito-free zone!
7/11/2011 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 69.8° 24hr: 62.3/80.6° Harvested 1st ripe small tomato yesterday; sowed replacement rows of mesclun and lettuce.
7/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warm morning with hazy sun, 76.3° 24hr: 70.0/86.8° There was a single drop in the gauge this morning, but it looks like condensation from the heavy dew. A few windows in the house had condensation on the inside due to the A/C.
7/13/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 70.4° 24hr: 63.9/85.9°
7/14/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Perfect morning! Clear, crisp, light breeze, 65.0° 24hr: 57.8/78.5° All of our rain happened yesterday morning before 11am: 0.03" We were in Monclair/Bloomfield area yesterday at 7pm when quite a storm blew up; trees down with police road closures off Broad Street. 7/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 73.6° 24hr: 70.4/93.1° Yesterday really was like walking around inside a convection oven! Outside only long enough to fill bird baths and water pots and planters, and boy, the heat really 'got your attention.'
7/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 74.7° 24hr: 71.3/86.6° Ten straight days in a row that overnight temps did not get below 70° here. A very unusual summer. Hope we get rain soon; it's also extremely dry.
7/25/2011 7:10 AM 0.11 M M M M Overcast, 70.7° 24hr: 69.1/82.6° All of the 0.11" occurred during a short rainstorm that began 2:10pm. Came to quickly to be effectively absorbed by the extremely dry ground.
7/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.59 M M M M Mostly sunny, 69.7° 24hr: 65.9/73.6° Thank God! An entire afternoon of gentle, steady rain. We needing a soaking rain here badly. [Report delayed due to an hour & a half power outage this morning; power just restored.]
7/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.71 M M M M Partly cloudy, 65.0° 24hr: 59.6/80.8° Storm started here yesterday as light rain and distant thunder at 6:10pm & built in several waves (T&L/heavy rain) from there. We're grateful that the day before we'd had the afternoon of gentle soaking rain so that all of this bounty did not just run off! It was needed...
7/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Very hazy sun, 68.6° 24hr: 59.2/76.3° This 0.02" must have occurred overnight; it didn't rain here during daylight or evening hours.
7/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.17 M M M M Overcast, very low cloud ceiling, 70.2° 24hr: 67.1/80.8° In hind-sight, tilling and sowing seed for a new pond garden lawn four days ago was a great move! It didn't seem that way when working on the project, given that starting a lawn from seed in an extending dry and hot period in the middle of summer -is not usually such a splendid idea.
7/30/2011 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Sunny, 71.6° with much lower humidity. 24hr: 66.4/81.5° The 0.10" occurred with one brief, fast moving storm dumping heavy rain. It was preceded by almost two hours of distant rumbles of thunder in the NW & N.
7/31/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 78.1° 24hr: 58.5/82.8° (Gauge read at 8am; temps updated at 10am.) There was almost 0.01" in the gauge but it appears to be from very heavy dew, so I reported 0.00"
8/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Sunny, 69.8° 24hr: 62.8/82.4° A brief rainstorm moved through in the evening. At 2am there was amazing "heat lightning" in a clear, star-filled sky. [Total rain for July = 3.16"]
8/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 70.4° 24hr: 66.1/84.8° Had to dig out the shade cloth yesterday to cover the beds for late season salad green transplants; most years I don't have to bother. Direct sowed seed under boards, also to cool the soil enough for germination.
8/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 65.7° 24hr: 58.1/81.4°
8/4/2011 7:30 AM 0.54 M M M M Overcast, 65.0° 24hr: 64.3/80.5° Much needed rain, thankfully, started slowly, so the 0.54" didn't just run off.
8/5/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M M M Sunny, 66.1° with very heavy dew. 24hr: 59.9/77.2° Not sure if the 0.02" in the gauge this morning is the result of very heavy dew or actual precipitation.
8/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 71.1° 24hr: 66.1/81.4°
8/7/2011 8:30 AM 1.08 M M M M Overcast, 70.9° 24hr: 68.0/80.1° It's been a while since the inner gauge has overflowed! We certainly needed the rain.
8/8/2011 7:30 AM 0.21 M M M M Mostly cloudy, with sun peeking through thick haze, 68.6° 24hr: 67.3/81.5° It was "raining" on the inside of the bedroom windows this morning due to condensation and A/C.
8/9/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, through a high, thin overcast, and heavy dew, 68.6° 24hr: 62.5/81.5° Same obs temp and daytime high as yesterday!

8/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, beautiful morning, 58.7° 24hr: 51.3/74.3° A red fox on our patio when we went to let the dog out last night. We've never seen as many fox as we've seen this year!

8/15/2011 8:00 AM 1.24 M M M M Cloudy, 66.6° 24hr: 63.5/67.1° 1.24" is the exact same gauge reading as yesterday morning!
8/16/2011 7:30 AM 3.63 M M M M Overcast, 62.1° 24hr: 61.4/70.0° I sent in a SWR yesterday at 3:35pm after seeing a half hour of the hardest, longest lasting rainfall I've ever seen. No wind. No thunder at the beginning. From the morning obs to 3:35pm = 2.15" -most in that half hour. Flooding everywhere. Both basement pumps running. Side yard underwater. And additional 1.48" at this morning's obs, totaled 3.63" for today; that plus two prior days = 6.1" ! Without a hurricane or TS!!
8/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.14 M M M M Sunny, 62.1° 24hr: 57.4.70.6° The system finally cleared out yesterday mid-afternoon, after a few more, thankfully brief, downpours. Storm total over the four reporting days is 6.25"
8/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Cloudy, 65.3° 24hr: 59.6/78.7° A brief shower this morning around 6am. Mucking out the pond yesterday, removed several inches of sediment that had rushed in during the torrential rains. Glad the fish are still there & hadn't "wandered off" into the surrounding gardens when the pond had overflowed so badly!
8/19/2011 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, light fog, 64.3° 24hr: 61.2/77.2° Folks just south of us must have gotten clobbered last night! Intense lightning with thunder in the distance, mostly to the SE between approx 9pm and 10:15pm. Not a drop here. Just heavy condensation in the gauge.
8/20/2011 8:00 AM 0.73 M M M M Sunny, 60.3° 24hr: 55.6/79.0° The rain came in one intense, brief T-storm approx 5:30pm with extremely heavy rains.
8/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 68.6° 24hr: 60.3/76.0° Ran into a red fox trotting across our patio while coming back in from checking the gauge. Very heavy condensation in the gauge; not sure whether to report a "T" or not, but since we did not observe rain or see any evidence of it this morning, I'll report zero.
8/22/2011 8:00 AM 0.35 M M M M Sunny, breezy, crisp morning, 59.2° 24hr: 58.1/78.7° A few bursts of light rain mid afternoon yesterday, but the storms were moving by to our north. The bulk of the rain came with heavy rain & T-storms between 5:30 and 6:30pm
8/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 59.2° with moderate dew. 24hr: 51.8/70.2°

8/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, humid, 67.5° 24hr: 61.7/74.3° Dark skies; feels as if it could begin raining any second.
8/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.96 M M M M Mostly sunny, 67.9° 24hr: 62.8/72.4° I sent in a SWR at 11am yesterday after a T-storm dumped 0.52" in one hour; 0.44" additional = today's total of 0.96" The M-T-D total rain is now 10.33" - before The Big One. This could be awful for our shallow rooted maples ...
8/27/2011 8:15 AM 0.02 M M M M Raining, 69.3° 24hr: 65.7/80.1° Rain had just started at obs time but ended shortly thereafter. Hope we don't loose power today/tomorrow!
8/28/2011 7:30 AM 6.76 M M M M Raining, 67.5° 24hr: 66.4/73.6 Both basement pumps running continuously, barely keeping up with water flooding in. Limbs down. Had t drag a small tree out of the road that had fallen across it. Stream flooding the ballfield. Haven't seen that since our Hundred Year Flood in 2000.
8/29/2011 11:40 AM 1.11 M M M M Power went out yesterday at 3:47PMfill file multi days reports once power is restored. We are told it can take 6 days before power is turned on!!!
8/30/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M [Was unable to report; still without power since 3:47pm Sunday.] Total for Irene though was 7.89" Amazing amount of rain in a single day. Full report on 8/31/11...
8/31/2011 4:00 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M Finally! Power back on after 4 days without it. Basement flooded when power cut out & both pumps stopped; as water rose we carried washer, dryer, fridge and as much as we could out to side yard & covered with tarps. Mulberry tree that fell on the car needs to be sawed up. It looks like a Third World Country! 7.89" total for Irene here; 18.22" total for August. I actually went back and re-checked that total. AMAZING! But thankfully, the lake dam held. And no one was injured (100+ families without power). Neighbors commuting "down below" are having horrendous (2 - 4 hour) commutes still, with all the flooding on the rivers and road closures below.
9/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 57.8° with heavy dew. Min/max reset after our 4 days w/o power: 48.8/76.7° It's ironic; the days when a Significant Weather Report is most needed, you can't due to loss of power/Internet!
9/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 64.3° 24hr: 57.1/75.8° Clean up continues. Basement sufficiently dried out to put back the washer, dryer and fridge yesterday. Technician was able to save the oil burner; first day with hot showers in over a week (not counting solar heated 'SunBag' ones!)
9/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 67.9° 24hr: 59.8/75.4°

9/5/2011 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, very still and humid, 67.9° 24hr: 66.4/78.7° Some severe storms went to our north last evening; only 3 drops in the gauge here this morning.
9/6/2011 8:00 AM 2.80 M M M M Raining, 57.8° 24hr: 57.6/72.9° A few extremely heavy rain downpours yesterday afternoon with, thankfully, long pauses in between. Front basement pump back on. 2.80" in not rounded.
9/7/2011 8:00 AM 2.08 M M M M Overcast, 57.2° 24hr: 56.0/59.9° 2-day event total: 4.88" Route 23 closed due to flooding just above us. Both basement pumps running are keeping up with water coming in.
9/8/2011 8:00 AM 2.78 M M M M Overcast, 60.8° 24hr: 57/2/62.8° Most of yesterday was drizzle/very light rain, but extremely heavy rain came back with a vengeance at 4am -along with crashing lightning and thunder. Pumps working overtime. 3 day event total = 7.66" Route 23 now closed in two places: here on the mountain in Stockholm and down in Franklin.
9/9/2011 7:30 AM 0.01 M M M M Overcast, 63.2° 24hr: 60.8/71.8° Stairwell to basement door still flooded; pumps still running. Mosquitos everywhere!
9/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M SUNNY! 63.5° 24hr: 60.3/75.6° Front basement pump down to pumping every half hour. Progress...

9/13/2011 7:30 AM T 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 57.2° with heavy dew. 24hr: 56.3/74.0° Yesterday afternoon there was constant, distant, rolling thunder to our west, eventually drifting to our SW. The thunder continued for over one and a half hours. A few drops @ 3:30pm, but it I hadn't been here to see it, I would have reported zero precip.
9/14/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 67.7° 24hr: 57.2 [yesterday a.m.'s reset]/ 75.1° Lots of leaves beginning to fall; it certainly can't be because of either cold or lack of rain! Sun shines much lower into the windows and doors: time to order Spring bulbs!
9/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Overcast, 63.5° 24hr: 60.7/77.0° A powerful storm edged by us around midnight with loud thunder and lots of lightning, but just a little rain (0.02" here).
9/16/2011 7:20 AM 0.16 M M M M Sunny, crisp, beautiful morning, 44.5° 24hr: 44.3/64.4° Another woodchuck is back in the garden; no more zucchini!

9/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Overcast, lifting fog, humid, 65.0° 24hr: 60.7/74.3° Was not sure if the 0.01" in the gauge was actual rain or just very heavy condensation. I reported it as precip, although I did not observe rainfall during the past 24hours. Happy Fall Equinox!
9/24/2011 8:00 AM 1.58 M M M M Cloudy, 65.7° 24hr: 63.9/67.1° Delighted that the forecast number of inches of rain did not materialize, although it did come down very hard for a while around noon and into very early afternoon.
9/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, humid, 65.0° 24hr: 60.7/71.5° Beginning the Fall ritual of carrying in the plants that will be wintered indoors, and also some "insurance" pond fish. In case the coming winter is as bad as last, and there is uninterrupted ice on the pond, we'll have some survivors when Spring returns.
9/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 64.6° with heavy dew. 24hr: 59.2/74.2° Unusual September so far; no cold snaps/brushes with frost, followed by Indian Summer. It's all Indian Summer! If not for the woodchuck, this would be a great garden year...
9/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 62.3° with heavy dew. 24hr: 59.2/80.1° While working in the garden yesterday I remembered Ringwood's Comment: "Muggy and Buggy." Ditto!
9/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.66 M M M M Raining, 64.3° 24hr: 62.3/78.5° Yet another Flash Flood Warning. This precip brings our M-T-D total to 10.60" (unrounded).
9/29/2011 7:30 AM 2.30 M M M M Mostly cloudy, 64.1° 24hr: 62.1/71.5° 1.25" by 1pm yesterday; then two major batches of very heavy rain at approx 3:30am and again at 5am, the latter containing lots of lightning & rolling thunder. Storm total = 2.96" bringing September to date rain to 12.90" A ridiculous amount of rain. Both basements pumps on AGAIN.
9/30/2011 8:00 AM 1.30 M M M M Mostly cloudy, 54.9° 24hr: 49.7/69.3° Most of the 1.30" fell during two hours early afternoon; I sent in SWR at 3pm. Brings the total for September to 14.20" That, on top of the 18.22" here in August = impossibly saturated ground (the lawn squishes when you walk on it!) and no where for the water to go when the basement pumps are working. This is going to be a very interesting winter here if this pattern holds. Better extend the flag I put on the snowboard last year so that I can FIND it when we get "dumpers."
