12/7/2010 9:00 AM M 7.0 M 40.0 M Day 5 of the record lake effect saga here in Western New York continues! Bought a roof rack on my way into work today. I believe with the possibility of more snow (or rain) in the forecast over the upcoming weekend concerns locally will shift to increased risk of roofs collapsing. Since Dec. 3 (Day 1) cumulative total as of 9 am today (Dec. 7): 53"
12/8/2010 7:17 AM M 4.0 M 40.0 M Day 5. Only 4" in past 24 hours. Lake bands have weakened a bit and shifted a few miles north. No complaints here. Storm total in Randolph since event began last Friday: 57" (Thank God for lawn tractors with 48" snow throwers) Little ole' Randolph made the NBC Nightly News last night. Interesting how the news always references Buffalo when it comes to where all the heavy LE snow falls even though we're 65+ miles from there. We're certainly had our fair share of notable weather events the past year -- the tornado in July and now this. But that's what makes things interesting isn't it?
12/9/2010 7:42 AM M 12.0 M 42.0 M LES continues to pound the area although most of it stayed just north of us yesterday. Last night at 9 pm the band (with L. Huron connection) slide south over the area giving us 8" overnight (4" fell during the daylight hours yesterday). Snowing heavily this morning but with warmer air coming in aloft that will effectively shut down the LE machine until Sunday night/Monday. Where to put all this snow??? The village of Randolph is financially strapped with all this snow removal as much $$ was spent last July cleaning up after the F2 tornado that brought a lot of trees down in town. Everyone seems to be pitching in and helping clean neighbor's driveways, etc... There's always a silver lining. As of 7:55 am on Dec 9, depending on when one defines the beginning of this LES event we have received a total of 69" since 12/3 (65" since 12/4; 59" since 12/5). Deer are beginning to move into town looking for browse. Can only see their ears above the snow! WOW.
12/13/2010 7:56 AM M T M 24.0 M
12/14/2010 8:38 AM M 4.5 M 24.0 M Light snow on NW flow.
12/15/2010 8:35 AM M 9.0 M M M Moderate to heavy LE snow overnight on 310-320 flow. Lake Huron band feeding into L. Erie to provide a consistent snowfall from 9 pm to present. In the past 1.5 weeks an unusually strong Greenland block has allowed several low pressure systems to retrograde northwestward from New England/North Atlantic into Quebec which has resulted in a prolonged and consistent NW flow over the Great Lakes. As a result we have been contending with record snowfall amounts. There will be no doubt about a very white Christmas in our neck of the woods...

12/31/2010 8:49 AM M M M 10.0 M Thaw currently underway for a few days. Synopsis for past month: Lake effect machine kicked into high gear beginning on 12/1 after a synoptic system dumped close to 3" of rain on the area. Two distinct episodes at the beginning and middle of the month accounted for the majority of the snow for the month with several other nuisance LE snows. Interestingly, we have had little in the way of synoptic snows this season unlike areas in the east (NYC) and midwest/western US. Happy New Year to all. Total snowfall for month of December, 2010: 94"
