Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
11/27/2010 11:59 PM M T M M M Brief Lake Effect flurries overnight which melted by about 1000
12/1/2010 11:59 PM M 1.8 M M M
12/2/2010 11:59 PM M T M M M Intermittent flurries which were so tiny and infrequent that they were hard to see occurred between about 12:15 pm and midnight.
12/3/2010 11:59 PM M 0.6 M M M Snow flurries began faintly at 4:42 pm and within a few minutes had become a moderate snowfall, lasting less than 10 minutes. Flurries strengthened and weakened until about 9 pm, including a brief period of hail.
12/4/2010 11:59 PM M T M M M Overcast; calm; fine snowfall of < 1/16" We basically had 24 hours of lake-effect snow today. With occasionally brief exceptions, the snowfall was very fine, but easily visible, unlike the two preceding days when the exceedingly fine and intermittent snow was difficult to see at times.
12/5/2010 11:59 PM M 4.9 M M M Clear; slightly windy; overcast except for at least one small, "thin" area overhead allowing me to see Capella
12/6/2010 11:59 PM M 6.1 M 10.5 M Overcast; calm; light flurries; this has been another 24-hour event.
12/7/2010 11:59 PM M 3.0 M 13.5 M Overcast, calm, and a fine flurry; this has been nearly another 24-hour event. Yesterday's measurement of 10.5" of snow/ice on the ground was my first in the eight years I have been reporting Lake Effect snowfall, and I made only a single measurement, which may have been high based on the three measurements I made this evening and then averaged.
12/8/2010 11:59 PM M 3.8 M 11.0 M Overcast, calm + snowing almost moderately; occasional periods of sun between bands of Lake Effect snow during the late morning and early afternoon
12/9/2010 11:59 PM M 3.0 M 8.5 M Overcast, calm + clear; above-freezing temperatures melted a significant amount of snow on my snow boards (I failed to measure earlier in the day before temperatures rose), and therefore I adjusted all of my measurements by adding 2.2 inches, the difference between yesterday's ground measurement and today's
12/10/2010 11:59 PM M T M 6.0 M Overcast, calm + clear; light to moderate flurries for a couple of hours beginning at about 1315, but above freezing temperatures during the evening melted the trace amount
12/11/2010 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 4.0 M Overcast, windy + clear
12/12/2010 11:49 PM M 0.0 M 1.5 M Overcast, calm + clear; another day of above-freezing temperatures
12/13/2010 11:59 PM M 2.2 M 3.0 M Overcast, windy + snowing moderately; Lake Effect snow began at about 0830, strengthened to a moderate snow shower by about 1030, and continued most of the day with variable intensity
12/14/2010 11:59 PM M 3.5 M 5.0 M Mostly clear, calm + no precipitation; Lake Effect snow most of the day until early evening; I lingered for about 5 minutes to look for Geminids, but saw none. A setting, gibbous moon low in the western sky shone brightly, accompanied by Lake Effect bands to the southwest and east of me that were brilliantly illuminated by Rochester or the Towne Center at Webster, respectively; the band across the northern horizon loomed ominously dark gray against the black sky. I finished my time in the cold and snow by using my flashlight to follow the tracks of a deer past one of my stations before it crossed my driveway and walked alongside my car, until finally it crossed the street into a neighbor's yard, hunting for white acorns (Shirley and I had raked most of our acorns when we removed our leaves last month).
12/15/2010 11:59 PM M 3.0 M 6.5 M Mostly overcast, very slight wind + no precipitation; snow flurries began within minutes of finishing. I'm not certain if my measurements are correct, for I was away most of the day, and there may have been some melting due to possible sunshine at midday and during early afternoon. I observed considerable sunshine while traveling in other parts of Monroe County at those times, but do not know if similar conditions existed at home. At 0851 I made a measurement of 2.75" at one of my four stations as a reference, and during my official measurements nearly 16 hours later the depth of new snow at that same station was only 3.25".
12/16/2010 11:59 PM M 0.0 M M M A fine snow began sometime after midnight.
12/17/2010 11:59 PM M 1.7 M 5.5 M (1) @ 1212: Overcast, slightly windy + a stray snowflake; this is a precautionary measurement due to warming temperatures (2) @ 2359: Overcast, nearly calm, with an extremely slight, fine flurry (almost undetectable; radar confirms that I'm on the eastern fringe of the Lake Effect band) (3) Total depth of snow and ice decreased by approximately one inch during the day due to melting.
12/18/2010 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 4.5 M Overcast, calm + no precipitation; small, slightly brighter patch of cloud in front of a gibbous moon
12/19/2010 11:59 AM M T M M M A few minutes of very fine snow at about 0900 and again at about 2030
12/20/2010 11:59 PM M 0.4 M 4.0 M @ 1447: Nearly overcast, slightly windy + no precipitation; this is a precautionary measurement due to warming temperatures. At midnight all values were less due to melting during the afternoon and early evening.
12/21/2010 11:59 PM M 0.0 M M M
12/22/2010 11:59 PM M 0.1 M 3.5 M Overcast, windy + no precipitation; starting @ ~ 1600: very fine, freezing rain mixed with an occasional snowflake + lasted about 2 hours
12/23/2010 11:59 PM M T M 2.5 M Overcast, calm + very fine snow; brief flurry of fine snow earlier in the day
12/24/2010 11:59 PM M 0.3 M 3.0 M Overcast, calm + no precipitation; precautionary measurement at 1st station @ 1150 was 0.25",and the measurement @ 2348 was 0.125" after slight melting during the day
12/25/2010 11:59 PM M 0.1 M 3.0 M Overcast, calm + no precipitation; I think there was some minor melting during the day of the snow which fell overnight; a second, light dusting occurred late in the afternoon; this will be my last report until the 31st.
12/31/2010 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast, slightly windy + no precipitation (see Observation Notes for 010111)
1/1/2011 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast, windy + no precipitation; temperatures in the 40s and 50s, plus some rain, during the past several days have melted practically all traces of snow
1/2/2011 11:59 PM M 0.3 M 0.0 M Overcast, slightly windy + very light, fine flurry; practically all of the approximately 1/4" of snow we received today has melted before my measurements
1/3/2011 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast, calm + no precipitation
1/4/2011 11:59 PM M 0.6 M 1.0 M Overcast, calm + very fine, scattered snow; a trace after midnight (did not completely cover the deck); c1430: a light flurry with some peeks of filtered sun for a couple of hours
1/5/2011 11:59 PM M 1.9 M 2.5 M Overcast, slightly windy + no precipitation; precautionary measurements were made at 1513, and slight melting was observed at each station during the final observation
1/6/2011 11:59 PM M 0.2 M 2.0 M Overcast, calm + extremely fine snow
1/7/2011 11:59 PM M 0.2 M 1.5 M Overcast, calm + no precipitation; ~0.2" fell overnight, but melted during the day
1/8/2011 11:59 PM M 2.2 M 3.5 M Overcast, slightly windy + fine, occasional flurry; trace of snow overnight measured @ 0904 + melted during the day; squall began @ ~1430, snowed heavily for ~15 minutes, + ended in ~2 hours
1/9/2011 11:59 PM M 1.5 M 4.0 M Overcast, slightly windy + no precipitation; a precautionary measurement was made at 1152 and considerable melting was observed at each station during the final observation
1/10/2011 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 3.0 M Overcast, calm + no precipitation
1/11/2011 11:59 PM M 1.1 M 4.0 M Overcast, calm and fine, moderate snow
1/12/2011 11:59 PM M 5.1 M 9.0 M Overcast, calm + no precipitation
1/13/2011 11:59 PM M 1.2 M 8.0 M Overcast, almost calm + fine flurry; despite temperatures in the teens, plus a windchill, I think some of last night's snowfall melted during the day
1/14/2011 11:59 PM M 0.8 M 7.0 M Mostly clear, calm + no precipitation; precautionary measurements were made at 0936 (thin cloud cover, with some bluish openings in the northwest + very fine, infrequent snow), and complete melting was observed at each station during the final observation
1/15/2011 11:59 PM M 1.1 M 7.0 M Precautionary measurements were made at 1322-1325 due to partly cloudy sky and potential for partial melting. Some melting did occur, and those values are being reported.
1/16/2011 11:59 PM M 2.6 M 8.0 M Due to the possibility of partial melting, I took a precautionary measurement at 1203 (partly cloudy, slightly windy + no precipitation). Some melting did occur during the partially sunny mid-afternoon. Overcast (with a few thin spots), slightly windy + very fine, ocasional snowflakes during the final measurements. Therefore, new snowfall is the sum of my two averages (I checked for the possibility of rounding errors).
1/17/2011 11:59 PM M T M 6.5 M thin overcast (the moon is visible), moderately windy + no precipitation; trace amount after midnight

1/29/2011 11:59 PM M T M 5.5 M Overcast, calm and extremely fine, stray flurry (invisible without my flashlight); fine snowfall during most of the day, but continuous melting due to temperatures around freezing
1/30/2011 11:59 PM M 0.4 M 6.0 M Overcast, slightly windy and no precipitation; periods of lake effect snow throughout the day, plus sunshine during the afternoon from breaks in the clouds; melting occurred at three of my four stations, resulting in data from only one of them
1/31/2011 11:59 PM M 0.1 M 5.5 M Overcast, slightly windy and no precipitation; precautionary measurement made in late morning at station 1 (mostly sunny, slightly windy and no precipitation); all four stations were bare by midnight

2/13/2011 11:59 PM M M M 7.5 M Thin overcast (first quarter moon is visible), slightly windy and no precipitation; unable to report new snowfall due to being out of town for most of the day
2/14/2011 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 6.0 M Mostly clear, slightly windy and no precipitation
2/15/2011 11:59 PM M T M 5.0 M Thin overcast (gibbous moon is visible, with a hint of a ring), nearly calm and no precipitation; a brief, light flurry occurred at about 0930, with no accumulation
2/16/2011 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 5.0 M Clear (difficult to tell whether there is extremely thin, high haze because of a brightly lit sky from a nearly full moon), nearly calm and no precipitation
2/17/2011 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 3.0 M Overcast, slightly windy and no precipitation
2/18/2011 11:59 PM M 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast, strong winds and no precipitation; practically all of the snow has melted, except for accumulations from plowing and shoveling along roads and driveways (photos)
2/19/2011 11:59 PM M 0.6 M 0.5 M Overcast, windy and no precipitation; minor to moderate lake effect snow for most of the day, coupled with strong and gusty winds, yielded negligible accumulation
2/20/2011 11:57 PM M 0.8 M 1.0 M Overcast, nearly calm and light to moderate snow
2/21/2011 11:59 PM M 0.5 M 1.5 M Overcast, somewhat windy and no precipitation

2/24/2011 11:59 PM M T M 0.5 M Overcast, calm and no precipitation, but enough humidity to illuminate the beam of my flashlight; brief, occasional snow alternating with minor rain during mid- to late-morning, but no accumulation due to melting and the brief, light rain; more and somewhat larger, bare patches, although most of the ground is still covered
2/25/2011 11:59 PM M 5.6 M 6.0 M Overcast, windy and no precipitation; each of my four stations is about one foot off the ground and is therefore subject to the wind, which obviously was a problem for my measurements today; my measurements were 6", 2.5", 1.5" and 1.75", respectively, which simply were incorrect at stations 2-4; thus, I subtracted last night's snow cover depth from tonight's snow cover depth to calculate today's snowfall
2/26/2011 11:59 PM M 1.6 M 6.5 M Overcast, nearly calm and moderate snow of large flakes; a fine snow during the morning and parts of the afternoon failed to increase today's accumulation due to melting
2/27/2011 11:59 PM M 1.6 M 3.5 M Overcast, windy and no precipitation; precautionary measurements made at 0858-0903 because of anticipated melting (partly cloudy, slightly windy and no precipitation [tough to measure due to large snowflakes creating an irregular surface]); all four stations were bare by midday
