A narrow band of precipitation moved directly over the area from roughly 3:10am to 3:35am. Most of the time the precipitation was light, but for roughly 15 seconds, a few ice pellets were observed at the height of the shower around 3:25am. The ice was very flat and rectangular shaped with a diameter similar to that of the falling rain drops. The simple shape makes sense since the air temperature was 40-42 degrees Fahrenheit. No snow flakes could be distinguished since the drop sizes of the precipitation were small during much of the shower.

11/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.72 T M 0.0 M An area of light precipitation from roughly 9:20pm through the 11:00pm hour accumulated 0.01in of precipitation. The leading band of precipitation started off as snow and lasted for 2 to 3 minutes. There was no accumulation of snow. The snow began to mix with ice pellets (sleet) and for short times, there was only sleet falling. Rain begain to mix in with the sleet after 9:30pm. By 10:10pm, light rain was the dominant precip type, but sleet was still mixing. Radar from TPIT showed a brief period of higher DBZ between 10:45pm and 10:57pm. This correlates well with a period when only sleet was observed around 10:45pm. By 10:50pm, larger grains of ice were falling and had clumped together to give the illusion of a snow and sleet mix through 11:00pm. A coating of ice pellets accumulated on the snow board. By 11:15pm, the sleet mix had ceased, giving way to light rain which ended before midnight. A few rain drops also fell around 1:20am. Then a steady area of rain fell from 3:15am through 7:00an. which had accumulated 0.71in of rain.

By the 2:00pm hour, snow began to accumulate on some surfaces. A few snowflakes tapered off in the 5:00pm hour and a final snow accumulation of 0.3in was recorded on the snow board at 5:15pm. The western edge of the snow was parallel to a line from the NWS office in Pittsburgh to this CoCoRaHS station near Allison Park, PA, therefore my snow accumulation seems reasonable, given their 0.4in snow total. Melted snow in the gauge tallied 0.08in of water between 5:00am to 5:00pm. Light snow with the next trough began after midnight with only a coating of snow. By midnight, a Trace of melted freezing rain had fallen in the gauge. Intermittent freezing drizzle continued after midnight, with the expection of patches of light freezing rain, most notably around 2:15am. By 4:00am, a steady area of freezing rain moved into the region. During the entire event, there was a maximum of a coating (less than 1/10in) of ice accretion on untreated surfaces.
2/2/2011 5:00 AM 0.46 0.0 M 4.0 M A steady freezing rain continued before tapering to a freezing drizzle in the 9:00am hour. During the entire event, there was a maximum of a coating (less than 1/10in) of ice accretion on untreated surfaces and branches. Areas of light rain and drizzle continued throughout the late morning and afternoon hours, before an area of steady rain enveloped the area around 7:30pm. I checked, but did not empty, the gauge around 6:30pm and had noticed that about 0.08in of rain fell since 7:00am. About half of that fell as freezing rain in the morning hours since 7:00am. Sadly, the gauge slipped off and fell as I was about to read the amount at midnight. Therefore, I estimate an additional 0.25in of rain fell between 6:30pm to 12:00am. Steady rain continued until 1:30am with a few remaining light showers. This lead to 0.13in of rain since 12:00am.
2/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.3 M 3.5 M Scattered rain showers continued in the 5:00am and 7:00am hours. Nearby showers produced lightning, but no thunder was heard since I missed observing this brief event. However, non-thunderstorm wind gusts in the morning hours brought down large branches, including knocking the rain gauge off its holder. Because of this, precipitation that fell in the 5:00am and 7:00am hours was estimated to be 0.02in of rain. A light sleet shower around lasted from roughly 10:35am to 10:55am. Since the temperature was in the low 40s, the sleet melted as it fell. By the 11:00am hour, the precipitation had completed the transition to light snow. The occassional light snow began to accumulate around 2:00pm and continued into the overnight hours. A 10 hour new snow accumulation of 0.3in was recorded at 12:00am. This value had an additional 0.1in of snow added than was observed, because of the high winds. The ground was clearly covered with new snowfall in the late afternoon, but blew off the snowboard a few hours later. Melted snow and sleet in the gauge tallied 0.01in of water between 10:35am to 12:00am and Trace of water between 12:00am to 7:00am.

The light snow ended by 9:00pm, while flurries continued into the early overnight hours. A 6 hour new snow accumulation of 0.2in was recorded at 12:00am and a 7 hour new snow accumulation of Trace was recorded at 7:00am. Melting occurred very fast after a decent snow shower in the 11:00am hour, and so another measurement was made at 12:00pm. This measurement of 0.2in was slightly estimated, since much of the snow had melted off the board minutes after the shower ended. Light snow then tapered off in the 12:00pm hour with a few flakes lingering into the early afternoon. In addition, there were a few snowflakes during the early morning hours of the 13th.

I am not sure when the snow started to accumulate, but snow was observed on the ground in the 12:00pm hour. The precipitation remained rather steady during the morning hours, before a brief break to flurries in the 12:00pm hour. The line of thunderstorms was straddled directly over the area until roughly 7:30am. The steady light rain behind the line, with embedded thunder, continued until 8:10am. Since 6:00am, 1.11in of rain fell. This totaled to 1.49in of rain since midnight on February 28th. Additional sprinkles and drizzle in the 9, 10 and 11:00am hours amounted to only a Trace of rain.

At 1:50pm, I noticed the rain gauge fell over on its side, so I measured 0.15" of rain inside the fallen gauge at 1:50pm. Roughly 2 hours earlier, the gauge was observed to be upright. CAUTION: Precipitation may be innacurate, but since KPIT only reported 0.18in of rain between 5:00am and 2:00pm, it seems that this measurement is reasonable. It was lucky that the gauge fell in such a way that little to no previous rainfall was lost. As of midnight, an additional 0.31in of rain fell. 3/10/2011 5:00 AM 0.97 T M 0.0 M The area of steady precipitation continued from the 5:00am observation until the 6:00pm hour. At times, especially in the morning hours, the rain was mixed with snow. Although I did not observe the precipitation constantly, there may have been a period of only snow falling. Since temperatures remained above freezing, snow melted as it fell, but there may have been a minor snow accumulation greater than a Trace. After a brief break, the light rain became more scattered and continued from the 7:00pm hour through the next 5:00am observation. Melted snow and rain in the gauge tallied 0.63in of water between 5:00am to 12:00am and 0.34 between 12:00am to 5:00am.
3/11/2011 6:00 AM 1.12 2.2 M 2.5 M The bulk of the light rain ended in the 7:00am hour, but a few brief showers lasted through the 11:00am hour. This morning precipitation amounted to 0.19in of rain. Another area of showers appeared in the 1:00pm hour, before steady rain began again around 2:20pm. I observed the rain mixing with snow in the 10:00pm hour and then observed the rain transition to mostly snow by 10:25pm. By roughly 11:00pm, the snow began to accumulate on the grass and snow board. A wet 1 hour new snow accumulation of 0.7in was recorded at 12:00am. A wet 6 hour new snow accumulation of 1.5in was recorded at 6:00am. Melted snow and rain in the gauge tallied 0.79in of water between 12:00pm to 12:00am and 0.14in between 12:00am to 6:00am.
3/12/2011 5:00 AM 0.12 1.1 M 2.0 M A wet 8 hour new snow accumulation of 1.0in was recorded at 2:00pm. Because of some melting, this amount could be low, but it is a reasonable amount given 0.10in of melted snow in the gauge between 6:00am to 2:00pm. Additional snow accumulation through midnight, mainly in the early afternoon hours, amounted to 0.1in of snow. This snow after 2:00pm amounted to another 0.02in of melted snow in the gauge.

3/14/2011 7:00 AM T T M 0.0 M There was very light precipitation in the afternoon and evening hours. It appeared that the precipitation in the evening fell as rain, but I observed very light snow falling in the 4:00pm hour. During that time, I was roughly 1 mile north of my observing station in a church parking lot, so it can be assumed that a few flakes fell 0.7 miles W of Allison Park too. Temperatures were above freezing so any flakes melted as they fell. Very light precipitation, likely rain, continued to fall after midnight. Additionally, there may have been a few morning snow flakes before the 7:00am observation.

In addition to the occassional showers, there was some thunder after 3:00am. The majority of the rain was from an organized area of thundershowers between 3:45am to 4:30am. Rain totaled to 0.03in through 7:00am.

3/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.94 T M T M There was a brief shower in the 11:00am hour. Rain began to fall around 3:30pm with a thunderstorm. By 4:30pm, the rain temporarily ended with the first batch of storms. Light rain continued to fall later in the 4:00pm hour as a few weaker storms passed north of the area. By 5:00pm, the final round of storms and rain began to move through. The rain stopped around 7:15pm. In addition to the rain, I issued 4 CoCoRaHS hail reports. The first batch of hail began at 3:50pm and continued until 3:55pm. During this period, there was more rain than hail. The hail had diameters ranging from rice sized to 0.50in. The second batch of hail began at 4:06pm and lasted roughly a minute. During this batch, there was very little hail that only amounted to being rice sized. By 4:19pm, hail began again and lasted for 4 minutes. During this third batch, there was still more rain than hail. Most of the hail during that period was measured to be 0.25in in diameter. A final hail report was issued for intermittent hail between 5:01pm to 5:20pm. During this fourth round, hail began to fall at an average size of 0.2in diameter. Between 5:03pm to 5:06pm, only a few hail stones fell, but all of these hail stones were measured right around 0.75in in diameter. The hail did not start up again until 5:09pm with a few rice sized stones falling. After another brief break in the hail, the activity picked up between 5:13pm to roughly 5:20pm. During this final time period, mainly hail was falling with only a few raindrops. The diameters of the hailstones during that interval were consistent between 0.25in to 0.50in. The hail was falling for such a long time that it began to accumulate on the ground before tapering to a few rice sized hail stones. Rain and melted hail from the afternoon storms totaled to 0.93in of liquid. There was also some drizzle and mist after the 1:00am. There was some light snow in the morning hours that led to a T of accumulation and an additional 0.01in of liquid in the gauge.

3/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.21 0.4 M T M A few snowflakes began to fall around 1:00pm. Since the temperature was above freezing and even above 40 degrees at times, the snow melted as it fell. It is unclear if the snow changed to rain briefly, but likely mixed with rain in the afternoon. At times, the snow was heavy enough to accumulate on some surfaces, but continually melted. It is hard to figure out a snow accumulation, since I only measured a new snow accumulation of 0.4in on a snow board when the snow tapered off around 10:00pm. If hourly measurements were taken, the new snowfall could exceed 1.0in. Also, some drizzle occurred in the hours around midnight. By the 1:00am hour, grains of ice were observed before the transition to snowflakes once again. Rain and melted snow in the gauge tallied 0.19in of water between 1:00pm to 12:00am and 0.02in of water between 12:00am to 7:00am.
4/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 T M T M Snow began around 10:00pm and it appeared to mix with a few rain drops. Melted snow and rain accumulated to a Trace through midnight and amounted to 0.02in from midnight to 7:00am. Snow melted as it fell, so there was limited accumulation. There may have been a greater snow depth before my reporting time.
4/2/2011 9:00 AM 0.18 0.5 M 0.5 M Snow continued to fall, but melted due to temperatures above freezing. A few showers in the afternoon were mainly comprised of mainly snow flakes and crystals, but there were a few brief rain showers as the temperatures warmed later in the afternoon. Melted rain and snow amounted to 0.01in from 7:00am to 12:00am. Rain began to fall in the 3:00am hour, but transitioned to snow at an unknown time during the morning. By the 9:00am observation, a new wet snow accumulation of 0.5in was recorded, with 0.17in of rain and melted snow in the gauge. As was the case with the April 1st observation, the new snow accumulation may be higher than was observed due to melting.
4/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.08 T M 0.0 M There were a few scattered showers in the afternoon and evening hours. Most of the showers were mixed with snow and evenly briefly changed over to just snow during the heavier spurts of precipitation. Temperatures were above freezing, so there was no snow accumulation. The rain and melted snow did amount to 0.08in of liquid precipitation from 9:00am to midnight.
4/4/2011 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M FOR SOME REASON I KEEP GETTING AN ERROR WHEN I POST A COMMENT LONGER THAN 2 AVERAGE SENTENCES! A few drops of rain fell in the 4:00pm hour. From 6:00pm to 7:00pm, I was at a church event when a cloud-to-ground lightning strike grabbed my attention. Shortly after the strike, hail began to fall around 6:45pm and lasted roughly 5 minutes. This nearby location was at 40.586, -79.951, which is roughly 1.9 miles NNE of Allison Park, PA. This hail ranged from an estimated pea sized to 3/8 of an inch in diameter and was not accompanied with any rain. Around 6:55pm, another brief shower occurred but this time was purely graupel (snow pellets). Back at home, 0.7 miles west of Allison Park, PA, a thunderstorm passed by rapidly to our south with a few drops of rain at 7:45pm. In addition to the brief rain, a very limited number of hail stones fell, which were roughly 0.25in in diameter. All of this activity occurred when surface temperatures were in the low 40s. Considering the radar, I can't assume that the snow pellets reached the reporting location. Additionally, there were a few sprinkles after midnight.
4/5/2011 9:00 AM 1.26 T M 0.0 M A brief thundershower moved through between 11:58am to 12:15pm. A few sprinkles fell until the next round of showers and thunderstorms moved in around 2:30pm. These thundershowers lasted through 4:25pm, with the exception of a brief break between 3:35pm to 3:55pm. All of this activity lead to 0.24in of rain, before another area of thunderstorms and showers began at 5:10pm. These thundershowers were relatively weak and lasted until 6:15pm. After a 20 minute break in the activity, a large area of showers with embedded thunder continued until the cold front passage around 10:30pm. Post-frontal rain then fell through the overnight hours. As of midnight, 0.80in of rain fell, while an additional 0.46in of liquid fell through 9:00am. It appears the rain had mixed with and changed to snow at some point in the morning. Since temperatures were above freezing, there was likely only a Trace of accumulation.
4/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 T M 0.0 M Some light rain or light snow fell in the 9:00am and 10:00am hours. In addition, there were scattered periods of light snow during the afternoon hours, mainly after 3:00pm. The last snowflake fell shortly before sunset, but since temperatures were above freezing, there was no snow accumulation.
4/7/2011 6:00 AM 0.01 T M 0.0 M A few rain drops, snow crystals and snow flakes fell in the 8:00am, 9:00am and 10:00am hours. 7/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.21 0.0 M 0.0 M A bowing line of thunderstorms produced high winds that took down leaves, twigs & small branches with leaves on them. One of the trees hardest hit was a 10 foot tall elderberry tree in our yard. The main branches of the tree were top-heavy with smaller branches & berries, therefore 7 branches w/ branch diameters of roughly 1 inch snapped off at the base of the tree. I can estimate the maximum wind gusts to be near 50mph. Thunder was observed on July 11th. 0.21in of rain fell from 7:00am to Midnight.
