Another rather cool morning at 44 degrees under partly cloudy skys. Saw the WI river at Boscobel yesterday; have not seen it this high in the 12 years we have lived here!! The Mississippi didn't look that bad on Tues when I was in Prairie. I hope it doesn't go any higher at Cassville where my cousin has a home on the river. I can remember the mud in the basement from previous floods in the 80's. |

We are getting the much needed moisture!! Another balmy day at 56 degrees. No wind to speak of yet, but gusts of over 60mph predicted for later today. We discovered after SEC moved a couple of power poles that our back up "Guardian" did not engage due to a dead battery(6 yrs old). A stop at the local farm store on the way to Prairie for a snow plow part is in order!! SEC has been very reliable, but if the weather gets as bad as predicted, who knows what might happen?? Always nice to have power in most of the house during an outage. Can anything else around here fail?? |

Difficult to explain what occurred overnight! It appears that first it snowed, then warmed up and rained, then cooled off to 31 degrees at 0630 this AM. There was a thin coating of ice on one side of the tube bird feeders and the sidewalk was covered with what appeared to be large ice crystals, formed whan it rained on top of a light coating of snow. Hard to tell with all of the cat tracks. Definitely not a bit slippery!! The old snow pack appears to have shrunk probably due to the rain and rather warm temperatures. |

We were under blizzard warnings most of the afternoon. There was off and on rain and snow until about 4PM when it turned to all snow. There was about a quarter inch of ice under the snow on the board this AM. The trees (pines) are bent over almost to the ground under the weight of the new snow and there is a strong wind that will cause drifting here in the country. The AM temp was 19 degrees, but feels much colder with the wind!! The snow must have stopped shortly after 10 PM. |

It is like a winter wonderland outside with all the snow on the trees and the bright sunshine from an intense blue sky; the most beautiful I've seen in the 12 years we've lived here!! Since I just peeled off the thin layer of ice to get into the snow with the mearuring tube, the amount of moisture may be a bit on the short side. Much ado about nothing!! We certainly did not get the amount of snow predicted nor the severe conditions! There was anow and a fierce wind at 10:00, but the snow must have stopped shortly after that because one could see dog tracks made then. The snow was measured on the deck on the east side of the house, so the amound may not be exactly accurate. I usually use a snow board on the west side up in the parking lot which was mostly blown bare by the wind and the snowboard was entirely devoid of snow. There are some pretty hefty drifts and the snow is so packed I had trouble shoveling it from the sidewalk. If the groundhog had any sense at all he or she would curl up in their den for another 6-week nap. |

Warm again today at 25 degrees. Yesterday's temps got above freezing so we lost quite a bit of snow. After digging in the remaining snow (there is plenty) The best measurement for total snow on the ground averaged 16". Because of all of the wind, it is difficult to find a place that isn't drifter or has blown snow on it. On my trips to the ash pile the snow is well over my highest boots, actually more like knee high or more. The moisture content is a good educated guess because much of the pack is corn snow and the bottom 4" is more like ice crystals from the rain that came first. Also difficult to measure using a 12" tall cylinder!! |

A mixed bag of precip yesterday starting with large pieces of ice (sleet??) I,ve never seen before, then freezing mist or rain, then more sleet and finally after dark it began to snow! There was a thick crust of icy snow on top of the open bird feeder and the corn pan that I could not break with my fingers making measuring the moisture content of the old snow almost impossible. I could not insert the plastic snow tube for fear it would break! There is crust on top and on the bottom of the snow pack. The ice is 1/16 to 1/8" thick on the bare tree branches and there are many large limbs down from the white pines. The conifers are hanging low with the ice and snow in their branches. Although the morning temp was 30 degrees, a brisk NE wind made it feel much colder! |

We have a north facing wooded hillside that still (as of 3/16) had 5" of course corn snow with a water content of 1.9". The area near the house where I have been taking the measurements is bare except for near the sidewalk and driveway. There is much snow along the driveway from the plow and blower, but the driveway (nearly 1/4 mile long) has melted off since it is dark in color and warms in the sun. Our 15 acre field is roughly 1/2 snow covered with about 2" or so. Will go measure that and water content today if time permits!! |

My son spent 14 wks at Ft Sam in San Antonio in the summer of '81 and returned during what we perceived as a heat wave in Milwaukee. For about a month after he returned to WI he sat in a chair wrapped in a blanket because he was so cold. We thought it was just right!! And I thought no one cared about my daily ramblings!! Just got the e-mail dated Sept 3 (long story). Another beautiful day with a temp of 54 degrees under sunny skys. This past week has been a perfect prelude to fall with cool nights and warm, breezy days. There are signs of fall here in beautiful SW Wisc.; there is a hint of color on some of the hillsides and most of the summer plants are making a graceful exit from their growing season. A doe decided to gnaw on one of our pumpkins and the sunflowers are almost finished blooming. The birds can hardly wait for the delicious black seeds!! The lady at the orchard said the appples are at least two weeks behind this year. There were only two varieties available on Tues. when there are usually many more this time of year. |

The most rain around here in quite a while!! Much needed as things were getting very dry!! The AM temp was a cool 54 degrees under a mostly overcast sky. Many leaves down from the gusty north-east winds. The colors are probably about half right now, no doubt because of the extreme dry conditions around here!! Also, Sept has been unusually cool. |

At least the sun is shining for a change under a clear blue sky. The AM temp was 49 degrees. Lots of leaves down from the strong winds. I'm afraid the colors will not be so good this year since almost half of the trees have turned, and some of the leaves have already been blown off. |
