10/24/2010 7:00 AM 1.62 M M M M Finally a good storm overnight, raining lightly at obs., about a quarter inch in the morning and most at night with a good amount of lightning. No more dust!
10/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.32 M M M M Left over rain from the night before, ended at noon with a few sprinkles in the evening. Possible historic windstorm coming soon!
10/26/2010 7:00 AM 1.21 M M M M Wind probably caused lower readings of precip, possibly by 15% or more, rain horizontal at times and larger buckets caught more water than rain gauge did.
10/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Left over light showers and sprinkles, very windy with tree and power line damage reported just down the street.

12/12/2010 7:00 AM 1.58 8.5 1.16 9.0 1.33 Moderate snow with high wind at obs time but do not expect much more to measure today. Many branches down due to snow coated trees and wind. Lots of melting and compaction early and wind later makes for an almost certain underestimate of snow, but 8.5 inches is as close as I can get. High water content. Also .42 of rain before the snow melted much of existing cover before it snowed again.

Only 6 inches of drier snow on UW Madison campus where I work. Corrected snow depth down at my location after further review of neighboring properties.

A lot of snow pellets early on kept snow totals down and WEQ up. Some blowing and drifting. 1/2" was lake mich snow before main event. 1.49 total WEQ and 18.5" snow in January.
2/2/2011 5:00 AM 0.69 10.6 0.69 18.0 1.96 Concerned about power due to house-shaking winds so entered report early. Snow almost done here so won't be much additional tomorrow. Only one rumble of thunder as far as I know but wind was so strong it was hard to hear anything else. Think my WEQ might be low. 1.5 inches of total was lake effect in afternoon before main system. Snow never really stopped completely from yesterday due to lake showers.
2/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 0.01 17.0 2.00 Ending snowshowers early morn yesterday, 15.5 inch storm total included 2 inches of lake effect, 4.5 inches Mon-Tue and 9 inches with main storm. Fluffy lake effect squashed down with heavier snow and wind so total ground snow is lower than would be otherwise. Largest drifts on flat surfaces 3 feet (quite a few that size) and a 5 foot mouth level drift around garage. Roadside drifts of 10 feet or more tower over cars. Will likely revise water equivalent of total snow pack for next Monday's reading.

2/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 1.23 Snow melts more easily in the country when blizzards make for areas of little snow in between large drifts. Once the ground is bare in spots, it is easier for the land to absorb sunlight and warm further, eroding the drifted areas. In the city, the snowcover "locks in" and protects itself, creating its own little inversion of cold air.

2/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.98 1.7 0.98 2.0 0.98 About 1/2 inch of snow, then the rest was sleet and freezing rain. Only counted snow and sleet in snow accumulation but included rain and freezing rain that fell on top of it in core value since it did not run off. Freezing rain amounted to about .15 of ice on my car windows. Left over drifts from previous snow cover are still rather substantial and probably could release another 1/2 of water in addition to my core value if all melted at once.

3/8/2011 7:00 AM T T T 2.0 0.65 Just a trace at my house but a 1/2 inch of snow just 5 miles down the road. The usual dry air feed killed Lake Mills precip. Expect the same with the upcoming storm. However - the dry air feed may result in more snow than expected due to evap cooling.
3/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.44 3.7 0.44 5.0 1.03 As expected yesterday, dry air feed evap'd any rain and later turned it to snow. Madison had up to 6 inches as usual in the snow capitol of the state. 4/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.93 1.0 0.62 1.0 0.62 Ice storm with thunderstorms, small hail (see my 2 hail reports), freezing rain, light snow and lots of sleet. About 1 inch of sleet, some glazing on trees (lucky they are way behind as far as leaves this year), hail frozen into sleet piles and thus nicely preserved. Small hail was mainly cloudy/white while sleet was clear ice. Roads were extremely slippery.

Milw had 8th wettest April with almost twice this amount. 1.7 inches of snow, very cold month but below normal snow. 68.2 inches of snow during winter which is above normal, Madison had over 70 inches, Green Bay had over 90 inches in some nearby locations.

5/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Missed most of the overnight rain - surprised? Lake Mills, always the first to be dry slotted. Always has the thinnest/lightest portion of a precip area. Always the dryest northeast wind feed to eat into advancing precip area. Never in the pivot point. Madison, just a few miles west, totally the opposite.

5/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I will likely be using monthly zeros a lot this summer due to upcoming drought, which has now begun in the usual seed area (epicenter of drought) at Lake Mills. Grass already turning brown after I cut it. Everyone else has had a lot of rain except us - but watch out, drought will eventually hit everywhere in SC WIS.
6/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Dinky shower was on May 31 so final May total was a paltry 2.57. Strong blasting southwest winds raised a lot of dust. Not a good start for summer.

6/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Missed again, now at .17 in 13 days, very dry and warm so evap is high and grass is turning brown quickly. Many locations just to the south and east had heavy rain however.
6/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.52 M M M M That much hullaballoed storm was no match for Lake Mills where it transformed from a 70-90 mph wind, flooding rain and hail storm to a dinky little shower at our doorstep. Regenerated as soon as it passed my house. What sucked it dry? You ask me.....
