Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I was gone for eight days and as far as I know hubby didn't record any data. As it was, he didn't have anything to record since it didn't rain, mist, sprinkle or even lay down a layer of dew. Talked with men at church last night who have sold their entire herd of cattle due to no pasture.
10/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Again, nothing to report but sunshine and cool temps. I know we need rain but boy, these early October days are sure nice!
10/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another day of the same ol', same ol'. Hopefully though we will see rain this weekend.
10/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There's rain to my west, nothing here yet. I know we need rain but the western part of the state is much worse so for now, I'm wishing the rain on them.
10/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's already 71 degrees so we are in store for another pretty day. Trees are starting to change into their fall coats, what leaves there are to change. Probably 25% of the trees in my yard dropped their leaves in August.
10/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thankful to see that western Kansas got rain but am praying what few crops they've got left are not destroyed by uglier weather: hail and tornadoes. We are still dry.
10/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.30 M M M M Had enough of a storm at Strother Field (two miles north of me) that it blew a transformer and knocked out the electrity to the movie theatre, just as we were going in to watch "Courageous". Boo on you storm!
10/10/2011 7:00 AM 1.63 M M M M Goodness, I can't remember the last time I entered a rain amount that began with the digit "1"! Most of the rain came from the evening showers though it was wet out pretty much all day yesterday. SO WELCOME!
10/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We have not had a computer for over 2 weeks and in that time there has been only one weather related event to report. Sunday we had thick fog, which we drove through from our house to the Chestnut Street turn off. Immediately after we emerged from under the railroad bridge the fog stopped, just like there was an invisible wall or as if someone had cut it with a knife. Ark City was totally fogless.
10/27/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M Got rained on for .25 mile, at the most, while driving on the bypass; my kids said they were sprinkled on during recess. We got nothing at the house.
10/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M SOSO...same ol', same ol'. But, we couldn't ask for better weather for Arkalalah so I'm not complaining!
10/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Crisp fall morning but promising to be warmer by afternoon. So glad the snow is on the east coast and not here. I'm not ready for the white stuff yet.
11/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another warm day ahead of us...I'll take it!
11/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M According to channel 12, we are the warmest place in the state...30 degrees higher than Goodland. But, change is afoot and later today promises to be cold and miserable.
11/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Well, yesterday's weather event didn't amount to much here...a bit chilly but that's all. Most of this rain came down as mist.
11/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sent the 5-yo out to let the chickens out of the hen house and didn't notice until he was half way across the yard, with only socks on his feet, that he was running through frost. Poor boy!
11/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It feels like spring outside...sure not going to complain!
11/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What a bone-jarrin' time we had last night...first time I've felt an earthquake in Kansas! By the way, is there going to be a calendar this year?
11/8/2011 7:00 AM 3.12 M M M M Was in Wichita most of yesterday where it poured hard, there was minor street flooding and it seemed to me they were noticeably cooler. We did not have flooding in Ark City but we have standing water in one area of our yard for the first time in years. Also, felt another small quake around 9 PM and blamed it on the cat so our children would not be frightened. :)
11/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.14 M M M M What I've recorded fell as a heavy mist, all day yesterday. A perfect, soaking rain. The fields are waterlogged, for the first time in months.
11/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Brisk and bright out...perfect fall day. Speaking of fall, this week's rain is bringing down our leaves. But because of the drought, the sycamore leaves are easily half the size they normally are so there won't be as much to gather for compost.
11/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report except bright sunshine. Ha, is there such a thing as dark sunshine?
11/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 'Tis a perfect day to get late season yardwork done, as well as clean out the hen house and rabbit barn in preparation for the coming winter.
11/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The sun shining through what leaves are left was all rosy this morning...pretty. It's supposed to be nearly 70 degrees this afternoon...pretty awesome!
11/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Last warm day for a while...boo-hoo.
11/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The bald eagles are back. That's always my first sign that winter is almost here.
11/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Had to laugh this morning when the spring chickens ran out their hen house and found frost under their feet. They all ran to the concrete floor of the barn and stood puzzling over what they'd just encountered. Wait 'til they see snow.
11/20/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M I'm pretty sure that on the way to church this morning there was a very fine mist on the van windows. Even with the 3" of rain we got a few weeks ago, the ponds beside the bypass are the lowest I have ever seen them.
11/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing of importance to report since our thermometer no longer works. Oh yeah, fired up the woodburning stove last night - that felt glorious.
11/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.41 M M M M It's already warmer now than it was all day yesterday so when I went out to check the gauge, I didn't need a jacket. Slightly foggy; gauge tube completely clouded with condensation.
11/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Listen up class...the words for today are "frosty" and "foggy".
11/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We were in western Pawnee County for Thanksgiving where we witnessed a rare thing...rain. That area of the state is pitifully dry and makes our area look practically tropical.
11/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sun's out and life is good! (Hey, might as well be positive...)
11/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looking at the next week's forecast, this is the last decent day for a while so this is THE day to get outdoor chores done.
12/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Am not looking forward to this weekend's snow and colder temperatures. Suddenly, summer is not seeming so bad after all.
12/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
12/3/2011 7:00 PM 0.98 M M M M This very welcome rain started last night and continued until midafternoon. And with the temperature in the upper 40's I was able to get the kids out to play and get rid of excess energy.
12/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M By reading the opening map, our area got some rain to report this morning but I did not. What we got yesterday (.98") is still in the fields and ditches. At 4:30 the temperature is going down. :(
12/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Boy, it's cold out there! Guess winter is coming after all.
12/6/2011 7:00 AM T 0.1 0.01 M M My son took several measurements of the snow and the most he reported was 1/8". I get so tickled each "first snow" at the new hens, who've never seen that frozen white stuff underfoot...they try to fly over it. The children were very disappointed school wasn't called off. The almanac and this AMs weatherman are both saying the same thing: drier than normal and above average temperatures for Dec.- Feb.
12/7/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M Most of the snow is gone, thanks to the sun which came out of hiding yesterday. Cold enough the last three days that I'm having to switch out frozen rabbit bowls several times a day. This is going to get old.
12/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We still have snow in the sheltered areas of our yard like in front of the back porch and in the shelter belt.
12/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The only snow left in my area is across the street in the deep shade of my neighbor's shelter belt.
12/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M In the fall we say the frost is on the pumpkins. What do you say in winter? The frost is on the dead grass? Not quite as poetic.
12/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looking at the opening map of the US it's so good to see the parched state of Texas finally getting moisture!
12/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M The little amount I recorded fell mostly last night during a 4-H club Christmas party and as we were looking at Christmas lights.
12/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M What I recorded as a rain amount might just be condensation or the results of a heavy fog because the grass is wet underfoot, it's not as wet as if we'd gotten a rain.
12/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.28 M M M M The rain that came yesterday was anything from a fine mist to a light rain. Judging by the radar, we'll be getting more rain by noon. And wow, it feels like late spring outside...weird for a week before the start of winter!
12/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M I really thought we'd gotten more than .20" but I'm not going to argue with an official rain gauge.
12/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like it's going to be a pretty day...hardly a cloud in the sky.
12/19/2011 7:00 AM T M M M M If my 8-yo DD has her prayers answered, we will get 12' of snow out of this event instead of the "snow desert" the GMA weatherman reported is occuring in the NE. Just began sprinkling here within the last 30 minutes or so.
12/20/2011 7:00 AM 2.54 M M M M This rain began at about the same time I was making yesterday's entry and unbelievably, is still coming down! In the afternoon we had thunder and when I went to pick up my kids, several streets had fast flowing water overflowing the ditches. If it had been cold enough this would have been a mammoth snow! As it was, it just make my Polish rooster look like the devil incarnate. Ha!
12/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.14 M M M M It's warming up already...did chores without a heavy coat. Can this really be nearly winter?
12/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Was in MO for 6.5 days but am pretty sure there was no rain to record. There sure isn't any in the foreseeable future.
12/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I am really enjoying the above normal temperatures but at this rate, with no moisture in the forecast, what rain we got a few weeks ago isn't going to last long.
12/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report here except that the moon still shone last night and the sun hasn't burned up yet today. Thank goodness huh?
12/31/2011 7:00 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M Good-bye 2011, you hot, dry little stinker! Welcome 2012...what do you have up your sleeves for us?
1/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warm and windy enough here today that the kids and their dad flew kites.
1/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Daughter reports that there was frost on the ground when she ran to let the chickens out of their house. I will vouch that it's cold.
1/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I totalled 2011's total rainfall and it was around 26", give or take an inch or so for all the T's and errors. So why are the pastures nearly dead and entire herds are being sold off? If it continues to be as warm as it will be this week, with no rain in sight, 2012 may be starting off on the dry side too.
1/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Saw on the news last night that KS is not the only part of the US that is experiencing a "snow drought". Actually, the weatherman said parts of western KS has gotten more snow than some of the Great Lakes states.
1/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report except clear, blue skies and continued above normal temperatures.
1/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Record temperatures were broken all over the state yesterday. Is this related to oour extreme summer?
1/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another pretty morning to be alive in.
1/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There must have been frost out this morning because oldest son said the grass was "crunchy" when he went to let the chickens out of their house.
1/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This will be the last above normal temperature day here for a while. There has not been a normal temperature day even once in January. Am I complaining? Nay!
1/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We're finally going to get real January temperatures, for a few days at least. There was a "maybe snow" teaser in the forecast. However, if it does snow here I doubt it will stick...it's just been too warm.
1/12/2012 7:00 AM T 0.2 T M M Our snow fell hard and fast, all in about an hour, blowing sideways. At least in Winfield it was slick on the roads...I don't know about Ark City since I don't live in town. How do we record "total snow and ice on ground at observation time" if it's less that 1/2"? Does anything less than that not count?
1/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M From now until we replace our broken 10-year old computer, I will only be able to report from the public library. My reports will probably be multi-day ones...not like we're getting much to report anyway.
2/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.54 M M M M I'm baaaack! We finally got our computer replaced and so for now on I should be making daily reports again. To my knowledge, in the weeks I was gone we did not get any measurable moisture.
2/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.67 M M M M The total rainfall in this last event was about 1.21", very needed and appreiciated!
2/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cold and frosty today with a chance of the white stuff tomorrow. There's been so little snow this year that I've forgotten what it looks like.
2/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I'm crossing my fingers that we'll get some of the forecasted snow. But, every map I've seen has our part of the state getting nothing.
2/8/2012 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M We got .07" more than the official reading at Winfield and we'll take it! The forecast for the next three months is much of the same: above average temperatures and below average rain.
2/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A year ago today we had -17 degrees and 7 or 8 inches of snow; today it's going to be in the 40s. Guess which one I prefer?
2/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.05 1.5 0.50 1.5 0.50 I don't know how much snow we had last night after it quit falling because it's been melting since then. There was a steady drip, drip, drip from the eaves all night and it hasn't stopped yet.
2/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.5 0.02 Today, sitting at Chipotle in Wichita, I told the kids, "Look! There's no snow in Wichita." I didn't notice much until we got as far as Udall. Cold here; grateful for a woodstove full of hedge wood.
2/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.50 5.0 0.40 5.0 0.40 Depending on where you take the measurements, we got between 4" and 7", not counting the drift we normally get between the chicken house and shed. Most of the schools in Cowley County are out of school so the kiddos have had a blast this morning. With it being a balmy 31 degrees outside, they played in the snow for over an hour before deciding they'd rather be inside with bowls of popcorn.
2/14/2012 7:00 AM T M M 4.0 0.55 We had random flakes of snow and occasional bouts of mist yesterday but no accumulation. The kids tried building a snowman with the first snow and it was just not "right"; later, after it had melted a tad, they tried again and made one 5' tall!
2/15/2012 7:00 AM T M M 2.0 0.25 Thick fog this morning with a visibility of less than 1/2 mile. Most of our snow has melted, especially over night. There's probably 25% of our yard covered with snow. I gave "Trace" as the measureable rain because there are droplets of condensed fog on every section of our garden fence.
2/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M All day yesterday there was something coming out of the sky: fog, mist, drizzle, rain, etc. In the afternoon I was in Winfield where the sun was out; in Ark City there was still thick fog. The only snow left in my yard is the mutilated remains of the snowman. I don't think I'll probe him! :)
2/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M This may not be exactly correct since when I went out to measure it, the inner tube was loose. I poured what was in the bottom of the outer tube into the inner one and took the reading of that.
2/19/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Light frost this morning but barely any need to wear a coat to church. I feel like I should be breaking out the spring duds...
2/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not much to report today except that it's a typical late-February day, without the typical bitterly cold temperatures.
2/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M Yesterday's weather was in a word...wild! In town there was about five minutes of marble-sized hail that covered the ground thick then melted just about as quick. It got so dark that the street lights came on then by 6 PM the sun was back out. At home (north of town) there must have been more wind because we had limbs down.
2/22/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The roses in my backyard are putting on leaves already. And with today's temperature expected to be up around 70, the little leaves are likely to grow even more.
2/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was absolutely beautiful so I took advantage of the warm temperature to hose off the back porch.
2/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frosty and chilly earlier but comfortable now as I'm loading up the van, getting ready to go to a rabbit show.
2/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing interesting to report here except that the grass is starting to green up...what little of it there is.
2/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Should have rain and maybe hail to report tomorrow since we are expected to get a storm later today.
2/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M Toward the end of the storm spotter meeting last night a storm blew through and damaged buildings within .25 miles of the theatre. In our yard there was branches down but no other damage that I know of. Small hail too but I can't say what size exactly because I was standing in the theatre lobby watching it bounce around.
3/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny and breezy this morning with wonderfully warm 70s on their way...yee-hah!
3/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Gray and overcast this morning, cooler than yesterday.
3/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report here but sweet sunshine, unlike most everyone east of Kansas. This coming storm season is going to be awfully long if this is happening already. :(
3/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Such a pretty day here today! Couldn't help but notice snow falling around the reporter in IL, talking about tornado damage. Something ain't right about that picture.
3/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Is this really just March 5th? Our weather is wacked for sure when it's predicted to be nearly 80 degrees in western Kansas!
3/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Around here the trees are turning green and beginning to bloom. As pretty as this is, it's much, much too early for leaves and flowers.
3/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Is there another word for "windy" that I could use? Hung laundry out yesterday and watched the sheets blow parallel to the ground.
3/8/2012 7:00 AM 1.31 M M M M It's been raining all night and our backyard is waterlogged. When I was taking the gauge apart earlier, to read it, I'm pretty sure it was sleeting.
3/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M We got sleet here for a full two hours and the last of the piles just melted in my yard this morning.
3/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.21 M M M M It's been raining or misting all day, the kind that we desperately needed last summer.
3/12/2012 7:00 AM T M M M M This week our temperatures will be 20 degrees higher than normal which will be nice for us humans but bad for the plants, especially if we get a late freeze.
3/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day ahead of us...I'm getting the urge to plant flowers and spring clean.
3/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Still too wet to use the garden tiller to plant wildflowers. That's a wonderful "problem" to have!
3/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our pear tree is in full bloom right now...so pretty.
3/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The grass was wet when I went to let the chickens out of their house but not even a trace was in the gauge. Must have been from a heavy dew.
3/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No moisture, other than a stray raindrop yesterday, either the 17th or 18th. But, according to the weathermen, we're going to get rain tonight and tomorrow.
3/19/2012 7:40 PM 1.53 M M M M
3/20/2012 7:30 PM 0.15 M M M M
3/21/2012 11:30 PM 0.40 M M M M Saw the Neosho River out of its banks at Chetopa while driving back from Arkansas. Lots of localized flooding in Missouri too.
3/22/2012 7:00 PM 0.40 M M M M Yard is standing in water and the grass is the greenest I've seen it in at least a year. Guess I'll be mowing this summer.
3/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M The ground is very saturated right now so if we get anymore rain it's just going to run off.
3/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Most likely I will get to mow the "back 40" for the first time this season today. What a difference from last year when I mowed three times total!
3/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Absolutely gorgeous here today!
3/26/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our yard is in full bloom: red buds, lilacs, hen bit and dandelions. Others, apples and blackberries, are ready to open.
3/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Bright and sunny with just enough cool in the air that the kindergartener went to school with long sleeves on.
3/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew underfoot this morning when I took the trash out but nothing in the gauge.
3/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Have been finding ticks on my cats and kids for about two weeks now...what on earth is the "real" tick and flea season going to be like if it's this bad in late March? Guess it's time to buy another flock of guineas.
3/30/2012 7:00 AM T M M M M Had a brief sprinkle last night with lightning to the north and south
4/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Light fog this morning but near record-high temps predicted for the afternoon. Guess I'll spend the time between church services planting seeds so the rain coming Monday and Tuesday will be put to good use.
4/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Record-breaking heat in the western part of the state yesterday and 87 here...very weird for April Fool's Day.
4/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What happened to all the rain we were supposed to get yesterday? Well, I'm thankful western Kansas got some even if we didn't.
4/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M I really thought we got more rain than this but hey, I'm not going to complain 'cause you never know when the faucet in the sky will go dry.
4/6/2012 7:00 AM T M M M M There was a fine mist most of yesterday, not even enough to turn on the wipers. Coming home from work, on the south side of town, my husband reported that it rained on him.
4/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.70 M M M M Rained hard all morning then off and on through the day.
4/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thick fog with visibility at .25 mile or less. According to Channel 12 news, we are already ahead of average rain for the year and with five out of the next seven days predicted to rain, this might be the year Ark City floods. We have not had a flood since 2007 or '08.
4/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Was at a 4-H meeting east of Ark City last night when there was a hail storm of pea size ice balls. On the way home the road were steaming and the ditches were flowing fast. No hail here though.
4/11/2012 7:00 AM T M M M M It began sprinkling at about 7 AM; oldest son swears it sprinkled overnight though how he'd know that while he was sleeping is beyond me.
4/12/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M So good to see western Kansas finally getting real rain!
4/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M The opening map has rain levels clear up to 80"! I don't think even Hawaii or Washington gets that much.
4/14/2012 7:00 AM 1.77 M M M M Anyone else having trouble with CoCoRAHS this morning?
4/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Super bright out, definitely the calm after the storms.
4/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hopefully we can dry out a bit before the next round of rain. Yesterday I mowed for the 4th time which is once more than I mowed for all of 2011.
4/19/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Beautiful day!
4/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
4/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like it's going to be another beautiful day. Hung the newly washed, newly filled hummingbird feeders earlier this week and am waiting on the first little hummer to visit.
4/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavy dew is burning off in this brilliant sunshine; very warm temperatures expected the next two days.
4/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Too busy to report yesterday but both then and today are"0.00" in the rain category.
4/26/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hotsy-totsy yesterday my grandmother would have said.
4/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At about 8 AM there was a sizzle and crackling sound at the exact same time as a LOUD boom of thunder so lightning struck very close to home. Scary!
4/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.95 M M M M
4/30/2012 7:00 AM 0.72 M M M M 1.67" of rain in two days and that does not include the "Trace" I was going to record Saturday. These soaking rains and warmer-than-normal temperatures has us already eating mulberries, mowing weekly and watching the blackberries to see when they will be perfectly ripe.
5/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.71 M M M M Lots of banging and crashing around here last night, especially to the south, but no real weather here...thankfully. I don't mind rain but Oklahoma can keep their tornadoes!
5/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We have a break in the rain for a few days which hopefully will give the waterlogged fields time to dry out before the next round.
5/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavy dew on the grass but otherwise, not a cloud in the sky. Supposed to be hot and humid again.
5/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Watched a fascinating scene this morning. Our two broody hens led their batch of chicks out onto grass, heavy with dew, then showed them how to drip the droplets of water off of each grass blade. I didn't even know chickens could do this.
5/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cool and cloudy; makes me wish I hadn't put the kids' sweaters away so quickly.
5/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavy dew and another light jacket morning for the kids on their way to school.
5/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
5/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report except that the weather was cooperative for the kids' school's field day. Not too cool or too hot.
5/12/2012 7:00 AM T M M M M I'm not sure if what we got briefly yesterday afternoon could even be classified as a trace. If I hadn't been outside at that time I wouldn't have known it had sprinkled.
5/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like we'll be having a terrific week of bright, sunny and warm days.
5/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report but that the sun did come up and is shining brightly. :)
5/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another great day to wake up to!
5/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 73 degrees already and gorgeous outside. We are however, using the soaker hoses under a thick layer of mulch to keep our vegetable garden alive.
5/19/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's evident now that we haven't had rain in a while beause I won't have to mow today. I think if I did the mower would just be blowin' dust.
5/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Not much more than a trace to report and certainly not enough to keep us from watering the garden. Still, I'm thankful for what we did get.
5/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 61 degrees and while I have the windows cracked open for fresh air, I'm thinking a long-sleeved shirt would feel good.
5/22/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nary a cloud in the sky
5/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another pretty day but since we haven't had rain in a while, it'll be a day full of watering fruit trees and the garden
5/31/2012 7:00 AM 1.09 M M M M This is just enough rain that I'll have to mow. But you know what? I'm not complaining!
6/1/2012 7:00 PM 0.06 M M M M Was going to report a total of 0.00 at 7AM and didn't get around to it, then it started sprinkling at noon so I'm glad I didn't. Got enough off and on all afternoon to send the chickens to the back porch, shivering and confused. In the low 60's all day.
6/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M With a single LOUD clap of thunder the kids, who were sleeping under the stars, came flying into the house in a dither. The nearly trace amount of rain I'm reporting fell then as well as in a scant sprinkle this afternoon.
6/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Ark City must be in a rain-free hole 'cause while every station around us is reporting rain, we've recieved nothing.
6/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Gettin' hot...just like it's supposed to in late spring.
6/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
6/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another gorgeous day in the 'hood!
6/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Have been very busy the last three or four days so haven't reported the 0.00 rainfall we've recieved. Sure saw some awesome clouds last night, on the way home from an entomology picnic.
6/12/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The roadsides are starting to look dry again and what little part of my yard that has put up grass hasn't had to be mowed now in a month. Thankfully we do not have last year's extreme heat to go along with less-than-abundant rain.
6/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The nights are cooling down wonderfully which makes sleeping a dream...
6/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M LOVE these cool nights!
6/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.54 M M M M The first things that greeted me when I went out to read the gauge was a pair of water-logged Birkenstock sandals...grrrr!
6/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M So glad that we have had ZERO 100 degree days this year. What a difference than 2011 where we had already had six such days and many more ahead.
6/19/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nuttin' to report at all 'cept it's beinin' to feel like summer
6/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.14 M M M M This little shower came with a few rumbles of thunder. I really enjoy sleeping when it's raining, especially if it's not blowing and I can open the windows to hear the rain and smell the fresh air.
6/22/2012 7:00 AM T M M M M Got a little sprinkle, just enough to turn on the windshield wipers once or twice, about midmorning yesterday.
6/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M HOT and dry already...and we just had a bit of rain this week. Was about 98 degrees at 5:30 (NWS) and 101 (our thermometer).
6/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Just in case we forgot what 100+ degrees felt like...IT'S BAAAACK! Oh, and it's dry too.
6/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M You know you're hunting for something positive when you look at the next week's forecast and are thankful it's supposed to get to "only" 102 degrees.
6/26/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Perfect temperature right now of 76 degrees. Should be outside NOW doing chores instead of waiting 'til it's boiling hot.
6/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain in the forseeable future and since we just go sod laid yesterday, guess what I'll be doing?
6/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The only moisture in our backyard is from the sprinkler, which we are running two to three hours a day to keep new sod alive.
7/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothin' but sunshine and stars to report.
7/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M So nice to have a break in the 100 degree days yesterday. But, it looks like they're back today.
7/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Saw a chance of rain in next week's forecast so let's all cross our fingers that someone in the state does get rain. We all need it!
7/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Perfect night to watch fireworks and enough of a breeze that we weren't breathing smoke and ash the whole time.
7/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Counting down the hours 'til the predicted break in temperatures.
7/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.76 M M M M This rather quick storm brought two things: much needed rain and a lightning strike to one of our sycamores. There's a strip of bark at least three feet long blown off of it at the base.
7/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The little bit of rain probably saved our peony plants since I wasn't going to water them. They perked up amazingly.
7/12/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
7/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like things are heating up again this weekend. It is summer after all so what can we expect?
7/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M This little bit of moisture came at night. We're thankful for it but we'll still have to water the new sod.
7/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 94 degrees at 3 PM so not too bad a day
7/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M "Cool" enough yesterday that I didn't even put ice out for the rabbits. Guess I'm saving it all for later this week when it's supposed to be 104 or so.
7/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I think the meteorologists are getting tired of the forecast, which is more of the same: above average temperatures and no rain in sight.
7/19/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Even with regular watering, our newest blackberry plants are beginning to show the stress of the unrelenting heat so last night we built little tents for each plant.
7/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Thankful for both the rain and the reduction in temperature!
7/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The next two days are supposed to be scorchers...hope everyone in SE Kansas is ready.
7/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report except sun and heat.
7/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Crossing our fingers that we are in the 30% of those predicted to get rain Thursday!
7/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Come on rain! Come on rain! You can do it...give us some relief from this drought!
7/26/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Watching yesterday's replay of the radar it was almost like there was a template on top of our county. Every single storm fell apart before it got here, went around or split. SO, we did not get a drop of rain...just a few teasing claps of thunder.
7/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The song that keeps playing in my head is the one from the 80s..."The Heat is On, The Heat is On", etc.
7/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No chance of rain in the forseeable future and no break in the heat the kiddos starting the fair on Tuesday. SIGH.
7/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was 112 degrees at 4:30...what other word can I use than H.O.T.?
7/30/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I'm glad other parts of Kansas have gotten rain but sure wish it would have gotten to the southern half! We are roasting down here.
8/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For the first two days of our fair it's supposed to be nearly 110 degrees. NOT looking forward to this at all.
8/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Honestly, I nearly cried this morning when I saw a long-rang forecast and there were two days that did not have three digits. What a relief!
8/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.21 M M M M Rain, rain, sweet rain. (Part of this may be from Friday morning...maybe .01 or a trace.)
8/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The word on the street, at church and at the fair yesterday was how grateful folks were that we finally got rain and that the heat has broken.
8/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I think the worst of our heat is over...thank God! But, the drought lingers on as by evidenced by the amount of leaves in our front yard. It looks more like October instead of August.
8/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Am back from a long trip to NE and SD where we hardly saw any green at all. The United States is hurting folks!
8/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It looks like we may finally get rain later this week...let's pray it actually comes.
8/22/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M My thermomter must be in the sun because it's reading 86 degrees...no way is it that warm already!
8/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M SO nice to have cooler weather...makes me smile!
8/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was nothing in the gauge at 7 AM but since it's sprinkling right now, I'll have something to report tomorrow.
8/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M I know I'm not supposed to complain but only .13" of rain? That barely stirred up the dust!
8/26/2012 7:00 AM 3.20 M M M M This very needed rain came in several waves with the heaviest rain later in the day. On the way to church this morning the fields didn't even look wet so evidently, the rain soaked right in.
8/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavy dew for the first time in months.
8/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny and not a cloud in the sky.
8/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I hope we do get rain off of Hurrican Isaac, even an inch or two would help.
8/30/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We may get some of the outer bands of Isaac tomorrow and Saturday...
8/31/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The only way to be assured leftover Isaac rain will get to us is to water our garden and the blackberry plants.
9/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M My 12-yo son claims it rained for a "minute or two" but since I didn't see it, or any evidence of that rain, I'm not reporting anything. The outer bands of Isaac were clearly visible from Ark City but amounted to nothing.
9/2/2012 7:00 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M Got up to between 104 and 107 degrees here and boy did it ever feel like it! Got some good pictures of just how low the Arkansas River has gotten for CoCoRaHS.
9/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Expected to be very hot again and I have to say, I'm so tired of this summer!
9/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 107 degrees here yesterday and supposed to be over 100 again today. With the heat and 3" of rain we got a week ago, I will get to mow later this week, the first time I've mowed since late spring.
9/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For hours yesterday there was thunder and menacing clouds all around Ark City and yet as far as I know, we did not get a drop of rain!
9/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The weathermen are nearly giddy over the big change coming in the weather!
9/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For days now, places all over Kansas have gotten rain, and not us. I'm jealous.
9/8/2012 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M I was ready to give ya'll a "we didn't any rain" pity party but lo and behold, we actually did. However, in Ark City proper, I guarantee they got more than we did because when I drove out of town, at about 5'ish last night, water was flowing freely in the streets. However, right about the McDonalds/Walgreens intersection the pavement was dry. Weird.
9/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very pretty day today: 81 degrees and nary a cloud in the sky.
9/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another pretty weekend weather wise and got to mow Saturday for the first time since midspring.
9/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heard that 2012 was the 3rd hottest summer on record. Is that true? Sure felt like it!
9/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Once again, Ark City did not get rain while most of the rest of the state did. Here's hoping we do, sometime today.
9/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.73 M M M M It rained nearly all day yesterday and well into the night, low and slow.
9/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The only thing in my rain gauge this morning was a jumping spider. Heavy dew on the ground which makes it wet for the bantam Cochin chickens, with their feathered legs.
9/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M I betcha the amount I recorded is strictly from condensation, similar to the heavy dew I walked through on the way to the gauge. First chilly morning since early spring; feels great!
9/19/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 59 degrees and sunny
9/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like the dry spell is back.
9/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M I think what's in the gauge has accumulated over the weekend, instead of only overnight. The kids camped out Friday night and reported that early Saturday morning there was a LOUD crack, a BRIGHT flash of light then it "just poured for hours". (Later talked to an adult at church and he said it rained for maybe two minutes total.) Then, early Sunday morning we got another sprinkle. (edit: observation date changed from 9/24 to 9/23 to match surrounding stations and comments above. P.G.)
9/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today's supposed to be the warmest day for the week, before rain moves in. It was about this time last year when we got three days of slow, gently rain - bring it on!
9/26/2012 7:00 AM T M M M M I'm recording a "trace" of rain since it began raining here between 6:30 and 6:45 AM, and was accompanied by heavy lightening. It was raining "cats and dogs" shortly after 7 AM which was a blessed sound!
9/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.54 M M M M Little by little, we'll beat this drought!
9/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Moderate fog this morning so most likely, the .02" I recorded was simply condensation inside the gauge.
9/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavily overcast earlier today and pleasant now (4:00 PM)

1/12/2012 1/16/2012 7:00 AM 5 0.00 M M Not much to report except maybe a little front Saturday morning and 10-20 degrees above normal temperatures. Lord help us...if this was summer we'd be well above 100 degrees again.
6/16/2012 6/18/2012 7:00 AM 3 0.15 M M I believe it was early Saturday morning that we got this little rain...just didn't have time to enter it.
8/8/2012 8/19/2012 7:00 PM 12 0.39 M M Was gone on vacation and this is what was in the gauge when we got back. Probably had some evaporation going on so not very accurate.
