After morning rain ended yesterday, rain resumed in mid-afternoon and became intermittently somewhat heavy through the evening with gusty winds after 7pm, before ending before or around midnight. I did not see snow mixing in but was not watching carefully, definitely there was still rain falling near the end and if any snow did fall, it melted without whitening the ground or car roofs. I did not hear thunder or see lightning (which may have accompanied the cold frontal band south of DC during the evening; the morphed diffused northern end of that band moved northeast across the southern and eastern DC suburbs)

12/29/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 2011 total 50.02" of which 21.78" came during the two months from Aug 2 to Oct 2. This 2-month total is very close to the 100-year return estimate for the area (http://hdsc.nws.noaa.gov/hdsc/pfds/pfds_map_cont.html?bkmrk=dc). There were two typical wet periods: 4.55" in 3 weeks Dec 7-28 and 3.60" in 12 days Feb 28-Mar 11. The remaining almost-9-months totaled only 20.09". Thus, despite a high annual total, overall it was a very dry year aside from two typical wet periods and a two-month period of extraordinarily heavy rain.

Returned home 6:30pm to a half inch covering all grassy surfaces and cars, nothing on pavement - took measurement against smooth cold metal surface (yard lights lining front walk) as the gap between the ground and the bottom of snow caught in the grass made it too difficult to get a reasonable measurement of just the snow layer in the grass. Actual snow fall probably was higher, as there certain was some melting. By morning, all had melted, bare ground.

1/21/2012 12:00 PM 0.29 2.0 0.29 1.5 0.25 Snow was falling light to brief periods of moderate at 1:00 am and changed to mostly sleet after 2am at which time I had 1.5 inches on surfaces such as my hail pad and trash carts (plastic, not next to the house) and 2 inches in the grass because of an empty layer below the accumulation (it got caught in the grass and did not reach the bottom of the grass). At that point the covering was all snow. In the morning, the sleet accumulated ice granules with a crust layer of somewhat less than 1/4 inch, around 3/16 inch (measured, rather uniform). The crust compressed the snow under it so the total depth was 1.5 inches rather uniform, some places only around 1". The gauge had a little bit of glazing, so the precip must have changed to freezing rain before ending. No precip falling at obs time nor later as I cleaned my walk and driveway.

Without a chilled snowboard, I cannot determine the snowfall. The snow quickly ended and then additional snow fell overnight, completely covering the ground with a dusting. Gauge may have missed some of the blowing snow, as some may have blown around the gauge. 2/25/2012 12:30 PM 0.31 M M M M Rain began before 1:50pm as heavy storms passed to the south. I attempted to intercept but made a bad decision and got stuck in traffic (where traffic cameras before I left showed traffic not heavy and certainly not slowing or jammed) while storms passed over lower southern Maryland. I managed to get to Richmond exactly in time to see ice cubes falling without any rain, then hit the wall of water. The front plus outflow boundary sagged all the way down to just north of Richmond, with temperatures (car thermometer) in the upper 50s until slightly north of Richmond, then mid-60s on north side of Richmond with nice robust-looking bunches of small updraft bases supporting hefty towers, and then up to 75 just before I encountered the hailstorm. Max hail size I estimate around 1" which is smaller than reported at nearby RIC airport and car has no hail damage at all. I did not see a lot of lightning. Updrafts were all in front of the storm and along the leading edge.

5/17/2012 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Yesterday morning I took my observation and emptied the gauge. Around 8pm, I was in the yard and decided to check the gauge, it had .02" in it. But I was sure there had been no rain during the day, so I wasn't sure what to do or where the water came from. But an automated home weather station in my neighborhood which reports on Mesowest indicates rain over that time period. Maybe we both had canopy drip - I have no canopy directly over my gauge but there is canopy within a few meters and some may have blown while falling. Or maybe there really was a shower.

5/30/2012 9:00 AM 0.42 M M M M Storms formed behind (over top of) surface gust front. Gust front reached parts of Gaithersburg a bit after 6:30pm and storms with moderate to occasionally briefly heavy rain reached Silver Spring after 8pm and continued thereafter in College Park, on my several-stop journey home. Lightning appeared to be mostly in-cloud and was not frequent but there were quite a few flashes even continuing in very light rain behind the storm for several hours.

6/2/2012 12:00 PM 2.04 M M M M 1.78 fell by 8:25pm, mostly from around 5:30 pm to around 7 or 7:30pm. Most of the rain fell from a cell which tracked from around Fort Belvoir across National Airport and Camp Springs area and continued northeast through Greenbelt and College Park. Second was a long-lived cell from southwest Virginia that became a bow echo around Mannasas, then weakened and redeveloped over northwest DC and tracked just to the west and continued northeast up I-95 and produced the tornado at BWI. The third was development along a visually apparent boundary stretched diagonally across the beltway and moved from southwest to northeast along the boundary. Low-level shear was sharp and visible with surface winds from E/SE, scud moving from southeast, updraft bases of small towers aligned north-south and moving from the south, and storms moving from the southwest.

6/23/2012 9:30 AM 0.55 M M M M Intense thunderstorm arrive around 7:40pm with a shelf cloud and low-hanging black updraft tower moving from the WNW, mammatus overhanging in front of it, and frequent lightning sparking above the shelf cloud. Rain curtains with blowing sheets of rain were visible nearby to the south, along with frequent curly ground strikes, then the rain and gusty wind arrived with the storm core - but none was as strong as what passed a couple miles (or less) to the south.

6/25/2012 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Had sprinkles around 7 or 8pm from anvil overhead from distant storm that never reached me, and saw nearby updraft bases for developing storm that passed to the east. Guessing the water in the gauge must be from a light overnight shower - there were some overnight showers and thundershowers and the sprinkles I felt would not have come to .02" as they did not even wet the ground, just a few isolated drops.

6/30/2012 9:00 AM 0.76 M M M M Undercatch due to wind, although my gauge exactly matches the amount reported by the automated home weather station a block away. Evening severe storm came after 10:30pm first with a light shower with very large raindrops widely spaced ahead of the gust front, then incessant lightning in different colors - bluish, greenish, yellowish, pink, white flickering behind different parts of the complex cloud structure with a laminar striated shelf cloud barely visible (lightning behind it illuminated other parts leaving the best features in the shadows) and smooth watery base behind it. Wind started gusting as the shelf cloud passed over and gusted for quite a while probably over around 60-70 mph, fortunately no damage on my block despite many downed branches and pieces of branches. Power went off and on several times but stayed on afterwards but nearby areas lost power. Winds were initially persistently strong with impressive gusts, then as rain continued, it surged with gusts while the mean wind decreased to around 15-20 mph. Most of the lightning was in cloud and many of the ground strikes were toward the rear of the storm, and anvil rain and lightning continued for a long while later. The derecho was rather uniform across a broad area - the swath of high winds was unusually wide as well as intense for this part of the country - almost a synoptic scale swath, not on the scale of a cell or cluster of cells.

7/14/2012 9:00 AM 0.39 M M M M Brief torrential downpour around 7:30am this morning. I did not notice any lightning or thunder.
7/15/2012 9:30 AM 0.01 M M M M Updraft bases passed overhead during the day but as far as I am aware, none of those towers developed into showers. Sprinkles passed over the area in the evening/overnight from remnants of convection to the south but I did not notice any rain - likely fell after dark from that.
7/16/2012 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Few drops of rain around 6pm, minor thundershower around 7pm behind gust front which arrived from south of the metro area with very little gustiness but a fine line on radar. (Gust front originated with much more vigorous storms which collapsed - what I got was a new development which rose up over DC)

7/19/2012 9:00 AM 0.27 M M M M I watched a tower build up suddenly southwest of Rockville near Potomac, glaciate on the east end while continuing to billow up on the west end, and produced a heavy rain shaft which then became thicker and completely dark and opaque and started producing lightning bolts. A little while later around or shortly before 4pm, the gust front from the main batch of storms blew in from the north past Gaithersburg (way out ahead of the storms), producing new fresh updraft towers. Eventually this merged with the outflow from the Potomac/-south of Rockville cell which produced backbuilding a little bit. Lightning bolts were sparking out of the rain-free updraft bases in the backbuilding (west) areas while heavy rain was falling toward the east (apparently with a lot of lightning there too but that part was obscured from my view)
7/20/2012 8:00 AM 0.95 M M M M Big lightning storm came at 10pm with spectacular display of continuous illumination and vivid bolts in the towers. The lightning was more frequent than one per second plus multistroke, mostly in cloud though plenty of ground strikes too. Heavy rain but not exceptional came after the beginning of the lightning, behind the updraft base. The gust front was weak - seems it may have passed through much earlier and only had weak additional focus at the edge of the storm. Earlier during the late afternoon, a big storm over Baltimore dropped a gust front south through my area and towers developed along or behind it before dusk, but I saw no lightning from those and the rain from those stayed to my east slightly. At around 12:30am, more moderate showers without lightning passed over which formed to the southwest of the edge of the complex that moved through after 10pm and tracked northeastward (the main complex tracked southeastward, so the shower band swept over areas the complex had also gone over).
7/21/2012 10:45 AM 0.80 M M M M Rain overnight into the morning, rather heavy around 8am, still very light rain continuing now. No lightning or thunder here.

7/27/2012 9:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Lightning to the north late evening after dark, no storms here. Not sure if we got a shower shortly after that or if rain was from overnight showers from dissipated area of convection to the west.
7/28/2012 11:00 AM T M M M M Saw/felt a few raindrops around 9pm Fri eve from what appeared to be old anvil remains - looked thick and watery but there were no towers or any signs of updrafts. Gauge was dry.
7/29/2012 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Storms formed by noon in the vicinity-south-east but nothing here. More updraft bases in late afternoon toward evening, then a large storm passed by to the south and produced a great lightning display a few miles to the southeast with a lot of rumbling thunder, but again dry here. The lightning had horizontal sparks under the thick rear anvil and bolts to ground toward the rear of the storm closer toward the core but not a lot of illumination in the towers even at dusk.

8/2/2012 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Isolated afternoon and evening storms but none passed over my site. A line of updraft bases with modest towering cu passed over approx 8pm but never matured. 8/10/2012 9:15 AM 0.57 M M M M .08" from afternoon storms, .49" from overnight and morning rain. Moderate rain with no lightning/thunder 8:30-9am, still light rain at obs time 9:15am. Evening thunderstorms along and behind numerous outflow boundaries with 3 simultaneously visible from my office. Bay breeze storms formed early near Baltimore and left an outflow boundary - new strong cells formed later there, towers visible from my office in Gaithersburg! Outflow progressed west with another storm forming near/east of Columbia and added to the outflow, boundary moved west all the way eventually across I-270 and south across DC area. New very intense cell formed along it inside the Beltway and intensified along Connecticut Ave corridor near Beltway and moved north building westward, just east of 270, with low-hanging scud clouds, a nice arc-shaped collar and low updraft bases, and an impressive rain shaft with lightning bolts of all varieties sparking out of it.

9/19/2012 7:45 AM 0.60 M M M M Likely undercatch due to winds during the heaviest rain. Heavy convective band with gusty winds mid-afternoon followed by prolonged light rain. At work in Gaithersburg, the wavy band came through with black bumpy updraft bases that did not have strong winds. Wind gusts followed during the rain as momentum from strong low-level flow was carried downward in the rain and the winds I saw were not all that high, definitely less than the 50 knot severe threshold, although at home I had many small branches down in my yard. I did not observe any lightning or thunder at work and do not know if any occurred at home.
