A deafening roar of insects, especially loud in the grassy area around the rain gauge and I assume that means crickets or grasshoppers. Songbirds, jays, ospreys and swallows. The air is more clear today than ever before and it is possible to see that the swallows have an uninterrupted white breast, making them tree swallows and not bank swallows.

Dark sky to the north and to the southwest with a yellow stripe beneath that, in Europe, would indicate the possibility of hail. The entire Potomac River has a muddy color, despite various lighting conditions. No wind, at all, atop the riverbank which is about 30 feet above the surface of the river, but swells of a foot or more from the NNW with whitecaps. In spite of the swells, two big fish jumping. The squirrels are very active in the Shag Bark Hickories, knocking the hickory nuts to the ground for collection.

USGS 01653600 Piscataway Creek gauge height at 6:30AM: 3.17 feet. The response time for the Piscataway Creek measuring station seems to be about 2 hours after the begin of a precipitation event. For the first 10 minutes (from 7AM to 7:10AM) there was absolutely nothing to be heard except crickets even though two gulls were sitting on the pilings of the pier. Canada geese, spiders, one box turtle on the path from the compost heap, one buck resting on the embankment next to the river, songbirds, jays, crows, gulls diving for something in the water, cormorants and ospreys.
