3/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.0 M Warm, sunny and very windy yesterday. I will be taking snow depth measurements each day this week, as he weather is projected to be conducive to accelerated loss of the snowpack.
3/12/2012 9:00 AM 0.23 0.0 0.00 9.0 2.36 All precipitation in the gauge fell as rain in the overnight hours. I am taking snow depth measurements physically close together this week, in order to reduce variability in the accuracy of measured rate of snow loss for a given sampling area, and we lost 3 inches of snow yesterday. The weather was tailor made for snow loss through melting and immediate evaporation--bright sun, temperatures hovering at 60 degrees during the afternoon, and a constant gusty light wind. I am taking measurements from my one remaining snowfield, a very gently sloping area that tilts to the NNE. 2/3 of my lot is bare. there is some minor surface ponding (the ground is still frozen), and thin rivulets of runoff from remaining snowbanks. the lake is covered with melt water, and the ice surface close to shore is opaque and is softening. I live in the area of the greatest concentration of freshwater lakes in the world, so my snow loss has implications for the larger geographic area-- southfacing slopes (common on morraines, drumlins and eskers in the area) and southfacing lakeshores, bogs, creekbanks and road prisms may experience greatest snowcover loss. I walked into the woods across the road (a government owned sparsely stocked large sawtimber stand heavily deer browsed-- so no understory to speak of) on a 300 yard transect, down a northward trending gradual slope, and consistently got 11 inches as a snow depth. all trees in this area have completely bare areas around their bases. The core sample was completely icy, composed of at least 50% clear granular ice, and unexpectedly heavy and wet, due to the presence of meltwater that was trickling through it to the ground below.
3/13/2012 9:00 AM 0.26 M M 3.0 M all precipitation fell as rain. the depth of the snow this morning is 3 inches. We lost 6 inches of snow off of my snowfield yesterday due to the rain and misty conditions. 3/14/2012 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.5 M The snow depth this morning was measured in a tiny patch of snow-- all that remained of my snowfield. My lot is 95% bare and when I looked out in the woods across the road, the forest floor is 85% snow covered.

6/9/2012 8:00 AM 1.26 M M M M The rain started at about 9 PM last night. A narrow band of thunderstorms tracked from the northwest to the southeast along the border of MI and WI. There were several brief periods of intense rainfall with this little system. The rain was most welcome! Poor CoCoRaHS raingauge now has a cylinder that only holds 0.96 inches of rain. A bear became angry two nights ago that he could not get at the birdfeeders, and swiped poor CoCoRaHS gauge off her post and cracked the top of the cylinder. Bears have a temper when they are thwarted...Guess it's time for a new gauge.
