Cloudy & muggy all day with periods when sun almost completely broke thru, but no more Precip. Some Tornado Watch's to the S & SW of us, but nothing here, but some periods of strong winds & varying air pressure & Temps.

About 7:55pm Thunder to the NE & moving toward us (continuing for about 40 min), while skies took on an ominous caste & clouds weird formations (seems there was an updraft to the W), but no rain fell into the gauge. When the barn cats came to the house to eat, one of them was damp - which means some extremely light rain fell on the N side of our ranch - about 400' from the house..

I wonder, now that Venus crossed the face of the Sun, will that make our weather even more erratic? Tues Temps = 84/64º a wonderful sunny day w/cooling SE breezes so one could work outside. Only downside is that weeds also love it & are abounding. As soon as you pull one out, 3 pop up.

Wed Temps = 81/60º these days have been wonderful - cool clear a.m.'s, warm to hot days w/light cooling breezes, comfortable nights. The only real difference from late Summer/early Fall has been the Dews - then there are very wet ones. It's a pity, we need the water now - even if it's only a good Dew.

Thurs Temps = 81/58º - what does one say about these "ideal" days, but it's great weather. However, comfort & convenience not withstanding, we need rain badly - before the ground starts to crack. Hopefully, the forecasts are right & Mon, Tues (& possibly Wed) we'll get a nice dose.

Puddles almost totally gone as ground was so parched it sucked up whatever water lay on top, just leaving mud. Mon Temps = 87/64º Thunder c/b heard from 8am &, I had to leave by 9am & just as expected, the T-storms started @ 8:50 driving in fr. the NW accompanied by violently strong gusting/whipping winds v.s. the ES gusting/whipping winds. Driving the 50 mile E was an adventure. The semi's stayed below 55mph, school buses pulled onto the shoulders of the Interstate, visibility was less than a mile. Unfortunately, some drivers (mostly in smaller cars) tried to drive @ below 35mph - mostly w/o their lights on, creating a danger. The shoulders on the Interstate are wide enough to pull over comfortably. Why are people so self-centered & inconsiderate? Back @ the ranch, I was told the storms were over by 1pm.

Tues Temps = 84/61º another beautiful day w/grasses & weeds abounding - at least now the weeds c/b pulled up, w/the roots, rather easily. The storms yesterday split a rather large, old tree in thirds - of course 1/3 is hanging down over one of the fences (& hot wire) - it was a beautiful tree & a great loss, esp. for the cattle that loved to lie under it.

The T-storms that were moving SE last night (ranging N from TX) have moved E to just outside MO (now ranging fr. TX to IA/NE). Hopefully our front has moved & the air isn’t too dry so we will get the benefits of these rains. Thurs Temps = 88/62º another hot sunny sultry day w/slightly cooling breezes.

The parched ground has soaked it all up, leaving no puddles. Hopefully we’ll get more later today/tonight & tomorrow – we sorely need it. Sat. Temps = 91/67º a hot muggy day w/little oxygen. Working outside would have been impossible without the whipping winds, which, thankfully, were on the gentle side. Window open & fans on even w/the winds made being inside bearable.

Temps much more comfortable & air easier to breathe. Oddity - the winds fr. the NE, the storms fr. the NW & the rains fr. the S. The rest of the T-storms never materialized. Only puddling of water is in rocky depressions & even they're soaking in fast.

Ground hasn’t started cracking yet & ponds/creeks, etc. are still holding their own for the most part, tho getting low. Early this a.m. the N.W.S. issued another Special Weather Statement for dangerous Fire Weather conditions due to the combination of low relative humidity, high temperatures.& the ongoing Drought.

The N.W.S. issued another Special Weather Statement for the next several days as we have "Dangerous Fire Weather". Guess they don’t want to “ruin” people’s fun by banning fireworks as Independence Day is at hand. Thurs Temps = 102/65º another blistering day, by mid-morning the cooling breezes had decreased to a point that they didn't help. Though we can't complain - look @ the fire-stricken areas, esp. in CO, where the excessive heat & winds are making life impossible.

Mon Temps = 93/73º another hot one w/strong winds to mitigate the heat & some short periods of cloud cover (haven't had that in days). But, can't complain - look @ Colorado - hi heat & blazing fires, & the NE - hi heat & no power to those in & around DC. At least it's comfortable in the early a.m.'s around here even if we desperately need the rain.

Can't even call what we got, a Trace. Periods of clouds & sun rest of day, accompanied by some strong, storm-like winds. What happened to the winds - @ 10am already 90º & only very mild breezes! According to the forecasts, we are due to get a break next early week w/lower Temps & rains. Sure hope so - ponds, creeks & rivers getting way down, &, in some places grasses really starting to look wasted. Don't know how much more of these oppressive heat animals & humans can take w/o having some pretty bad side effects, esp. those that are near term & those working outside. Seems like the heat is even getting to the flies, either I'm getting better at swatting them or they're getting slower - even found some lying dead w/o my help.

At 4:20pm suddenly Thunder broke the silence as strong T-storms moved in from the NE(!), by 4:40 the driveway was running & large tree limbs/branches were laying on the ground - broken off by the strong fiercely gusting winds that came in on the Storm. When the Storm ended, about 5:10 there was 0.37" in the gauge - w/more supposedly on the way - virtually no puddling, except in rocky depressions. Another .02" fell after the main Storms left. 7/17/2012 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Tues 6:50am 74º, H=72%, DP 65º, AP 29.98", S & SW breezes nearing double digits, no Dew & sunny w/very few clouds. Mon Temps = 99/72º another hot, sunny & heavy day summer's day w/mild breezes & still no rains or Dews. At least the nights are a little cooler, making the early mornings comfortable - until about 10am.
7/18/2012 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Wed 7:05am 76º, H=70%, DP 65º, AP 30.0", SW breezes @ teens, no Dew & a strong sun - again. No Heat related alerts issued for here - guess they figure 100-102º w/winds in 15-20mph range doesn't warrant it as the winds will make it seem cooler!?! Tues Temps = 99/71º - in the direct sun was over 102º. Hot, sunny & very dry w/no relief in sight as we watch grasses burn up in the sun & the ponds/creeks, etc. getting lower & fire danger growing by the heartbeat. Some, who have hay cut, are even holding off baling as worries about fire grows.
7/19/2012 6:55 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Thurs 6:55am 78º, H=66%, DP 66º, AP 30.05", WS mild breezes, no Dew & partly cloudy. Early this am the N.W.S. finally issued a Heat Advisory until 7pm Sunday. Wed Temps = 103/74º another blazingly hot day only mitigated a little by the nice gentle winds. A little after 3pm this afternoon, the N.W.S. issued a Special Weather Statement for elevated Fire Weather conditions for the rest of today & Thursday due to Drought & excessive hot weather, coupled w/gusty winds. Guess they don't think this area, w/its Temps around & into the triple digits (daytime) & 70's-80's @ night don't warrant either a Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning.
7/20/2012 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Fri 6:50am 71º, H=80%, DP 65º, AP 30.02", not a hint of Dew, very minimal air movement fr. the NE & sunny. Cut hay is laying in fields as everyone is afraid of starting a fire if they try to bale it. Thurs Temps = 105/77º what does one say when it looks like the "'30's Dust Bowl" is re-emerging to (hopefully, only) some extent - blazingly hot, dry & windy, w/what grasses & crops are left burning up (even weeds wilting), free running waters evaporating fast & dirt flying in the air we are trying to breathe. Now the forecasters are saying the Drought could extend to November & spread further E & N.
7/21/2012 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sat. 7:05am 70º, H=82%, DP 64º, AP 30.08", E breezes nearing teens, a very minimal Dew (the 1st since the 13th) & sunny. The N.W.S. extended the Heat Advisory to 7pm Tuesday - guess we're really in for it as so far have had 7 days of record-setting Temps + 3 more over 100º. Fri Temps = 102/71º thankfully the breezes were coming fr. the NE - they're more cooling than S & SW. Had to start feeding hay to the cattle today, after waiting as long as could w/o hurting them. They're remembering how to eat weeds (most of which are as, if not more), nutritious than the grasses, esp since we kill out the hurtful ones early in the season. The Prairie grasses are really starting to spread into the non-Prairie pastures, which is a good thing.

7/23/2012 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mon 7:15am 78%, H=69%, DP 68º, AP 30.13", S winds in low teens, no Dew & strong sun. Total SWE Monday from 7/16 thru this am = 0.0". Sun. Temps = 100/71º as air movement was mainly fr. S & very warm, didn't help mitigate the heat we were burning up with. The This afternoon the N.W.S. extended the Heat Advisory until Wed @ 7pm.
7/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Tues 7:05am 76º, H=73º, DP 67º, AP 30.08", S breezes nearing teens, no Dew & sunny w/no clouds. Mon Temps = 103/76º for some reason, maybe because the AP was so hi &/or the winds died, today was the worst we've had so far. Just after 4pm it pretty much clouded over & the warm winds finally came whipping up, obscuring the fierce orb we call the Sun (about time - the clouds had started trying to take over the skies for about 2 hrs.) & the Temp was 103º. By 5:30pm the Temp was down to 100º.
7/25/2012 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Wed 7:05am 78º, H=65%, DP 66º, AP 29.95", S winds in low teens, no Dew & sunny. Early this a.m. the N.W.S. issued a Special Weather Statement for continuing elevated Fire Weather conditions due to Drought & winds. Tues Temps = 102/74º thankfully we had nice winds today to help move the air & give the impression of being cooler - it wasn't, as the winds were hot. Around 3:30pm started having short periods of full cloud cover, not lasting long enough however. At 5pm Temp was 102º.
7/26/2012 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Thurs 6:50am 79º, H=65%, DP 66º, AP 29.87", SW winds in low teens, no Dew & totally overcast obliterating the sunrise. Hopefully, scattered T-storms forecasted for this afternoon & evening will materialize. Don't expect a lot of Precip., but even a little w/b of great help. The N.W.S. issued a Heat Advisory for today fr. 10am-7pm & Lawrence Cty (as well as most others) still have their Burn Bans in effect. Wed Temps = 106/76º another record-setting day. Hot & very windy. About 3pm skies clouded over & sun retook skies at 4pm 102º, at 5pm 106º - still sunny & very windy.
7/27/2012 6:55 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Fri 6:55am 69º, H=95%, DP 68º, AP 29.98", SW mild breezes, a very nice heavy Dew & sunny. A very comfortable morning w/grasses looking like grass v.s. dead. That's what a little water will do. Thurs Temps = 95/77º a basically overcast day, but bright. Light rains jumped over us in every direction & we didn't get a drop in spite of air being heavy & you could smell the rain in the air. Very disappointing even tho we knew would only get a small amt. - something w/b better than nothing, esp. in case of a Drought.
7/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sat. 7am 68º, H=69%, DP 57º, AP 30.10", E & SE light breezes, no Dew & sunny. Fri Temps = 102/68º about 2pm this hot, breezy (hot), sunny day became clouded over & Temp was 103º. Just about 4pm a scant handful of drops fell (not even a drop in the gauge) only to be quickly dried up by the sun which quickly reappeared. Guess when they say "chance of rain" 10% we have a better chance than when they say 40% or better - even if it's only a few drops.. Just after 2pm the N.W.S. issued another Heat Advisory fr. 11am Sat. until 7pm Sun.
7/29/2012 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sun. 6:50am 78º, H=62%, DP 64º, AP 30.03", S winds in low teens, no Dew & sunny w/few clouds. This a.m. the N.W.S. extended the Heat Advisory thru 7pm Mon. & a Special Weather Statement for elevated Significant Fire Weather Conditions thru Mon. These will probably be carried thru this week as forecasters are calling for Temps over 100º thru the week. Sat. Temps = 103/68º other than it was hot & heavy, with light breezes that were also hot, what could one say about this weather.
7/30/2012 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mon 6:50am 81º, H=45%, DP 58º, AP 29.95", SW winds in low teens, no Dew & a nice representation of clouds hazing over the sun. Early this a.m. the N.W.S. extended the Heat Advisory & Red Flag Warning until 7pm Tues, but I think they should have just called it a week from the forecasts. There is also a small chance of scattered T-storms this afternoon (but don't hold your breath). Total SWE Monday from 7/23 thru this am = 0.0". Sun. Temps = 108/76º another record-setting day. At 10am it was 99º & by 1:30pm w/skies partly cloudy 106º & a 30% chance of rain. Bet. 2:30 & 3pm it hit 110º & still cloudy. In early afternoon the N.W.S. issued a Red Flag Warning until 8pm tonight as SW winds w/b fr. 10-20mph w/gusts over 25mph. In the latter afternoon, really thought we were going to get some rain as skies darkened & fierce winds came up, blowing everything (including the dry dirt), but it never made it.

Dirt sporadically pock-marked w/drops but gauge & grasses bone dry. Mon Temps = 108/77º at 4pm the Temp was 103º & cloudy w/warm breezes. By 5pm it was up to 108º & another record-setting day.
8/1/2012 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Wed 6:45am 74º, H=81%, DP 68º, AP 29.93", ES cooling breezes & mostly cloudy. About 1:15am some lightning (wasn't Heat Lightning) as storms in the area, but no Precip. here. July had 17 Days 100º or higher - 7 of them records. Tues Temps = 100/76º off & on drops of water fr. the sky during the am hrs - but gauge still as dry as dust. By noon sun really trying to break thru clouds, but a very muggy day so far. Thick cloud blanket really controlled the day w/minimal to nil where breezes concerned. Occasional drops fell, but added up to nothing in gauge. This afternoon, the N.W.S. extended the Heat Advisory until 7pm Wed, 8/1.
8/2/2012 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Thurs 6:50am 77º, H=69%, DP 67º, AP 29.8", SE winds in low teens, still pretty cloudy. Slim chance (30º) of T-storms later today & tonight. Early this am the N.W.S. issued a Heat Advisory fr noon to 8pm tonight. Wed Temps = 104/74º skies thickly clouded over by 2:30pm & by the time the 1st few drops fell fr. the sky @ 4:30 had a high of 104º. At 4:45 a light sporadic rain started falling - barely wetting the walks & not affecting the dirt blown onto vehicle windows - but it was wet & something is better than nothing. Gauge still bone dry.
8/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Fri 7am 76º, H=76%, DP 67º, AP 29.83", WN breezes, no Dew & thick cloud cover. Maps show rains right over us but nothing falling here - yet, hopefully. Thurs Temps = 107/76 another record. When I returned home, my husband told me that about 3pm we had a "dust storm" fr. the West, barreling up the drive. Needless to say the W bedroom window was open & that area was full of dirt. The N.W.S. extended the Heat Advisory until 8pm Fri & re-issued their Special Weather Statement for a Red Flag Warning thru Sat..
8/4/2012 6:55 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sat. 6:55am 80º, H=60%, DP 66º, AP 29.88", WS breezes nearing teens, no Dew & mostly cloudy. The N.W.S. extended the Heat Advisory until 8pm tonight & re-issued their Special Weather Statement for an Elevated Red Flag Warning thru today due, to Temp, low H, serious ongoing Drought w/extremely dry vegetation, gusty winds & poss. scattered T-storm today & tonight. Fri Temps = 104/73º another hot day, thankfully nice periods of overcast & mild breezes made it a little more "comfortable".
8/5/2012 7:00 AM 1.18 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sun. 7:10am 71º, H=97%, DP 70º, AP 30.17", SW minimal air movement, lightly raining & cloudy. Sometime after 1st gauge reading, winds blew a "plug" into the funnel hole & mostly plugged it up, so not sure gauge reading is correct. Most of water already soaked into ground & few puddles in graveled drive, etc. Drought still far from over, but this surely helped - esp. if we keep getting more. Sat. Temps = 72/108º a hot, humid, sunny & windy day. Shortly after 6pm the N.W.S. issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until midnight - just as the sky darkened threatingly & the winds changed direction. The leaves on the trees also turned, taking on a pre-storm coloration. At 7 the storm hit, lasting 1/2 hr., knocking out electric for a few moments & dropping 0.13". Just before it hit we had a major dust storm, obliterating visibility past 15-20' & Temp was still 108º. When it was over the Temp had fell to the mid-70's & the breezes were refreshingly cool. The next hit about 8pm & we had several outages + an odd-colored sky. This one lasted for over 45 min. We didn't get hail but got the ferocious winds & rain coming from all 4 directions. Several more storms came, lasting from 15-30 min, the last @ 11:45pm. These storms were violent & on the scary side, but we got rain. Thru the evening Watch's became Warnings back & forth.
8/6/2012 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Internet down this a.m., hence the late report. Mon 7:15am 67º, H=80%, DP 61º, AP 30.15", SE minimal air movement, a very wet Dew & sunny. Total SWE Monday from 7/30 thru this am = 1.05". Sun. Temps = 94/70º a beautiful day - not @ or + 100º & nice breezes. Drizzle stopped just after emptied gauge, leaving only a Trace. Had a lot of clean-up after the storms, but the water was worth it. Some trees will have to be cut after the ground dries a bit.
8/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Tues 7am 70º, H=72%, DP 60º, AP 30.01", SE mild breeze, minimal Dew & sunny. Mon Temps = 96/63º a hot, heavy & sunny day w/mild breezes. Grasses look slightly better now that we've had some rain &, obviously, the weeds outgrowing them by leaps & bounds. Ground soft enough to pull weeds by hand.

Tues Temps = 107/68º another very hot sunny day w/heavy air & light breezes. It was confirmed - the "burnt orange sky" that turned a weird shade of green on Sat. evening, coupled w/the train-like noise, was an F-1 Tornado which came down about 3 mi. E of & us did quite a bit of damage in the City of Miller.
8/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.14 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Thurs 7am 67º, H=85%, DP 62º, AP 29.92", SE mild breezes & sunny w/a lot of clouds. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but we need far more rain than this to have a chance to combat the Drought. But, on the other hand don't want floods, so guess a little @ a time is better - less run-off & better absorption. Wed Temps = 99/66º started out to be a hot & sunny day w/mild breezes. About 2pm sky clouded over as T-storms came into the area (could hear Thunder in the distance) & by 3pm walking was hard to due fierce winds - the storms jumped SE of us (want the water, not the hail). By 6pm walking virtually impossible due to combo: force of winds, dirt "storms" & debris flying in the air. Strong T-storms & rain w/damaging Lightning began by 10:10pm & were gone by midnight, leaving us w/ 0.14" in gauge & not a puddle in sight.

Thurs Temps = 93/67º by 8am sun obliterated by clouds & cont'd. this way until about 1pm when sun broke thru, but still plenty of clouds - & a nice breeze. All in all, a lovely enjoyable Summer day.

Fri Temps = 85/62º day warmed up quickly, &, just as quickly the NE-W whipping winds. By 10am winds in mid-hi teens. Just about a perfect day & evening. Funny how just a light bush hogging of the "dead" grass brings up the green.

Temps = 96/67º waited for the T-storms they were predicting, but nothing. About 10:15pm could hear Thunder in the distance & see Lightning nearby to our NW & W. Don't know who got the rain last night, but it wasn't around here. This isn't good at all. Fall calving season started here this am. - 2 wks early fr date the Dam went to the Bull. He's a cute little fella.

Forecasters calling for light rains this am - but they've been so wrong recently that afraid to put faith in it, even if KS is getting rains which are moving due East. Early this am, the N.W.S. re-issued their Special Weather Statement applicable to Wed. for an elevated significant risk for wildfires, due to 90"s Temps coupled w/gusty SW winds & the Drought. Mon Temps = 82/64º shortly after filing yesterday's report, the clouds "knocked the sun out of the ballpark" & never returned until 6pm. Cool NW winds came up & felt like rain (H in low 70%'s & DP in low 60º's) - but nothing wet fell. It was more like a Fall day (mostly in 70º's) than Summer & leaves on trees starting to really turn Autumn colors. But not complaining as man, beast & flora need the break.

Not even a hint of a puddle. Tues Temps = 79/58º droplets from the sky! Light drizzle & rains sporadically thru the day into evening & every drop precious. When I 1st checked the gauge about 3pm, the water was brownish/red due to the dirt in it - at least it got a good cleaning. Ground soaked rain up as fast as it fell. Have to say it was a raw day - definitely not like Summer, maybe late Autumn (the leaves turning Fall colors & falling off the trees sure make it seem that way). Weeds growing like bandits, but easier to pull now that ground received some moisture.

Weaning went quickly & easily, now listening to the bawling Dams & calves - their not as bad as their Dams (when their bags get full they bellow).

At least can hope "old wives tale" about rain 90 days after a heavy Fog will hold true (but, that's 11/25 & don't know if we ranchers & farmers can hold out that long). Total SWE Monday from 8/20 thru this am = .46". Sun. Temps = 82/69º rains came in 3 or 4 spurts thru the day, never heavy or long - but, every drop precious.

Hope Hurricane Isaac brings us more rain & in greater amounts than over this weekend. It maybe too late for this year's crops, but sure would go a long way to helping out the Flora & filling ponds/creeks, etc. for the wildlife. The downside however w/b the damage he'll do to the Gulf Coast - it's a no-win situation.

Spent quite some time cutting & picking up large limbs (as well as small branches) of trees damaged by the T-storms & winds. Not to mention, pulling up quickly growing tall weeds that were just waiting for some rains to sprout - but it was easy as the ground so wet. Just wish the grasses grew as fast, esp. for the livestock which are now eating weeds again. Guess there is some "good" to a Drought - they re-learn how to eat the weeds that are nutritious. We get to pull the weeds w/thorns & stickers, which they normally avoid.
