I was at work in Madison when people from Hendersonville came in and said we had a "gully washer" for about 10 minutes complete with pea-sized hail. When I got home at 5:30 there was only 0.10 in the gauge and rain was just starting to fall again. It just sprinkled the next few hours and quit around 9. This am there was 0.03 in the gauge. So total for the day was 0.13. Temps dropped from upper 70s to the 50s in less than 3 hours yesterday. |

32 with heavy fog again this morning--except this morning it is not moving in and out like yesterday. Our town of Hendersonville had a rare occurrence in its existence yesterday due to the fog and fog ice that it formed. We had a 45+ car pileup on one of the local highway overpasses. One accident started it with apparently 3 other accidents occurring behind it--all chain rxns due to sudden stopping from the initial accident(and lack of visibility) The stopping was not helped due to fog ice that coated the surfaces of the bridge--and of course it is a highway where people were traveling at 50-70 mph. Sadly there was one person killed and 13 taken to the hospital. More clear details will emerge as they have time to access and evaluate the scene. But this is the general gist of the story. All the news stations carried detailed "weather" explanations of how the fog-ice forms and how these surfaces freeze before regular road surfaces. The meteorologists used models of roadways and other tools to explain the fog-ice, while the newscaster helped with it's relevance to the accident. Much concern again for today as same conditions exist. It reminded me of the pictures we see from California when they have massive pile-ups due to fog. I'm not sure if the video clips made it to the weather channel or not. |

The rain did not start until almost midnight as a strong squall approached again--just like Friday night. Luckily the line lost some of it's punch by the time it got to our area around 2am. We just had a 10 minute window of strong gusting winds with heavy rain thunder and lightening--then it was over and gone. Storms were calc to be moving at 70mph by the weather service. As to weather last 24 hours from what I have gathered it was a wet heavy snow early melting on contact. No real accumulation on the ground. Crossed over to rain then was done by afternoon. I arrived home to sun at 5:oopm. He said water in gauge was a combination of rain and the wet snow that fell in the morning that the gauge caught. Sorry cannot separate the two values. |

46 sunny and clear. We dodged a big bullet where we are in Tn yesterday. We had some small storm go by early 6am in the morning and saw nothing--even had sunshine all day until around 4pm. Then the only supercell to hit our area came. We were on the top north side of the storm with majority hitting south and west neashville. Even still we had 5 minutes of intense winds sideways rain and pea sized hail. Little thunder and lightening associated with it. Just a few branches down and that was all the damage we had. Rest of evening was partly cloudy with stiff nw breeze blowing in cold air. Went from 81 and humid to 40's and dry by 9pm. Areas around Tn not so lucky. Watched weather channel--learned much about radars and tornado detections--also glad people mostly took head to this breakout and were prepared for the worst. I repeat--we were so lucky!

On another note--I see all the blank areas in Ohio and West Va this am. I know Columbus, ohio got hit with 80-90mph straight-line winds last night and over 400,000 without electricity in Ohio total last night. They are saying worst damage since Hurricane Ike hit. My son lives there-has no power. I am assuming that this is why so many stations are "dark" in West Va too. |

tremendous lightening and we got 0.90 of rain. We lost electricity immediately-as we always do! Then the second wave hit around11:45 with equally impressive lightening--but more rain. Then another round hit around 3:30 with heavy rain and lightening. Finally got to sleep around 4:30 after dogs finally quit barking...long night. Various power outages in sumner and surrounding counties--not large numbers but there are outages. |

August totals 5.03 inches. The rain early in the month really helped recover from the previous dry spell. Many plants grass crops and trees responded well to it. However It has not significantly rained here since the 17th--and we are drying out again! Does not seem to take much to dry out once you are in that cycle. Not complaining mind you to all of the drought stricken regions that are hurting far worse than us...just saying it's looking dry around here again. Big rains on one day with dry hard-pan ground don't stay around long--just run off to streams and lakes. |
