Roadside ditches and most seasonal streams again stopped flowing (after lights flows from last week's rain) due to drier conditions. Mild winter so far. Early spring crocuses have already broken ground, catkins on hazelnuts are expanding, and pussywillows are budded out. Certain weeds are growing. Signs of a very early spring, if you look for them. Our "rainy season" this fall/winter has been notably drier than normal, with Oct 1st, 2011 through Jan.31st, 2012 rainfall measuring 9.85" (my 15-year average is 13.84" and JG's 33-yr ave is 13.58"). Many ponds, wetlands, and lakes still have lower water levels thus far. |
