Warm (59 degrees) and windy this AM with a few more clouds. This has been an absolutly perfect weather week with sunny blue skys, warm daytime temps and cool cloudless nights. Sadly it will end next week and reality will set in that winter is just around the corner. We usually have snow by the end of October, so will enjoy this while I can!!I heard that this is supposed to be a bad winter with cold temps and lots of snow. I can hardly wait!! |

IT feels more like spring than October. The AM temp was a summery 61 degrees under sunny skys. This weather could last forever, but we all know it well end next week and reality will sink in. I heard that Chicago is supposed to have a BAD winter with lots of snow and cold. I can haardly wait...this last winter seemed to last forever, and it wasn't particularly severe. Getting old, I guess. |

Today will probably be the end of the most glorious weather weeek I can remember!! A whole week of clear blue skys, undeasonably warm temps, and a gentle (sometimes a bit more) breeze blowing. Warmer today at 34 degrees under a clear sky. Got up at 0530 to observe the Orionid Meteors. Viewing conditions were absolutly ideal with a dark sky, and a crescent moon hanging high in the eastern sky. Sorry to report I saw only one very faint meteor as is usually the case with these things! I remember driving out into the county while living in a W Chicago suburb to observe a shower one August and saw nothing!! We often drive the Ranger up in the field for a 360 degree view of the sky and usually see one or two meteors. I waS NOT that ambitious this AM, so settled for the parking lot with a great view of the southern sky and Orion. |

An all day rain beginning around 10:00 and lasting until after dark provided some much needed moisture. There was snow mixed in starting about 2PM although the temp never fell to freezing, it kept up the rest of the day. I could see some accumulation on the deck along with the heavy rain. Spring must be here already! The AM temp was a balmy 47 degrees with a gusty SE wind. Frightened away a doe that was walking up the path beside the house at 0615 (new time). There were two more lurking in the woods not far away. They must know we do not hunt or allow huinting on our property (60 acres). There is a bow season on now and gun season is only less than two weeks away! Funny I haven't seen a buck yet. They usually gather in Nov., but perhaps it has been too warm for the does to be in season. Not an expert on white tail deer!! Even if they eat the flowers and the bird seed, we still enjoy their company. |

Winter has arrived with a vengeance! Large glumps of snow falling, driven by a fierce NW wind, made being outside very unpleasant. There is probably at least a half inch of snow in the woods and in grassy spots while the parking lot is completely bare. The measure of the amount of rain that fell overnight may not be completely accurate since there was wet snow mixed in plugging the inside tube of the guage. Since the AM temp was 34 degrees, I once again brought the guage in the house to keep it from freezing if the temp drops. The snow on the board was mostly slush! |

Much too early to be shoveling snow! The heavy, wet snow brought down many white pine branches and other branches as well. The measurement is not too accurate because some of the snow melted and was mixed with rain at first, then came down in clumps for a while. We did shovel 3" of snow off the deck (it didn't melt because the surface being high off the ground, was colder. There are bare places and patches of ice crusted snow on the ground now. The AM temp was a just one degree above freezing at 33 degrees. |

I remember as a child growing up on a farm in SW WI, during spring break I always helped my dad plant oats. The nuts are falling and the orchards will be opening this week with early apples for sale. They have started picking and say the crop will be good. |

All of the nuts (hickory and walnuts) have fallen already and are much too green. The squirrels cannot remove the outside hulls on the hickory nuts! More needed rain fell yesterday and overnight. Severe storms rumbled through SW Wisc late PM and overnight. We escaped most of the high winds, hail and even tornadoes that were reported. The family weather spotter was called out around 7PM for the first time all summer, but had little to report. The worst weaather went way to the south and again up north!! |

They say the apple crop was near normal this year in spite of the early warm spring and than the freeze in April. Up on the hill, it did not get as cold, therefore did not freeze the apple blossoms. |
