2" by NWS measuring stick -- which is located ~2m from the canopy of a large spruce. Snow depth under the canopy is 0". I took a total of 10 depth measurements starting at 1 m from bare ground (depth = 5"), then at 2m intervals moving progressively farther from bare ground along a straight line (17" deep farthest out). Mean 13.3m, Std Dev 3.8". About 20% of the lawn -- that under conifer canopies - is bare ground. In surrounding forest, snow depth is equally variable between areas of conifer canopy and areas of open ground. In deciduous (aspen-birth) forest, there is bare ground only right next to the trunks. A core was taken on our lawn where snow depth is 15.5". Water content of core (standard diameter) = 5.24". |
