It's probably been about 10 days since I last mowed and the grass in the front yard is admittedly getting a little out of hand, but little did I expect to find sedges (Carex sp.) growing there, a testimony to wet summer we've been having. I discovered six plants today in an area of about 130 sq. in (10 x 13 in.). They averaged 9.2 inches tall (range, 5 to 11.8 in) and had 4.5 leaflets/plant (range, 4-5). This is the highest, driest part of the yard, and is exposed to intense sunlight for at least 8 hours of the day. The yard is still incredibly lush and green, in contrast to a year ago at this when everything was parched, dry, and brown. |

As of the middle of this week, things have suddenly started to look parched around here. In walking through the front yard yesterday, I noticed that an area of grass exposed to full sun was actually crunchy underfoot. That experience caused me to check the 30-day rainfall, which is now down to only about 2.5 inches, a dramatic decline from a mere week ago when it was still hovering at well over 3.0 inches.
The records show that we have enjoyed an unusually wet summer. Today, for the first time in 46 days, the 30-day average precipitation dropped below the 5-year median of 2.88 inched. |
