Last night around 11 PM, there was snow outside the window and on the spare lot around cocorahs gauge. when i woke up at 8 AM, the snow was gone. In 32 years of living right here, this has never happened before, let alone, happen in January. A hard wind blew all night and most of the morning. Something else that is new, is that often in the last few years, later in the winter, the snow will go rapidly around the house, but will linger in the woods across the road. It is very diminished in the woods, too. The trace of snow was a minute amount that I found frozen to the deck against the wall of the house this morning.

2/11/2013 6:00 PM 0.55 6.0 0.45 16.0 2.20 This snow event began at 3 PM February 10 with 45 minutes of steady rain. It had been misting on and off for several hours previously. The rain froze immediately upon striking the ground or objects--local roads were like skating rinks. the rain ended at about 4 PM with a snow pellet shower and then the snow began. It snowed heavily for an hour, tapered off and then ended, resulting in about 1.5 inches of new snow. sometime during the overnight hours the snow resumed, and it snowed on and off all day on Feb. 11, lightly. Probably due to the intial rain creating a sticky ice surface, the snow has accumulated on the conifer branches thickly. We were told to expect wet, heavy snow. The snow is not particularly wet or heavy, but the snow crystals are especially large, and the snow piles lightly.

3/10/2013 8:00 AM 0.30 0.6 0.05 14.0 3.32 The new snow measurement was taken at 2PM on March 9. We experienced brief snow showers early in the day. When they ceased, I measured the snow and the melted snow water from the gauge. The SWE in the gauge was 0.07 inches, there was 0.6 inches of new wet, heavy snow, which yielded 0.05 inches of SWE. In late afternoon, it began to sleet. In late evening, and intermittantly during the night, it rained. I was able to draw off the rainwater from the slushy sleet in the bottom of the gauge: Rain: 0.16 inches. Melted water from slush in gauge: 0.07 inches I cleaned the board of snow on March 9 after taking measurements. At 8 AM on March 10, there was 0.01 inches of icy slush on the board. As I was scraping it clean, I realized I should have gotten a SWE from the slush. oh well, I let Science down again. I am sure I will get another chance before spring... At 2 PM on March 9, snow depth = 15.5 inches. The rain caused a condensing of the snowpack to 14.0 inches.

The cores that I collected yesterday to measure SWE were sampled within 3 feet of each other, and they vary by 0.89 inches of SWE. The snow is blowing out of the conifers already and this may be affecting this area. Or, I may have sampled a position today that did not lose all of its snow cover when the snow melted away early in the winter. I had some patchy snow cover remaining at that time.

4/15/2013 8:00 AM 0.90 1.4 0.58 18.5 7.10 It began snowing heavily around 6 PM on April 14. Mixed rain and snow, with a preponderance of rain, was falling by 8:30 PM. The precipitation ended sometime during the night--we awoke to clear skies. The winds driving the rain were from the north--this morning the north side of the exterior of the gauge was coated with ice, and the south side of the interior was coated with ice. The winds aloft are very strong. What few rags of clouds there are in the brilliant blue, sun-filled heavens are ripping northward at a terrific rate. Water and ice are raining down from the trees. One should not look up--ones' eyes promptly encounter falling ice. I measured the ice coating the low hanging and downed tree limbs, and it measures from 0.05 to 0.10 inches in diameter. Given the weight of the snow and ice in the trees, it is amazing that only twigs, small branchlets and small to medium sized dead branches have come down, and not many of those. But, as a forester, I understand that an ice storm has a burdening effect on trees already weakened from age or disease, which shows up as breakage and loss during summer wind and rain events. The new snow accumulation is a poor estimate-- much of the snow fell mixed with rain, and the accumulation on the board is very icy. Beneathe approx. 0.4 inches of ice crust on the board, the dense, fine-grained snow measures about 1.0 in depth. so about an inch of snow fell before the snow became mixed with rain, and then changed to all rain. The snow pack is now very granular, icy and wet, with a heavy surface crust. 1.16 inches of SWE in the core measurement was obtained as solid opaque ice that was chipped off the bottom of the core site with a hammer and chisel.
