10/5/2012 7:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Fri 7:50am 46º, H=89%, DP 43º, AP 30.18", NE winds in low-mid teens, sky a medium steel blue/grey & water in the winds. Thurs Temps = 80/54º sunny, warm & breezy until late afternoon when winds came up gusting & cooler.
10/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sat. 7am 37º, H=91%, DP 35º, AP 30.25", ES minimal air movement & a pretty colorful sunrise in spite of the clouds. Earlier this a.m. the N.W.S. issued a Patchy Frost Advisory from 4-9am Sunday w/the possibility of another fr. Sun p.m. thru early Mon a.m. Fri Temps = 37/55º (hi Temp just after midnight). "Rain" (most of time more of a fine Drizzle or heavy Mist) during this cold & raw day. Icy winds died completely after sunset making it seem warmer. It's a pity, we finally got some pretty flower color in the fields (Dandelions, Sunflowers - tho small, Prairie Violets, etc.), &, of course, Ragweed, only to be hit w/"wintery" weather so early.
10/7/2012 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sun. 7:30am 31º, H=94%, DP 30º, AP 30.29", WN slight air movement & sunny. The "world" outside the door froze overnight. Sat. Temps = 48/34º mostly a cold & brisk day. Tho, the sun made it presence known it didn't have any real heat to speak of. A few times thought we were going to get a little rain, but gauge stayed empty. This afternoon the N.W.S. issued a Freeze Warning fr. 4am-9am Sun & a Frost Advisory fr. 4am-9am Mon.

So much for an early Spring! We need the water, but not the Ice. Mon Temps = 30/61º about 12:30pm, when the light Drizzle started to fall it was 59º º - blown horizontally by the S winds - becoming a fierce downpour w/in 1/2 hr & then fizzling off - all the time the winds carrying it on the horizontal. By the time it stopped, about 1:30pm we had 0.23" in the gauge & virtually no puddles as the, now, NW winds carried any water on top of the ground away. Debris was flying all over the place & walking was a "1 step forward, 2 steps back" event as MW winds from low 30's gusting into the low 50mph range. Shortly after 3:30pm the N.W.S. issued a Wind Advisory until 7pm for sustained wind speeds of 30mph w/gusting to 45mph as Temps continue to drop.

The way the Storm hit, all our doors were iced in & it was fun getting out. Chopping the Gauge out of the Ice & melting the contents (the inner walls of the Gauge also had Ice on them) took quite a while due to the Ice's thickness. Wed Temps = 35/24º w/winds rising in the night from mid teens into mid 20's. Light Snow/Sleet began just before midnight. At 3:50pm the N.W.S. upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning. The day has been grey & cloudy w/no sign of the sun & Temps aren't doing much in the way of rising. Hopefully this won't turn into another '07 Ice Storm. Eventhough we've buried our electric, the Electric company hasn't buried theirs - guess their "geniuses" figure its better to have to replace poles, lines, etc. every few year & have customers w/o power than to bury the lines.

Sure helps that we have 2 gauges - during a storm pull one off the bracket & replace w/the other - no loss (just don't forget to put petroleum jelly on the brackets so they slip off easily (after breaking Ice on top). Thurs Temps = 34/28º power out @ 8:05am (for about 2 hrs) & Thunder Snow @ 8:52am - it sleeted "sheets of white". The Storm caused several shorter power outages after the 1st & sporadic periods of Snow/Sleet, which changed more to Snow as day progressed & winds grew icier & more gusty (low 30's gusting to low 40's). Every living creature tried to get out of those cutting winds.

Everyone blames the calves for the bawling after weaning, but, if one takes the time to look, the Dams are calling because their bags are full & only a few calves are bawling. Have to remember, by this time they only nurse 1x or 2x a day, the rest of the time they're off on their own & their Dam's have to call when it is nursing time.

In the late afternoon, received another 0.05" supplied by a light rain. Thick wet Fog socked in the area by 11pm - could see the security light by the house, but those on the barns were barely visible, & then only as faint halos.

At 1:15am the skies opened & torrential rains poured down, accompanied by serious Thunder - the Lightning & winds continuing whipping the water as it fell, at times horizontally. Needless to say, the air lightened up & the Temps fell. We've been waiting for this all day. The heavy rains were gone by 1:28, as were the whipping winds. The Lightning quickly followed & you could hear the thunder going East, also. By 1:49am it was all over but got the water dripping from the trees, vehicles & house. A nice gentle rain started about 2am. About 1:30am The N.W.S. issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 5am. Hopefully those that cut hay today either didn't rake it or did & quickly baled it. Otherwise, the raked hay might go bad by the time it dries enough to bale. Thurs Temps = 98/74º, SW winds in low teens & in latter part of day changed to WN, but stayed light. Very comfortable in the morning w/a strong sun most of the day, but 2 periods of sudden cloud cover & an increase of H & AP made us think it would rain. It did - 4-5 mi. to our E, &, then, only "4 or 5 drops fell - not enough to wipe off anything" (1 of the 2 times).

Tues Temps = 97/71º, WN winds staying in the mid-hi teens & mostly sunny, hot & w/"heavy" air. Late this afternoon, T-storms started moving into the general area from the SE moving NW - skies darkened, winds came up & air got even heavier(!) - & Severe Weather Advisories were issued. Could see the weather to the SE, but, storms weakened & missed us - again! Where Al was haying, 4 mi to the E, they had a light pass-over. Just enough to get the "stiffened", but not enough to count as rain or fill the cracks that are appearing. Our gauge stayed empty. Still have mixed feelings. We really need the rain, but too many people aren't finished getting the hay in (due to the heavy rains we had in May-June). Unfortunately, the extra dry ground (from the years of Drought) @ the lower levels took a long time to absorb the water & haying equipment couldn't get into the pastures.

Forecasters are saying scattered T-storms starting this afternoon/evening & continuing thru (possibly the who week!) Sun/Mon. Hope we get some meaningful Precip - it's way too dry & everything is starting to really suffer. Not to mention, but the flies are phenomenal this year. Fri Temps = 98/72º, S winds very mild to almost non-existent (& really needed the air movement) until just before sundown when they came up, gusting from hi teens to mid 20's & brought a refreshing coolness to the air. Of course, these refreshing winds didn't arrive until we got back from fixing the broken fencing on the rented land.

Guess no one w/b haying today, but gives a chance to catch up on indoor work & repairs. Sat. Temps = 93/69º, SW light winds until the T-storms hit then ranged from mid 20's to low 40's. Well, at last we got some real, meaningful Precip. About 2pm we heard Thunder to the W, but the storm clouds jumped us to the ES. About 6pm, just as we finished pulling 2 pastures of hay bales, the winds came up & the skies to the NW started to get nasty. About 7pm the Temps started to fall (rather quickly), rains started & the winds turned them into a whipping frenzy - going horizontally & from all directions. Had to closed the winds facing in all 4 directions & visibiliy became almost zero. The Thunder & Lightning didn't start for an hour after the rains became drizzle shortly before 8pm. Lightning continues, even tho by 9:30pm the walks were dry. The gauge has 1.58" & ground is quickly absorbing the water.
7/22/2013 7:25 AM 1.06 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mon 7:25am Phone (& therefore Internet) down due to T-Storms. About 3am booming Thunder & strong Lightning moved in w/great rains, in "wave" form. With new waves every 1/2 to 1 hr apart until 6am. This gave us 0.98". Not too shabby. Since start of rains on the 20th, we've rec'd. 2.64". Electric out for a couple of hrs & Lightning even blew apart a surge protector. Guess rest of haying will have to wait several days to a week (forecasters say good chance of scattered T-storms thru 1st 1/2 of wk). Needless to say, greenery is greener & weeds are flourishing better than anything else. Total SWE Monday from 7/15 thru this am = 0.0". Sun. Temps = 81/69º, SW winds gusty from hi teens to mid 30's. About 3pm today, The N.W.S. issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10pm. By 9pm the winds came up from the ES, pretty strong & knocking over heavy objects, but no T-storms or rain. Fri Temps = 73/66º, SE gusty winds from mid teens to mid 20's. Just a very damp, dank & rainy day, but everything got "watered" & vehicles were washed. By the time the 2nd wave of T-storms ended, about 8:30am, we had another 0.44" in the gauge. Looks like we are going to have rain &/or drizzle all day - good! Between 10 & 4pm, we had another 0.59". You know the saying "if there's water on the road, turn around - don't drown". Gauge emptied @ 6.29", giving us a July total to-date of 10.39" - good show for replacing years of Drought. At 6:51am the NWS issued a Flood Warning until 1pm today. Mon Temps = 83/67º, S winds in mid-hi teens w/some gusting until turning violent when T-storms hit. Rain finally started @ 11:55am & at a nice rate. This rain was short-lived, lasting only about 1/2 hr. The real T-storms hit starting @ 7:50pm & didn't stop. At 4:40 the NWS issued a Flash Flood Warning until 10am today (the Watch issued yesterday thru Mon is still in effect as we're still waiting for more Storms). Gauge emptied w/1.92" & more to come. Fri Temps = 88/70º, SE gusty winds from mid teens into low 20's, extremely muggy & sun didn't appear until afternoon. Total SWE Monday from 7/29 thru this am = 0.0". Sun. Temps = 76/69º, ES winds in the mid teens. T-storm finally moved in about 8:30am & started moving out about 9:50. Most of L & T was prior to the heavy rains. By 11:30am, the gauge had 1.28" & it was still raining. It finally stopped by 4pm & gauge had another 0.28". Sun came out briefly about 5pm. Considering that the average annual Precip. is 44" & we've already had 46.49" this year to date, guess we're in "make-up" mode for the past few years of Drought. Taking advantage of the Drought, a lot of the landowners, who could afford it, had new ponds dug out &/or cleaned out existing ponds - they are all now filled to overflowing. The creeks are now rivers & drainage ditches are full to overflowing. When went to leave our place this morning, about 10:30, the water in the drive was about 2" over my ankles. We could say we are in flood stage. At 7:33pm the NWS extended the Flash Flood Watch until 7am Tues (from 7am Mon) & @ 9pm the issued a Flood Warning until noon on Monday - boy, this is getting confusing, trying to keep up with the Watches & Warnings. Lets just say that when I walked out the last time to empty the gauge, the "dry" ground squished up water around my feet. Hoping none of the females due to calve later this month decide to do so within the next week.

Earlier this am, the NWS extended the Flash Flood Watch until 7am Friday. Tues Temps = 82/70 º, WN gusty winds from mid teens to low 30's. After a day of varying weather - sun, "storm" winds, clouds & drizzle (all under a heavy mugginess), suddenly @ 3:20pm the skies quietly opened & a nice, gentle downpour ensued for 5 min. before tapering off to a light rain w/some thunder as it petered out.

Our waterway, wet weather creeks & ponds, as well as drainage ditches are filled to capacity (have gone down during the day so slightly that it is barely noticeable). Busy cleaning off fences that are covered in debris (grasses, garbage people throw on the ground, etc). Some places, the fences are actually prone to the ground due to the volume of water & debris. Fence posts that were cemented 3' or more into the ground are among those lying prone. White Oak Creek is a "raging river", Spring River is the width of 5-6 rivers. Waters are flowing fast, carrying trees & other debris. Can definitely have too much of a good thing. Yet, if we go 3 or 4 weeks w/hot humid weather & no rain, the ground will turn rock hard. You can't win for trying.
