Not a bad situation in West Swanzey, max wind 35MPH, heavy rain fell between 8 and 10:30 PM. Not loss of electrics. No damage, and 6 cats sleeping through the whole ordeal. Moon was out at 1:30 AM, and clouds are mostly gone, coming from the South. |

I didn't melt the snow, I'm doing an experiment to see how long it takes to evaporate at dew point -14, temp of 5. Trees cracking in the cold, cats are stationed at the usual places they hear mice, squirrels. The joys of winter.
Still this is better than 98 degrees , humid and not a breath of wind.

Interesting, and somewhat embarrassing forecast for the forecasters who first claimed 8-12+ inches of snow on Wednesday.
We had mostly drizzle, few light showers, and the song birds singing up a chorus.
I've heard cardinals, crows and blue jays,(the norm), mourning doves, phoebes, chickadees,partridge (new to our area),woodpeckers,and our spring friends the blackbirds and starlings are back. I've only seen 3 robins.
The snow's melted away from the bottom of the trees,meaning tapping season is under way. |

Balmy day yesterday. High of 56.8 not a cloud to be seen. Our resident mosquito was in flight, accompanied by 3 gnats and a ladybug who almost made it to the driveway, but took a dive.
No sign of the the white black-tipped tail weasel we saw last week. I think it's called a stoat in winter, long-tail weasel in summer.
Blackbirds are slowly making a comeback, and oddly enough, the robins we saw in January are no where to be seen or heard.

Temp got to 47, south wind. Cold air's back on the way. Heard loads of blackbirds, discussing what they discuss. Crows were abundant, chickadees chickadeeing, blue jays jaying, cardinals were hiding, probably for a few days, but they could be heard, and our partridges seem to have gone. That's to be expected, I suppose. We have no pear trees around here.
Snowpack is less than an inch, except for the typical piles at the end of the drive. Rain should clear alot of that away later today. |

Fluffy snow for temps in the low 30's (31). Before each event (2) the wind picked up but stopped suddenly after 6 minutes of snowfall. None of this snow showed up on either Albany (KENX) or Boston (KBOX) radar.

Aside from the annoying wind, nothing to report. High of 34, fair weather cumulus, and not alot of animal activity. I think the tracks in the back yard are the weasel, not sure, and the critter yalping across the road at 3:30 AM .... I was not going out with a steak to find out what it was. |

There was a spider (Hank) 2 inches from the bottom of the outer cylinder, covered in snow. After the melt of the water he's moved up to the 4 inch area. Not looking to active though, poor fella. |

5 flashes of lightning at the beginning of the rain. Some of the trees are budding, the ones with the red buds or pods. One white birch has leafed out, but the leaves aren't green. The other trees are in no hurry to open up. Grass is turning green in the front yard, dandelions are looking healthy. The tiger lily leaves are about 5 inches tall.
High for the day was 70, wind was strong from the south until the rain started, then it stopped. |

Fog mist overnight. Birds are out singing their songs. A new visitor to the neighborhod is a skunk, laid back, loves the water in the ditch. First appearance was at 9PM, spent 20 minutes in the front yard, 2nd visit was at 12:15. I wish him well. |

Just saw a bright meteor, just as I blinked. When me eyes opened, I could see a tail, also bright. It was in the South-southwest, heading southwest. 2 barred owls are out in the trees across the road.

I hesitate to report a trace, as we had a sprinkle that didn't wet the grass. as of the time of this report showers have started, that will show up in tomorrows report. Still it's welcome.
I noticed an odd phenomenon from the first of the rain/showers. The dandelions wilted, not died wilted, but were sagging, and all were pointing southwest.
Trees are all in full leaf-out, but the oak has what looks like wilted lettuce. Must be an oak thing.
Skunk's visited twice for the goodies and was in no concern I was watching.
Soon the hummingbird feeder will be put out. |

Lots of no rain. The hummingbird feeders were put out today, took all of 6 minutes for a male to come do a quality control check.
He approved, stood on it dining for 2 minutes.
He left but came back a few minutes later, and still in flight, checked all the openings were functioning properly.
Passed that test too.
He scared the daylights out of me yesterday, flying over the table, sounding like a HUGE bee. I nearly fell over backwards in the chair.
Good to see them back. They were my twin sister's favorite birds. |

First night we kept the windows open, although the cats aren't convinced there's anything interesting at the odd hours.

3:54AM the first lightning bug was spotted by the 6 year old kitten sitting in the window, who was intent on observing lightning bug behavior. I was outside and asked her, she never answered. Must be a cat thing.

Not so much of a rainy day as sprinkly and breezy. Nigh winds are blowing up a hooley as well. 44° but the humidity is finally gone.
That makes it easier on me, as the cats hogged the table fan. Fur flying around, parked on my side of the bed, it was terrible.
Hummingbirds are still doing the Hatfields and McCoy thing, but not as much since the cool down.

I saw a deer at 3:45 AM taking a morning walk.Either that or a large dog with incredibly thin legs. It was big enough to put a saddle on, so I'm guessing deer.

First thunderstorm gave 0.12 of rain. Temp at start was 77°F, after 61.7°, that was in 10 inutes as the wind came in. High gust was 40 at 3:55PM, 7 minutes till the rain started. No wind damage, hail or flooding.

Hummingbirds are using all 3 feeders, the third, once I figured out it had to be popped open, is least used because it's furthest from the nesting trees.
I also found the red shirt does mean they think they struck the mother lode.
I near took a backwards digger from the chair.
90 degrees forecast for the next 5 days. I'm not looking foward to that, nor is Miss Daphne, who has taken up residence in the window. She's an older long hair siamese, and barely has vision. I call her Babykins, as she, nor the other cats come when called, only when interested.

Hummingbirds are doing well. I think there are 2 broods of younuns. Although the males are still in dating mode.
Blue jays are rare to be heard, so the songbirds have taken over.
I washed out the rain gauge as the pollen and mold was beginning to foam, which means it's becoming ambulatory soon.

A thunderstorm in Keene made noise, but gave us only rain. 3 of the 5 storms were heavy rain, with the sun shining brightly. When the last one finished, around 6:30, the temp went up 4 degrees toward the end.

94.49 was the high temp. Hummingbirds waited till the sun was gone, and a bit testy. They're still not pleasant, but getting the food before the sun comes a shinin'.
KENX (Albany, NY) will be out of service till early August, as there is a hardware failure, so I will be using the KBOX (Boston, Ma.) radar for the storm movement this weekend. Boston's local doesn't show west enough for this area. |

Late night distant thunderstorms(11:30PM)went to the north. 75 degrees at 1130, the wind picked up to 15-20, and the temp went up to 79. As the storms weakened the sky cleared and the wemp went to a low of 63. |

Hummingbirds are still having the male guarding the feeder dispute.
If anyone is looking for a missing pigeon with a green band on it's leftleg, it visited at 4:30 PM, not the least bit concerned Mom and I were outside.

Hummingbirds had a furious competition at the feeders. At least 20, and the Ladybirds were in no shape to take guff from the Lords of the Feeders.

I read in "the world of hummingbirds' they can remember all the feeding places on their migratory trip, and the next year remember where the feeding stations from the year before.
Truly amazing, as I can't remember where I put the glass of water two minutes ago. |

After a bit of research, it turn out the birch tree leaves were changing color due to birch leaf blight. The result of extended rainy cool spring and early summer. Most of the affected leaves have dropped, and the trees are back to green.
A sure sign summer is coming to a close, our hummingbirds have taken off for their trip south. There were only 3 of them today, fighting over one of the 4 feeders.
We'll leave the feeders up for those traveling from the north, and stragglers.

2 storm event. First was at 2:20 PM, total of .25". No flooding here, but Fire Mutual Aid Dispatch reported one inch in 30 minutes in Keene, NH., also posted a few pics of bumper height water on Vernon St. Street flooding was city-wide. Here in West Swanzey, NH...no flooding.
2nd storm was at 11:20, the rains began. Lightning to the west (Brattleboro, VT), the wind picked up quickly (15 MPH) the lightning continued, The rain poured down,(for 10 minutes), The lightning headed to the south......then it tapered to light showers.
Then it wiped its hands and said "job good enough".
Not a real good mystery story, but nature's not a mystery writer, just a performer. |

Spectacular lightning show. Around 9:00, one lightning strike was so close, I heard the deck umbrella pole humming for 3 seconds. Wind was no more than 15 MPH from the north. No hail to report, but it was well worth going out for. Only one hummingbird visiting the feeder. |

What a busy day. Temp was 67, never varied. As one storm went to the Northeast, another was developing in the southwest. Lightning was frequent and was within a mile for 50% of the afternoon. Lost electrics at 1430 for 45 minutes.
No wind or hail to report. Mum was questioning us being outside while the lightning and thunder were simultanious. We survived.
Only hear blue-jays around 3PM , no word from the other birds.
3 spots in the yard flooded, undertr the trees to thew south, the hole where there was a gas tank years ago, and the bottom of Turkey hill had a flowing brook.
Soeaking of brook, the one across the road which is a foot and a half wide, is well over banks, and much wider.
Final note, a frog was displaced across the road, doing frog tings. Sounds like he made it back to the brook. |

Things have calmed down. Cloudy all day, save a ray or two of sun. High temp made it to 68, but slowly dropped to 62 before sunset. Now 49, clouds have headed off, water from Thursday has soaked in to the ground. Brook's back to a calm level, and Kermit the lost frog is gone.
No hummingbirds, looks like they are gone.
One squirrel was seen Friday morning eating on a mushroom that collapsed. I think he's fine, he was around in the afternoon. Look slike someone trimmed the fur on the poor mite's tail thouhg. |

The Geese have begun the migration, still waiting for the blackbirds and starlings to gather before they head out.

Another glorious day, makes me sick. There was cloud cover around 5 PM and again around midnight to 4, but it's breaking up. Canadia geese are migrating, to the west for some reason, but all 19 seemed to know what they were doing. Later on will be the blackbirds gathering in the trees and then heading off. They're usually the last of the migraters.
