11/19/2012 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Third "major storm" to be a bust - this one accompanied by a flood warning. They got the wind rite, tho - gusts to 38mph. When I moved down her in 1976 from Eugene I noticed 2 things about the weather here - how dry it was(driest in western Oregon, but I'm a cyclist and that's good)and that when the wind blew outta the E,SE,or S(downslope) 9 times outta ten, rainfall was minimal or non-existent. There were exceptions, notably the so-called flood of New Years 1998, but as a rule it's easy to call. Over the intervening 36 years, I've had several "discussions" with the local NWS about articles I've written pointing out the inaccuracy of their precip and temp forecasts - e.g. scaring the bejusus outta me with a heavy frost warning when the overnite low is in the mid 40's and my orchard is safe or claiming highs of 95 to 100 when it barely reaches 85.These guys just predict something until it happens and then take credit for being rite.

3/12/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This is interesting: for the first time I can remember the average and the rainfall for the so-called water year(starting Sept 1 here) correspond(except of course for the first day if there's no rain] - 17.73. Why is this significant? Because it shows how worthless the phony-baloney water year statistic can be. At the end of Dec( due to a wet previous 2 months) we were 5" above normal. There hasn't been a decent rain since. As regards soil and fuel moisture at low and mid elevation(below 4000ft)we are in droughth conditions in the Bear Creek Valley. The last 2 years, when we had dry winters, our asses were saved by heavy late Spring rains We can't keep counting on that. The forecast for the next 10 days is dry and sunny. Summer forest fires can fill the valley with smoke for weeks during the Summer. Even last year with a wet Spring(including June)we had over 32 days of haze or smoke due to fires. I've always used and will continue to use the calender year precip as the true measure of Valley livability.

4/1/2013 8:00 AM 1.25 M M M M I'm at a loss to explain the amount of precip after 3 months of droughth(up until now the most precip in 24 hrs since Jan 1 was .38). The barometer never dropped below 30.20 and the satellite pic showed a small diffuse low pressure with little upper air support. But . . . even tho the storm came outta the Southwest, which almost always puts us in a rainshadow, the precip was wrap-around which caused it to come from the Northeast. Equally important was the lack of any South or Southeast wind which is the "kiss of death" to rainfall in Ashland. It's the most rain in 24 hrs since Dec.2, 2012. Incidently, Ashland is the only place I've been in the world where low pressure does not equate to any rainfall. I've had pressures as low as 29.53 and the sky's been clear to partly cloudy but there's almost always a howling Southeast wind. I've been in Rogue River, 30 miles away, where it's just pouring but calm and when I got back to Ashland it was clear with the wind blowing 35-40 mph.

7/19/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The pointy-heads at the NWS in Medford have finally admitted that we're in a droughth despite about 85% of normal rainfall for the phoney-baloney water year but about 40% of normal since Jan 1st(the calendar year that I use, which is a measure of fire danger). We're working on three unsavory statistics: driest first 7 months of a calendar year on record(kept since 1915),hottest July on record(previous was 2009), and greatest number of days in a row over 95°(heard that on the weather report but didn't give a year}. And despite numerous and for the time being small fires breaking out seemingly every day, the Oregon Department of Forestry refuses to move the fire danger to extreme, no doubt due to timber industry pressure since it would shut down the woods.

7/27/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Set new record for consecutive days of 95° or highter in Medford(Aahland is quite a bit cooler). Big rains in Northern California. Nothing here as usual. Last soaking rain was first week in April. New fires breaking out every day but so far kept to under 500 acres. August is the hottest driest month. It ain't looking good.
7/29/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The heat wave broke, And now we got smoke. Just great.
7/30/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Particulates are off the chart. Conditions similar to Sept. 1988 when we had hazardous smoke for almost the entire month. The nearby Cali town of Yreka had their street lights come on during the middle of the day. Forecast is for more of the same. It's interesting that when the forecast is for deleterious conditions they almost always get it right.
7/31/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 1/2 mile visibility. Over 5000 fighters on the lines of the various fires. No. 1 priority in the US rite now.
8/1/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M the Word from the firefiters and the DEQ is that this shit is gonna last all summer - maybe until the rains arrive in October, Current visibility as of 0800 hrs is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile. It's interesting that, on the national news, we hear endlessly about floods in North Carolina or fires in now deluged Arizona or Nevada etc, etc.,but not a peep about Oregon. Figures.
8/2/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavy Smoke went elsewhere for some reasson. But it'll be back with a with a vengeance. It's just hazy rite now. On the weather "front",it was no surprise we had the hottest July on record but last month was the hottest month, overall, on record. It beat the previous record, July 1967, by a full degree. Also this the driest first 7 months of the calendar year ever recorded and since August is the driest month, I'm sure it'll be the driest first 8 months.

8/25/2013 8:00 AM 0.40 M M M M At 0538hrs there was a clap of thunder and it started to pour. I realized I'd left my car windows open(why bother to close em in this droughth. I got up rushed outside. Rolled up the windows ran back inside and the rain stopped. A nanocell had just passed over. Fortunately about an hour later here was some actual rain. This is only the second time since April 8th that we've had more than 1/3 of an inch in 24 hrs.

9/1/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The end of another so-called water year. Total from Sept1 2012 is 23.74. Normal is 24.58. Things look OK, rite? Bullshit! Every month since Dec,2012 has been below normal except for this August(thanks to a rare rain storm). The vast majority of the rain for the so-called water year fell in Oct,Nov, Dec, of 2012.The 8 months since Dec 2012 have been the driest I've recorded since I've lived at this location(8/85). To add to the idiocy of using the water year as the touchstone for our moisture gauge is that it begins Sept 1. Sept has become the driest month of the year. Between 1985 and 2000 I averaged about .94" of precip for the month. Since then the average has dropped to .33" making it the driest month. If we're gonna be forced to use this so-called phoney-baloney water year, let's at least begin it when it starts to rain.
