Steady rain yesterday till dusk was never very heavy but was frequently moderately heavy and with no thunder. Then rain became lighter and more intermittent overnight and to observation. Preliminary "Sandy" total so far: 3.70 with at least a little more expected. Although rainfall was quite substantial with high winds at times, this neighborhood dodged the proverbial bullet with no worse than minor wind damage and flooding and also no electrical power interruptions. Folks prepared to expect at least double the rain that actual fell and maximum winds near hurricane force which actually maxed at moderate gale. It appears this storm will be remembered for a new record low barometric pressure of at or close to 28.38"Hg which undercut the March 1993 Superstorm by several. Rainfall preliminarily was measured at Brother's house 0.2 mile NW of home and may later be adjusted. On 11/03/12, measurement at home was found to be 0.16 greater. This amount was adjusted from 3.05 to 3.21. |

Drizzle began at 4:20 PM and changed by 5 PM to wet snow which fell moderately and steadily as mostly large slush flakes between 5 PM and 7 PM before changing to rain and occasional slush flake by 8 PM. Light rain and drizzle continued till about midnight. Temperature and dew point during the wet snow converged and stabilized at 33 and then rose slightly to 33.5 at around changeover and held steady between 33.5 and 34 the rest of the overnight, even until observation, with slow melting. During the wet snow, local asphalt streets became lightly slush covered until treated late in the snowfall while concrete sidewalks became only wet to slightly slush covered in segments despite remaining untreated so no shoveling was needed. Despite partial melting of the wet snow which clung to most exposed objects, this Christmas morning is a winter wonderland. At 9:30 AM, revised total precip from 0.25 to 0.26 to include 0.01 from post-midnight drizzle. As of this 9:30 AM update, total snow depth decreased to 0.5 inch with temp/DP both now 36. With sun just beginning to break through, most remaining slush should ablate quickly. |

There has been some significant differences with convective showers in recent weeks over the 800 feet to NW between where this fall was measured and the registered location, so this could later be adjusted upon seeing Mesonet CW4113, 1.5 mile to WSW, reported 0.72 for this same episode. Stratiform rains have measured very close. This was eventually adjusted from 0.40 to 0.44. |

Showers and thunderstorms prowled at times during the PM of the 22nd into this morning, ending long before dawn. A heavy downpour occurred around 3 PM, and an even much heavier downpour occurred late evening including 1.29 during the 30-minute period ending at 11:59 PM according to the recording tipping-bucket gauge. Only typical minor flooding occurred in this neighborhood while unusual flooding occurred several miles to the west where rainfall exceeded 4" and reached up to 7" at some places. The U.S. Corp of Engineers at Blue Marsh Dam has been regulating excess water release through the flood gates, keeping Tulpehocken Creek basin flooding minimal, likely averting a major Tulpehocken Creek flood event. |

A friend who attended a race event in Kleinfeltersville in far northern Lancaster County, where that storm hit, reported observing frequent intense prolonged flash-bang lightning and an estimated one to two inches of rain but traveled from minor flooding to only slightly wet grounds within a couple of miles after leaving the area. |
