I can't remember the last time I measured over 1" of rain!! An all night rain with a thunder storm thrown in at 2AM gave us some much needed moisture. It is still raining at at a pretty good rate. The first flakes of the season took me by surprise this AM when I looked out the window hoping to get a look at what we call the "Mystery Animal" that was making its wierd noises. Actually it is about a week beyond when we usually get out first taste of the white stuff. I have seen some nasty October snows; like in 1998 when we were trying to get the roof on this house finished, and the year I drove up from attending my friend's father's funeral in Platteville and the slush on the road was about 4" deep! Much warmer today at 38 degrees under a heavily overcast sky. |

It feels like late April; damp and windy with an overcast sky and starting to sprinkle. The temp is a balmy 59 degrees, some 12 degrees above the norm for November 11th. Today is our younger son's 47th birthday. How time does fly by. Saw a big buck in the woods when walking the dogs in late afternoon. He just stood there and stared at us for the longest time, then just laid down. I thought he may have been shot with an arrow, but he got up and ran off when confronted. A hint that gun hunting season is a short two weeks away. |

Very difficult to measure snow fallen since 0730 yesterday because of the fierce winds blowing (measured at 43 mph top gusts) it around. Snow board was bare!! Best guess is between 3/4 and 1 1/2" of new snow. Winter is surely here today. The temp is a frosty 15 degrees, but the wind has died down and it is really quite beautiful with the intense blue of the sky against the white snow on the dark trees and the green pines. The drifts are quite deep, some over my tallest boots. The deer did eat all of the corn I put out, and the birds are making pigs of themselves in the feeders. |

Bitterly cold again today at just +1 degree. We got a tiny amount of snow, but there was more to our north. Went to La Crosse and drove through several snow squalls both going and coming (around 5:00 PM.) The snow stopped just north of Soldiers Grove!! Since I spent 3 yrs working in Viroqua, I've seen this happen many times at that spot. There was a strong wind here that was still present at 10:30 PM.

A very warm January day at 47 degrees with thick fog and plenty of ice left. There were two thunder storms, one around 11PM and again after 4AM. There appeared to be plenty of rain, although do not put out the gauge in the event that it could freeze. Measured a piece of ice I removed from the sidewalk around noon that measured 3/8" thick!! Still plenty of ice on the road and it is very slippery!! |

Just starting to snow a few flurries at 0700. Did not get the 4-9" of snow predicted for this area last PM. The AM temp was at 32 degrees. Took in the rain guage at around 10:30PM. At that time there was 0.28" of rain, and the top cone was covered with heavy, wet snow that when melted yielded 0.15" of liquid. Cannot say this was a 24 hr accumulation, but it must have stoped snowing shortly after that time because there was little snow on the ground this AM. |

Woke up to the strange sighting of a bright orange ball in the eastern sky. It seems forever since we've seen the sun in the morning. A blue sky and less wind with a temp of 39 degrees. Pouring rain at 10 PM. The spring bulbs are staring to emerge from the ground and the crocuses are already blooming in a snow bank!!

Another evening spent cleaning up water in the basement! The city of Boscobel (in Grant Co to our south) had the worst flooding since 2008, some say ever. It made all of the Madison news at 5 and 10 PM. The main highways from the north were blocked by a huge mud slide. It looks as if more rain is expected shortly. Last year we had a severe shortage, and this year it won't stop raining!! It is good to see things green and fresh, but enough is enough! Just what we needed, more rain! It grew very dark around 7AM and the rain started falling faster. Have not looked at the radar, but I expect there will be a big blob over Crawford Co. Went down to Platteville yesterday to a visitation, and the road (Hwys 60/61) was still closed just north of the bridge due to a huge landslide that they have been removing since Sat PM. I ended up taking Hwy 80 out of Muscoda rather than going back to Boscobel and taking hwy 61, anyway there were many places where mud had been on the road from small slides and overflowing creeks. I was happy to get to my destination in one piece. My normal driving time of 1 hr was much longer!! Have to go up to S Grove today so will see more I'm sure. The Kickapoo is supposed to be flooding again. |

Another beautiful, sunny day with a temp of 60 degrees. Compare this year to last when it was 90 degrees almost every day and very dry. It is good to see all the green grass, etc. now. The corn looks good in spite of the late planting and cool conditions. The apple trees are loaded with fruit. Should be a good year for the farmers around here!! |

Quite chilly again today at just 51 degrees. At least the sun is shining in a mostly clear blue sky. This beats the heat and humidity that we endured all last summer. No doubt it will warm up this week: the WI State Fair starts on Thurs. and it is always very hot for this event. |

A little warmer today at 60 degrees, but no sunshine. We will probably get some more rain, which will be welcome. The crops look great, and the apple trees are loaded with fruit. There are still black caps along the road, the the blackberries are still very green. I wish the deer would stay out of the garden, tho. She ate off all the beans AGAIN! There is a spike buck about also.
Could this be a sign of an early fall?? |

A nice gentle rain fell off and on all night long. Good that we don't have to water the garden today!We drove to Viroqua in Vernon CO. for supper, some 25 or so miles north of here.They were unable to get their usual sweet corn because the farmer was unable to get into his fields to plant at the usual time, thus the corn was not yet ripe. It was great to see everything so green and beautiful for early August. Last year was so dry that everything was brown and ugly. |

We're back to the old pattern of the storms go north or south of us. On our weekly trip to LaCrosse I noted the lawns in the city were turning brown; not so around here.
