1/31/2013 8:00 AM 0.06 0.7 0.06 11.0 M 31F, calm, 100% overcast. Uncomfortable with this reported precipitation data, since I cleared driveway app. 1400 on 1/30, removing 1"-plus, and saw that replaced with around another inch later in afternoon. So total of .7 (with .06 moisture content) since 0800 on 1/30 does not make sense, even with melting. Am relocating snowboard to avoid possible wind and sun distortion of actual new snowfall amounts.
2/1/2013 8:00 AM 0.01 0.2 0.01 11.0 M 31F, 80% overcast, calm, new snow consists of pellets approx 1/16th inch in diameter.

Tube is mounted in same place this year as last, but have noticed that new snow THIS year accumulates at a 45-degree angle in tube, forcing me to estimate the level, versus last year, when new snow would more-evenly cover the full interior area of the tube, regardless of depth. Have no idea why this is happening--but it certainly is!

3/26/2013 8:00 AM 0.01 1.0 0.01 1.0 M ground snow depth is average of 0" and 2", with about half of yard now devoid of any snow. At time of sampling, was snowing, but it appears that rising temps will melt off whatever falls.
3/27/2013 8:00 AM 0.01 0.2 0.01 0.5 M 32F, calm, 100% overcast, not precipitating, but we have a slight covering on deck. Tube contents combination of water and ice. Total snow on ground is rough estimate of average from bare ground to depth of remaining piles of snow in yard. With forecasts calling for higher daytime and nighttime temps over the next few days, we are likely to lose all or almost all of the remaining yard snow--everything except solidified snow on wooden deck, concrete driveway, and ground where snow was either piled by shoveling or slipped off metal roof throughout the winter. For all practical purposes, spring has sprung! (And we still have two bags of wood pellets left, along with about 100 split pieces of wood from three cords purchased for winter.)
3/30/2013 8:00 AM 0.14 M M M M 33f, 100% overcast, calm, foggy at base of mts. and up, light mist at sampling location. Warmer temps day and night caused more melting of remaining snow in valley.

5/23/2013 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Light rain accompanied sudden materialization of a microburst wind from southeast shortly after 3 p.m. (just after I spread 25 lbs of grass seed on yard, aerated, de-thatched, fertilized, and spread five bales of straw over .26 acres. Winds blew about a bale of the straw to north and northwest, forcing me to rake up some of it from neighbor's yard.) Lasted only a few minutes, blew fair-sized branches off willows and offed tarps, but apparently did not bring down any large limbs.

6/13/2013 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M A 10-minute hailstorm dropped a surprising amount of stones up to 5/8ths of an inch (and, by some reports, as large as 3/4 of an inch) on Jackson Hole at around 3:45 yesterday. At some points in the storm the hail was so heavy that it resembled a dense rain. Apparently no significant damage resulted, although anyone caught outside when the skies darkened and the hail began to fall must have felt that to be a mistake. I had no hail pad out, but measured the stones with a ruler and took around 25 pix, sending seven edited digital images to Nolan Doesken at CSU and to the NWS in Riverton. There was no precipitation last night. (As I type this at 9:34 a.m., it is just beginning to rain in Rafter J--two miles south of Jackson.)

7/6/2013 9:00 AM T M M M M Just enough rain to make us envious of water sprinklers!
7/7/2013 8:50 AM 0.49 M M M M Finally! A good, soaking, at times heavy rain--and just after we had finished mowing the yard and planting a few more flowers. With a little sunshine, should soon see the greening fruits of our labor.
7/8/2013 6:30 PM 0.06 M M M M Late checking gauge today, but absolutely positive that we had no rain after normal check time of 8 a.m. (However, tomorrow's report will include rainfall experienced shortly AFTER 6:30 p.m., although it lasted for less than five minutes.)
7/11/2013 4:30 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M Has appeared to be about to rain most of the day, but none has actually fallen.
7/12/2013 5:30 PM 0.02 M M M M Actually checked the gauge at 8:00 a.m. this morning, but due to circumstances (not around a computer), I was not able to enter until now. "Observation time" therefore was chosen to comply with your new rule about entering within an hour of checking.
7/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hot, hot, hot--but this is fair week in Teton County, so we can expect rain over the next couple of days.
7/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dry, dry, dry--and hot as a cat on a tin roof. Have had to spend hours watering lawn just to save it. Good news, however, is that risk of forest fire in Teton County is lowest in years.
7/28/2013 8:00 AM 0.04 M M M M All rain fell in period of 10-15 minutes.
7/29/2013 11:30 AM 0.09 M M M M No rain since yesterday afternoon.
7/30/2013 6:00 PM 0.09 M M M M NOTE: GAUGE WAS EMPTIED AT 8:00 A.M.--WELL BEFORE THIS AFTERNOON'S RAIN--BUT PRECIPITATION WAS NOT RECORDED UNTIL NOW. (HAD TO FALSIFY ACTUAL TIME IN ORDER TO REPORT ACCURATELY, SINCE COMPUTER WAS NOT ACCESSIBLE EARLIER.)
7/31/2013 12:00 PM 0.01 M M M M Includes perhaps .001-.005 precipitation which fell over the course of about one minute about one-half hour ago.
8/24/2013 9:00 AM 0.48 M M M M FINALLY! Almost half an inch of rain in a single 24-hour period! Teton County has been at the second-highest fire threat level, and this bit of moisture was desperately needed. Of course, it alone will not make much of a lasting dent in the long-term drought conditions--but it sure was nice to have!
8/26/2013 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation, despite threatening clouds that rolled in from the southwest near sundown. Threat of area forest fires remains high (at penultimate level) and the smell of smoke from Idaho fires permeates our air periodically.
8/27/2013 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Almost had some rain yesterday afternoon!
8/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M All rain fell in late afternoon of 8/27. Seems misty this morning, with fog hiding all of Munger Mountain and Tetons.
8/30/2013 8:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Brief but fairly heavy rainstorm preceded by thunder around 4:15 p.m. 8/29.
9/1/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Quote from wife: "I don't remember ever seeing our (lawn) grass this green in August." Resulting from spring weed spraying, reseeding, aerating, an extensive watering all summer PLUS simply raising blade level on mower so that taller grass can preserve more moisture. TRY IT!
9/2/2013 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M no precip last 24 hours but just beginning to sprinkle.
9/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Precipitation fell IN ADDITION to the amount that I reported yesterday as "Significant Weather" after storm came through from the south.
9/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Rain fell in a brief period in early evening. Had some thunder in distance. Anticipated (40%) rain of yesterday morning and afternoon must have missed us.
9/5/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our 40% chance of rain yesterday turned out to be warmer temps, partly cloudy skies, but no precip--allowing me to continue painting our deck!
9/7/2013 9:00 AM 0.26 M M M M Add this precipitation to previously report amount of the past 24 hours under "significant weather," which was sent to illustrate the spotty nature of storms locally--from nearly nothing to about 1.0" within a distance of two miles during the course of 15 minutes. Currently 100% overcast with low-lying clouds hiding the upper thrid of Munger Mountain and higher portions of Tetons.
9/9/2013 3:00 PM 0.14 M M M M Heavy fog this morning with ground-level visibility of only a few hundred feet south of Jackson. Cloudiness persisted until past noon, but no precipitation. Now mostly sunny with warming temps.
9/12/2013 5:00 PM 0.04 M M M M Rain had stopped by 8:00 a.m. this morning.
9/13/2013 6:00 PM 0.05 M M M M Precipitation amount actually sampled at 7:00 A.M today--was not around internet connection until now. Great cumulus clouds over the Tetons this afternoon--until storm clouds moved in from west. But no rain yet.
9/14/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
9/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Have now re-established a consistent pattern of heavy ground fog developing around 6:30 a.m. each morning but almost entirely dissipatint before 8:00 as a result of moist air layer being cooler than the ground. Fall is falling! Just got our second load of dried firewood (killed by pine bark beetles at Hoack Ranches 30 mi. south of Rafter J), and will need total of three cords, plus 50 bags of wood pellets, to get us through the winter.
9/19/2013 5:00 PM 0.02 M M M M This measurement was actually taken at 9 a.m. this morning--after it melted from ice. (Local temperatures fell into the 20s last night.) Less ground fog this morning, but heavier over the Snake River north of Munger Mountain. First good frost of the fall.
9/25/2013 7:00 AM 0.58 M M M M Rain south of Jackson began around 12:15 a.m., was fairly constant and heavy for next three hours, then varied between light and moderate. Mountains hidden in fog, but Munger does not appear to have much (if any) snow (still dark). Rain has stopped.
9/26/2013 7:00 AM 0.64 M M M M Most of the rain seemed to fall yesterday afternoon. Thermometer shows 26 degrees-which explains the bit of ice in the tube. Completely fogged in on surrounding mountains and 100 per cent overcast, no frost on the ground. Precip over past 24 exceeded previous by .06--which was surprising.
9/27/2013 10:00 AM 0.09 M M M M 34 degrees, calm, 100% overcast--and very light, small "pellet" snow falling 2 miles south of Jackson. See no snow on Munger Mountain to the south, across the Snake River, but light covering visible on other higher mountains surrounding us.
9/28/2013 2:00 PM 0.01 M M M M 37 degrees at 5:30 a.m. today, calm, overcast, with clouds lingering until this afternoon. North of Jackson (GTNP), was mostly cloudy this a.m., mountains almost completely hidden by clouds, brisk winds at Mormon Row, light snow covering the ground in places, very intermittent and light pellet snow falling until this afternoon.

Start Date End Date & Time Duration in Days Precipitation Snow Depth Snow Depth SWE Notes
12/19/2012 12/22/2012 8:00 AM 4 0.00 6.5 1.04 Throughout period, days have been partly cloudy to 100% overcast, no precipitation, highs from teens to mid-20s. Calm to low (2-4S) winds. Lows at night ranged from -10.4F (12/19), to -7 (12/20), -5 (12/21). Did not measure core precipitation.
12/28/2012 12/31/2012 8:00 AM 4 0.40 10.5 0.01 All precipitation fell evening of 12/30-12/31. At 0800, 2F, calm, partly cloudy, not precipitating. Water content of ground snow cover was 1.59" (versus .01" content in tube of new snow).
1/2/2013 1/07/2013 12:00 AM 6 T 10.0 M All snow on this multi-day report occurred in evening hours of day of last daily precipitation report (only a trace, and not sampled for core precipitation.
1/16/2013 1/19/2013 8:00 AM 4 0.00 10.0 M Daytime temps during period in low single digits to mid-teens, nighttime lows plus 2 to -9, winds light to calm, skies pcloudy to clear.
1/17/2013 1/23/2013 8:00 AM 7 0.50 10.0 M Snowless on all but one day (second) during this period, with lows -5 to -10 and highs <15 (F), not much heat from sun to melt snow, so total depth on ground remained essentially unchanged throughout period. Resumed sampling on 1/24 due to small amount of overnight snow and light snow during this day (first one in long period that we have awakened to temps above 20F -- usually -8 to +2 during period.
2/4/2013 2/08/2013 8:00 AM 5 0.00 8.5 M No snow fell during this period. Winds 0-5. Depth of snow on ground at beginning of period was 10.5" and either held steady or lost depth due to generally higher temperatures from previous week (up 5-15 degrees daily, with lows of 5-15F above, versus several negative lows in previous seven days. Lost a lot of snow/ice from roof. Period was generally overcast, with a few clear days.
2/19/2013 2/23/2013 8:00 AM 5 0.40 8.0 0.03 Mostly cloudy during period, temps in 20s and 30s, snowfall traces observed each morning over past three days, calm to very light winds.
2/27/2013 3/01/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.50 7.5 0.04 Warmer temps over the past two days (high twenties, lows in low teens or upper single-digits), even with mainly overcast skies, have caused loss of about one-inch in ground accumulation (from 8.5 inches).
3/10/2013 3/13/2013 8:00 AM 4 0.00 4.5 M Slightly warmer temps during day and double-digit temps at night, with periods of sunshine and light winds have caused slight loss of accumulated snow cover--which is now homogenized as very icy. Had a brief period of snow flurries yesterday morning, but not enough to support a new hill of beans.
3/13/2013 3/15/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.00 3.0 M Due to higher daytime temps (in 30s, 40s), light winds, partly cloudy skies with sunshine, and overnight temps above freezing, have lost more than two inches of ground snow over the past few days. Yard now only about half-covered with snow, and area where I have been measuring accumulations this winter is completely bare. Reported depth is merely an estimate of total yard average.
3/19/2013 3/21/2013 9:30 AM 3 0.60 1.5 0.42 27F, 100% overcast, S2-5MPH, snowing. Snow on ground is mainly ice. Tube sample was entirely ice, partly up side wall of tube, making it difficult to determine actual precipitation, which had been BOTH rain and snow during the period. .3" on board. Ground sample melted down to .11" of precipitation.
3/22/2013 3/24/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.00 1.5 0.00 7F, calm, mostly clear skies, not precipitating, lows over past two days in single digits, highs between 25 and 30, sunshine, causing ground snow melting. Total depth is estimated average including bare ground.
3/28/2013 3/29/2013 8:00 AM 2 0.00 0.5 M Higher temps, sunshine, continue melting remaining snow on ground, despite mostly cloudy skies. Surrounding mountains continue to have periods of cloud cover (fog? snow?) throughout the day, especially in mornings.
3/31/2013 4/01/2013 8:00 AM 2 0.00 0.0 0.00 FAIRLY HARD FROST EACH MORNING, BUT TEMPS IN 20S/30S (NIGHT) AND 50S (DAY) MELTED OFF REMAINING SNOW.
4/4/2013 4/06/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.45 0.0 0.45 Precipitation mainly in form of rain on 4/5. Tube when sampled had 90% ice. Board had .2" inches of slushy snow/ice mixture (also on deck boards, making them hazardous. About 2:30 p.m., for about 10 mins., had 1/8" hail that had started as rain, turned to snow in valley (did not stick), covered mts. about halfway up to top. (Teton Pass had couple of feet of snow--enought for skiers--on morning of 4/6.) 100% overcast morning of 4/6, but only light precipitation, light winds 2-5SSW.
4/14/2013 4/15/2013 8:00 AM 2 0.00 M M
4/17/2013 4/19/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.00 0.0 M No rain or snow during period but fairly heavy frost in mornings (17F, 13F, 25F), with mostly clear skies. Snowfall of 1.5" Tuesday failed to cover streets but managed to stay on ground a few hours. Largest valley piles of snow have all but evaporated by this point, aided by winds at times brisk.
4/24/2013 4/29/2013 8:00 AM 6 0.00 0.0 M Appears to have been some fresh snow on surrounding mountains during this period of mainly clear skies, variable winds, and moderate temperatures.
5/23/2013 5/29/2013 9:00 AM 7 0.07 M M Of reported total, .05 fell over the past 24 hours.
6/1/2013 6/04/2013 7:15 AM 4 0.01 M M
6/5/2013 6/11/2013 8:00 AM 7 0.01 M M Rain occurred as brief showers (<10 minutes) on two separate days.
6/15/2013 6/17/2013 9:00 AM 3 0.00 M M morning temps have been in lower 30s--31 degrees on 6/15 with moderate frost, recent mornings have seen light ground fog come and go around 6:45 a.m. Calm winds each morning. Grass growth appears to reflect an easing of drought conditions that we have experienced over the past couple of years.
7/1/2013 7/02/2013 3:00 PM 2 0.00 0.0 0.00 No precipitation during this period, but late yesterday afternoon, for approximately ten minutes, it almost looked like it MIGHT rain. :(
7/9/2013 7/10/2013 8:00 AM 2 T M M Precipitation occurred as a three-four minute shower on afternoon of 7/8. Since then, has been dry w/o any threatening clouds in area.
7/13/2013 7/14/2013 4:00 PM 2 0.04 M M Minimal evaporative loss due to "funnel" covering of gauge.
7/15/2013 7/16/2013 9:00 AM 2 0.00 M M Saw some dark clouds coming over western mts. during this period, but got no rain from them.
7/16/2013 7/17/2013 9:30 AM 2 0.05 M M .02 of the total precipitation was recorded on 7/16 (a.m.), with the remaining .03 being captured in the gauge over the past 24 hours.
7/18/2013 7/20/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.00 M M Hot and dry on some days, dry and hot on others.
7/19/2013 7/22/2013 7:00 AM 4 0.00 M M
7/25/2013 7/27/2013 7:30 PM 3 0.04 M M

8/6/2013 8/08/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.00 M M Hot afternoons, combined with moderate winds, taking a noticeable toll on local lawns, which are even browner than usual for this period of summer. To hold moisture better, try elevating mower's height adjustment, to 3" or more, and avoid shaving bumpy spots to the point where there is little or no grass.
8/9/2013 8/16/2013 8:00 AM 8 T M M Only rain during this long period fell one afternoon in a brief--less than five minutes--shower that did not even fully cover the ground with drops. (Just enough to ruin my freshly washed car!)
8/17/2013 8/22/2013 7:00 AM 6 0.00 M M Had some thunderclouds roll over the area during this period, raising hopes of precipitation, but failed to drop any. Have observed some local smoke as a resul of Idaho fires.
9/17/2013 9/18/2013 7:35 AM 2 0.52 0.0 0.00 All but probably .02 of this has fallen over the past 24 hrs. See previous "Significant Weather" report. Rain which began yesterday afternoon, with brief periods of hail, bolt and sheet lightning, has ended temporarily, but skies remain 100% overcast and dark. Due to closer temps of ground and sky, no fog in this area this morning--but a whole new outburst of toadstools as large as 6" in diameter and other fungi. Lawn grass is greener (for this time of year) than in previous years as far back as I can remember. Predicting below-freezing temps tonight and tomorrow night, so fall is falling early. (As a photographer, that doesn't bother me at all--and may necessitate another weekend trip to YNP and GTNP to take shots of fall colors.)
9/20/2013 9/24/2013 8:00 AM 5 0.00 M M Have had some ground fog and light frost with lower morning temps, overcast skies, but no precipitation in this period. Aspens, in particular, have been turning for the past several days, and forecasted snow on Wednesday could have created some fine photos at Oxbow Bend in GTNP Wednesday a.m.--but the incoming storm now appears to be coming in on Friday, with most of the precipitation south of Jackson.
9/29/2013 10/01/2013 9:00 AM 3 0.05 M M Most of this minor amount of precipitation seems to have fallen very intermittently yesterday morning. Presently, mostly cloudy and calm south of Jackson, 38 degrees--about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. We continue to have an extraordinary number of toadstools and "mushrooms" popping up in our yard--but not all in the same location as previous ones.
9/30/2013 10/04/2013 12:20 PM 5 0.34 2.0 0.20 This report follows the submission of my report of an unusually extended (12-15 minutes) hail storm, and consists of BOTH rain and snow. Over the past 24 hours, measured .07 inches of rain, which must be added to .27 recovered earlier in this period. Also, snow began last night at about 10 p.m., continued through about 7 a.m. today, producing 2.0 inches on the ground and my board. The core precipitation of that board snow converted to .20 inches of water. (I was unable to catch any snow in the tube, since I still had the rain funnel on it, and that prevented any snow from falling into the tube. (No snow caught by the funnel appears to have melted and added to the .07 inches of rain caught over the past 24. All snow is likely to melt with expected higher temperatures, and I am going to put the funnel back on the tube, to catch rain. (Whew.)
