10/12/2013 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today I found a yellow-jacket in my inner tube. Clearly, there had been no rain so I just dumped him out. But then I began to wonder. First, how much volume did he take? Then, would he float to the top - or be stuck on the bottom? Finally, how could I easily remove him without also removing some of the precipitation? Good questions and I'll have to experiment before I encounter the confusing situation again. Now I wish I hadn't carelessly thrown him away.

11/12/2013 6:00 AM 0.25 1.0 M 0.8 0.06 Precipitation fell as very light rain beginning at about 10:30 AM and progressed into snow which stopped about 4:30 PM. The initial snow depth was 1.0 inches, compacting and sublimating overnight to 0.8 inches. The ice coating on the driveway had completely sublimed by 6:00 AM this morning. Since I didn't take a core sample immediately after the snow stopped and I don't know how much sublimed, I don't have an accurate water content for the snowfall. Since I know the observation time depth to tenths, I am reporting with the increased precision.
11/13/2013 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.5 M The snow depth is extremely irregular. Any south-facing slope at all is clean of snow. Depth on the snow board is uniformly 0.5 inch, but depth in the grass has irregular "holes". My opinion is that snow remaining averages just over 0.25 inch and any additional melting/sublimation would have left it as a trace.

11/16/2013 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Quite unique weather this morning. Getting my paper at 4 AM, I was aware of mist in the air - but no precipitation. At six, I could see the resulting mist droplets in my gauge - but knowing it was mist I report zero precipitation.

12/22/2013 6:00 AM 0.29 T M 1.5 M After rain yesterday evening, it apparently changed to sleet and now it is beginning to snow. Visible snow to my flashlight, but no accumulation yet. Ice accretion is more than 0.5 inch but less that 0.1 inch with some interesting "drip" stalactites (about 1/8th inch diameter) that look like sleet particles clung to the branches. The outside of the gauge is rippled like a good deal of sleet collected there. My snow board has such a cake of ice on it that I can't seem to get a good sample off for my equivalent water content.

1/4/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 8.5 M No new snow, but significant winds that moved and leveled the snow field. The main effect was to compact the remaining snow about 25% with some new drifts.
1/5/2014 6:00 AM 0.41 4.9 0.37 12.0 M Initially, about 0.04 inches of precipitation fell as freezing rain. That is why the SEW is lower by that amount.
1/6/2014 6:00 AM 0.12 1.5 0.12 11.5 M With blizzard strength winds, snow was blowing and redistributing. Surface ripples developed and drifts were occurring, from snow lifted tens of feet into the air and gusting wind patterns. That the ultimate 1.5 inches on my snowboard was actually new precipitation is indeterminate!
1/7/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 11.0 M With blizzard strength winds, the snowboard had a dusting (T) of snow and the landscape had blown smooth and level again. However, with no snow in the rain/snow gauge I interpret all the snow on the snowboard as wind redistribution.

1/20/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 6.0 1.57 No new snow, but winds rearranged the snow and actually increased the snow on my lower snowboard by 0.5 inch while lowering the depth on higher elevations. I now have to average snow depth from three locations. This is an update to include SWE for the total snow. Collecting a good sample in the dark at 6:00 AM is difficult due to several layers of icy crusts and the firm attachment of the snow to the ground. A major warmup will release significant water.
1/21/2014 6:00 AM 0.08 0.7 0.08 6.5 M The reported snow is an under catch amount because of winds. Drifts of up to a foot are common, but I am reporting the snowfall remaining on level terrain.

1/25/2014 6:00 AM 0.06 0.7 0.06 7.0 M I have reported the new snow water equivalent as the total water melted from the gauge. However, the crust on the snow and the ice accretion on the outside of the gauge suggests that between 0.02 and 0.03 inches of the precipitation fell as freezing rain.

1/27/2014 6:00 AM 0.01 0.5 0.01 10.0 M The wind sculpted snow drifts everywhere. The center of my driveway was partially swept clear; with drifting up along the edges of the drive to the height of the shoveled piles; 2 feet tall! I suspect that if my half inch thick snow board had been above the previous snow line it would have been swept clean. I think snow measurement uncertainty is +/- .2 inches today.

2/17/2014 6:00 AM T T T 13.0 M With 6.4 inches of snow forecast for today, I am choosing to measure snow-equivalent-water tomorrow instead of today. This will yield totals just in time for the predicted melting later this week. Look for my amended report after sun rise tomorrow.
2/18/2014 6:00 AM 0.37 4.3 0.37 18.5 3.19 This is an edit to add today's snow-equivalent-water before Thursday's rain. I took three cores (difficult since I needed both my two rain gauges to get all the snow). With all the blowing and drifting and terrain variation, the results varied slightly depending on location. My statistics yielded 3.19 inches +/- .15 inches snow-water-equivalent. Clearly, total melting would create flooding with our solidly frozen ground!

2/20/2014 6:00 AM 0.50 0.3 M 11.0 M I don't know the exact snowfall - there is still 0.3 inches on elevated surfaces that drained and 0.3 inches of slush on the snow board, which has drained less well. With the mix, it is impossible to separate snowfall from sleet from rain. The net effect on total snow and ice was neutrality - new precipitation matched the compaction of the snow and ice. Perhaps another SWE after the storm is over will yield what the runoff was.
2/21/2014 6:00 AM 0.41 0.2 M 10.0 M Most of the precipitation fell as rain and froze. The winds are strong and the snow accumulation is uneven (from clean to drifted into hollows). The snow observation was on a table somewhat sheltered from direct wind.
