Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/20/2013 5:35 PM 0.12 T M 0.0 0.00 First snowfall of the season began at 5:30 PM. It is coming down hard and I may get a measurable amount out of this squall.
10/21/2013 8:00 AM 0.20 0.7 0.15 0.5 M The depth of the snow on the ground takes into account a snow measurement of 0.7 inches, and snow coverage on the ground of 1/3 bare, 2/3 snow cover. The snow on the snow board was very wet and icy. Last night, the falling snow was mixed with large raindrops. The difference between the measurement in the gauge and the measurement on the board can be accounted for, probably, by assuming that some of the rain runs off the board onto the ground.
10/22/2013 3:00 PM 0.21 1.3 0.18 0.5 M New snowfall measurements were taken from the snowboard. There is 90% snow cover on the ground, and it is extremely variable in depth. On the ground, the snow measures from a trace to 0.6 inches in depth. On October 21, at 2 PM, there was a brief snow pellet shower. The snow pellets were variable in size, ranging in size from 1/8th to 3/8ths inch in size. the larger snow pellets were irregularly shaped. At present, the snowmelt is sheeting out of the trees.
10/27/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00
10/28/2013 8:00 AM 0.03 0.2 0.03 0.2 0.03 Very fine pelletized snow fell during the overnight hours. There is 75% snow cover on the ground, which adheres mainly on leaves and built up structures such as the woodpile and deck.
11/1/2013 8:00 AM 0.21 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 the rain fell on Halloween as very light rain and mist. It was very foggy all day.
11/2/2013 8:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 the precipitation fell as light rain in brief showers on the afternoon and evening of Nov. 1
11/3/2013 8:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 The precipitation fell as snow and rain showers on the evening of Nov. 2
11/6/2013 2:00 PM 0.58 2.6 0.42 3.5 0.45 The winter storm began with rain, and very quickly changed to rain mixed with snow, then shortly to all snow that came down heavily. The snow accumulation is very wet and heavy. The large difference in value between the snow depth on the snow board and that on the ground is puzzling, since the ground was bare of snow before the storm. One possible explanation is that the ground is covered with long dry grass and autumn leaves, and it is difficult to get a measurement that does not include compressing the grass and leaves to the ground. One can postulate that the difference between the melted snow amount in the gauge and the melted snow amount from the cores is an approximate measurement of rain that fell.

11/14/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.5 M Snow covers 30% of area. Depth reflects depth if total area was covered. we had stiff breezes, warmer temperatures and sunshine on the afternoon of Nov 13.
11/15/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 We are in the midst of a brief warm period. There was dense fog over the lake this morning. There are still remnants of snow on the lot where the gauge is located, but not enough to calculate a depth over the entire area. there is more snow cover in the forest across the road.
11/16/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 There are scraps of snow on the area around cocorahs, but not enough to generate a depth for the entire area. there is snow in the forest across the road
11/17/2013 8:00 AM 0.65 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 The weather is lovely outside. seems like early October...as happens sometimes now, during the rain last night the temperatures rose. when the rain began at 2PM, the temperature was 39 degrees. at 10 PM, during a moderate steady rain, the temperature was 44 degrees.

We spent all evening roof raking and then blowing/shoveling the rain laden slushy snow that cascaded off the roof onto our driveway and deck. this morning, with a driving wind and single digit temps, the remaining slushy snow that came off the roof during the night was frozen into a solid mass. thankfully this was only on the lake side, onto the deck. we had a driving wind all day. There is 2/10 inch of frozen rain on the top of the snow and one inch of crusted snow. Winter is starting off with a bang.

1/4/2014 5:00 PM 0.04 1.5 0.13 12.0 1.63 I took a snow water equivalency measurement today (of the depth of snow on the ground) in case it is so cold on Monday that I do not want to go outside. The SWE equivalence from the gauge and from the new snow measurement have no correspondence whatever. We had strong blustery winds last night while it was snowing. That may have led to too small a catch in the gauge, or too large a catch, due to drifting, on the snow board. Snowdrifts on the ground are beginning to make it difficult to get an accurate snow depth.

At 6:45, snow began to fall, mixed with the misty rain, then it proceeded to snow harder and the rain ceased by 7:00 PM. The gauge had a very light dappling of frozen rain this morning on the windy side. there was not enough frozen rain to make a uniform coating-- each individual mist droplet had frozen separately. Due to blowing and drifting snow, uniform snow depth measurements are not occurring this year. the snow depth listed is the most commonly occurring value among several readings.

There has been a great deal of blowing and drifting and the snow during the cold periods was fine and very dry. I am having trouble walking in the woods on this snow with snowshoes. I have a pair of bearpaw, and I sink in 10 inches, on crusted snow. Usually on crusted snow, the snow collapses some and you can maneuver. I will have to get the big michigans out if I want to go through the woods.

4/17/2014 9:00 AM 1.17 13.8 1.50 18.5 2.53 NWS indicates at this time we may get more snow, but this looks like it for this event (I am writing this at 10:30AM CDT 4-17-14). The storm lasted almost 24 hours and perhaps it let up at midnight last night, but I never saw it let up. The snow is wet and heavy. The wind is slight or still--glad a wind is not thrashing those snow laden conifer branches around, perhaps causing power outages. In this instance, I believe the melted value from the core to be the more accurate measure of actual snow water equivalence for the precip that fell during this event. the gauge was overtopped during the night. The total snow depth and melted core value are calculated values, since part of my site was bare of snow and part of my site had residual snow before the snow events of this week. I took representative measurements of both areas and the results are as follows: bare before snow events: current depth is 12.5 inches with a SWE of 1.57 inches. residual snow before snow events: current depth is 27.5 inches and the current SWE is 3.80 inches. In this snow column, 23 inches are snow and the 4.5 inches nearest the ground are coarse, loosely packed clear granular ice. The SWE of the snow portion of the sample column is 1.90 inches and the SWE of the ice portion of the sample column is 1.90 inches.

12/17/2013 12/21/2013 8:00 AM 5 0.18 9.5 M Snow accumulation on snow board for this time period: 3.8 inches Snow water equivalent of snow on board for this time period: 0.20
12/23/2013 12/24/2013 5:00 PM 2 0.04 10.5 1.39 The depth of the snow on the snowboard was 0.5 inches. the snow water equivalent of the snow on the snowboard was 0.05 inches. The rain that we had a couple of weeks ago will make measuring snow depth and snow water equivalence difficult this entire winter. there is from 1/2 to 1 inch of very tough concentrated ice down in the snow column. when the ruler hits it, it stops. the snow depth must be made with a quick jabbing motion. this can make the ruler wobble around. Oh well, if it was easy, anybody could do it, right?
12/29/2013 12/30/2013 8:00 AM 2 0.03 11.0 1.73 New snow on board: 0.5 inches SWE of snow on board: 0.03 inches -22 degrees at 7:30 this morning. we have everything that will hold birdseed on the feeder array, and the finches are feeding like crazy. When I checked the gauge this morning, there was a very very thin coating of frozen drizzle on the inside and on the windy side. This drizzle fell about 9 PM Saturday night. The air was filled with a precipitation that was so fine it was like dust. I could not tell whether it was drizzle or snow. Obviously, it was drizzle
1/21/2014 1/22/2014 9:00 AM 2 0.02 19.0 M New snow depth: 0.9 inches New snow core: 0.07 inches The snow gauge didn't properly capture the snow that fell.
1/23/2014 1/25/2014 5:00 PM 3 0.11 20.0 M We have experienced strong gusty winds which have blown the snow out of the trees and piled it into drifts. the snowboard has been blown clear of the new snow and snow depths are very inaccurate in places.
1/30/2014 1/31/2014 9:00 AM 2 0.27 21.0 M total inches of new snow on snow board: 2.8 snow water equivalent of snow on board: 0.28
2/15/2014 2/20/2014 9:00 AM 6 0.31 M M Depth of new snowfall 3.6 inches
2/22/2014 2/28/2014 9:00 AM 7 0.11 23.0 3.78 The last time I took a reading of 23 inches of snow on the ground, the SWE contained a half an inch less of water equivalent than this 23 inch measurement. I think the snow measurement in the open is dense and shallower than it should be due to high winds that packed the snow and drove some it northward into the woods. I took a SWE measurement in the lea of a scrap wood pile near the gauge where the snow depth was 31.0 inches. The SWE for this depth was 4.52.
