Twice the water equivalent was measured from the snow depth compared to what was measured in the gage. I attribute this to wind accompanying the snow so that the gage did not catch a representative amount of snow. Unless new snowfall takes place that raises the snow depth, the next water equivalent of snow measurement will be done on Monday morning, Nov. 25.

There most likely had been settling of the total snow since yesterday. Hence the reading of 9 inches. Were settling not to have occurred, the reading probably would have been at least 10 inches for the total snow depth this morning. No snow was in progress at time of observation.

Since I took a water equivalent of both the new snow and the total snow depth yesterday morning, and no new significant snow fell during the last 24 hours, I did not take a core sample today. The next scheduled core sample will take place Monday morning, December 9, provided no new significant snow occurs between now and then.

All things considered, the best place to measure the new snow was on my driveway instead of the measuring table. I believe that the water equivalent of the new snow is a more accurate measurement than what was recorded in the gage.

5/18/2014 5:15 PM We had arrived home from Great Falls and reached Billings after the storm occurred. We were not here when it happened and so the times of start and ending are what I got from our neighbors. Hail was piled up to a depth of 4 to 6 inches on west facing structures. Most of the hail was about 1/2 inch diameter, but a few were ping pong size. One of our outside garage lights sustained broken glass on the west facing side and a shattered light bulb. A few new dents were seen in our garage door and some dents occurred on the siding to the right of the garage door.
