It was a dark and stormy night. Thunder started rumbling around 9:15 pm on the 27th, lightning flashes visible. Rain began in earnest just after midnight, becoming heavy for 10-15 minute durations at 12:15 am, 12:35 am, and 2:45 am. I'm sure of the times because our cats are afraid of the noise, and seem to think jumping on us will help. By sunrise, the storms had passed. 71 degrees, mild, puddly and calm. |

Thunder rumbles beginning around 9:15a on 7/3. Showery from 9:30a on, becoming steady & occasionally heavy by 11:30; .45" emptied from gauge at that point. Wind speed increased to 15-20 mph from the east during the afternoon, punctuated by rain squalls; 1.73" dumped from gauge at 2p. Showers, some heavy, continue into early evening as wind picked up strength. By 6:30p, an additional .62" in gauge with sustained winds in the 18-25 mph range, & gusts to around 30 mph. By 10 p, rain became light & intermittent; .32" emptied from gauge. Winds had decreased as well, to 15 to 20 mph. The rain total from Arthur at our house was 3.55", including the .01" in the gauge this morning, when the temperature stood at 84 degrees, with thin SCT clouds, and lt airs. No standing water of any significance, nor any damage besides some strewn twigs. The ice storm this winter took care of most of the blow-down stuff that accumulated over the past largely storm-free decade. |

More rain. About 2:30 yesterday afternoon, the skies opened. The volume slacked off by 2:40, and by 3p it was just mizzling. Thunder boomed at 3:05p & again at 3:30. Expecting more precip, I ran out to empty the gauge, measuring .10". At 3:40--just in time to soak the Saturday-Saturday people unloading at their beach rentals--another shower passed over, not as dramatic as the first. There was .04" in the gauge at 5:30p, and another .03" at 10:45p. This morning we had an additional .01", which I presume fell in the wee hours because our newspaper was in a plastic bag. Good-sized t-storm last evening. It started here after 7p because it was sunny when we left at 6:30 for Wilmington (where high winds caused a few minutes of straight-line rain between 8 & 8:30p). Quite wet yesterday. Rain started at 12:40p; t-storm began about 12:55, and it just teemed & rumbled & flashed until about 2:10p. Our cat Phil may never come out from under the bed. Showery after the main storm until 4-ish. Emptied 2.37" from gauge at 5p. One nice thing about living on sand that reaches down to China is that, even after all that downpour--today & since the 1st of August--we had no standing water here at NC-BR-56.
