11/24/2013 7:30 AM M 3.0 M 3.0 M First significant LE event of the winter. Arctic front brought a stark reminder of what's lies ahead. Frontal passage picked up lake moisture from L. Erie which resulted in a 2-3 hr period of heavy snow with visibility approaching zero at times. Roads quickly became snow covered with many reports of cars off I-86 between Randolph and Jamestown. This morning dawned sunny and very cold with a blanket of white greeting church goers. The snow cover is welcome by deer hunters. I was fortunate enough to tag 2 does last Wednesday so I can sit back and enjoy the snow and cold from the dining room!
11/27/2013 7:30 AM M 8.0 M 10.0 M First synoptic winter storm of the season. Winter Storm Warnings were hoisted across all of western New York beginning at 4 pm yesterday. Freezing rain-snow line just 30 miles to our east and southeast. Remained exclusively snow here while Wellsville and Bradford, PA reported a mix of snow and freezing rain early last night as the low pressure system worked northeast from the southeastern states. Roads were treacherous from late afternoon through the early morning hours. Passed several cars in the ditch on I-86 about 9 pm. This snow is very water-laden as temps hovered around 32F. Scattered power outages reported this am. Mother Nature has certainly painted a Currier and Ives scene outside this morning with everything covered with a thick blanket of snow.

11/29/2013 7:30 AM M 1.0 M 9.0 M LE
12/6/2013 7:30 AM M 0.5 M 0.5 M Temps warmed into the upper 50's/lower 60's across WNY yesterday ahead of a cold front which ushered in colder weather. Rain showers changed to sleet and then snow last evening. Another low pressure system will bring in additional snow to the W. Southern Tier today and tonight (WWA issued) and cause arctic air that sits in the Northern Plains to spill into the northeast.
12/7/2013 7:30 AM M 1.0 M 1.5 M Synoptic system.
12/11/2013 7:30 AM M 3.0 M 3.0 M Lake Effect Snow Warning for S. Erie, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua through 4 am tomorrow. Main band currently situated just north of us about 25 miles. Will stay fairly stationary throughout the day before settling south into the western southern tier later today and tonight. Expecting the majority of our snow at that time which may accumulate an additional 4-8".
12/12/2013 7:30 AM M 3.0 M 5.0 M LE.
12/13/2013 7:30 AM M 2.0 M 4.0 M LE.

12/17/2013 7:30 AM M 1.0 M 12.0 M Alberta Clipper - nuisance synoptic snow. Interesting to note that prior to the clipper, skies were clear and temperatures plunged to -3F at 12:30 am this morning prior to the warm air advection ahead of the system.
12/18/2013 7:30 AM M 1.5 M 10.0 M Weak LE overnight.
12/24/2013 7:30 AM M 1.5 M 1.5 M Minor synoptic with minimal LE to follow today and tonight. At least we'll have a white Christmas!
12/25/2013 7:00 AM M 3.5 M 5.0 M Beautiful Christmas morning albeit cold. 2F but skies partly cloudy and no wind. Fresh snow from yesterday's lake effect brought 4 fresh inches in past 24 hours. Merry Christmas to all.
12/27/2013 7:30 AM M 1.5 M 4.0 M
1/1/2014 7:30 AM M 4.5 M 4.5 M Lake effect bands meandering the past 24 hours. A WWA has been issued for a prolonged synoptic event which will last through Friday. 6-8" expected. As system departs the coldest weather of the season will set in with strong winds, temps below 0F at night and bitterly cold wind chills. 2014 coming in like a lion.
1/2/2014 7:30 AM M 3.0 M 5.5 M WWA upgraded to WSWarning across all of WNY through early tomorrow morning.
1/3/2014 7:30 AM M 5.5 M 8.0 M Fresh snow and arctic high pressure will make all the visiting snowy owls from Canada feel right at home here. Local deer are now making more frequent visits to shrubs and bushes near homes as food becomes more difficult to find. Since the prolonged synoptic snow began on New Year's Day we've received a total of 8.5".
1/10/2014 7:30 AM M 2.5 M 4.0 M Upper level disturbance brought a 6-8hour period of synoptic snow.
1/12/2014 7:00 AM M T M T M
1/18/2014 7:30 AM M 2.0 M 2.0 M Upper air disturbance spread light snow into area overnight. Surge of arctic air poised to move in beginning Sunday night into next week.
1/21/2014 7:30 AM M 2.0 M 2.0 M Synoptic snow associated with arctic front crossing area.
1/26/2014 7:30 AM M 4.0 M 6.0 M WWAdvisory-->WSWarning-->WWA for entire area yesterday. Light snow ahead of Alberta Clipper accumulated a few inches before an arctic front brought a 15-25 minute period of very heavy snow late yesterday afternoon. Apparent LE snow on a strong NW flow brought continued snow to western Cattaraugus County overnight. That was unexpected as Erie is 90-95% ice covered.
1/27/2014 7:30 AM M 1.5 M 7.0 M WWA for entire area this am. Arctic front brought a 1-2 hour period of heavy snow with low visibility and wind during the morning commute.
1/28/2014 7:30 AM M 1.0 M 7.0 M
2/2/2014 7:30 AM M 2.5 M 8.0 M WWA thru 10 am. Rain turned to snow overnight as cold front sliced through the area. The snow is very heavy and water-laden. Looks like a perfect Christmas card outside with the snow clinging to everything.
2/5/2014 7:30 AM M 3.0 M 8.0 M WSWarning the entire area.
2/6/2014 7:30 AM M 5.5 M 12.0 M Synoptic winter storm affected entire region yesterday. 3" with initial slug of moisture followed by 4" in deformation zone on back side of disintegrating low pressure system. Snowfall rates approached 2-3"/hour during the late morning hours. 1.5" on backside of system. Storm total: 8.5"
2/10/2014 7:30 AM M 3.0 M 10.0 M Weak synoptic system.

2/25/2014 7:30 AM M 3.0 M 6.0 M Lake Effect Snow Advisory issued mid-evening for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties until 7 am this morning. Lake Erie is 90% ice-covered so we can thank Lake Michigan for delivering last evening's LE on a W-NW flow.
2/26/2014 7:30 AM M 1.5 M 6.0 M Synoptic snow showers throughout the night.

Synoptic system brought heavy rain in mid afternoon that changed to sleet, freezing rain and then heavy snow. Gusty winds combined with the heavy snow brought visibilities down to < 100' at times. The drive from Kleinhans home last night at 10 pm was treacherous. Took 1.75 hrs going up in heavy rain and 2.5 hrs coming home. Many area roads not plowed at that time during the height of the storm. Snowfall rates of >1" hour in the heaviest northward-migrating bands. All this white will be a distant memory by Tuesday with temps forecast in the low 60s.
